The second year was sitting in the second row of the Charms classroom, listening to what the professor had to say about the spells and waited for the practical part of the lesson. He occasionally drifted off with his thoughts, thinking about what he would do in the big break that would follow this class so that they may get some lunch, before the afternoon classes would start.

Noticing a change of atmosphere, the professor's voice seemingly getting a bit lighter, as she began approaching her desk, Alan looked up finally giving her some attention. The professor pulled herself onto its surface and told them what they were supposed to do for this class, “For your practical lesson, I would like you to pair off and practice the counterspell, using the description in your books. You’re partner will need to use a spell you’ve already learned, and you’ll work at countering. Then, when you’re sure you’ve got it, you’ll switch positions! Good luck, my dears!”

Alan instantly jumped up, watching as many already started to gather and find a partner, when he just turned to someone close to his desk. It was a taller blond boy and he seemed nice, making Alan sigh in relief. He also recognized him from somewhere, assuming je had seen him in the dorms before as he seemed to be a Gryffindor as well.

”Mind pairing up with me?”, he asked shyly, not sure whether the other would want to or maybe even react badly.

As so often during Charms' class (and admittedly during most other times as well), Scott felt very excited. This was one of his best subjects, and when the professor called for them to begin their practice he'd already been clutching his chestnut wand over his desk for a long while, waiting.

He'd never lie and say he was very good with the theory bits.

Quickly, he straightened his back and looked around the room as some people got to their feet and gathered in small groups of two. He didn't exactly have his eyes set for any classmate in particular, never did, and either way he was about to hear a sudden request from behind him.

"Mind pairing up with me?"

Scott recognised the smaller boy immediately, but knew better than to try and remember his name. It really wasn't his strong suit, as he'd learned many times over only during his time at school

"Not at all!" Scott assured him brightly, because he did sound a bit nervous, and then he shone as he turned in his seat to face him. "Do you mind if I ask for your name? It's not that I don't know you, don't think that! We shared a dorm for a while. You had sweets. But I'm just terrible with names, can barely remember my own!" He laughed, but then quickly stopped so not to give him the wrong idea. "I mean, I can. it's Scott Alexander."

Alan was sitting there, leaning over to the other Gryffindor as he waited for him to react. It seemed that he did not have to wait for a long while, as the taller boy directly turned around and faced him.

That other student on top of that did seem rather nice and open about the thought of doing this assignment together with Alan, which made Alan rather happy as relief coursed through him. A bright smile was forming on his lips, as he listened to the other ramble, making a small chuckle escape his lips. Not only did he seem nice but fun to be around, so Alan nodded.

Doing what he had learned as being pilite he held out his hand in a swift movement, ready for a light handshake. "My name is Alan, Alan Vanes", he introduced himself with a small, yet friendly enough smile as he got up from his chair.

"So as far as I understood one of us casts a spell and the other has to reverse it, correct?", the young Gryffindor asked his assignment partner, Scott, to make sure that he understood the instructions correctly. He hoped he did as he did not want to make himself a fool.

After he shook Alan's hand (perhaps a little to enthusiastically, not thinking at all of the poor boy's wrist), Scott took to stand in front of him when the other repeated what the teacher had said. Then, realising he'd got up to point his readied wand right at his classmate's chest as if in DADA-class, he lowered it with a light laugh.

"Oh, sorry about that! But yes, yes, I think so." Scott nodded musingly as he, too, thought about it for a bit. "But remember, only the ones we've already learned! Like... the umbrella charm. Unless that counts as bad luck in here, I wouldn't know..." He pondered over it and looked to the high stone ceilings, then shook his head dismissively. "Probably not. You know, I never knew you could reverse somebody else's spell like that. Always thought it was up to the original wand..."

Then he shrugged his shoulders, and raised his wand just a little again as he widened his stance (which was admittedly more of a physical preparation than the ones he did during flying practice).

"Would you choose one, then? And I'll go first with the General Counter-Spell. Mostly because, and I'll say this to you now only because we're friends, I can't remember too much from last year and don't wish for my first impression back here to be of how much I've forgotten. Remind me, please would you, Alan."

Alan nodded and relaxed when the other boy lowered the wand he had previously pointed at his chest. It was only naturaly to tense up in that kind of situation, especially if someone was not the best at magic and they were second years after all. Alan did not want to be hit by raw magic so he just smiled when the other boy laughed nervously.

"It is kinda cool though, being able to reverse a spell and such and I guess it is possible... You can probably reverse any spell but the unforgivables and deadly ones but I never want to use those", he added thoughtfully, guessing that the other Gryffindor boy would not mind him adding his own few lost thoughts to the conversation. After all this was a conversation and there had to be at least two people or beings to make it count as a conversation. Scott would not gain anything if Alan was just quiet or nodding along, he probably would get bored rather quickly if he did not get any new input to think about and that is what made it so nice to actually interact with one another.

When the other asked him to remind him of a spell he hummed, trying to remember one of the spells himself, before he got an idea. "I think I might start with the Levitation one", he said and looked around the room before spotting a quill on Scott's desk. He cleared his throat and pointed the wand, trying to make the movement as precise as possible "Wingardium Leviosa!", he mouthed and watched as the quill first just wiggled before it actually raised into the air slowely. Not steadily, yet enough for Alan to straighten up in new found confidence, before he turned to Scott.

"Your turn!"

Alan's quill was hovering one or two decimetres above the boy's desk. Scott was impressed; not because it was a particularly hard charm, nor because he had trouble with it himself, or he'd underestimated his classmate; but because simple charms like that always fascinated him. It doesn't matter how much magic you've been raised around, it's always magical.

"Right." He said, "Good choice. And good job. I remember learning that one... Now. It's Finite Incantem, isn't it? Or is it just Finite...? I think you can say both. And then a shield-like movement..."

Scott shifted his body to stand toward the quill instead, and rose his wand t point at it. "I suppose it should fall, then." He was stalling so, because not once has he succeeded in a new spell on the first try. He'd always done something wrong, or rushed over a detail that later revealed itself as essential. He didn't want to miss anything.

"Finite Incantem!" It quivered mid-air. Its vane brushed as if against a small breeze, and the feather was pushed some thumb down toward the wood. Scott sighed, then rose his voice again.

"Finite Incantem!" And so, with a small jolt in the feather's rachis, it was as if all magic slipped out of it as it quickly fell flat on the boards again.

Scott gave out to a small smile, then turned back to Alan as it widened.

"There. If you don't mind, I'll use the same one now? It's definite enough..."

So he began pointing to his own quill, and had it float over from a little behind him to between the two. He wasn't going to lie to himself, he did feel like showing what he could do first try.

The second year was looking at Scott lightly as he waited for the other to react. Alan was kind of struggling to keep the spell active as he was not the best at these kinds of spells that required him to pay attention for longer amount of times. This was also leading to the situation that he was only half way paying attention to what the other Gryffindor was saying. What he however did notice was the fact that he was nervous, so he tried to at least give him some sort of a supporting smile, yet it seemed kind of strained due to Alan's main focus staying on the feather.

He quickly nodded and looked back at the feather that had lowered when he had been looking away into the direction of Scott. He quickly let it raise again a few centimetres by raising his wand and nearly flinched when he heard Scott cast the spell for the first time. The feather shook, as if unsure whether to drop or not and Alan felt some sort of interruption in his control over the spell, yet it had not been enough. Not enough fierce? Who knows, but Alan regained the control over the spell rather quickly, making him smile lightly.

But of course Scott was not someone to back down just because of one mistake, he quickly regained posture and went for a second try and this time he succeeded, because the flow of magic stopped, being forcefully interrupted, making Alan pull his hand back and the quill drop or rather float back to the Ground. Faster than a usual feather as it had the small metal cap to make it better for writing, yet it was a beautiful sight and Alan jumped around to grin at Scott.

""You did it! You totally did it!", he cheered at the taller Boy and quickly nodded, "And yes! Just try the Levitation charm as well! We can try other spells later, you know? This will totally be fun!" The smaller Gryffindor had turned into a rambling mess, as he was excited to now try a new spell and happy that Scott had managed to oull off the launch of this spell effortlessly.

Keeping his quill in the air, white vane and silver details, Scott smiled as Alan cheered for his previous success. He really was nice, Scott thought, and so he readied himself to do the same for that very reason. It wasn't too hard, anyway.

"Alright well," Scott said, and returned to his focused face (not that he found keeping the feather in air was difficult, but to try and get both of them in the zone again). "Remember to pronounce properly and enunciate. That was my problem, first time, I think... Finite Incantem, alright?"

He didn't think Alan would have any problems with it whatsoever. Sure, he'd seemed a bit nervous at the start of class, but Scott of all people knew better than to judge someone's magical or academic ability just from their behaviour. Besides, it was a nice behaviour, anyway.

"Make sure you know what you want to do, as well. It's not like in Transfiguration, I gather, so you don't have to actually picture it, just... Well, focus." He gave another smile before assuming the same face as before. He really would like for Alan to get it first try and all. Mostly, because he'd be able to say he'd helped and given him advice.

Alan nodded and just bit his lip, gnawing on it for a slight moment as he tried to collect his mind. Yet his mind was whizzing with all the ways the spell could go wrong and whether he would look like a fool in front of Scott if he would fail to launch it. He raised his wand and displayed the required movement that he would need, mouthing out, ”Finite Incantatem!”.

[dice 11, fail]Stumbling over the last syllable the feather did not even budge, making Alan sigh shakily and even glance at Scott slightly, to see if he was amused or not by his fail to launch the spell. The spell even was a total fail, making the feather jump higher into the air as if he just intensified the effect of Scott's spell for a moment. Shaking his head, Alan raised his wand again, repeating the motion, trying to actually concentrate. ”Finite Incantatem!”, is what the second year voiced and [dice 24, success] the feather dropped down on the table making Alan throw his arms into the air, laughing lightly.

”See, I did it!”, he nodded to the feather that was once again laying on the table, not even wiggling in the air, making the Gryffindor smile happily.

"Yeah you did! Great job, I told you. What now? Because I could use the illumination charm but... Well, I thought that one was a sort of extension of the wand itself, or however she put it again... Will it still work, do you think?"

Scott fidgeted with the sleeve of his robe and reached out his arm and wand again. It felt like Alan was in some zone at the moment and he figured he should let him try the counter-spell again to see if he could get it first try. Who knows, perhaps this time he'd try and resist the light fading.

"I could try and fight it, this time over, if you like. Don't know how, or if it would make a difference... I've never been any good with control anyway. But I could try, and you could see if that makes it any better practice-wise."

Rotating away from the quill they'd no longer be using, Scott took a deep breath before he pronounced the very familiar incantation.

"Lumos!"

A white light erupted from the tip of his wand, and stayed there, illuminating the surrounding space and revealing the white shoal of dust that'd been swimming between them. He focused hard on it now, didn't even look at Alan as he nodded for him to try and reverse it. Then of course, he wanted him to succeed.
