When she got word of the upcoming dancing event at Hogwarts, Kaitlyn was excited. She loved to dance. Seeing the flyers for the dance they were to be learning, they mentioned the foxtrot. She wasn’t immediately familiar with that dance; she would’ve loved it if it was a waltz. But, she was still super excited to dance.

Thankfully for Kaitlyn, she already had an idea of who she could ask to dance with her. She adored dancing with her friend, Minnie. The second she heard of the dance, her mind immediately went to the Hufflepuff girl. She was nervous at the prospect of asking. She wasn’t forward, and usually stayed in her introverted nature. Plus, she couldn’t be completely sure that Minnie would want to go with her. Or if she was even available. She was well aware of how pretty Minnie was, but she just had to hope that no one else better asked her already.

Due to her nerves, it took her some time to will herself to talk to her friend. As they were about to leave Charms class, Katie approached Minnie. “Hi Minnie,” she greeted her friend with a bright smile, trying to hide her nerves. “Um, do you have a minute to talk?” She asked. “I promise not to waste your time,” she added Her hands were clasped together in front of her, shyly.

Minnie had had a pretty good day until she saw the flyers. It was for a dance. She hated dances. The boys never asked her, so she would always be alone. No one would ever dance with her. So when Kaitlyn walked up to her in the corridors, she was in a very bad mood. But realizing that the girl was feeling shy, she agreed.

"What is it Kaitlyn? Is this about a dance or something?" She sat down on a bench, feeling tired. "You can just tell me. I won't mind." She looked at the clock, wanting the day to be over. Maybe Kaitlyn will have good news. Maybe I can turn this day around. She thought desperately. So she decided to pay attention to her.

Minnie noticed that Kaitlyn looked really nervous, like a lot more than usual. "Is something wrong?" She asked quietly. "You seem really nervous.", She forgot her annoyance about the day with her concern for Kaitlyn. Is it something I did? Something I said? Is it even me? Did someone else-nope. Stop thinking so hard. It'll be fine. Just find out what has her so nervous and try to make the problem go away. Minnie looked at Kaitlyn again, trying to figure out what had her so worried. It couldn't be about her, could it?

As she sat on the bench next to Minnie, Kaitlyn’s face flushed bright red. Was it too late for her to chicken out? ‘No, no. It won’t do to chicken out. I likely won’t have another chance like this. But she seems to be upset about something. I hope this doesn’t hamper me asking her. If no one has asked her yet, and really, why wouldn’t they; she’s so pretty, I hope to ask her to the dance. I just hope she says yes.,’ she thought to herself. She nodded her head when Minnie asked if it was about the dance. “Sorry, sorry. I know … I just …. I can do this. Give me a second,” she squealed, incredibly nervous. Her right hand was playing with her right pigtail.

Whenever there was a social function at St. Ann’s all-girls Catholic boarding school, Kaitlyn often attended either by herself or with her awesome friend group. Once, she tried to ask one of her best friends at St. Ann’s to a dance, names Rebecca. Somehow, Katie managed to ask in a convoluted way that was interpreted to be their friend group, and the whole friend group attended together. While she enjoyed spending time with her friends, it didn’t help her to attend with just Rebecca.

Kaitlyn closed her eyes. She took a deep breath in, held it for a few moments, and then let it out. She opened her eyes and looked at Minnie. “So, um, when I saw the flyers around about the dance, I was super excited. You know I like to dance as it is. Um, and, well, I enjoyed previously dancing with you. And, well, I was hoping to go with you to the dance … if you want to, of course. I know I’m not anyone’s first choice or anything. And I hope no one else has asked you yet. I’m sure you must have plenty of people lining up to ask you. And well, I honestly won’t mind if you say no. Or don’t want to go with me. Or if you find me too weird and crazy. I’ll be fine with it ….” She trailed off, blushing again, realizing how much she just rambled.

“Sorry. I ramble when I’m nervous. Back on point, would you like to go with me to the dance?” Kaitlyn asked, her shining blue eyes falling to her lap, not wanting to see Minnie’s reaction if it was bad.

Minnie's brain shut down when Kaitlyn asked her to the dance. Her mind couldn't comprehend that she would have a partner. Her mouth opened and she just sat there, stunned. Her brain was racing, trying to figure out what had just happened. I...was asked to the dance? I...will have someone to dance with? She thought.

When she came back to life, she blushed harder than she had ever blushed before. "I-I would be delighted. I would love to go to the dance with you." She stuttered, barely whispering the words. "If you really will go with me, of course." She looked at Kaitlyn, her blush increasing.

Why would she ask me? I'm nobody. With her beauty, I bet she could dance with any boy she wanted...but she chose me. Slowly, the blush started to go away, and she realized how rude she was being. She had acted so strange when Kaitlyn asked her. Minnie hid her face in her hands, hoping she would understand.

"I'm sorry about my reaction. It was very rude. I was just a bit surprised. I didn't expect anyone to ask me, so I was really...shocked when someone asked me."

In the silence between them, Kaitlyn’s flush burned even brighter red. While she enjoyed silence and being able to spend time with other people in complete silence, this silence was different. She was feeling hopeful, yes, but also uneasy. She liked Minnie as a friend, and hoped to continue dancing with her. With that being said, she was well aware that she liked girls, but often kept that thought to the back of her mind. Since coming to Hogwarts, she yearned for a friend, not a girlfriend. There’d be plenty of time for that later on. She was unaware of how much that part of her showed to other people. It often made her worry that much more. ‘I hope I didn’t scare her off. She’s so nice to me,’ she thought.

When Minnie responded, Kaitlyn perked up. A bright smile danced on her lips. “Awesome! Of course I really want to go with you. That’s why I asked you,” she responded, her voice very happy now. ‘Great! I’m happy Minnie said yes. We’re bound to have fun together for this, too,’ she thought.

Kaitlyn played with her pigtail again and flushed lightly. “No, no. You weren’t rude. That’s alright. I’d probably behave the same way. May I be honest? I’ve never asked a girl to a dance with me. I’m too shy to do it,” she responded. She looked over at Minnie with a smile. “But, when I heard about a dance, my mind immediately thought of you and how much I like dancing with you,” she added, before looking back down at her lap. “I hope you don’t mind … I know it came out of the blue. This is all new to me,” she flushed again.

Minnie smiled as she assured Kaitlyn that it was fine. "I really can't wait to dance with you again. It's like the perfect opportunity! And I would really like to do the foxtrot with you! It would be so much fun!" She started imagining the dance. She wouldn't be alone at the snack table like she thought. She would be having fun dancing with Kaitlyn, her new friend! I really cannot believe this. She thought happily.

Minnie reached into her brown bag, wanting to give her friend something special. She took out a little statue of a dancer. She had been trying to work up the courage to give it to Kaitlyn for a while, and now seemed like the best time to do it. She just hoped she would like it.

"I...I have a...a gift for you." She squeaked out, nervous. Minnie's hand shook as she held out the statue. "It's just a little something I wanted to give you for being such a great friend...and since you dance I thought you might like this." She reached her hand out a little more, hoping Kaitlyn would take her gift of friendship.

Kaitlyn smiled brightly at Minnie’s words and nodded. “Thank you! I agree, it will be so much fun! I don’t specifically know the fox trot, but I’ve seen it done before and I’m a fast learner,” she reassured Minnie, her smile bright. She also had the added benefit of wanting to learn the dance to have an enjoyable time with her friend. ‘I’m happy I was able to ask Minnie. I know we’ll have fun together,’ she thought.

When Minnie went to retrieve something from her bag, Kaitlyn tilted her head, curious as to what is was. Then, Minnie presented the dancer figurine to her, she mouth gaped open, which she quickly covered with her free hand. Her face flushed, rendered momentarily speechless. ‘That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. Even my muggle friends never gave me something like this,’ she thought.

Waking from her reprieve, Kaitlyn looked at Minnie. “Minnie!” She squeaked. “Oh my God, that’s amazing, thank you so much!” She giggled, accepting the figurine. She quickly pulled Minnie in for a mini hug on the bench, releasing her after a few moments. “No one has ever given me something like this, I’ll make sure to treasure it. I have the perfect spot to put it,” she replied honestly. ‘I feel bad I haven’t given her anything…’ she thought, trailing off.

Katie smiled brightly, removing one of her tulip earrings in Slytherin colors. It sparkled from being recently polished. She held it out for Minnie to examine. “I made these earrings after I was sorted into Slytherin. I’d like to make you something, if you want. It doesn’t have to be earrings. Whatever jewelry you think you’d like,” she offered, her smile bright.

Minnie fell silent for the second time in a few minutes, struck by her kindness. "I...if you'd make a bracelet I'd like that. It doesn't have to be a bracelet though." She managed to say. "I'm sorry again for my response, I'm not really used to having friends." She winced at what she said. It wasn't that she was unpopular at home, it was just that she didn't have that many people to talk to. The only person who she really counted as a friend was Perry and she wasn't in Hogwarts, which Minnie was still a bit bitter about. And then there's Theo...he's...different. But I'm not going to think about that. Back to Kaitlyn and her offer.

"It's really nice of you to offer that, thank you!" She smiled at Kaitlyn, still relieved she had liked the statue. Minnie looked at her watch, a wizarding gift from her parents. She bit her lip when she saw what time it was. She should probably get to her next class soon. But she really didn't want to leave Kaitlyn. How to approach this? She thought. She grabbed her bag and nervously checked her watch again. "Hey, Kaitlyn? Um...I...it's a little....erm...I might need to get to my next class soon." She stumbled on her words again. All she could do now was hope Kaitlyn needed to be somewhere as well.

Kaitlyn flushed lightly at Minnie’s words. ‘I hope I didn’t come off as too strong. I really need to tone myself down,’ she thought. “I’m sorry if my question startled you,” she replied quietly, “My muggle friends used to do things like that all the time …. and, well, I thought it’d be okay here.” She nodded to Minnie’s answer. “Ok. Just a little something to show my appreciation for our friendship,” she explained with a smile. She couldn’t describe why she felt like she needed to explain her actions, and yet she did so. She enjoyed hanging out with Minnie. It was likely her interpretation of a bracelet was going to be far from little.

At Minnie’s words, Kaitlyn flushed again. “Ah, ok. Sorry for keeping you so long. I have to get to a class, too,” she replied sadly. The awkwardness of trying to ask this between classes. “Would you like some company to your next class?” She offered, a small smile on her face. She honestly didn’t mind the extra walking. Plus, she had a muffin at breakfast that morning. They were screaming out at her to eat them. And she wanted an excuse to walk off the extra calories that she likely gained from it. ‘I hope I haven’t scared off Minnie,’ she thought. “If you want, that is. Feel free to tell me no,” she added, feeling awkward again. Her self-confidence dipped again.

"I would like company to class. Thanks again." She told Kaitlyn, happy she'd asked. Minnie got up, making her way towards her next class, History of Magic. Many people found it boring, but she thought learning about the wizarding history was wonderful, and another reason she was a bit of a nerd. She started walking to her next class, hoping Kaitlyn was behind her. What to talk about...what to talk about... Her mind tried to think of something at least marginally cool to say. But all that came up was her blurting strange facts about herself.

Minnie stopped. She had gone one staircase too far. She had been too caught up in her thoughts, so she turned around, feeling annoyed at herself. Kaitlyn probably was getting annoyed at her too. Let's see...I need something to say. So she blurted out the first thing that came to her mind.

"I'm a bit of a troublemaker." Minnie covered her mouth, not sure why she'd said that. Especially since any teacher could be watching. She shook the thought off. It wasn't as if she'd said it that loud. But back to why she'd even said that in the first place. "Acid pops. Sorry. I just blurted that out. I just wanted you to know...you know...in case you might want to..." She could barely bring herself to say it. She whispered it to her, not looking at Kaitlyn. "Take back your offer." Why had she even blurted that out? Who would want to be friends with a rulebreaker?
