It was a gorgeous day, everyone was outside playing: quidditch, with fanged frisbees, talking, laughing, and skipping stones on the lake. But one girl sat on the topmost branch of a shady tree reading quietly almost completely covered by the branches. Arietty sat reading one of her favorite books, Alice in wonderland, for the fifth time. She loved to read, a specially in a tree, and had been there for almost an hour and a half. After a few moments she closed her book and yawned. Arietty looked around at all the students noticing that no one was alone, except her. She pondered this for a moment, and a sudden loneliness surrounded her"I wish I wasn't alone." this was the first time that it occurred to her, she didn't have a friend. Arietty had been at Hogwarts for two weeks and hadn't made a single friend. It didn't bother her at first, but... "I need to stretch my legs" she finally said to herself,"I just need to think things over." She was about to get down when she heard something, laughing, two girls that she recognized: the first was a Hufflepuff girl named Marian Lynch, the other was Avery Edemala a Gryffindor.

Avery talked with her good friend, and third cousin, Marian. They were heading across the grounds and Avery had brought lunch of canned mangos and peaches, her specialty sandwiches (turkey, tomato, lettuce, and corn), and a flask of refreshing apple cider, all were carried in a small, woven picnic basket with a red ribbon trailing off behind it. Avery smiled to Marian and looked up into her favorite climbing tree and noticed a small shape with a red blur was perched inside. She ran to the tree and saw a girl her age sitting aloft in a branch reading a small book. She laid the basket on the ground near the base of the towering giant and whisked up the limbs like a squirrel. Eventually, she stopped at the top. Avery was a curious girl, both in being odd and in being occasionally nosy. She wore a pair of patched-up overalls with a bright, green shirt and a paint-splotched cap, and a smile plastered over her face. She liked meeting new people even if they were Slytherins! She twisted her head at an odd angle like animals do when they were confused or curious. With her friendliest face, she asked, "What's your name?"

Arietty looked down at the two girls as they drew nearer, and noticed that Avery was carrying a small basket with a red ribbon trailing behind it. She wondered what was inside it,"Probably her lunch." she thought quietly to herself, then she realized how hungry she was, it had been hours since her last meal and her stomach started to rumble in hunger, she fumbled in the pockets of her overalls, she almost always carried a snack of sorts with her, and pulled out a small trail mix. When she looked back down at the girls she saw Avery staring back at her. Arietty bolted up the tree dropping her book and her trail mix in the process, when she could not climb any farther she sat herself on what seemed like a sturdy branch and said to herself,"I think I lost her." then she looked behind her and saw that Avery was staring back at her. What should she say? This had never happened to her before, she almost always knew what to say. It wasn't that she was out of breath, she had been climbing trees almost before she could walk, and didn't loose her breath easily. It was the way Avery looked at her, it was almost feline. But Arietty didn't have to think about it for very long before Avery spoke up,"What's your name?" She asked in a kind voice. Then Arietty found the words,"Arietty." She said confidently. Then her stomach growled again and she looked down at her trail mix, which had scattered everywhere when it fell, and frowned.

"Would you like to sit with us?" she asked gently thinking about how some people bolted if the words were not gentle and sweet. She handed the shy girl her book she had dropped and the bag of trail mix. She thoght of the sweet name she mentioned was hers: Arietty. "Did you know your name is short for Harriet and it means ruler? It is a lovely name. Mine is Avery Lilias Edemala, but you can call me Ava." She looked at the girl who at first was pale in fear but now she looked a little more comfortable. So she continued in her sweet (well she thoght it was sweet-ish) gentle way, to comfort the timid girl. She sat onthe branch and started swinging her feet bach and forth. "We have fruit, sandwiches, and cider for lunch and their is probably enough for an elephant," she joked. "Why don't you come down?" Avery suggested and jumped from the branch, even thogh it was about twenty feet high, and landed on the next branch. Then, she swung like a monkey from branch to branch down the tree until she was five feet from the ground. Then she jumped and landed on her feet. She looked up and smiled, inviting her to come down.
