Kaitlyn was sitting in the Transfiguration classroom with her wand in her slender hand. She was watching the poor snail slowly move around on her desk. She pointed her wand at it. “Choclea Bibe,” she enunciated. But, nothing happened. The snail still just moved around on her desk and didn’t turn into a teapot. This was meant to be a first-year spell, and here she was already struggling. While snails could be considered pretty gross, she didn’t want to harm the animal by transfiguring it.

With a sigh, Kaitlyn took a glance around the classroom. She saw a bunch of teapots around her on desks or some of her classmates actively transforming the snail. And yet, here she was, unable to do it. She honestly felt terrible and discouraged. She was in upper-level classes at her muggle school, St. Ann’s all-girls Catholic Boarding school. Here at Hogwarts, she felt like a dunce. The few spells they had learned so far, she had so much trouble in casting and often had to try a lot harder than anyone else.

Noticing the snail about to slide off her desk, Kaitlyn picked up the snail and placed it back on her desk near her arm. She giggled sadly when it started to crawl on her. Her impeccable appearance was marred by the sad look she was giving as she watched her snail. She felt paralyzed in mediocrity.

Violet sat with her wand in her hand, a snail kept infront of her. She listened quite carefully, not noticing anyone beside or behind her, when the professor was explaining how turn the snail into the teapot, not wanting to miss anything or any tip that could help her with transfiguration.

She realised that visualisation was actually quite important for transfiguring.
She thought, silently encouraging herself, "I have read a lot of books and I always manage to visualise the scenes described in the book, so this should be a piece of cake for me.

In reality, Violet was not really sure, if she would be able to do it. Transfiguring was cool and all but manipulating atoms looked difficult to her.
Her wand arm was slightly shaking.
She decided to close her eyes and took 3 deep breaths.
"So what if I can't do it in the first try or maybe even a few, the professor is there to help out, I'll anyways learn it by the end of year.", She thought to herself.

Violet pointed her wand towards the snail. She repeated in her head, what part of snail should make what part of the teapot.
Waving her wand three times, she enunciated, "Choclea Bibe" and concentrated hard on the snail's shell, imagining it as the body of the teapot, moving her gaze quickly to the snail's body, imagining it as a teapot's handle and then to the snail's eyes or horns, whatever they were, imagining it as the snout of a teapot.

And the snail transfigured to a teapot. It didn't turn out to be so pretty, still being the same colour as the snail. She thought to herself, "Seriously couldn't I think of a prettier teapot, this is so basic."

Anyways, done with her transfiguration, she decided finally to have a look around.

Next to her was a girl, quite impeccably dressed, having trouble transfiguring the snail into a teapot.
Well, her snail was still a snail which was getting rather impatient.
Seeing her robes, Violet could guess that she belonged to Slytherin.
Violet decided to approach the girl, wanting to help her with her transfiguration.
She could pretty much realise, the girl beside her wasn't feeling confident and wasn't visualising properly.

Violet turned to her, speaking to which she visibly flinched, being brought out of her trance, "Hey, I'm Violet! Do you need help with your transfiguration?"
Realising the girl flinched when Violet said that, she quickly continued afraid of looking arrogant, "I'm really sorry that I spoke so suddenly but I saw you looking quite sad, whatever the reason is, maybe I can help?"

‘Ugh, why can’t I get this right! I’m scared to Transfigure animals … and I just suck at magic,’ Kaitlyn frowned. Her blue eyes watched the snail crawling on her hand. Surprisingly, she wasn’t disgusted touching the snail. It was rather cute, in her opinion. She knew the snail likely didn’t care what was happening. But, she didn’t want to harm it. The snail was still a living creature.

Nervously, Kaitlyn began to play with her right pigtail and fidgeted in her chair. She was getting anxious. ‘What if I can’t do this? What happens if I can never transfigure anything? Will I even be able to transfigure inanimate objects? I’m just so scared,’ she thought, still looking sad at the snail. She was going to have to suck it up at some point, but she didn’t know if she had it in her.

Kaitlyn felt terrible with herself. Glumly, she pulled the snail off her hand and placed it back on the table. She briefly closed her eyes. Took a deep breath in. Held it for a few moments. Then slowly let it out. When she reopened her eyes, she noticed a girl talking to her. She flinched at the girl’s sudden appearance. She wasn’t used to other students randomly approaching her. “Um … H-Hi. I’m Kaitlyn. I-it’s n-nice t-to m-meet y-you, Violet,” she stammered, her face flushed red.

Her face flushed even darker, when Violet mentioned that she could see that Kaitlyn needed help. 'Am I really that obvious?’ She thought. “Um, I-if you d-don’t m-mind. I c-can’t g-get th-the s-spell t-to w-work,” she admitted, still stuttering. Despite feeling embarrassed on how easily she was read, she was thankful this girl approached her. Personally, she wasn't good with starting conversations. Truth be told, she wasn't good with any conversation. But, starting a conversation was even harder for her, especially when she didn't already know the person.

Violet for some reason was feeling way more confident than she normally is. Guess, she even struck a conversation with someone even though she was extremely shy.
Hogwarts really had the magic.

The girl beside her had introduced herself as Kaitlyn Connor. Violet noticed that the girl was getting redder as the minutes passed by. She could guess that Kaitlyn was embarrassed. If Violet was in her place, she would be too. Kaitlyn was probably braver than her, at least she opened up about her problem.

Nevertheless, Violet decided that she should get the girl beside her comfortable around her first.

"Kaitlyn, that's such a nice name! And I really love your hairstyle", Violet complimented and then continued adding a softer tone to her voice "Oh and don't you worry, everybody goes through spell issues at some point of time." Violet giggled at her own comment emphasizing 'spell issues'. Violet clearly found her own usage of words quite funny.

She told Kaitlyn that together they'll figure it out. Violet didn't know if it comforted the girl beside her, but it definitely did comfort her own self.

Violet tried encouraging her saying "You know what Kaitlyn, So what if you can't do it in the first try or maybe even a few, the professor is there to help out, you'll anyways learn it by the end of year." She found herself repeating exactly same words she had told herself to Kaitlyn.

Not giving a chance to speak, Violet continued, "Alright miss, I want you to close your eyes and take in three longg deep breaths.", faking professionalism, funnily emphasizing 'long deep breaths'. Violet wasn't really sure how conversations work, but she was ready to try it out, making a few jokes here and there, to make the girl beside her feel at ease.

Kaitlyn flushed a little at the compliment about her name. She always liked it herself. And then her hairstyle, too. “T-thanks. V-Violet s-sounds g-good, too,” she responded, complimenting Violet back, despite her stutter. Her right hand continued to play with her right pigtail. “I-it sometimes f-feels l-like j-just m-me,” she responded, frowning slightly. It also didn’t help that she had such low confidence in herself. Then again, she was also a muggle-born.

At Violet’s words of encouragement, Kaitlyn nodded in understanding. It all made sense but didn’t make her feel any better. “I g-get i-it. B-but, I c-can’t h-help b-but f-feel w-worthless … l-like I d-don’t b-belong h-here,” she muttered through her stuttering. As much as she was willing to accept help, she was still embarrassed that she couldn’t do it by herself. She could almost feel their classmates staring at her. It was not a good feeling at all. And they were all probably making fun of the weird Slytherin girl.

“O-okay,” Katie timidly complied. She closed her eyes, taking a deep long breath. She amended Violet’s suggestion slightly and held her breath for a minute. Then, she slowly let it out. Then, she repeated with a deep breath in. Hold it for a minute. Slowly let it out. Then a third deep breath in. Hold it for a minute. Then slowly let it out. She turned to Violet, as she opened her eyes. “Um … n-not to s-sound ungrateful. B-but, w-why did you ha-have me d-do t-that?” She asked, quietly. Unless it was to calm her down of course. As much as she tried to not get emotional, it was rather easy to fall into that idea.

When Kaitlyn said she felt worthless, Violet genuinely felt bad. No body in this world was worthless. And she believed whoever, be it a pureblood, half blood or a muggle born, has a letter of Hogwarts belonged here.
This place was to be shared by whoever had magical abilities and thus nobody here should feel out of place.
To make Kaitlyn feel welcomed and worthy, she wanted to make a joke about the fact that she is breathing converting oxygen to carbon dioxide, her mother had taught her that while explaining some muggle science to her but she thought it was better not to make it, it can be deemed insensitive and the last thing Violet would want is to be insensitive towards the girl who was already scared.
So Violet simply said, "You are not worthless Kaitlyn, nobody in the world is, I can assure you that. Transfiguration might not be your strength, but there are other subjects out there, alright. We will get you through transfiguration as well."

For some reason, Violet felt really close to the girl wanting to protect her from her own insecurities.

As she has suggested, Kaitlyn took 3 deep breaths, even holding her breath in between.

To Kaitlyn's question of why she was made to do the breathing, Violet actually was not sure how to reply. Maybe because it helped herself to calm herself down or maybe because it helped to clear her mind to focus on visualisation.
So Violet ended up merging both into her answer, she replied, "See first of all deep breathing makes your heartbeat slower and calmer, so overall you should feel less anxious. Secondly, Transfiguration is a lot about visualisation. Deep breathing is like a short meditation which will help you to clear your mind and visualise properly. Tell me once you feel calmer, I will explain the steps to you. I'm pretty sure the only reason you are not able to transfigure the snail right now is because you are unable to visualise."

Kaitlyn sighed quietly and nodded. “T-thanks, Violet,” she whispered. “I h-hope s-so, I don’t w-want to f-fail,” she added. She felt strangely lighter, airing out her insecurities and fears. She couldn’t grasp why she felt comfortable enough to tell them to Violet, but there was no point in taking them back now. Besides, it felt good to get them off her chest. While she had other anxieties, these were major ones. She wanted to do well at the magical school, she was determined to do so.

At Violet’s explanation, Kaitlyn flushed. But, she waited for the Hufflepuff to finish before saying anything. She rather enjoyed practicing active listening to help make the other person she was talking to know that she was listening. Plus, it matched pretty well with her introverted nature. She could also tell that Violet was genuinely trying to help her. She wanted to be respectful back to her, knowing how it was to try to help others. Plus, Violet seemed nice. It was the least that she could do.

Once she was sure Violet was finished, Kaitlyn cleared her throat. “Um … T-thanks. I actually knew m-most of that a-already. But, w-we have to visualize what we wa-wanted transfigured?” She asked quietly, the stutter in her voice noticably becoming less frequent. “I j-just thought you w-waved your wand like n-normal. I haven’t e-even tried to v-visualize anything y-yet,” she admitted with a frown. She realized how pathetic that sounded, and hoped she didn’t sound too stupid in front of Violet.

Violet noticed how Kaitlyn had started to stutter less. This felt like an achievement for Violet. She herself wasn't amazing at making conversations, but she was able to carry out this conversation nicely even fulfilling her aim of making the girl beside her comfortable.

She furrowed her brows, when Kaitlyn said that she hadn't even tried visualising. She quickly straightened her expressions, realising this might make the Slytherin uncomfortable or feel stupid. Violet had tried so hard to make the girl feel confident, so to make fun of her or even look like a potential 'fun maker' was not in her today's to do list.

"You know what, Kaitlyn Violet started, "You were busy feeling under confident that you didn't pay much heed to what the professor had to say" Realising it did not come off as she wanted,Violet quickly continued without giving Kaitlyn a chance to think or react, "Don't worry this happens to everyone, I had say a beginner's mistake. I remember taking so much time understanding basic muggle science when everyone else my age understood it and as we lived in a largely muggle habitat, I was always looked down upon by the other kids. But at the end of the day, I learnt it and that's what matters. I had to build confidence in that subject brick by brick, so I could actually ace it. Wait, acing it is exxageration, I was just able to complete the basics."

Kaitlyn flushed bright red at Violet’s correct assumptions about her. “I j-just feel so s-stupid,” she moaned, resting her head against the desk. Her mind swirling with thoughts. ‘You’re not good enough for this, Katie. You should’ve stayed at your private boarding school with your friends. You’d be getting straight A’s, and not almost at the verge of tears in class,’ her mind reminded her.

As Violet talked to try to make her feel better, Kaitlyn’s right hand played more with her right pigtail. ‘Goodness. Why do I feel so nervous. I don’t understand what’s coming over me. I’m not normally this expressive over my feelings. I guess Violet’s presence is helping with that?’ She thought. Although, she would rather not be on the verge of tears.

As Violet’s story finished, Kaitlyn laid her arms against the table, completely forgetting about the snail. She rested her head against her arms, still very upset. “In m-my muggle school, I w-was in up-upper-level classes. I d-don’t know h-how much of t-that was me, or h-how much of that w-was my friends,” she continued, willing herself to not start sobbing. Her stutter was getting even better, however.

In an attempt to keep her mind off of her self-doubt, Kaitlyn looked over at Violet. “I d-don’t know why a-anyone would l-look down at you. Y-you’re kind and smart,” she noted.

When Kaitlyn said she felt stupid, Violet realised how much similar she herself was to Kaitlyn.
In her 11 years of life, she had various instances where she felt utterly stupid. She would cry everytime she felt like that.
Maybe that was the reason, she really wanted to help the Slytherin beside her.

Nonetheless she spoke, "Kaitlyn, that's alright, everyone feels stupid time to time. Let me just remind you one subject does not change your future, but self doubting definitely does destroy it. You would need to work upon your habit of self doubting."

Violet watched, as Kaitlyn rested her arms against the table putting her head against them and she listened intently as Kaitlyn started telling about her muggle school.
Violet noticed how she struggled to keep her sobs in. She was not sure if she should address it or not, maybe crying in the class wasn't really the best idea. Thus Violet decided to let Kaitlyn control her tears. She would rather try to make her laugh, even though she sucked at telling jokes.

When Kaitlyn told her that she was kind and smart, Violet blushed, quite heavily. Kaitlyn had started stuttering less, so maybe it was now, her time to stutter.
She was not sure how to recieve the compliment. She started of, "O-oh I-I'm not r-really s-smart, you know." Getting over the moment, she started again, "If I'm smart, so are you. End of the discussion, I wouldn't like to hear you calling yourself stupid again, alright.
