Ditto the Dark
Alexx Helm. Prefect of Slytherin. Ex-Emerald Insider Reporter. Slightly less than decent at potions. Even worse with first impressions."Secrets are like bullets. Ditto the dark, personal stuff. Folks say they'll take'em off yer hands, share the burden, but really they just load 'em into their own weapons so they can use 'em against you later."
It wasn't a shock that Aurelia was her partner for potions today. In fact, it was just her luck. There wasn't anyone else in the world that she could have shared a class with? Not a friend, like Emma or Reid or Rhea or Dymphna or... well, anyone. There was a wonderful array of people that existed within her year. Many people who she had befriended and grown to love. Many of people who she would have loved working with. But Aurelia Bez... Booz... Beezle... Whatever her blasted name was. She was the leftover. Well, Alexx supposed that technically, she was leftover as well.
Eri had found it in her to make amends with the Prefect of Slytherin. Alexx couldn't be happier with this, because it was less pressure on her. She no longer had to deal with the threat of Eri running about. However, that left her with a few rivals left. Her potions partner included. And how on earth a girl like Aurelia Beezlebohouten, or whatever that name was, got to be a Prefect of Gryffindor was beyond Alexx's thirteen-year-old comprehension.
As Aurelia took her seat, and seemingly reluctantly (unless her blue-green eyes deceived her), Alexx huffed, continuing about what she was doing. It was going to take a lot for her to be friendly to the girl. It wasn't as if Alexx ever did anything wrong, either. It was not her fault that the Gryffindor girl refused to reason with her. There was a logical explanation behind all of it. While Alexx wouldn't defend her family and their decisions, she wouldn't stand to be looped in with that.
However, there was a much more intriguing argument in the air, and as an ex-gossip column reporter, Alexx was following this case like a bloodhound. Forgetfulness potion, was it? Why was it that Aurelia brewed this and took it? How had she even managed to do it? Well, not very well, because clearly she was caught. Yes, Alexx remembered the day in the stalls very well. Sending Dymphna out to get help, and watching everything go down as it did. What was it that startled Aurelia so bad?
Deciding that she could ask that after making an attempt at being civil, Alexx piped up with a, "Hey." It was weak and not a promising start, but it was the best that she could do for now. "Do you know what page this is on?" She asked, looking between the girl and her book. Perhaps if she gave it enough effort, this day wouldn't be absolutely miserable.

Why had Aurelia applied for a prefect? It was mostly due to her feeling very much targetted in a sense. She made far to many enemies compared to friends And wasn’t one to hold liable for the fact that she just didn’t click well with most others or that they just seem to see her as intimidating or something. To be given the role a prefect would give her somewhat an authority over others. Honestly, she had not expected to obtain the position considering the fact that she had only recently been granted a detention no thanks to Emma Hill. It was likely that the house was desperate for prefects at the moment that they’d decided that they’d give a potion addict like her such a position. Well, their loss, her benefit.
Her day was going rather smoothly until she was paired with of all people, Alexx Helm. Child of a deatheater. Deatheaters were dangerous and even though Voldemort had long perished, her Mother always told her that some were loyal to the bones and would go as far as avenging their dead master. Aurelia’s Mother was a Schütte, one of the families who were hunted by deatheaters simply because they refused to support his ridiculed causes. They succeeded in killing Klaus Schütte but the rest of the family managed to stay alive. Now she had to work with a Helm. Alexx was a rather decent person, she had even invited her to a sleepover last summer, however, Aurelia still couldn’t shake off the fact that she came from a family of Deatheaters or that she had given her a detention just a few weeks ago. Aurelia surely didn’t take that lightly.
Whatever it was, the best was to get the potion brewing over with. She took a seat beside the blonde Slytherin. Taking out her potion textbook, she set it on the table. The ingredients were already laid out for them, Aurelia could tell that the unicorn hairs were for the antidote to uncommon poison and the group with valerian sprigs and Lithe water was for none other than the Forgetfulness potion. Easy, it was that simple, she would get the Forgetfulness Potion done like how she did countless of times flawlessly and Alexx would do the other.
With a pestle and mortar, she began grinding a few herbs together. Annoyance crossed her face ever so briefly when Alexx asked what page it was for her to refer to. Aurelia let out an almost in audible sigh, “46,” she said without looking up, pushed the textbook towards the girl. Aurelia hoped that the Slytherin knew what she was doing. From the countless times she had a vail of Forgetfulness potion done, Aurelia already memorise the steps and would do perfectly even without referring to the textbook. However, she didn’t trust Alexx that she would do the same.

It wasn't a surprise that Aurelia seemed reluctant to even speak to her. Alexx rested her cheek on her fist, pouting a bit. This was going to be totally useless if she couldn't get Aurelia to speak. The only reason she had even ever spoken to her was when she was annoyed, as a matter of fact. Well, outside of the sleepover. Alexx really, really tried to be civil, and even show Aurelia that she was not her parents. What was it with her and this obsession over the past, anyway? The girl must be acing History of Magic, Alexx thought snarkily, rolling her eyes.
Frustrated was the simple way of putting it. To have dealt with this for a year was a little more than frustrating. It was annoying, obnoxious, mentally taxing, and a number of other things. At this point, she wasn't so sure if it was Aurelia's attitude or Aurelia as a person that made her feel this way. A big part of her wanted to sympathize with Aurelia, and try to come to terms with the way things were, but Merlin did she make it hard.
If it weren't for the fact that Aurelia was impossible to reason with, she would have tried explaining herself for the hundredth time. Then again, Alexx didn't feel like she should have to explain herself when it was her parents that were in question! These events took place long before Alexx was born, and Aurelia seemed to expect the blonde girl to answer for it. Well, she wasn't atoning for someone else's sins. That wasn't her problem, nor should it ever be.
The more she thought about it, the more it frustrated her. She huffed, loudly, too, because a big part of her wanted Aurelia to know just how upset she was. No, Alexx was not happy to work with Aurelia on this, not at all. And at this very moment, she was silently praying that anyone would swoop in the last minute and offer to switch with one of them. Merlin only knows who would willingly befriend such an insufferable girl such as Aurelia, but surely there was someone. Her eyes scanned the room, silently hoping to see someone who she knew or liked, or even at least could tolerate, but it was to no avail. There was no saving grace. She would have even taken the annoyingly charming Bellamy Landon right about now, who made her both want to rip her hair out and melt into a puddle, but alas, today was not her day.
Pushing all that aside, Alexx decided that she didn't care if it irritated Aurelia or not, and the fact that it wasn't her business at all was out of the question. "Why do you drink that potion?" Plain and simple, straight to the point. Alexx had nothing to hold out, and no reason to make Aurelia believe that she was being friendly or was merely concerned for her. Now, Alexx was just being nosy and outright rude, but she didn't give a damn. If Aurelia was going to make no attempts at being civil, then she wasn't either.

The longer she sat on the stool next to Alexx the more she was convinced that she was a blonde kid with serious case of asthma. With all that exaggerated exasperated inhales and exhales, it was already made obvious that she was displeased with the pairing, there wasn’t a need to let out such unnecessary aggravations as it was simply distracting. Regardless, Aurelia continued with the making of the potion, crushing the herbs as fine as possible. If Alexx did not get started on hers, then they’d both be given unsatisfactory grades. The work they were given was meant to be done in a group and Alexx wasn’t contributing in anyway. The antidote to common poisons would take at least 40 minutes and if the girl continued to sit her ass being inefficacious, then good luck to both their grades. Aurelia would not be the one to blame.
When Aurelia thought Alexx could not be more annoying than she already was, the girl asked that very simple question that’s answer had almost every single one of Aurelia’s personal secrets buried within. Why? It was a remedy to suppress the anxiety caused by an impossible want to forget the something she could never have back. Forgetfulness potion like it’s name suggest would do just the thing but with it’s limits, it was only a temporary cause. Raphael, who’s pieces of life were now contained in the many words of an old journal, he who his little sister missed so dearly that it made her mentally distressed. All those pair of eyes, bright and blue, would remind her of him as if his ghost was always tagging at her heels, haunting her in such simple ways. Even Aurelia found it hard to explain how she herself felt and it sometimes made her question herself if it was a mental disorder, caused my the magic in her own blood, the answer to which she would not know. The only thing she would do was take the potion in futile hopes that he would go away once and for all. Cruel it was to want to forget she even had a Brother, for Raphael to have never ever existed. It was either he came back (to life) or he went away permanently and Aurelia knew the former was impossible but the chances of the latter was slightly higher.
The girl snapped back to reality, unaware that she was staring at the objects in her hands for quite some time when those subconscious thoughts crossing her mind. Like always, Aurelia pursed her lips into a thin line, a habit did when she was displeased. Alexx was no where near of a close Friend and never in her life in any circumstance would she trust the offspring of a deatheater. Therefore, if Alexx though she was getting an answer she would be mistaken. “Potion? What potion? Oh, you’re supposed to work on the Antidote to Common Poisons. Have you not been listening to what the Professor instructed?” She asked. The best way to avoid a question was to play dumb, act like she misunderstood.

Throwing her face into her palms, Alexx groaned in frustration. She would have gotten started on potions, as Professor Nagal would not be very happy if he discovered that Aurelia was doing the grunt work here. But frankly, after this, Alexx did not give a damn. Perhaps she would be more inclined to work if her partner had been a tolerable being, but that was not the case. A Hufflepuff would have been nice; Alexx knew loads of them. But no, absolutely not! She got stuck with bratty and sarcastic Aurelia Beezlebendohoot or whatever the heck her name even was.
Alexx began to pull aside the remainder of the ingredients and measure them out, attempting to distract herself from the frustration that Aurelia was causing. Though, she wasn't exactly trying all that hard. She did whatever it was that she needed to do, but she didn't bother going the extra mile to double check anything or make sure if she were even measuring it correctly. Just because she wished Aurelia would be cursed with failing grades for the rest of her days, that didn't mean that she needed to curse herself in the process. The last thing she needed was something less than satisfactory.
Aurelia knew very well what she meant; she was sure of it! Aurelia might be obnoxious and impossible, but she wasn't an idiot. For that, Alexx was thankful, because she couldn't tolerate a dumb person any more than she did Aurelia, and she didn't even tolerate that Gryffindor girl. Given that, Alexx made it a point to be more annoying than usual. This was simply due to the fact that Alexx cared not what Aurelia thought of her, and in fact might have even preferred it if Aurelia did not think of her Slytherin nemesis at all. Though the blonde girl must have occupied her thoughts, given that she still found it in her to be upset. "Perhaps you misunderstood." Alexx informed her, raising her brows as she continued working with the measurements. "I meant the potion that you got a detention for drinking. Why is it that you became a Prefect, anyway? I'm merely curious."
The older Alexx got, the wittier and more sarcastic she found herself being. The attitude was reserved rather specifically for those who worked her last nerve, much like Aurelia. Of course, she was rather rude to Reid Kovacs from time to time, but he knew very well that she meant nothing by it. Then again, he was rather daft, so perhaps it was more that her jested insults went in one ear and out the other for the boy. She would sooner confirm that with Reid than she would apologize to Aurelia. The blonde knew very well that she was prying, and she seemed to think that nothing was wrong with this, because in hindsight, Alexx did not quite care how or what Aurelia felt, so the words that came out of her mouth seemed almost to have no consequences.

Aurelia wanted nothing more than for Alexx to do her own work and for her to stop asking all these questions with very obvious intentions of annoying her. But unfortunately that hadn’t happened. Alexx just continued, continued with pressing into the topic on her potion consumption. Why was this girl so goddamned nosy? Aurelia of course knew the answer to that. Alexx wanted to piss her off.
With a wooden ladle, brown liquid in the pot swirled as Aurelia stirred the potion twice then trice. She was almost halfway done with her potion, Aurelia glances around the room, most students were still with the mixing of ingredients. It was not much a surprise since she was relatively more experienced than they were, guess the countless hours of brewing Forgetfulness Potion had paid of. Aurelia set the fire to low heat. She know had only one thing left to do, wait, the process she dreaded the most.
Ugh. Alexx was at it again, asking about the potion once more. It was her business and none of the Slytherin’s prefect wasn’t it? Still it would seem rude if she did not provide an answer all though she had not a reason to actually give Alexx one. “I don’t remember receiving a detention because of a potion.” The brunette had said shaking her head. It was the truth. She had only received two detentions in that semester, one with Emma Hill and another with Emma Hill once more.

Humming, she narrowed her eyes and cocked her head. Perhaps she had taken the wrong approach to this. Pursing her lips, she thought of how to respond. They were something akin to co-workers now, so she should probably focus on getting along with Aurelia and not stirring the pot. Or... This was potions, so maybe she should be focusing on stirring the pot, just not this one. Continuing to do her work, silent for a few moments, she decided to give Aurelia some time. She knew that some people just naturally took longer to process situations, and maybe Aurelia was one of them. Maybe she just needed a little time to think on it before proceeding with the discussion.
After giving her a few moments, Alexx started up again, calmly this time. She reminded herself that this wasn't a rebuttal. She wasn't arguing a case or proving a point. This was a discussion, and if they couldn't even do that right, then maybe this was just destined to be a negative relationship forever. "I must have heard wrong. However, I did hear that you drank a forgetfulness potion, and possibly more than one. I know you know what I'm talking about, so let's just be honest with each other here. I only want to know why."
Personally, Alexx didn't think of this as a hard question. It wasn't something impossible to answer. So what? Aurelia was a kid, she probably chugged down a potion out of the mere curiosity and now the whole school knows. There's hardly any shame in that. In fact, it's practically a bragging right. Well, it would be if she weren't a Prefect. Which, by the way, Alexx was still bamboozled about how a student with a potential history of substance abuse would be let onto the team, but that was between Professor Wright and the other Gryffindor Prefects, she supposed. Still, someone who guzzled a Forgetfulness Potion would not necessarily have been Alexx's first choice.
Regardless of her opinions, that didn't change the fact that there were still here. She had asked the question, and it was too late to drop the subject. She would not drop the subject, even. Secretly she wondered if Gryffindor's paper ever covered this, because it seemed rather interesting. They could have done an interview and everything. More publicity for Aurelia, an inciting story for the reader, insane amount of props and credit to the reporter. There was hardly a fault in that. Hell, if Alexx weren't a Prefect and were discovered consuming a potion with strange affects, she'd probably want it to be covered by the news too.
It had occurred to her that Aurelia seemed to always keep to herself. If Alexx were telling the truth, she had never seen the girl with friends. That wasn't to say that Alexx had eyes and ears everywhere, but it was merely her opinion on the girl. Maybe Aurelia did have friends or maybe she was out every weekend, but Alexx was just always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, she never could figure out what Aurelia's deal was.

What to do when waiting about 40 minutes for the potion to brew? Nothing. Brewing dozens of vials of Forgetfulness potion effective taught her patience. Boredom however was something inevitable. Aurelia was so familiar with the potion that when leaving to brew, she sometimes laid her head down to take a short 30 minute nap only to awake just in time without the cauldron over boiling. However, with the no sleeping in class rule, Aurelia could not do such.
Aurelia fought the urge to groan when Alexx continued. Could she be more annoying? Of course the Slytherin knew. It was that day on October. A very unlucky one in fact when she encountered about half a dozen blue eyed. She somehow hadn’t managed to avoid their gazes. Alexx was one of them and she just had to catch her gulping down Forgetfulness potion in the abandoned bathrooms.
Alexx question was frustrating. Did her parents taught her how not to pry into other people’s business. She got straight to the point, no longer beating around the bush. Aurelia decided that she should too. “I do know you know, Alexx after that incident a few months back.” she began.
“Sure let’s be honest.” She had said rather sarcastically, even almost rolling her eyes.
“No offense really. It’s none of your business what I do with the potion. Not unless there’s a rule in the school which states otherwise. I can’t get in trouble for using them.” Aurelia glared, not at the blue eyes but the patch of skin in between the eyebrows. They (her eyes) wouldn’t notice she was intentionally avoiding her gaze.
“People like you, like Anastasia, like Emma, always putting your nose into stuff that isn’t yours to pry into in the first place. I really don’t get what all your problems are or if your just naturally curious. There is no ‘need’ to know why. It’s only that annoying ‘want’ and it is indeed very annoying.” Her voice wasn’t angry, it was more like she was explaining her problems to a therapist. With that, Alexx was sure to drop the topic.

With a smirk the thirteen-year-old looked over at her partner, the smug look spreading across her face. "Well, I never said that I needed to know. I said that I wanted to know." She informed her, maintaining the smirk. "Perhaps it is that Anastasia, Emma, and I all like to live in the light. Not every secret is a bad one." It wasn't that she was attempting to comfort Aurelia for any dirty secret she had under her belt, but it was her own form of manipulation. Aurelia seemed to make it a point to make Alexx look bad and dirty, but she couldn't accept that she had flaws of her own, all of which would eat away at her in time. The difference was that Alexx didn't keep anything a secret because she knew the truth would out if the wrong person knew about her. So, in exchange, she decided to out herself. It was the only way.
There really was no talent or logic to Aurelia's words. She contradicted herself without even saying anything contradicting. "Well, you certainly didn't mind my life not being much of your business when we met in our first year, did you? So, if secrecy didn't apply to me, then how come it applies to you? Did you ever consider that perhaps I wanted my life to be left private, or that I wasn't ready to discuss it? But now that I'm doing the exact same thing as you did to me, it's awful? And don't tell me it's different, because it isn't." She meant it. Every word of it, she meant. Because Alexx was eleven-years-old and unprepared to make that discussion about her family history, and no one gave her the chance to explain herself. Because Alexx despised her past but no one would listen to her. Aurelia had not given her that chance, and it tore her apart for months. It shaped every aspect of who she trusted and how she interacted with her peers, but Aurelia could live her life keeping her own secrets and not having to worry about people like her coming for her. In Alexx's mind, she was the victim.
Something terrible must have happened to Aurelia to make her such a bitter individual. It did not process well in Alexx's mind why a girl of only twelve or thirteen would ever be so harsh. As if life had punished her that much, but apparently it did. While Alexx could sympathize with that, she couldn't stand by the way Aurelia decided to go about it. Whatever emotions she had built up inside her, she seemed to allow it to cause destruction everywhere that she went. Not once had the Slytherin ever heard of someone who was actually okay with the way that Aurelia treated people. One might think that the social cues would catch up, but it appeared they hadn't yet. Well, Aurelia's time for reckoning was here and now, and her name was Alexx.
It itched at her skin, begging to be let loose. All the hurt she felt because now she lived a life of exposure, though at her own decision merely so that people like Aurelia couldn't come back to bite her. While people accepted her and were much more forgiving than her potions partner, it burned at the back of her throat that this was the one person who she couldn't get to see that she wasn't an awful person, and that on top of that this was the same person who decided it was okay to expose Alexx the way that she did because secrets didn't apply to people like Alexx. "You aren't the only person with a hard life." She left it at that, turning her head back to her book, continuing on with her work. She couldn't think of anything else to say to Aurelia. Not for now, at least.
How easily her mood had shifted from light to dark, much like the day turning to night. It was insane how one person could have this kind of affect on you. Alexx had not chosen this. That was her opinion, anyway. When she was accepted into Hogwarts, she never thought about the consequences that came with it. This was her escape, and yet it wasn't. People like Aurelia made a point of making this world a living Hell for her. She felt like she was trapped under a body of water, gasping for air, but all that happened was she got weighed down by the water that she choked down, her lungs filling. The scenario represented everything she meant to say but couldn't, because she was forever guilty in the eyes of the public for events that happened years before her birth. She was forever indebted to the lives ruined by a choice that wasn't hers. There was no retribution for kids like Alexx. And those hurt in the process of these decisions made by the generations before them, those like Aurelia, they did not let things like that go. It was not something that Alexx would understand now. She was still unfolding her family history herself. Things that she wasn't told. The tips of her fingers ached when she realized that Aurelia probably knew more than she did, but asking that question would really be too much. She could only be grateful for those who loved her for her and do her best to look past the individuals who weren't taught the art of forgiveness.

Aurelia did not want to talk with this girl who had death eaters as parents. Her own adaptive mother had told her stories during the wizarding war when the Schütte were hunted. Of course, Alexx was not a deatheater. Her parents were. Even then, her parents were dangerous the more she got closer with this girl, the more she did with her parents.
“That was a long time ago, Alexx. I was simply standing up for the poor Gryffindor, Lilith. Of course, apologies about your nose.” Aurelia said almost sarcastically.
“Helms. It’s in your own last name, nothing it’s private about it.” Aurelia said almost laughing, moving to a topic that had nothing to do with the potion.
“My mother had said she was chased by deatheaters. The Helms. The Hills. Emma and you. ” Aurelia began.
“She barely escaped with her life. You have to understand why I did not like you in our first year nor Emma.” She explained.
“When did I ever say I had a hard life?” She asked, an eyebrow raising. Her life was far from hard, she got everything from her parents, money to spend that it would make anyone jealous. Of course, with such had it’s down sides as well. Aurelia never experienced much of a childhood a normal child would have. She was always expected to be mature and act like an adult, a pure blood.
