A Quiet Life Closed

Charlie wandered into the library, it was shocking that he had been at Hogwarts for more than a week and had never properly taken in the library. Charlie had loved books for all his life and usually spent his time at school in the school library, he enjoyed having a calm and quiet place to work or relax. Charlie looked around him in awe at the towering shelves lined with books that seemed to go on forever. He could not help feeling excited, this, he thought, this is a proper library. Charlie wandered through the shelves, running his fingers over the spines of the books. He thought about all of the time that would be spent here throughout his years at Hogwarts, enjoying this daydream until he walked straight into a wall. I guess it does end, Charlie thought to himself as he regained awareness.

It was at this time that he saw a book that caught his eye, a poetry book. He had never read magical poetry before, Charlie decided to take the book to an open table nearby and began to read. Charlie could hardly focus on the book because he was much too distracted by the wonderful library. He was surrounded by everything he loved and thought about how lucky he was to be in a library like this one. If he was going to make friends at Hogwarts, this is where he would find them.

Pippa's brain felt like mush after a full week of classes at Hogwarts. Having grown up much like any other muggle, despite having a wizard for a dad, Hogwarts was total overstimulation for her. She needed to decompress and felt there was no better place to do that then the library. She had only stepped in once briefly while exploring the castle but had made a mental note to spend the day there sometime.

Well, that time had come. Donned in a soft pink and purple striped long sleeve t-shirt and jeans, she waltzed excitedly through the shelves filled to the ceiling with books. There were a number of students studying at tables in the center of the library and others picking books off the shelves. She wondered to herself how many students were there to study and who was there to read for leisure.

As she studied the books on one end of an aisle, Pippa noticed a boy at the other end just before he ran himself into the wall. Pippa stifled a laugh deep in her stomach and tried to wipe the smile off her face. He seemed to brush off the incident quickly and picked a book from the shelf to study it. At the same time, Pippa began walking towards him. When she was close enough for whisper-talk, she joked, "Don't you go thinking no one saw that." She raised her eyebrows and gave him a thin smile.

Pippa turned to look at the section of books the boy was browsing. "Ahh poetry... Can't say I know much myself. Got a favorite author? Er, poet, I suppose?" She pulled on the spines of a few to check the covers as she did for any book.

While Charlie was reading, he had shed is robes but was still dressed in a Gryffindor sweater along with a collared shirt, tie, and pants, another first year started a conversation with him. This was extremely unusual for Charlie, he had never really thought he could make friends his age with similar interests. It was incredible to him that he was just asked about reading.
Charlie was startled to say the least, he rarely talked to kids his own age, let alone new people. But literature was something he could talk about with ease, and so he responded to the girl, “My favorite author is Oscar Wilde, it’s ironic given my name. That’s actually how I discovered him in the first place.” Charlie went on about how much he loved literature, making sure to monitor the girls body language as to ensure that she was not growing bored of him. Then, realizing that he had gone on about poetry and reading for too long, and that he had no idea who this girl was, Charlie apologized, “Sorry, I get carried away when it comes to books and authors.” Fiddling with the cover of his book he asked, “So, do you have any favorite poets of your own?” Before the girl could answer Charlie added awkwardly, “And I never caught your name, I’m Charlie.. Wilde, but you could have guessed that, what’s yours?” This was one instance where it was made painfully obvious that Charlie had very little experience talking with his peers.

Pippa listened on while the boy talked about literature, he seemed to know a great deal about it and his passion for it delighted her. She donned a curious smile and kept eye contact. The glowing confidence from discussing literature faded and Pippa could tell he thought he was talking too much as he began to ask her questions. "No, really, I thought it was quite interesting. Don't even worry about it," she said with a big smile, "It's wonderful to meet you Charlie! I'm Pippa Adams and I can't say I have a favorite anything to be honest, I just read whatever falls into my hands. Suggestions from others and whatnot."

"Have you been spending a lot of time in here then?" Her eyes lifted to the top of the towering shelves. "Can't say I have just yet. But it's a great environment for studying! Which is something I really need to get on..." Pippa trailed off. She hadn't done hardly any studying at all, which made her feel guilty every time she saw someone in the Slytherin common room with their nose in a school book. It didn't help looking around the library where students from all houses and all years were busy reviewing the week's lessons.

Charlie was relived that the girl was not scared off by his terrible social skills. This could be a friend, he thought, almost unable to believe it. Though it was only one short conversation, it was more than Charlie had ever been capable of at muggle school with his peers. He then added on to his previous thought, maybe it’s just the magic in the magic school working. Realizing he still had not yet responded to Pippa, he quickly stated, “Well, I should let you get to studying.” The girl was about to say something as she turned to leave as Charlie quickly added, “But I hope to see you around campus, maybe we can meet in the library again sometime? Only if you want to, of course; but I am happy to talk about literature more or we could study together.”
Charlie tried his best to sound casual, but he desperately wanted Pippa to say yes. At home, he could deal with not having any friends because he would always talk with Grant, the owner of the local coffee shop, when he got coffee and, of course, he had his mum. Without the little interactions he took for granted everyday back at home, Charlie was in desperate need of a friend, he only hoped Pippa could be this for him.
