A Flower For A Crush

So, here I was. The Great Lake. It was huge, but surely cold at this time of the year. So that meant no swimming. (I don’t really like swimming, I don’t know why.) Instead, I sat on the banks of the river, by myself. I wasn’t doing anything particular; just sitting and relaxing, perhaps thinking of home. I hadn’t been here this long, not even a week, yet a felt myself yearning for a bit of home. I hadn’t bought anything from home with me, which I was a bit upset about. Actually, that wasn’t true. I bought a few pictures of my parents with me in front of different locations, including our home. I also bought a can of soda, since I wasn’t sure if they even had soda in this strange new world. So far, I hadn’t seen a trace of soda. It was so strange, there was no carbonated beverages of any kind that I had seen here. But I digress. I watched a few other students frolic in the sun, and watched older (and some younger) students hold hands walking along the lake or sitting on the grass together. I felt a bit bad, since I had almost no friends. I watched hopefully as students approached me, then watched sadly as they turned away. I wanted them to talk to me, I wanted to have friends too! I closed my eyes to take a short nap; which was interrupted by the cheers of students playing a game. I realized I couldn’t rest here, so I sat up again and looked around. I saw a few girls talking in groups, but no one glanced in my direction, as if I was invisible. I smirked, thinking that in this magical place, I probably COULD turn invisible. Just had to get old enough. Something caught my eye. A girl, with red hair, not much older than me, was walking towards me. I don’t know why, but I felt my heart beat faster, and suddenly felt scared. I quickly stood up. I wasn’t scared; but rather had a crush. Whatever, happened, I knew I had to get to know this girl.

Lily had spent a long time inside that day. She had left her homework a little late and had a whole pile to complete. By the time she had finished she was so exhausted it was unbelievable. She put her homework away in her bag than walked up to the Gryffindor dormitory and left her homework there. She then grabbed a casual muggle book before walking back downstairs to go outside.
It was a beautiful day, a nice, crisp breeze in the air. A lot of people were out. She glanced to her usual spot and saw that their was a boy sitting there. He was looking hopefully around him and she figured he was pretty lonely. She approached him and her first impression was cute. Lily started to watch him from behind and a swooping sensation went through her stomach. She knew immediately what was going on: she was in love with this boy. He must have sensed he was being watched because he turned and looked straight at her. Lily swallowed and walked towards him. The boy stood up quite quickly. She gave him a soft smile as she got closer. "Um, hi. I'm Lily. Lily McCoire. she said softly holding her hand out to him for him to shake.

When I first looked at this girl, I immediately knew she was cute. I wanted to know her better. I waited as she approached, gave me a pretty smile, and introduced herself as Lily McCoire. I took her hand, my heart hammering in my chest. Oh God, please don’t let me faint! I smiled at her, hoping she wouldn’t actually see how nervous I really was. “I’m Bailey Ledges. It’s a pleasure to meet you!” I was panicking. “Your name is Lily? That’s a beautiful name. It reminds me of home. At my house there were all these lillies and..” I stopped, realizing I was rambling on. I didn’t need to embarrass myself in front of her. I looked into her eyes, and regretted it immediately. I blushed and looked down, hoping I was fast enough. What to say now? I froze, not sure how to continue this awkward conversation. “I j-just got here, and it’s really strange, right? I’m in Slytherin, and everyone there is nice, right now.” I ran out of things to say, so I just glanced up at her, then broke eye contact. I had never been this nervous, but she was prettier than most girls I had seen. As I watched the surface of the lake, I saw a pink flower blow off the surface and float through the wind. I quickly, but gently, grabbed it out and looked down. It was a pink lilly. I had an idea. “Hey, do you want this? I just found it, and I think….” God, this was so awkward. However, I extended my hand, and offered her the flower. I saw a soft patch of grass, and gently sat down, the flower in my hand. “Would you like to sit and talk? We can get to know each other a bit better…..if you would like.”

Lily smiled at the boy as he introduced himself as Bailey and that he was in the house Slytherin amd a first year. "You're in Slytherin? My older brother is in Slytherin. Well he's technically my cousin but my parents passed away during the summer." Her smile faded a little as she remembered. Bailey said something about her having a beautiful name and that he had lillies at home...and that's where he stopped. He seemed really nervous. We made eye contact and i looked into his eyes. They were so pretty. Bailey broke off eye contact and looked away.She noticed the blush on his face but decided to ignore it. Lily watched as he picked up a pink flower and asked if she wanted it. Lily blushed slightly and took the flower out of his hand, her fingers brushing his palm softly. "Thanks. It's beautiful." She said quietly but with a smile as her face turned a light pink. Of course she had to blush now. He'll definitely notice. He asked if she wanted to sit on the grass and get to know each other and she nodded. "I would love to." Lily sat down on the grass next to him sitting a little more closely than she should have as she put the flower behind her ear.

I couldn’t believe it. Lily didn’t just laugh and walk away. She actually wanted to be friends! I smiled at her, my heart doing a tap dance inside my chest. However, when she told me her parents passed on, I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand. “Oh my god, that’s horrible! I-I didn’t…I hope I didn’t upset you! I’m so sorry if I did, I didn’t mean to!” I felt horrible. She obviously didn’t want to think about it, and I, in my desperate attempt to impress her, made her revisit a painful memory. I had to do something. She had told me about her family, it was my turn now. “My mom and dad, they love me, and I love them, but sometimes I feel like I don’t really belong. I know I’m different, obviously, to be here, you must be special. But that’s not what I mean. Kids at school would call me names. Horrible ones, ones I don’t want to talk about.” I thought back to those days where I would be pushed around, laughed at. “But I know my parents love me. My dad’s the wizard.” I tucked myself into a ball, my knees touching my chest. “I was so angry at him for a few days. I couldn’t understand why he could do this to me, and act like it was a great privelage.” I glanced at Lily. “But now that I think about it, it really is. I can meet people I would never meet otherwise.”

Lily smiled softly as he apologized for possibly upsetting her. "Its all right, Bailey. You didn't upset me." He started to talk about his family, how his dad was a wizard and from what Lily could gather his mom was a muggle. As he talked about people calling him names and Lily's face showed horror. "That's what happened before i found out i was a witch. I would make weird things happen without meaning to and the kids...were not nice." She said softly trying to make him feel better. He explained how he had been angry at his dad for thinking it was a great privilege then when he got here he realized it was. Lily nodded. "It is. We may be different than other people but at least we know we're not alone." She smiled out at the lake. "Anyway you should meet by brother sometime. Or brothers i should say. Colin McCoire, he's the one in Slytherin and he's also a 3rd year, and his twin brother Liam, who's in Ravenclaw. I'm in Gryffindor myself." Lily said looking up at the clear blue sky. "It's difficult sometimes to be in different houses bit we make it through anyway."

When Lily told me that she had been bullied, I felt horrible, but also a bit excited, since we had something in common. I hoped we could be friends, but also a little more. I wanted to let her know how I felt, but wasn’t sure how. I looked at her, smiled, and said, “So….you have brothers? What are they like? Are they nice? Or are they the usual annoyances siblings can sometimes be? I’m an only child; so I have no idea what it’s like.” I smiled, thinking once again of home. “And you say you’re in Gryffindor? I know next to nothing about Hogwarts, this whole place is a mystery to me. But I heard that only truly special people are sorted into that’s house. That means you, Lily. ‘Where dwell the brave at heart’. You may not believe it now, but I think you will find you are braver than you know.” I hoped she wouldn’t think I was a weirdo. I wanted to let her know how I felt, and I thought it was the right time. There was no breeze. It was almost entirely silent. I thought back to last year, around this time. I had approached my crush and asked her out. She laughed at me, and walked away. I had to try again, prove I was not broken. “Lily, I-I need to tell you something, and please, just listen. I-I don’t know how to say this, but….” I closed my eyes, and let it all out. “I really like you, Lily. I don’t mean as a friend, I think you’re gorgeous and I have a huge crush on you. I don’t expect you to like me back, I just needed you to know. I’m sorry” There. Done. I sighed, and without looking back, got up to leave.

Lily smiled as she thought about her brother. "Colin is...difficult. He is such a pranker it's unbelievable. And having him and Liam together is a recipe for disaster. " She giggled a little as she thought about it. He said something about truly special people being sorted into Gryffindor. Lily blushed slightly looking down. "Thank you, Bailey. That's so sweet." She said quietly but with a hint of a smirk. It was sweet and Lily was quite touched at what he said. She didn't think it was weird though she started to wonder if he liked her. He kinda had the systems. It mirrored hers to be honest. He told her that he needed to tell her something and to please listen. Lily was quite curious now as she nodded softly. He told her he had a crush, and that she was the most gorgeous girl he'd ever seen. He apologized and moved to leave. Lily jad frozen for a moment but when he went to leave, Lily took a hold of his arm and looked him in the eyes. "I like you too." She whispered before kissing him softly on the lips. He tasted amazing and she never wanted it to end.

I froze. Lily kissed me. I couldn’t believe it. A girl kissed me. My crush kissed me. I grabbed Lily in a tight embrace, hugged her, and kissed her head. “I love you so much.” I let go, sat back down, and pulled Lily with me. “So…….I need to give you a nickname, something that will remind me of you every time I hear it. I need to think…….” Just then, a different idea struck me. “Wait, Colin, is he-is he going to be okay with this? I don’t want to ruin anything.” I sighed. I hadn’t thought about Colin at the moment. It was selfish of me. But…..I didn’t really know about him. I wasn’t sure, but I just knew Lily was the one. She had to be. She was so perfect, it was unbelievable. I scooted closer to her, and slowly rested my head on her shoulder. She was soft, and I closed my eyes to rest. I said, my eyes still closed, “So, you’ll have to show me around the castle. Maybe bring Colin along? I haven’t seen him in the common rooms, or if I have, hadn’t noticed him. You’ll introduce me to him, right? Oh, I thought you should know. If we’re doing nicknames, I think I have one for myself. I don’t know about you, but there’s this thing where you can take a quiz to find your spirit animal, and I ended up with the corgi. So maybe that could be my nickname. It’s what my friends used to call me, and I think it fits.” I realized I had said so much in so little time. “Also, one thing I want you to do is show me Colin. We’re in the same house, right? We should be friends. I’d really like that.” I lifted my head and looked up. “But I think I’d like something to eat right about now. Do you want to come with me?”

Lily smiled as Bailey hugged her tightly and kissed her forehead softly saying he loved her so much. "I love you too, Bailey." They sat down together and Bailey put his head on her shoulder. He talked about nicknames then asked if Colin would lile them together. "Hmm....i think he would since your a fellow Slytherin and really nice." Lily answered as she looked at Bailey softly. He seemed slightly worried but she just gave him a smile to make him relax. "And do you really want to bring Colin with us to explore the castle? Because you will have to endure relentless teasing." She said with a small chuckle as she thought about it. They moved on to nicknames again and she smiled as he talked about a quiz and his nickname being Corgi. "Isn't that what Queen Elizabeth's favorite dog was? It's an awesome nickname." Lily said with a smile. Bailey than said he was hungry and if she wanted to get something to ear with him. "I would love to get something to eat with you." Lily stood up and shouldered her back as she reached out to hold his hand. "I love you, Corgi." She said softly and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
