Watch the Stars With Me
Eloise had always been fascinated by space. It always piqued her attention whenever somebody mentioned it in conversation. She spent hours of her time before coming to Hogwarts charting stars and studying constellations. She wasn't sure what astronomy would be like at Hogwarts, but she hoped it to be no different than what she studied in Bath, back at her home.
The astronomy tower was extremely tall, taller than Eloise had expected. It was dark as Eloise approached the door. She tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. Locked. With a sigh, Eloise stood outside the door. She longed to be up in the tower. However, it must have to wait until she was able to take classes there.
Settling for just being outside the door, Eloise slumps down, sliding down the wall until she came to rest on the ground. It was slightly cold, but it wasn't too miserable. Although, upon finding that she had no access to the tower, Eloise probably wouldn't stay long.
Instead of looking at the stars, she pulls the book she'd brought with her open in her lap, once again poring over the maps of the sky. It was a book she'd brought from home, full of constellations and stars. It was one of her favorite books, and she'd figured that she could use it to look for constellations outside. However, that obviously couldn't happened anymore. Turning the familiar pages, she gave her undivided attention to the book in her lap.

Watch the Stars With Me
The spiraling stairs of the astronomy tower seemed never-ending to Merle as she made her way towards the top. She briefly glanced back behind her, the idea of tumbling back down all those stairs made her head spin. She centered herself, adjusting her sketchbook under her arm. The charcoal she clutched in her hand smudged, staining her palm a smoky gray.
Since first hearing of the astronomy tower, Merle knew it would be the perfect place for a view of the castle grounds. She could imagine it now. How the cold night air would feel compared to the stuffier, dustier air of a centuries-old castle. The Forbidden Forest would be a dark mass far below, holding so many secrets. If she peered over the edge, she'd be able to see the inky depths of the lake.
Merle suddenly remembered that the tower was off limits outside of lessons. She shrugged, when had rules stopped her before? If anything came of it, she'd figure something out. The wooden door came into view and Merle realized she wasn't the only one who'd thought to make the trip to the top of the tower.
The other girl sat before the door, deeply immersed in her book. Was the tower locked? Merle supposed that would make sense. But it had taken a while for Merle to get this far, there wasn't any sense in turning back now.
"Um, hello? I'm Merle. Is the tower locked?"

Watch the Stars With Me
Eloise turned around. She'd thought that she'd heard somebody coming up, but she wasn't sure if it had just been her mind playing tricks on her. "Sadly, yes" she says with a sigh. "I was really hoping it would be open, too." Eloise lifted her book slightly, in a friendly gesture telling the girl that she'd wanted to look at the stars. Although, she wasn't sure if her new companion had seen the contents of the book, and if she had, if she'd understood what Eloise meant.
"I'm Eloise." She smiles in the general direction of the girl. From the thin sliver of moonlight coming in through the window, Eloise could make out that the girl who'd approached her had brown hair, several shades lighter than her own. Thought, she couldn't make out many of the facial features of the girl, considering that those were too intricate to go off of by just a sliver of light. Although, since she was closer to the window, the girl could probably see very well what she looked like. Suddenly, Eloise became fairly self conscious.
"So, uh, what brings you up here? Same thing?" She hadn't meant to chart stars or anything fancy, but rather to just gaze up at the night sky. Though, how was the girl supposed to know what she'd meant. They'd only just meant, and Eloise was horrible at times with stating exactly what she meant. Although, she figured she should elaborate. "To look at the stars, I mean."

Merle moved up a step, leaning against the tower's stone wall. She shrugged, "Mostly I was hoping for a view of the grounds. I'd love to see the forest up close, but my parents would be rather cross if I got in too much trouble my first year." Since hearing of the forest, Merle found herself fascinated with what she might find in it. Of course, she knew of the punishments for venturing too far and didn't want to test her luck. Not yet, at least.
She glanced at the other girl's book, the pages faintly legible in the dim moonlight. Star charts? Merle suddenly realized how clear the night sky must be, given how far away from any muggle city Hogwarts was. Besides, even if they were close, there was probably some sort of magical whatsit to clear away any light pollution. Merle wondered if she'd ever seen the stars at their brightest. Even back home in Finchingfield, which could be considered somewhat rural, light from London drowned out most of the stars.
"It's a shame we can't go up there. Don' suppose Professor Barclay would be too happy about it." Merle shifted in place, finding that she wasn't sure what to say next. She pushed a lock of hair behind her ear with a charcoal-smudged hand, her sketchbook wrinkling slightly with the movement.

Shaking her head, Eloise agreed. "I suppose not. It's probably locked for a reason. Although, maybe I can make it up here sometime when astronomy class isn't going on. I'd like to go up in the tower on my own terms at some point while I'm here." Closing her book, Eloise shifted her full attention to the girl who'd greeted her. It would be rude not to, and besides, it wasn't like she was reading it anymore anyways.
Eloise couldn't help but wonder what had brought the girl up here. She didn't want to ask for fear of prying, but maybe she wouldn't mind. Hopefully that was the case. But as she tried to form the sentence she wished to ask, Eloise found the words wouldn't come. Her tongue was bound, her voice long gone. 'So much for making casual conversation' she thinks sarcastically.
It wasn't only the question, still forming in her mouth, that wouldn't come out. It was any other words in general. It was almost as if somebody had cast a spell on her, prohibiting her from speaking. Although she knew that wasn't the case. She was just simply terrible at making conversation with anyone she wasn't familiar with. Eloise hoped that the girl would say something, so she could simply reply and not have to come up with something to say herself.
