𝓗ave you ever heard the story of David and Goliath? In which a young shepherd defeats a battle-hardened giant with nothing more than five rocks, a sling, and a dream? Well, if this first round was anything to go by, we weren't likely to see any Davids come-again in the Lemmings today. It may be a good idea to put some money down now on everyone's favorite Goliath.

After the duellists took their places on the piste (and Bex took her place as far from the carnage as she could reasonably get, whilst still remaining in moderating distance) none of them seemed inclined to waste any time, and numerous spells were shot off no sooner than Bex had called out for them to begin.

Unfortunately, though, neither Raizel's Ventus nor Maverick's Bullarum Immortalem seemed to have any effects at all, which was low-key embarrassing for the both of them. Like, imagine the shame. Had their nerves and excitement over facing such an experienced duellist gotten the better of them?

Beatrice had a bit more luck than her two Gryffindor teammates, with her Arresto Momentum cast so confidently and gracefully that even Bex, wary of duelling as she was, couldn't help but be impressed. It was a shame, then, that Alan managed to dodge out of the way of it so effortlessly. If she kept casting like that, though, their odds of receiving butterbeers after this would greatly improve.

Of the younger duellists, Alyssea's spell was by far the most successful, with a rather ugly rain-cloud forming over Alan's head as a result of her Metelojinx. Bex was certainly glad that it was centralized exclusively over Alan, as she would be one very unhappy Bex should she end up getting rained on. Wet socks were the worst.

In some beautiful synchronicity with Alyssea's centralized rainstorm, Alan's Fumos neatly shrouded the younger years in a thick, dark smoke, obscuring them from view, but leaving Alan unencumbered. Good thing, too, as not a moment after this, he managed to dodge a bolt of lightning from Alyssea's Metelojinx.

With one team experiencing a localized blackout, and the other with their own personal rain-cloud hanging over his head, it was clear that things were just heating up, and Bex was on the edge of her (metaphorical) seat.

OOC Notes: Raizel and I have a running joke that Raizel doesn't know Bex's name, so please don't say it in front of her if you can avoid it!

And what do you know? The duel went as far left as Alyssea expected, if not moreso.

She decided a non-targeted but looming threat of a raincloud would be a good strategy against a senior that was likely hard to hit. Beatrice would probably have a better chance than she did, or anyone else on the team, for that matter. Alyssea waved her wand as she clearly pronounced, "Metelojinx."

A rumble then a roar came in quick succession as the storm cloud materialized over their opponent's side of the piste. Alyssea cheered but was quickly met with smoke in her eyes.

The smokescreen spell, she learned, was the worst. Having been up against Zach and pulling this spell as her first move, it was a nightmare to do anything productive while the smoke was up. Alyssea mentally cursed. This senior would be hard to hit from any duelling experience they had but now it would be even worse with the smoke blocking their vision. Alyssea could admit it was a smart move, though.

"Hey Rai!" Alyssea aimlessly turned to face her, probably missing by a mile. "Remember when I did this spell with Zach? Let's hope I can still dodge and aim," she sighed.

There were things to be said about duelling and making the experience of a practice duel enjoyable for everyone present at that time. Alan did not necessarily feel like he had to show off or win, his aim was mostly to perhaps pique interest in the younger minds of the students he was duelling against and give them an opportunity that perhaps they would not get as often. Most seventh years would not spend their time helping out the younger students or at the very least many that he knew of would never let themselves be put at a disadvantage in numbers. Especially with more serious things to worry about like their NEWTs. Alan of course also needed to spend a lot more time on studying in his free time but at the very least he was mostly interested in a NEWT score that came natural to him.

Two of the younger students actually failed their attempts to cast their spells, whereas Beatrice, a captain that took the position near the end of Alan's captaincy, succeeded but unsurprisingly missed Alan. The prefect had expected that they would struggle with the hitting part of the duel, he had less expected that even casting the spell would become a struggle. Which was a humbling reminder of how much he had used to struggle with spells, still did with spells that didn't have anything to do with Transfiguration magic for which he oddly enough seemed to have a knack for.

Alan glanced up at the cloud that had formed thanks to Alyssea's spell, the grumbling cloud did not bring him much concern. After all he was but a single target and from experience these clouds seemed to have quite little accuracy. Sometimes one could go for an entire duel without being affected by the lightning that brewed within the cloud. He glanced back at the quad of mixed houses and raised his wand once more.

"Let's make this interesting,"

he promised.

Casting a spell should've been easy, even when she's on this piste where she quickly needs to go through her list of spells to find the right one she needs to cast. She rarely finds herself failing to cast a spell but this time, she isn't that lucky. “Ven-” the words were cut off as soon as her eyes laid on her target, only noticing now that Alan sure looks lovely and cool. While Raizel hasn't interacted with Alan that much, as a former duelling captain and still part of the Gryffindor Duelling Team, she does have some sort of admiration for him.

Perhaps it was the fact that Alan actually agreed to have a practice duel against them that it's still taking its sweet time to be comprehended inside Raizel's head, still can't believe that this is all happening, that they get the honor to be standing on this piste against him. It had completely distracted her from the spell that she was about to cast and only when Alyssea called out to her that she snapped out of her trance and realized that they were within a fog conjured up by the 7th year.

“Oh, when did this happen?” She wondered out loud but quickly shook her head, giving her face a soft slap on the cheek to get her focus back. No, she shouldn't get too distracted, what a way to leave an impression and much worse, in front of her former captain. Well, not like duelling has been that fun lately and if she were to be honest, she doesn't even know how she is still in the duelling team considering her horrible performances.

“Yeah, I remember.” The idle conversation with Alyssea is at least helping in getting herself off of her own thoughts and back to the duel. “You know, your lucky heels might work.” Raizel said back to Alyssea, letting out a soft chuckle. That duel was fun to watch, duelling was fun. But that made her wonder, where did all her enthusiasm go?

Action: Ey ey oh!

Bea watched as her spell was cleanly evaded by Alan. His skills on the duelling piste were legendary. He been able to evade numerous attacks in duels gone by. He'd been a duellist for years now amd as a seventh year had a wealth of knowledge and spellls under his belt. So why oh why did Bea agree to duel him? Oh yeah, because she liked the competition. The challenge. Nowhere near to what Raizel did.

Speaking of Raizel, Bea glanced her way. The younger girl was having a slight difficulty in getting her spell to hit. They all were. At least Alyssea, the Hufflepuff had been able to work something out. Bea watched as the grey cloud sailed out from the young girls wand and into the air above Alan. She ummed and uhhed about this tactic. She'd seen in previous duels where it had hit nothing but then again had allowed a team to draw by hitting opponents. Her team would see would they, going forward how well this would work. All in all, it was a better shot than nothing. Now they just really needed to focus on hitting and not missing. Damn Alan and his evasion skills!

Making sure the others were good, Bea smiled a dazzling sweet smile over at Alan, even as fog dispersed around her. "Don't worry Alan. I've seen this before. We'll get you back." Was it a bit ominous? Yeah. Did she want to win? Yeah. Alan would have to go down, however small the chance that it might actually happen.

𝓑ex was starting to get a sneaking suspicion that Alan was toying with his opponents. Maybe she was just casting aspersions, and he was just going easy on the younger years in order to give them a fighting chance, but this felt more like a cat letting a mouse exhaust itself with fear before finally granting it the mercy of death. One could only wonder how long it would be before he presented his kills to her on the living room carpet, like gruesome little trophies.

Exciting!

The smoke from Alan's expertly cast Fumos the previous round really did seem to do a number on the underclassmen, both in terms of accuracy and in psychological damage. Beatrice once again managed to do rather well for herself, casting a very pretty Incendio Duo, but either the disorienting smoke or Alan's years of experience allowed him to evade it easily. Raizel also managed to do rather well this round, with Alan looking like he actually had to put in a bit of effort in order to move out the path of her Ventus. Bex couldn't help but feel excited for her on that front, as hopefully her improvement this round meant that she had gained a little bit of confidence.

"Woo, go Raizel!" She called out. The key to being a good moderator, after all, is to eagerly demonstrate your bias whenever possible.

Unfortunately this is where the underclassmen's luck ended. When Alyssea called out, "Tarantallegra!" it was clear that something had gone rather drastically wrong - whether in incantation, wand movement, or just plain nerves - causing the spell to blow up rather dramatically in her face. Almost immediately, Alyssea began to frantically tap her heels and swing her arms back and forth, while making little "okay" symbols with her hands. Bex hadn't even known that she knew how to hit the griddy before, let alone that she was so good at it. You learn new things about people every day.

As for Maverick, it was a toss-up between whether he or Alyssea were having the most embarrassing duel round, as while he wasn't currently dancing uncontrollably, this was mostly because he was just standing there, doing nothing at all. Maybe somebody should check in on him. Not Bex though, she was only responsible for him if he went unconscious or, like, died.

Alan, classy as ever, didn't need to do anything showy in order to demonstrate the current rock solid control he held over the piste. With a simple Ventus, he sent the raincloud that had previously been hovering over his own head to gently drift over onto the underclassmen's side of the piste. Thus, while the smoke had finally cleared, they now all had Alyssea's own lightning to contend with. At least for this round, though, they all managed to avoid it, either by dodging out of it's way or just through sheer dumb luck.

Well, the good news was that first blood had been drawn! Sure, Alyssea had drawn it on herself, but as her victory dance more than made up for it, Bex was willing to allow it. All in all a very successful round.

Alan was distracting. Sure, you can’t help but idolize someone sometimes but that could wait, maybe after the duel or even after the Hospital Wing visit cause that’s where they are all heading after this unless Alan is forgiving and wouldn’t knock them all out in a couple rounds more. If one were to ask Raizel though, no matter how painful it’ll get, she’d rather have her opponent go all out than holding their punches back. It’s more challenging that way and makes it more… rewarding if one were to actually hit.

In a way, she did feel more confident with this next cast of Ventus, recalling where Alan was earlier, aiming in that direction before casting her spell. She heard no impact though but she heard movements. She clicked her tongue, knowing her spell missed its target. That fog sure messed her up quite a lot. Luckily, the fog was lifting and she could hear the Ravenclaw girl’s cheering for her. She really needs to know her name or at least think of something to call her by. Raizel wouldn’t want her cheering to go unrecognized though so she gave her a thumbs up.

When she turned her head back on the duel situation, Alyssea was already dancing… weirdly. “Woah!” It was unusual, one might even mistake it as her doing some sort of funny ritual. For what… that she doesn’t want to know.

Alyssea would not, in fact, be able to dodge and aim, let alone cast correctly. Maybe this was a sign from the universe that one duel win was enough and it was time to retire. She had a racing team to get on, after all.

No, she had to hold up her end of the deal with her captain and stay on the team.

Maybe it was her pronunciation as she quickly said "Tarantallegra" and stumbled over the consonants. To be far, the incantation had way too many consonants. Alyssea felt her legs take hold and started hopping about with her arms following the same movements. Left, right, left, right. The dance was familiar and yet, she had no idea what it was called.

It was probably one of those TikTok dances that went viral just before she left for her second year at Hogwarts. Of course, she couldn't fact check that because, even if she brought her phone to school, the damned thing wouldn't work. Also, there was no internet and she did not own a SIM card for Scotland. No internet and no data.

The rumble came above them and Alyssea took a second to look up. Right, her thunder cloud. When did that get here?

Alan grinned when Alyssea managed to affect herself with her own spell. "At this point you guys are just making it easier for me," the Gryffindor mentioned in a lighthearted jest. He did not care too much as to what exactly they would do. He did hope for them to at least get some satisfaction out of this duel. He himself had decided to move that dreaded cloud that was growling above him, to the other side of the piste. After all he was not very fond of being struck by lightning and was very sure the propability of someone getting hit by the cloud would grow, if there were more people gathered beneath it who could get hit by the randomized lightning strikes these types of athmosphere charms seemed to chase into the ground.

The Gryffindor was perhaps playing around a little, but he had to say he did admire the freedom of testing out spells he might not normally cast in a duel. Especially because these students simply seemed quite young and going easy on them in the sense that this was meant to be fun and not torture, seemed the perfect excuse to let himself become a bit more creative in his spell work.
