Wow....Jake had never had to watch over a duel with seventh years before. The older you got, the more devastating and violent your duels seemed to get. The older you were, the more spells you knew, and the better you were at casting them. But even worse than that was that this duel was full of some of his oldest and most experience fellow duel captains, and some storied previous captains as well. If he made any wrong call, they'd all know in an instant. So he hoped they wouldn't notice he was a bit jittery as he took his place, trying to push down the bit of nerves.

There WAS something nice about this though. Jake was going to get to watch over the duel of a friend. Going against Dmitri was a scary prospect, but Jake knew that Alan could more than handle himself up there. He was tough, even if you might not have known just how much just by looking at him.

Jake smiled raising his hand just a little towards Alan, hoping nobody noticed. Of course, once the duel began, there WERE no friends. He would treat everybody the same. That was kind of why he hadn't really intended to wave at all. Hopefully, nobody was watching that and thinking he was going to cheat or something. Jake would NEVER.

"Alright, so, you guys know how to do this, I know. Just....don't kill each other," he said with a small shrug. It was about all the advice that he could give. Every duellist up there knew exactly what to do, and he had a feeling they were going to waste no time as soon as he said...

"...Begin!"

This time was pretty much what did before, but together with both Alan and her Glorious partner. The set-up was tough. As she eyed Dmitri and Astrea, she remembered moderation with them and it was usually total wreckage.

She smiled at Bridget and gave her a short friendly wave. Bridget was great. Bridget was by her side in a real fight. The other two were mixed feelings, honestly. If she survives the first round, she would already consider it a very good result. She was no pessimist at all, but hoping for an easy duel wasn't something she could afford.

They practised and duelled to a moment, when it wasn't about strategy any more. It was about as quick reaction as possible. Trained tactics, feeling the partners, dancing it all into the spells and try to outwit the opponent.

That was at least something she hoped was her advantage.

The second stage of the Dueling Championship and Dmitri's penultimate duel was quite the affair—as it always is.

A not-insignificant portion of the student body attended his duels not only because he always faced off against what was perceived as "the best" of the other houses at the time but also because a notable portion of those who watched him duel held a sliver of hope of seeing Dmitri finally lose.

All around the Slytherins were people praying and desperately waiting for the Viper Magnate's downfall. So many of them had only seen him rise higher and higher and further cement his status as an undisputed, undefeated Champion, and yet—as he slowly stepped onto the piste—he could still feel their attention on him at all times.

Achieving what he had the past four years has had its share of pressure. One wrong decision could spell doom for his impeccable track record. Stakes were higher for him than his opponents; all they had to do was try to defeat him once and be known as "the duelist who defeated Dmitri." On the other hand, Dmitri has to scrounge up all of the luck in the world and his learned skills and breeze through three to four duels in a row—a much more difficult feat to achieve.

And achieve it, he did—year after year.

This duel is the same. As will the next—his last.

He had defeated some of the students standing across from him on previous duels, and yet he knew none of them would go down without a fight. Sure, it would be a futile attempt on their part, but Dmitri thought a duel would be much easier if his opponents saw that and fell unconscious faster.

By his side were two of his teammates, both having dueled with him immediately before this one, so he was confident he knew where their skills lay. "Collins, Neptune, be a couple of dears and end this quickly, eh?"

Alan remembered his last duel against Dmitri and it sort of filled him with determination to do better this time. He also would have to remind himself to not underestimate Dmitri when he felt desperate, it had cost them a lead in the previous duel and he had come to regret that underestimation. They would be good opponents, but Alan had great team mates who would have his back, had his back in many instances before when it had come to captaincy.

Fateful reunions! Today was the day that he would be united in battle with his first two dueling partners. Every duelist Galton had preformed alongside had a special place in his heart - but Meenauh and Alan definitely took up a larger chunk of it. And finally the trio would be joined! Alan the Astounding, Meenauh the Mighty and Galton the Glorious side by side. Galton couldn’t have anything other than a smile on his face as he positioned himself on the piste.

The only thing that could threaten that smile was his opponents. He’d moderated their last duel - he was well familiar with the trio of Vipers. Standing in the same room as Astrea and Dmitri had been oppressive. But this time was different. Alan was here. Being around the boy just made you feel a little more alive. And that was much needed.

He’d turn towards the Vipers and shout across. His last duel had left an impression. “Hey Bridget! Astrea - Dmitri. Wanna make a small wager? First team to lose a duelist buys a round of butter beer for the others!” Who didn’t like elevated stakes? Surely not the snakes.

Today was set to be another hard duel. That was the only fun kind, though, when both teams were competitive and made every spell something earned, not just a given. Of course, the fun kinds still came with their share of nerves, curling around before Jake finally told them to begin, and she checked her ponytail was secure for about the dozenth time.

Her normally stony pre-game expression, only worsened by the inherent intimidation of duelling beside Dmitri and Astrea, lifted at the sight of Meenauh and Galton. They’d become something like distant friends, she guessed? At least peers who knew they could count on each other if it came down to it. The way they looked happy to see her was really nice, anyway; she smiled and waved back.

Galton proposed a bet, and she should be completely focused on getting in the mental space to cast and react by now, but this was the person willing to buy her a pair of crocs for no compelling reason other than he wanted to. She’d have no problem buying him a butter beer for success in competition. “Deal!” she called back.

But now it was time to focus. Shift her fingers around until they fit into the grooves just how she liked them to. Roll her shoulders and settle into stance. There were people she trusted on both ends of this stage, and they were going to make this duel a good one.

Despite the grand multitude of experimental changes to the mechanics of a duel over the past few stages, it was only fitting that Viridian Vipers had perpetually taken each shift with the same notes of unruffled, resolute determination as ever. After all, bar the inglorious final draw between Slytherin and Ravenclaw the year prior, they reigned nigh-undefeated throughout the Championship stages. In the face of this reputation, it was only expected for their overseers and competitors to attempt handicapping their success.

How interesting it was, then, to acknowledge that the senior Vipers’ key to advancement involved particularly little of the true companionship otherwise associated with their fellow student body regardless of house. As abrasively cordial as they came, it was certainly a restrictive privilege to be considered amongst Slytherin’s best.

Astrea could not claim to have held neither the respectable, positionally-based prestige nor the impeccable win record as any of her captains. Yet between her seniority and steadfast adherence to stoic professionalism, she had instead gained — amongst the growing predictability of the senior league — the enviable benefit of a relatively secure position near the very top of the duelling roster's ranks. How fortunate that our young heir had managed to find her niche early on, growing rather secure roots about it even as she failed to associate properly with her “team”. All three of them were brilliant duellists in their own right, but Bridget had somehow unintentionally become their emotional compromise. Between the intense forces of Dmitri — waspish at best and cocky at worst, but undeniably the jewel of their reputation — and Astrea — who cared little for the social dramatics of public humiliation — they certainly made an interesting combination. Willingly cooperate they did, but more frequently, their dignities fought to compromise when needed.

For those who were familiar with her darkened aura and rather severe duelling habits, Astrea’s austere personality would shine through as she took her place upon the piste with little fanfare. To ally and opponent alike, she offered her glance acknowledgements, but it was clear that she desired none of the amicable banter that often surrounded the duelling piste (and, if Bridget’s words were to be depended upon, the tavern). Even so, the piste held a veritable collection of Hogwarts’ finest duellists and, while she would graciously take the victory when it came, it would be remiss not to acknowledge the significance of their publicity. Readying herself for yet another battle of wits, the prospect of a worthy challenge seemed ever sweeter.

Jake half expected sparks to start flying through the air, just looking at everybody's faces. He could tell that they all knew exactly what he did, that this duel was about to be a massive one. There was an intensity hanging there, visible in the eyes of duellists on both teams (well except for Galton of course, who looked positively overjoyed).

And then the spells began to fly.

Watching these experts duel, Jake studied their movements. There was a crispness that came from only practice, a confidence that came from knowing your wand like the back of your hand. Meenauh and Astrea tried to play defensively, perhaps expecting spells to fly their ways. They both put up picture perfect shield charms, but Meenauh was too slow to stop the spell flying her way. Astrea's block was more successful, sending Galton's spell back ricocheting in his direction, but it just missed him by a hair.

Alan aimed for a rival, one of the biggest threats in the duelling chamber, and soon Dmitri would find his arms bound with cords, tightening enough to prevent him from using his wand. Alan managed to side-step a spell from Bridget just as he did. Perhaps that small distraction was what made him a second too slow in stopping Dmitri's casting...for Dmitri would prove just why he was so feared, as Galton and Meenauh would suddenly fall backwards to the floor, unable to move! Jake's eyes widened as two of the Gryffindors dropped just like that, leaving Alan alone against three hungry snakes.
