He'd spent half a year without casting a single spell. It was rather impressive how mediocrity could thrive at Hogwarts. It wasn't that there weren't tests, nor exams, nor homework. It was simply that no one cared if he failed them. He missed one class, he missed two. He missed 20, and it was all the same to the professors. They didn't know his name, didn't recognize him the halls.

He was. Invisible.

And that had allowed mediocrity to spread to every aspect of his life, from his hair to his clothes. Nobody gave a damn, and it was as isolating as it was freeing.

Draven looked at the wand clutched between his fingers. He'd found it at the bottom of his bag, and it had burned him when he'd picked it up, fingers gluing to the wood. Unable to come off. He'd tried to set it down since, drop it back at the bottom of his bag and forget about it.

And the wand had stuck to his hand, forbidding his fingers from opening. He could adjust his grip on it and that was about it.

In theory, Draven could cast. In theory, the magic still flowed trough his veins. In theory, his tongue was supposed to work.

Draven licked his lips.

He was hidden in the corner of the large dueling club room, a textbook of basic first year spells open on his lap. He'd stolen it from the Charms classroom, found it abandoned in a desk the last time he'd actually attended class.

Fourteen. He was fourteen. And he could barely cast basic charms.

Draven took a shaky breath, flexing his fingers as much as his bastard wand would allow. "Okay. You old goat." he told the wand. "Lumos." The movement of the wand was half assed. Sloppy.

It was like a floodlight had been suddenly pointed at the duelling club room, brilliant white light exploding from the tip of Draven's wand and banishing all the shadows. Every corner of the room was illuminated, every spec of dust visible. Draven's mind went blank as several pairs of eyes turned in his direction. Sheepishly, the raggedy boy tried to hide the wand underneath his hoodie. What was the word. Non? Norm? Noz?

Dear Merlin.

It had been a pretty normal day for Wren one full of classes. She didn't particularly like sitting through lectures but she did enjoy the end result which was having learned a new spell, potion or skill. She wandered the halls in search of something to do and a book hadn't seemed to satisfy her itch today. She had also originally been looking for Arg but had given up after a few minutes of searching so here she was wandering the halls.

She could vaguely make out a noise from down the hall coming from a room down the hall. She creeped towards the door so her presence wasn't known. She could see a boy maybe a year or two older than her cast a spell it created light. She watched from the door as he attempted to put it out but not being able to find the correct word the spell. "I believe the word you are looking for is knox" she commented from the other side of the door still hidden from view. "That's like a 1st year spell and you look like you have been here for some time." she said referring to his age as she stepped into the room finally revealing herself.

It's good to stir up a little trouble in the family!

Draven's breathing came hard as he wrapped his free hand around the wand tip, trying, and failing, to keep ahold of it. The bloody thing was hot, searing his palm. "Knox-" someone called out from the other side of the room, and Draven had to swallow hard past the knot that had very, very suddenly lodged in his throat.

"Nox-" he choked out, and the wand went off like a light. Which, he supposed, was exactly the intention behind the spell. He couldn't even do a proper Lumos. Desperation clawed at the young boy's insides, tearing him apart as he pried his fingers open from around the tip of the wand.

And it wasn't over.

That was the funny thing about messing up in public.

He couldn't loathe himself without an audience.

For before he had time to scramble to his feet and duck out of the room, a girl stepped forward into the light. Draven swallowed sickly, pushing himself up. He attempted to pat the dust off his knees, picking up the book of charms.

"Sorry-," he breathed, folding the book under his arm. The room spun. "Sorry. I didn't think anyone would be here this early- I'll go- In fact-" taking the long way around the Duelling club to avoid getting close to the girl- whom he could now see, after the moment of blind panic, was quite pretty. "I'm gone," he announced, making it to the door.

"Wait" she said "I didn't mean to come off as rude, you don't have to rush of." she said regretting opening her mouth in the first place. "Look I didn't mean to offend you" she said hastily approaching him so he didn't leave the room. "To be honest with you I haven't really been paying attention in my classes either" she laughed nervously unsure why she was opening up to this complete stranger. She barely opened up to her own family, well "family" she had been forced into last summer. She had been perfectly fine until the authorities had been called.

"I find most of the classes here pretty boring, I rather just be outside probably why I enjoy herbology and flying so much. I guess potions isn't too bad either. It's kinda awesome to tell you the truth" she babbled. "What if we helped each other, you know like study my work together and y0u could refresh your memory and also maybe give me answers at the same time, it's a perfect win." she grinned. This way she didn't have to repeat any classes or stay back a year. This could actually work just maybe. "So do we have a deal" she said sticking out her hand to the boy.
