Kylie was walking around the grounds it was peaceful and quiet “I should have brought a bigger jacket” she said to herself trying to enjoy some peace and quiet she thought about why she came about how she never had peace when her mom was around before she left to ascaban “i need this” she said to herself then she saw a girl in the distance “I’m Kylie what is your name” Kylie said to the girl with confidence to make a new friend perhaps she could have this girl become her second friend she waited for the girl to respond “what are you doing out here?” Kylie asked her “I’m here for the peace and quiet.” Kylie added “i never got much of it at home, until…” Kylie went quiet after that wondering if she should tell her about her mom she decided to wait until she got to know the girl to see if she should tell her “so you like the peace and quiet or do you just like to walk around?” Kylie asked to break the silence “do you want to be my friend?” Kylie asked boldly I hope she says yes she thought I would like her to be my friend she thinks they could be good friends.

As Kaitlyn walked through the grounds, her mind felt more at ease. She was introverted by nature. Like many other introverts, she needed time to recharge her batteries, so to speak, after engaging in socializing for a while. As such, she was currently recharging her batteries. She was honestly surprised with herself, with how many friends she was making at the castle. When she first started, she doubted that she’d make any friends at all. This feeling was exacerbated when she learned how historically the Slytherin house treated muggle-borns. And yet, she was flourishing … in the friends department, at least. She still lacked confidence and essentially had no idea how to communicate effectively.

Chalking it up to not paying attention, Katie was thrust out of her mind by the sound of a very friendly girl trying to talk to her. Her face immediately flushed bright red as the girl peppered her with questions. ‘She seems very outgoing. I hope I don’t put her off with my shyness. She does seem pretty sweet,’ she thought to herself. She waited for the other girl to finish speaking. It was only polite, and she wanted to see just how many questions were thrown at her. These felt like a lot.

Once she was sure that Kylie was finished, Katie finally started to reply. “I … um … hi. I’m Kaitlyn or Katie,” she started. She let out a quick sigh. “Um, p-p-please for-forgive me I-if I for-forget a-any. I’m ou-out he-here t-to cle-clear my mi-mind. Um, I li-like both,” she responded. Her face blushed even brighter at the offer to be friends. She was surprised since they just met. She gave a shy smile. “Um, s-sure,” she confirmed. She let silence hand between them for a few moments before she started to speak again. “Wh-what hap-happened with th-the pe-peace an qui-quiet a-at home, if yo-you don’t mi-mind m-me ask-asking?” She asked. She felt horrible for stuttering. It was a coping mechanism for her shyness.

She noticed the girl was stuttering but Kylie understood her “that’s a nice name I understand being all stuttered I used to that’s different now though” Kylie said admiring her name Kaitlyn seemed shy so she tried not to overwhelm her Kylie smiled when she said sure there was a bit of silence until Kaitlyn asked her a question she thought for a second until she decided to tell the girl she seemed trustworthy “well it was loud because my parents would always fight un- until” she took a deep breath I can tell her she thought “until my mom left, well technically she didn’t leave she… she went to ascaban.” Kylie said the last part quickly she was nervous about how she’d act after she told her there was silence “I hope you still want to be friends with me.” Kylie said nervously hoping to not make a bad first impression “i hope I’m not over whelming you with everything.” Kylie said nervously There still was a silence Kylie thought she was processing the fact Kylie said “do you still want to be my friend.” Kylie asked nervously trying to smile she knew the girl was shy so she didn’t expect her to answer as fast as Kylie did.

Kaitlyn giggled hesitantly at Kylie’s words. “Th-thanks,” she replied quietly. She was in no shape or form a social butterfly. She frowned at hearing about Kylie’s parents fighting but said nothing, as she wanted Kylie to have a chance to express herself. “Aw, I’m so-sorry. Th-that mus-must be ha-hard to h-have yo-your m..mum in Az-Azkaban. Yo-you d-don’t n-need to t-tell m-me any-anything ab-about it, if yo-you don’t wan-want to,” she responded, feeling bad for Kylie. She didn’t know what she would do if either of her parents were in jail. From the little she learned about Azkaban, it was a souless place.

At Kylie’s next utterance, Katie tilted her head to the side. “Wh-why w-would th-that ch-change any-anything?” She asked, surprised that this extroverted girl would be why about that. She knew that not everyone followed what their parents did. She didn’t know why Kylie’s mum was in the wizard prison, or what went down when they arrested her, but she didn’t see why that should make Kylie unsafe to be around. Just the fact that she was scared about it, made her believe that Kylie was not the same as her mum.

Katie shook her head at Kylie’s question. Was she overwhelmed? No. She was just bad at communicating. She gave a shy, but hopefully reassuring, smile. “Ye-yes, I wan-want t-to be y-your fr-friend,” she responded.

Kylie smiled “it feels nice to get it off my chest I don’t really talk about it” Kylie said she listened to what she said “well most people don’t what to hang out with me after they find out about my mom” Kylie said looking down she thought about how much friends she would have if they didn’t care about her mom in ascaban she thought about if she told Tracey about her mom in ascaban “I didn’t know if you would care about my mother or not I just thought you’d act like the other people I told.” Kylie said sadly most of her friends left when they found out especially the muggle born kids “you’re different than the rest of the people”Kylie said “most of them act scared and left especially the muggle borns since my mom killed muggles and muggle born.”Kylie added not knowing Kaitlyn was a muggle born Kylie smiled that they were still friends “if you don’t mind me asking what are your parents? Like are they muggles?”kylie asked “it’s not going to change anything just wondering” Kylie added Kylie thought about her question was it considered rude? she not one for first impressions would this effect there friendship?

Kaitlyn gave Kylie a small smile and nodded. “I g-get it. Y-you d-don’t n-need to t-tell m-me, if y-you do-don’t want t-to,” she stuttered, hoping to sound reassuring. She wasn’t the type to jump into other people’s business. Even when they brought it up themselves. She figured it was best for the person to say it of their own volition, at least, in her opinion.

As Kylie talked about the way the other students treated her about her mother in Askaban, Kaitlyn stayed quiet, letting her new friend talk about it. It clearly hurt her, and she didn’t need unsolicited advice from Kaitlyn. So, she just kept her mouth shut to show that she was actively listening. One of her many ettitquete lessons from St. Ann’s.

Once she could tell that Kylie was finished, Katie shrugged. “I’m s-sorry a-about th-the o-thers. But, i-it d-doesn’t c-change h-how I f-feel. W-we c-can s-still b-be fr-friends,” she continued. She wasn’t aware of Kylie’s friend situation, but she could tell that the other girl likely wanted friends. She nodded to Kylie’s question. “I’m a m-muggle-born. M-my m-mum a-and d-dad a-are m-muggles,” she confirmed.

“I’m s-sorry f-for t-the st-stuttering a-and b-being s-shy,” Katie confessed, a light flush on her cheeks. She wasn’t proud of herself for being unable to talk to other students.

“Thanks for understanding” Kylie said “I don’t like to talk about it that much but I’ll tell you” Kylie said, as she explained her about how the other kids treated her she noticed how much she cared and how much she listened Kylie smiled at that “thank you for listening not a lot of people would listen but you do thanks for that” Kylie said smiling because she had listened to Kylie, Kylie would listen to her she deserves to get listened to like how she listened “it’s not your fault about the others and thank you for still being my friend.” Kylie said while smiling “so you’re a Muggle born interesting I think Muggles are cool unlike my parents they think they’re disgusting I hope we can be good friends you seem nice”Kylie said “and you don’t have to apologize for that it’s not your fault” Kylie added smiling Kylie pulled her jacket closer “it’s c- cold” she said shaking from the cold “should have brought a thicker jacket” she mumbled her her breath as she put her hood on “aren’t you cold or are you good at hiding it?” Kylie asked wondering who she wasn’t cold or how she was so good at hiding it.
