	----- Another tense moment, terse looks shared between teams as the heat was cranking up. This was the point in the duel that required the most mental strength; the knife edge that could tip either way and see either team come out ahead. Chen was first to react to the new rhythm, aiming to strike Ming with a tickling curse that went wide by about a foot. The siblings seemingly didn’t even pay him the mind, as they both kept focus on Vale. Leveret pulled a smirk when he saw the vengeance in Ying’s eyes. He shifted his gaze across to Vale, who seemingly could sense what was coming. Ying’s wand shot up and she sent forth another bolt of blue, another knockback jinx, and this one wasn’t going to miss. Vale, likely experienced in fast paced decision making because of her broom racing background, coiled back as best she could whilst casting her own spell but in the end Ying won out and struck her target. Vale’s cast, a slowing charm aimed at exposing Ming to some real danger, went off and struck Ming, who had seen it coming. In the game of inches, that was the closest inch so far… Even in his slowed movement, Ming managed to pull off another spell-spread gust of wind aimed at his assailants, one of which was reeling from the first attack; struck twice in such a short gap of time. Chen could at least blame his lack of casting on his expect evasion of the powerful blast of wind that barrelled towards him. “Surely you’re not all bravado, Ashwood?” Avery said, hoping to see a rise out of her in the aim of spurring her on. A duel was most exciting when either side was giving it their all, and a part of him desired to see her go all out. Her partner was lagging behind, so she would be feeling the heat twice over, he bet.

This time, her effort to stay focused had paid out. Finally! With another perfect movement of her wrist and with the right incantation on her mind, Ying cast another flipendo towards Ashwood. The gratification she felt upon witnessing her spell reach its target was accompanied by a slight feeling of embarrassment for being so eager to knock someone down. Her brother's words at the beginning of the duel, that all of that was about having fun, were battling against her strong competitive personality. She wanted to remain relaxed and enjoy everything, even if she was losing, but... her head and her heart refused to understand each other on that matter. If it was on her hands to put them down, then she would do anything to accomplish that!

Ming, with no surprise to her, was able to cast another impressive spell that crossed the piste in a furious spiral of wind towards Avery and Vale. Once again, Chen was able to evade it, it was turning to be quite upsetting the way he was so easily avoiding everything going his way. But to compensate, Vale was once again caught in the middle of the wind that was harshly blowing.

Leveret's taunting did not escape her. Her dark eyes caught him briefly in a request to stay quiet, but the corner of her lips threatened to turn into a veiled smirk. "Ha. ha. ha. so funny Chen!" Ying replied to the Slytherin boy with an amused roll of her eyes, "Don't you want to learn from your own teachings then?" She asked him, sending a sweet smile and blinking eyes in an exaggerated expression of innocence.

Things were moving along, and he could tell that he had gotten underneath the skin on Avery at least, from the boy's reaction.

Good, that mean things were progressing as they should.

A deep breath, magic flowing through him, as he returned to a duelling stance at ready; ready to lunge into another spell, but-

!!! Ashwood.

It was really quite difficult to get a grip on the odd behaviour of the girl, or to tell in any meaningful way what her reactions meant; and his instincts brought his eyes back to her every second. That, more than anything else, had been the reason he had been able to not get hit by the spells of the errant broom racer for so long.

What was wrong with that girl? Every few seconds his focus would be brought back to her dramatically, insistently. She wasn't particularly dangerous, other than being perhaps a little bit odd. But his instincts would be doing haywire regardless.

Another note filed for later, perhaps he would need to start researching his fellow peers -- perhaps magic had had unusual effects on her at this age, with hormones and bodily changes abound. Perhaps it was just him(?) seeing as no one else seemed to be so jarred by her reactions.

	----- Then came a slower round than the one that came before. Avery Chen, feeling the pressures of performance couldn’t quite rouse his arcane ability for yet another try. He called an Expelliarmus to his aid and his want; be it a mispronunciation or poorly executed wand movement, the spell fizzled from the end of his wand. Leveret made a face, but said nothing to tease the boy; Ming surely should have chosen better opponents to try and embarrass. Though, Vale was surely throwing a spanner into his malicious machinations. In response to the last round, Vale bit back; though not literally owing to the unusual and terrifying nature of her sharpened teeth… She slung her own knockback jinx across the piste at Ming, still the target after all this time, and it struck him squarely, for he seemed to lose a few moments in his own mind. Leveret narrowed his eyes, cautiously checking him over with an unscrupulous gaze to ensure there was nothing more serious going on with him. He’d surely find out in a moment or two. - Ying, in retaliation shot the same spell back, but this time it was less powerful and seemed to do less to Vale than hers had done to Ming; perhaps owing to her sheer will to see Ming flattened on the piste.

Ying shot a glance at Ming trying to understand what was happening with her brother. It appeared that Vale's Slowing Charm had taken a heavy toll on him, leaving him unable to perform an action. Was he injured or something else? Looking at him, he didn't seem to be physically injured to the point of preventing him from moving completely, so probably had been the second option? "Ming!" Ying called him with concern wrapped in a firm voice, hopping the way she looked at him, - piercing dark eyes that much resembled their own father, (thing she would never like to admit) - was enough to make him understand she was worried with him but she wouldn't easily accept unjustified distractions.

It was pure luck that stopped Chen from "stealing" her brother's wand, but Ashwood's spell showed no such mercy, hitting him hard and straight. Ying replied on mere instinct this time, without meticulously thinking about her own casting. The bolt of red light left her wand spiriting her frustration and hot temper and flew towards the Slytherin girl. It was also more luck than skill, what made it a hit, and Ying knew it. Despite this, her recognition didn't stop the mischievous smile from crossing her delicate features as she looked at her opponents with a defiant gaze.

A blow to his middle, brought him mercilessly out of his ruminations back into the present; and serves him right for getting distracted at such a crucial juncture.

What the hell was wrong with him today?

An elaborate motion dusting off his robes, a sharp nod to indicate that he was largely undamaged. "Impressive casting, Ashwood, the Knockback Jinx is a staple of duelling” he said tonelessly. “I was rather expecting you leverage your familiarity of spells more commonly used in those broom racing events.”

The bespectacled Slytherin took a moment to spin his wand idly between his fingers, making note of the fact that Avery seemed to rather be taking it easy on them – no nasty curses like the ones he’d seen in the Wargames were anywhere in sight.

And then, there was his sister. “You too, Hui-Ying. You’re holding up against rather well, considering all your opponents are upperclassmen.” A small smile of encouragement – the girl had stuck to fundamentals and not tried anything overly fancy, either to show off, or in an attempt to copy him – and that was admirable. Considering what Slytherins did to underclassmen – Dmitri Jones’ conquests come to mind – that she was still standing was a testament to her ability. “We’re almost there. Let’s try and close this out with style, hmmm?”
