Cassian had been meaning to learn the Full Body-Bind Curse for a while now. It had been in the middle of the Ravenclaw v. Hufflepuff duel that he suddenly realized he had procrastinated too long. When his best friend Zach had been hit with the curse, Cassian was determined to learn it as soon as he could.
So now here they were entering an empty classroom late one evening. It hadn’t taken much for Cassian to convince Zach to practice on him. Zach understood the importance of study and practice and, while he wasn’t eager to be on the receiving end of the Full Body-Bind Curse once again, Cassian had been relentless. Besides, Cassian had already spent the last week and half practicing the spell’s movement and pronunciation. All that was left was practicing on a live target. Unfortunately for Zach, that meant him.
“Listen, Zach. Thanks again for helping me out with this. I promise it won’t take too long. And it shouldn’t hurt either . . .” Cassian paused. “Unless . . . unless I do it wrong,” Cassian hurried on. “But honestly, it’ll be fine! I’ve already been practicing for a while now.”
Cassian truly was grateful for a friend like Zach. Not many people would allow a second year student to practice advanced magic on them. Stripping off his robe, Cassian crossed the room and laid his Ravenclaw robe across a chair. He rolled up his sleeves and turned to face Zach across the room, grinning wildly.
“Okay, I’m just gonna do one or two more practice attempts before real targeting, yeah?” he called across the room. In a rare moment for Cassian he actually paused to think about his actions, like Eloise had always been telling him to do. He quickly decided he was fine and Zach would be fine and everything would be fine.
Cassian practiced the wand movements carefully, just as he had dozens of times. The anti-clockwise hook, followed with the horizontal line off to the right, and finishing with the downward vertical line. Perfect. He repeated the movement. Once again, perfect. Good enough.
Now for pronunciation practice. Steading his voice, Cassian muttered under his breath as clearly as he could, sounding out each syllable slowly. “pe-TRI-fi-cus to-TAH-lus, pe-TRI-fi-cus to-TAH-lus, pe-TRI-fi-cus to-TAH-lus” he repeated. Satisfied, Cassian resumed his usually mischievous grin. Raising his voice he called out to Zach across the room.
“Ready, Zach? Here we go!” With the familiar wand movement, Cassian cried out with perfect enunciation, “Petrificus Totalus!” Immediately Zach’s arms snapped to his side, his body frozen, or rather, petrified. He slowly tilted backwards like a wooden board until he landed with a thump on the classroom stone floor. Cassian cried out with glee and rushed across the room.
“Zach did you see that! I knew it! We did it!” Slowly Cassian’s laughter faded as a sudden realization struck him. He knew that the spells required to end the effects of the Full Body-Bind Curse were the General Counter Spell as well as the Healing Spell. But what he didn’t know was how to properly cast these spells. Cassian groaned.
“Oh shoot, Zach, I’m so sorry! I’mma be right back, I promise. I’mma go get some help. A prefect or somebody who can reverse the curse. My bad, I’m so sorry!” With that Cassian raced out of the room and down the hall, his Ravenclaw robes forgotten on the other side of the room. But what wasn’t forgotten was his best friend currently petrified on the classroom floor. Whoops.
