Thoughts: italicsWhen Kaitlyn attended St. Ann’s all-girls Catholic boarding school, she was rather happy to be given a group project. Her friend group was amazing; all four were in higher-level classes. It was beneficial that the class sizes were small, so they often worked together. And at times, they did not work together; she often found that the other students in the class were just as hard-working as them. It made it all the more enjoyable, in her opinion.
Since coming to Hogwarts, Kaitlyn had to change her expectations. She never really knew what type of classmates she would get for group assignments. As such, she had to learn to temper her expectations of how the group work would go. Would it be flawless? Filled with anxiety? Would their cauldron explode into a hot mess? Would Katie leave the classroom covered in a potion and in tears? Really, anything was possible, a fact that completely scared her.
But, for today, Kaitlyn was happy to have Lumine as her partner. While she wasn’t aware of Lumine’s abilities, she was hopeful to be paired with the Ravenclaw girl. They were to brew the Herbicide potion. While she wasn’t fond of making something that could easily kill plants, she knew it was ultimately necessary to help the magical plants grow correctly. It was necessary but not something she was completely comfortable with, either.
Kaitlyn lifted the cauldron with ease, and she placed it over the fire next to their workstation. Her Potions textbook was open, and her textbook-quality notes were safely on the desk. She turned to Lumine and smiled brightly to her. “Hi Lumine, I’m happy we get to work together.”Reducio

Before Lumine Frost started schooling at Hogwarts, she was home schooled, by her mother of course. Her mother only taught her, in Lumine's whole ten years, basic magic, mathematics and literature. Home school was very pleasant, and non-worrying, you never have to worry about other people's work, you have little homework and you are close to your parents, but everything has small "consequences". Little Lumine almost never went outside, thus getting barely any Vitamin D, which you get from the sun, at the tiny body height of 4'2. Lumine never learned how to make friends, that's why she has nearly none. THANKFULLY, her partner for Potions class was a nice girl that was pretty smart, she has had a small chat with her that ended well, and she felt comfortable around her.
She nodded to Kaitlyn and smiled back. She shared her list of ingredients with Katie, Flobberworm Mucus, prickly Lion Fish spines, Horklump Juice, and she guessed Standard Ingredient couldn't be that bad. Lumine didn't mind, at least not that much. She has dealt with things like that too. Lumine was pretty proficient and talented in potion making, she wasn't sure about Kaitlyn though, she's sure that her newfound friend would do fine.
Apologies for the late reply, I was a little bit busy, and lazy

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn was honestly surprised. Lumine was one of the few students she felt instantly comfortable around. It was likely because Lumine seemed to be a lot shyer than her. Not that she minded. She actually preferred to be around other shy students. Just the fact that they were both socially awkward gave her more confidence. She absolutely adored Lumine writing her responses, wishing she had thought of that. She hoped that Lumine became comfortable enough around her, to eventually speak. Even if it was simply just a few words. She’d like to hear Lumine’s voice. But, she wasn’t going to pressure her or anything. She enjoyed Lumine’s company, even if they sat in silence together. It’d be a comfortable silence.
Katie smiled to Lumine. “I like the plant hair clip,” she whispered. She glanced at her textbook, knowing that Lumine was correct with the ingredients. Some of the ingredients were kind of nasty. While she gave the impression of being put-together, and it was certainly true that she cared about her appearance, she didn’t mind touching the ingredients with her slender fingers. She rather enjoyed potions. She started the fire under the cauldron and turned to Lumine. “Do you mind getting the horklump juice and the lionfish spines? I’ll get the flobberworm mucus and the standard ingredient.” She offered. While she was positive either of them could retrieve the ingredients correctly, she wanted to propose them doing it together.Reducio

She nodded, and so she went to get a small bottle of Horklump Juice and a tray full of Lion fish spines. Now then, she really wanted to talk to Kaitlyn, but couldn't bring herself too. She was worried, she always thought of everyone laughing at her, if she stuttered, or spoke in a really squeaky voice. In reality, her voice was always sweet and pretty, but unfortunately, she didn't think the same. She looked up in the thankfulness of Kaitlyn's complement. "Than-" she started, her voice was stunning and beautiful, but very quiet as if she hasn't talked in a long time. She blinked in realization. Only her parents and her brother have heard her speak in a normal voice, no one else even heard her whisper. She turned red as a bright ripe tomato and started shaking, she bowed down low in shame. She hurried to mind her own business. She checked the ingredients and she crushed four lion fish spines on the mortar with the pestle. She turned timidly to look at Kaitlyn. She wrote down "Ignore me please, I don't know what I'm talking about- At all, I don't really like to talk and I hope you respect that trait of mine-"

Thoughts: italicsAs Lumine went to gather her ingredients, Kaitlyn also ventured off to gather the ingredients she indicated. She measured out two measures of the standard ingredient and two blobs of Flobberworm Mucus. It took her a few extra moments to return back, having to will herself from giggling. The Flobberworm mucus was so squishy. She kind of wanted to play with it, but reminded herself that she was brewing a potion with her friend. She needed to concentrate.
Kaitlyn returned to Lumine, setting the ingredients down on the table, forcing herself not to giggle at the mucus. It might be hideous and disgusting, but she rather liked playing with it. She had to wonder how one obtained the mucus. Would it be weird to have it in her dorm? Probably. Her face flushed when she started to hear Lumine speak to her, but then felt bad when she saw Lumine flush and shake. ‘What do I even say to her for her to feel better? I understand what it means to be shy, but will she even listen to me? I’d like to be her friend. I’m willing to help her, if she wants it. I just don’t like scaring her,’ she thought.
To hide her shock, and frankly give her something to do so she wouldn’t over-obsess, Katie looked at the instructions, happy to see Lumine work efficiently, crushing the lionfish spines. Her face flushed again, as Lumine looked back at her and wrote down her words. “May I be honest with you, Lumine? I liked your voice. As much as I’d like to encourage you to use it more, I don’t want you to stress yourself out because of it. Use it when you’re ready. Just know, as your friend, I’ll always support you. And, no, your voice doesn’t bother me, I don’t think you ever could bother me,” she smiled brightly to Lumine. “And I get you worrying about your reputation. Look at me,” she gestured to her own appearance, “I do this to appear more confident than I am for my reputation.” She glanced at the mortar and added her pre-measured two measures of the standard ingredient. “Whenever you’re ready, Lumine,” she said, gesturing to the pestle.Reducio

Lumine felt her face grow hot, she felt like a little kid, but with relief as Kaitlyn spoke to her in such a kind and understanding manner. It was rare for her to feel truly seen and accepted by someone, and the fact that Kaitlyn was willing to support her in her own way meant the world to her. With a shy smile, Lumine nodded gratefully at Kaitlyn's words.
"I-I uh- Thanks" Lumine muttered softly, her voice barely above a whisper. She felt a weight lift off her shoulders as she realized that maybe she didn't have to hide so much of herself from others. Maybe, just maybe, she could start to slowly open up, starting with Kaitlyn.
Face red, Lumine began to crush the lionfish spines with the pestle, feeling still a little shaken up, but better than before as she focused on the task at hand. She glanced over at Kaitlyn, but just enough that Kaitlyn didn't notice her.
"Thank you." Lumine whispered, so softly this time that Kaitlyn didn't hear.
With a smile, Lumine continued to brew the potion with Kaitlyn by her side, she hoped that Kaitlyn would be her friend, throughout her time in Hogwarts. Her parents must've been awesome, to raise such an understanding child.

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn smiled brightly to Lumine. “You’re welcome,” she replied. She trained her blue eyes on her textbook. ‘I hope I got through to Lumine. I just want her to feel comfortable enough. I’ll understand if she wants to continue to write down her answers, but I would like to see her talk more. Even if it’s just to me. I hope she realizes that I won’t judge her,’ she thought. Her fingertips gently moved against the page.
As Lumine crushed the ingredients, Kaitlyn patiently waited. She tended to trust her partners to do whatever steps correctly. She wasn’t aware of Lumine’s abilities with the coursework, but she still trusted the Ravenclaw. ‘I wonder if Lumine trusts me … I know how I can get. I do enjoy working with her,’ she thought with a smile on her face.
Kaitlyn felt the quiet that descended between them was a satisfying, natural quiet. Like two girls hard at work quiet. Not an awkward one. She wasn’t feeling pressure to fill the void with her speech. It felt nice. ‘I feel like I could tell Lumine just about anything, and she wouldn’t judge me for it,’ she thought. “So, once you’re finished, Lumine, we need to add three measures to our cauldron,” she continued quietly. “And, may I say, thank you for being a good partner for this, Lumine. I like working with you,” she smiled in a friendly manner.Reducio

As they continued with the potion-making process, Lumine felt a sense of gratitude towards Kaitlyn for being so understanding. She admired the way Kaitlyn interacted with her, making her feel comfortable and safe.
When Kaitlyn thanked her for being a good partner, Lumine's heart warmed up slightly. She hesitated for a moment before reaching for her notebook, flipping it open to a blank page. With a
slightly shaky hand, she wrote in her neat Joyuex Script Font, "Thank you, Kaitlyn. I'm not good with words as you probably know by now-, I appreciate you being patient with me." She closed the notebook, feeling a mix of nervousness and relief at having expressed her gratitude in her own way.
As she added 3 measures of the ingredient to the cauldron, Lumine felt a sense of accomplishment at their partnership. She glanced at Kaitlyn, a small and hesitant smile on her lips. She may not have been the most vocal partner, but through her written words, Lumine hoped Kaitlyn could understand how much she valued their partnership.
After a moment of silence, Lumine opened her notebook once again and wrote, "I enjoy working with you too, you've also shown me that House stereotypes aren't always correct, for that I thank you again." She felt a sense of relief in her ability to communicate, even if it was through written notes. With Kaitlyn's sweet and understanding character, Lumine felt a tiny, little bit more, secure.

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn smiled encouragingly as Lumine went to write in her book. She watched Lumine’s neat writing appear on the page. She waited for her friend to finish writing before she attempted to address her. ‘Just treat it like physical speech,’ she thought. A very important reminder. “Trust me, Lumine, I’m not good with words, either … I can stutter and just blank out at times. I understand completely how you are feeling,” she replied, whispering to her friend.
As much as she’d love to yell from the rooftops, Kaitlyn wanted to not embarrass Lumine and to announce everything that was wrong. That’d be something a bad friend would do. ‘Besides, I enjoy helping others. Seeing Lumine happy with how I’m treating her, makes me happy. I like how I’m slowly getting back into the role of helping my friends. I like doing this,’ she thought with a smile.
Kaitlyn smiled encouragingly to Lumine as the Ravenclaw poured in three measures. She took out her wand and waved it over the potion. “Ok … this needs to brew for an hour,” she said to Lumine. She wouldn’t complain if Lumine would rather stay silent. She felt comfortable in the Ravenclaw’s presence. Her cheeks flushed lightly at Lumine’s words. ‘Oh right … I’m in Slytherin. Sometimes I forget.’ She giggled a little. “I’m glad to hear you say that. I know how weird some of those stereotypes are. I’m happy to have broken some,” she giggled.Reducio

Lumine nodded quietly, a small smile appearing on her face as she listened to Kaitlyn’s reassuring words. She appreciated her friend’s understanding and acceptance of her strange shyness. Writing in her notebook was always the best solution to her inability to speak properly, a way to express herself without the pressure of communicating out loud. She flipped her notebook until she landed on a clean page. She though she might as well get to know Kaitlyn a bit more. But this could be rude though, and the last thing Lumine would do is make her brand new friend feel as insecure as she was before. "I'm deeply sorry if I am intruding your private life, but I'd really like to get to know you. Could we- share our lives back home?
Lumine paused for a bit, then wrote, For instance, I'm Pure-Blooded and I have a younger brother, his name is Nico. Pretty soon he'll be going to Hogwarts- Or Durmstrang maybe. Do- Her quill gave up on her and Lumine smudged the page and she groaned ever so softly. Sorry about that. I can see why quills are considered old-fashioned now. And I, oh uhm you should talk now- if you want- sorry.
Lumine flashed a weak smile at Kaitlyn.
