The Sorting ceremony 2018-2019
Ruka had slept under the stars since he could remember, but the sky had never astounded him quite as much as it did reflected on the ceiling of the Great Hall. Along with various other kids he had been ushered from the train - which had had a cart of which he wanted to buy a multitude of sweets - into a fleet of self-rowing boats, inside a majestic castle, past a nearly headless ghost, and into the Great Hall, which was full of students sat along four long tables, and a row of - presumably - teachers seated at another high, long table at the end of the room.
Between the group of kids and the teachers was only a raggedy looking hat perched on a three legged stool which was - somehow - supposed to sort them into their respective Houses.
His father had warned him of cliques at schools, to make sure he would keep an open mind and not restrict himself to a certain group, but the Housing Ceremony seemed to be more than choosing a clique to hang out with during the school year. Ruka wondered if this was done in every school or if Hogwarts just had its own way of doing things.
He was lost in thought when the Sorting Ceremony started, only felt a mild confusion tingling inside him when the Hat first shouted out the name of one of the Houses like it was the easiest decision in the world. He was only pulled from his thoughts when he heard his own name being called.
"Ruka Tân"
He startled a little before squeezing through the kids that were still left; Although they all seemed to be te same age, Ruka was still a good bit shorter and skinnier than most of them.
He walked towards the three legged chair and sat down, letting the Hat be placed on his head.
For a moment it was dark and silent, the Hat practically swallowing his head whole, and then;
Halfblood, said a voice; not accusing, just interested. A Halfblood who knows nothing of magic. Curious. And yet you seem to have adjusted quite well. Brave little lad like you... I think I know where to put you...
"GRYFFINDOR!," said the same voice out loud, and the darkness was lifted along with the Hat, as the students at one of the long tables cheered for him to join them.
Gryffindor.
He was part of the Gryffindors now.
With a smile, Ruka nodded at his fellow Gryffindors and skipped over to them, taking a place that was offered to him, and thought about how much his dad would have loved to see all of this.

Senna Southwind's world had been spinning since she stepped into Diagon Alley. Did she really possess magical powers? Was she really a witch?
Her entire life seemed to change course as she continued to cause peculiar things to happen in the seemingly ordinary world around her. As she made her way into the Great Hall, she tried her best to hover close to the back of the crowd of young, chipper 11-year-old witches and wizards. This whole experience felt dreamlike. She had just fallen asleep in her library, that was all.
But as her mind began to drift with the sound of the crowd, she snapped back into focus at the sound of her name. Southwind, Senna!
Oh, it must be my turn, she thought. Senna squeezed her way gently past the students in front of her, whispering a small excuse me to each one she passed. Lowering herself onto the chair with hands clasped politely in her lap, the Sorting Hat was quickly placed onto her head.
Ahh, I see, I see... Senna quickly tucked a loose hair back behind her ear, alarmed by the sudden voice in her head. This magic thing might take some getting used to, she inquired.
Yes, yes it will, for a Muggle-born such as yourself... The hat let out an echoey laugh that rung in her skull, she shivered. But don't worry, young witch, I see a great potential in you... you are a hard worker, a truly curious one at that... She adjusted her legs, crossing one over the other, not looking up from her clasped hands. You value knowledge like a Ravenclaw, whilst being very caring of those close to you, like a Hufflepuff... Senna closed her eyes, letting out a long sigh.
Better be... Ravenclaw! The voice in her head suddenly echoed out and across the entirety of the candlelit hall. A cheer erupted from a table lined with wizards and witches cloaked in blue. A young blonde boy wearing a badge labeled "Prefect" approached her, holding out a hand to shake hers. She placed hers timidly into his and shook lightly. "Welcome to Ravenclaw, Miss Senna." He grinned widely, and she let out a small toothed smile as he led her to the table.

Oh. So, there it was. The secret her mother had never, ever spilled, even though she begged and begged and threatened. A Hat, with a capital letter. That apparently went through your head and decided where you belonged.
She couldn't help but feel like it was a bit disappointing.
Also, she didn't think she was that comfortable with something going through her head. Her thoughts were, well, private, and couldn't the Hat see embarrassing things ? And tell about them afterwards ? What if the Hat told old Ms. Bellensby about what really happened to this girl, whatshername again, right, Clara or something like that ? They knew she hadn't been quite the same after Percy and her little clique had finished with her, after all. She was a Muggle, and she knew she hadn't been allowed to use it against her, but she had been so mean to Nettie, so obnoxious, and she had pushed her and then --
Right. Better not think about it right now.
What if they told her parents ?
Self-defense, Persephone told herself firmly. It's all that was. Self-defense. They can't hold it against me.
"Nicholas, Persephone !"
Persephone jumped and glared at the boy who sniggered when he heard her name. She'd show them not to laugh. She would.
"Thank you," Persephone said politely when the Hat was put on her Head.
'Oooh, right, quite the sneaky one, aren't you ? Don't you worry child, your dark little secrets are safe with me,' the voice said in her head.
'Am I supposed to talk to thin air like an idiot or can you hear me when I speak inside my head ?' asked Persephone derisively. 'This Belbins, Balbin ? This kid earlier just looked like a fool talking to a Hat, you know ?'
'I can hear you just fine, little girl,' said the Hat smugly. 'After all, I am Magic.'
'I am not a little girl, thank you very much.' A pause. 'Can we get on with it ?'
'Oh, patience, patience, you have quite the mind, so many little secrets...'
Persephone blanched. 'Yes, yes,' the Hat continued, 'I can see it all. You know, I knew where you would be the instant I was put on your head, but I just wanted to know some things. Understand, maybe. Such ambition can only mean one thing, even though you have the brains for a Ravenclaw... I'm afraid you're not nearly nice enough for Hufflepuff, though,' the Hat chuckled.
'I'm not interested in Hufflepuff,' Persephone thought coolly.
'Never underestimate the power of friendship, sincere friendship. You will certainly lack it in your life,' the Hat sighed. 'Very well.'
"SLYTHERIN !"
Satisfied, and a bit annoyed because of the Hat, Persephone gave it back to the teacher and went to sit in the silver and green crowd.

Pheobe gathered with the other first years as they disembarked the boats and made their way into the Great Hall. Pheobe was excited to start Hogwarts, having seen it from afar from her home in Hogsmeade and having heard stories from her mother and father about it since she could remember asking to use her father’s wand. As the headmaster finished his talk, he ushered her and the rest of the first years to the Great Hall. The four house tables were just as her father described them, and in the center of the hall right below the staff table stood a stool with a battered and patched hat upon it.
A seam spread across the hat and it began to sing of the history of Hogwarts, the four houses, and the qualities that they each preferred in their students. As the hat finished its song the hall broke into applause, Pheobe joining in. As the deputy headmaster stood up and started to read down from a long list of names, Pheobe started to become nervous. She was excited yes, but nervous as well. She had no idea where the hat would place her. Her mother had been a Hufflepuff while her father was a Gryffindor. All too soon it seemed her name was called and she nervously walked towards the hat well aware of all the eyes upon her.
The hat fell all the way down to her shoulders and she heard a small voice inside her head,
“Hmm,” the hat said, “I can sense a great dedication to hard work in you, but you have a quite a creative mind… Now where shall I put you…” the hat started to deliberate between the houses for what felt like a very long time until, “Very well, I think I know where you should be, I’ll place you in GRYFFINDOR!” the hat yelled the last word and the hall exploded into applause. Feeling relieved she took the hat off and made her way to the Gryffindor table.

"Elwood, Violet!"
Violet still felt her head spinning and a happy buzz all through her body as she took everything in. The way the candles floated over the long rows of tables piled with the most delicious food she'd ever seen. The children in robes, rows of strangers that made her feel shy as she realized that she knew nothing about this world - that it was a blank piece of paper with no map except the one she drew herself, as wonderful and frightening as that was.
And now this simple, squashed hat that was about to...look into her head? And what exactly was it going to find there?
She took a slow, deep breath before she approached the hat in its place of honor, carefully taking it into her hands. She wondered if, with countless children manhandling it all evening, it felt grubby before the night was over. Violet carefully fitted it over her head, pushed it down, and tried not to do what her instincts were telling her and shut her mind away. If everyone did things this way, it was safe for wizards, anyway. And there wasn't exactly anything strange for it to find. Just...a lot of unknown.
"Hmm..."
She heard it inside her mind clear as day, something that made her heart stutter a little, but she shut her eyes in concentration.
"Interesting. I can see a few places you might do very well indeed. You can be clever, yes, and you'll reach the clever answer no matter how long it takes you. You've got Gryffindor bravery in you, a strong will, at least - ready to face things rather than walk away. Bit of a quiet soul, private for a Hufflepuff, but practical! Ah yes. And you'll work as hard as any of them."
She absorbed this, listening to an animated piece of clothing tell her about herself, about these four boxes that she was only starting to get the meaning of. She'd listened to it all the way up as some of the other children went back and forth, arguing over which House was best or worst, which one meant you were bound for good or bad.
"What do you want, though, Miss Violet Elwood? Why do you want to be a witch like your mother? Why do you hope this place will fill in the bits you felt were missing?"
The questions were so specific, after just a few moments sifting through her head, that she was too taken aback to think about the answer. For once she spoke on instinct, said the first thing that came into her head.
"Because this place is secret and special. Because now that's mine."
"Ahh, I see. I know exactly where to put you now...

Everlee nearly bounced with excitement as she impatiently waited in the line of first years. Time seems to have flown by as she couldn’t believe she was already here! At Hogwarts! Her mother would tell her bed time stories of her days spent at this castle, learning spells and caring for magical creatures. Diagon Alley was a place she had frequented often with her mother so shopping for her supply list was no surprise, though it was eventful trying to find her wand. The train ride had taken forever due to Everlee’s anticipation to seeing the school. Her adventurous personality had been satisfied from the haul across the black lake and she had been able to release some of her energy with the long walk up the castle.
But now it was time! It was finally time for Everlee to be sorted into her house, the house that would become her family. Her mother had been sorted into Hufflepuff so naturally, Everlee had hoped for the same. She wanted so badly to follow in her mom’s footsteps. Much to Everlee’s surprise, Hufflepuff was the house students typically did not want to be sorted it. What’s not to love about a house full of friends and food!? The only house Everlee knew she didn’t want was Slytherin…
”Flynn, Everlee!”
Everlee jumped up and gave a little squeak the moment she heard her name called. She hadn’t been nervous in the slightest but it seemed all of a sudden her stomach felt sick. What if she got sorted into the wrong house!? What if she wasn’t sorted at all and was told she wasn’t actually a witch. Her father and older brother were muggles so it was certainly a possibility!
Without realizing it due to be lost in her own little world, Everlee was sitting on the wooden stool in front of the entire Great Hall. So many people were watching her, so many people would know a mistake was made and she should be sent home.
”Oh, sweet Everlee,” the hat softly cooed once it had been place on top her head. ”Gryffindor is a house of bravery, of courage. Ambitious and cunning describes the house of Slytherin. Neither of which are the right fit for you.””
And here it comes… the hat is going to announce it to the world. Everlee had been staring up at the brim of the hat but couldn’t stand it anymore. She closed her eyes tight and gripped the seat of the stool so hard her knuckles turned white.
”Such a curious mind, so eager to learn. Incredible talent is yet to come. You would do wonders in the brilliant house of Ravenclaw. Yet glowing in your mind is the love you have for yourself, for your family, for your friends. The loyalty you have for those you love, your willingness to put others before yourself, and your passion for life brings me to my final decision…””
The hat took a long pause. Everlee’s legs started shaking. She prayed and prayed and prayed…
”HUFFLEPUFF!”
At that second, Everlee jumped off the stool and screamed! Unable to contain herself, she quickly brushed the hat off her head and onto the stool and ran to the Hufflepuff table where students cheered for her. Other kids were excited to have her! Smiling at the nearby first years, Everlee took a seat with her new family.

The Sorting ceremony 2018-2019
The tears from Platform 9 3/4 were long ago. Although Grace would always be on her mind, Mari knew that, at this moment, she must think of her own well-being. Grace did, after all, have the same old Mum and Dad and Lucy as before...whereas Mari was in a new place, one she barely knew or understood, thanks to a father who found discussing the wizarding world her mum came from as comfortable as one's bathroom behavior. Mari was unsure if her trembling was from the biting cold or nerves.
She was close to the back, so she could not see much above the much larger students' heads; thus, Mari jolted, surprised, when a voice boomed from the front of the Entrance Hall: ''Welcome dear students. I am Ackerley Blackburn, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, I will be your humble guide for this evening. Please follow me and we shall reach the Great Hall. Location in which each of you will have the chance to be sorted in one of the fours houses. Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. As most of you must know, each of those houses possesses their own characteristic, their own values. The house that will be chosen for you shall represent qualities that are truly present within each of you. Your future house shall be like a second family. You will also be able to gather points and once we reach the end of the year, the house with the most house points shall win the House Championship Cup! It is a great privilege and merits to earn this trophy.''
A second family? Mari wondered, conflicted on her opinions of the matter. Am I obligated? The last few months of her first family's life had been tense. Once the owl with Mari's Hogwarts acceptance had come at the door, the air in the family's home had felt heavy. Mum would tell Mari that she would talk to Dad about things, like owls, only to never follow through with her promises. Dad, on the other hand, would say how proud she was of Mari but never elaborate beyond the simple statement. Lucy, of course, being the popular, vivacious girl that Mari was not, was either playing with friends or bubbling over her future Hogwarts letter. She never had time for the family emotions that Mari was so sensitive to. Mari instead pored all of her time into her six-year-old sister, and while she loved Grace dearly, she worried that her future "family" would come with the same amounts of baggage her first family did.
She was so deep in thought that she missed the voice's next statement and only snapped out of her reverie due the jarring silence that came with the Great Hall's doors opening. The older students seemed to be peering at the first years as they scurried forward, perhaps sizing up whom seemed of value for their respective houses. Mari looked down nervously; this moment was one of the few times where she felt her small stature was of value. She moved towards the end of the line of students who awaited the deputy headmistress's calling.
It only took a handful of minutes for Mari to feel the jolt of her incorrect name boom throughout the hall: "Haynes, Joy!" She continued to look down, embarrassed, as she muttered "Mari, ma'am," so quietly that she wasn't even sure that the words left her mouth. As the hat covered her eyes, she caught one last, terrifying glimpse of hundreds of students looking at her, the girl who was used to living in her sister's shadow.
Silence.
What normally happens now? Mari wondered in this moment. Am I supposed to defend myself? Mum was in Ravenclaw, but I don't have the smarts for that. The only time I was brave was when I protected Lucy from the spider, way back when I proved my magic. And Slytherin...even if I wasn't a half blood, I can't say I have pride in myself. I'm just Mari. Hufflepuff, I s'pose, though I can't say I'm one to persevere through toil.
A pause. And then a voice: "My dear girl, believe in yourself! You could do well in any house. Though I must say I sense one stands out in you above all else...and that one is...Hufflepuff!"
She scrunched her eyes, fists, and legs; release. When her eyes opened, the hat was off, and though she could not hear due to pure shock at her life beginning, she could see the students' clapping as she placed herself at the Hufflepuff table. Her sorting was done. This was her new family. Mari's time at Hogwarts had truly begun.

Allie had already been sorted into her house, much to her relief, but there were still many students after her that were waiting for their turn with the Sorting Hat. Allie rested her chin on the palm of her hand as she watched each student, just as nervous and unsure as she had been a few moments ago, walk up and take their seat on the small stool in front of the Hat. It had become kind of boring by now to watch the Hat take it's time to decide what House to place the new first years in. One girl caught Allie's interest and made her perk up a bit. The girl had brown hair braided into a crown and looked a little paler than all the rest of the students. Allie crossed her fingers and hoped that the girl would be in the same house as her. When the hat finally called out its decision, Allie let out a big cheer along with the rest of her housemates. She welcomed the new girl with a big smile and claps before scooting down the bench to let Senna sit next to her. "Hi there," Allie said to the girl after she had settled down. "Glad to have that be done and over with, huh? It's pretty nerve-wracking." She joked a little bit.Senna Southwind wrote: Senna Southwind's world had been spinning since she stepped into Diagon Alley. Did she really possess magical powers? Was she really a witch?

The Sorting ceremony 2018-2019
Julian walked into the large room, past the tall man in a grey robe, who smiled so largely Julian just had to give him a suspicious side-eye, past all the tables full of students, some of which barely looked older than her, and some who looked like they belonged in college, and stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by other children. Though her posture was rigid and her arms were crossed, she couldn’t help the wonder that filled her to the brim.
Those lights up there… were they stars? They seemed to be floating, but there was no evidence to suggest they were attached to something. Oh wait! Yeah, she was stupid. Those must be magic. But hey, this was all still pretty new to her, so if it was anyone’s fault, it was the wizards at Hogwarts fault for not telling her until a week ago.
She felt a faint sense of dread. She’d only been told very little about this process, about what being sorted into a house would entail. She hoped she was put in a good house, one who would accept her. She didn’t want to disappoint anyone in this new world; she wanted to make a good impression. She looked at the Slytherin table and felt a sick feeling squirm through her stomach. Please, not Slytherin.
Her father had been too busy to take her to the train station. So, as usual she had been forced to figure things out on her own. If only her mother were here… she’d seen many other students escorted by their mothers, with hugs of good luck to send them off. She couldn’t help but feel jealous. What did she do to deserve this?
After careful observation, she had ran straight into the wall, and although she’d seen others do the same, she shut her eyes and prayed she wouldn’t get a concussion. She had sat by herself on the train, staring at the other students in the train who had already seemed to make friends. Whatever. Hopefully she would fix that once she got sorted.
“Julian Sandidge!”
With a deep gulp, Julian made her way towards the sorting hat. Though she felt nervous, she made not to show it. Instead she walked forward stiffly, chin raised and eyes aimed forward. She ignored the whispers that followed her. With a deep breath, she donned the hat.
“Hmm…” the Sorting Hat murmured. “You are very brave, very fierce, not afraid to stand up for what you believe in… and you want others like you, ones who will accept you and be there for you…” The hat paused for a moment. Julian held her breath.
“GRYFFINDOR!”
With a silent cheer, Julian walked over to the Gryffindor table, full of cheering, happy students. They enthusiastically welcomed her, and Julian felt a sense of acceptance. That hadn’t happened in… well, forever. With a smile on her face, Julian decided that perhaps she did have a good future, that maybe, just maybe, she might actually be happy.

The Sorting ceremony 2018-2019
The day had been a whirlwind, so far. Coming from a wizarding family, Ross was entirely used to the oddities spread around the country, to help hide the wizarding world from the muggles, however, he'd never truly expected to be confronted with something as awe inspiring as the Great Hall of Hogwarts. The sheer scale of this singular room was enough, let alone the enchanted ceiling, candlesticks and gargantuan tables seating hundreds of students.
Ross inhaled deeply, sharply even, and took stock, his attention fixed solely on the ceiling above. The deep black of night loomed overhead, barely interrupted by the distant twinkling of stars and the occasional cloud rolling across the moon. The newcomers sidled into the Great Hall past the Headmaster who had offered his greeting shortly before the doors swung aside. A chorus of gasps and sighs echoed around them for a moment before falling victim to the din and roar of the other students, already sitting at their respective tables.
Ross remained within the midst of the newcomers, occasionally glancing sideways at his peers. To his dismay, he barely recognised anyone. The trio he had shared a train car with on the journey to the school had disappeared into the faceless masses. He offered a smile and a curt nod to anyone he made eye contact with, his cheeks flushed slightly.
The entire hall fell into silence as the Sorting Hat was produced and it sang it's song. As quickly as the song began, it was over. Ross sighed quietly, he was painfully aware of what came next. Blood soon began to thunder around his ears as the mass of people around him began to dwindle. Each one sorted into their respective houses to meet their new classmates.
A million and one thoughts quickly ran through the boy's mind; what if he didn't like the people in his house? What if they didn't like him? What if he was sorted wrong? Either way, he barely noticed as his name was called.
"Ross Tolbert?!" the second call rang out, draining the thundering blood from his ears and pumping it into his cheeks, which lit up a bright red as he realised what had happened. He quickly shuffled to the front of the mass of newcomers and trod squarely atop the hem of his new robes. He stumbled forwards a few steps, much to the amusement of newcomer and current student alike. Laughter roiled around the Hall before being silenced by a singular raised hand of the Professor stood beside the Sorting Hat.
Ross approached, almost apprehensively, and set himself down upon the stool, in front of everyone. The Professor then placed the Sorting Hat atop his head.
The Irish boy felt a strange rush and a shiver down his spine as the Hat's voice resounded around in his skull.
"A Tolbert, eh?" It questioned him, barely waiting for an answer, "Notoriously difficult to place, the Tolbert's are. Hmm. Your mother and father were both Ravenclaw, but I don't think you're suited for that. No, no. Definitely not a Slytherin, either. Not a single cunning bone in your body. Hmm."
Ross grimaced idly, the mere thought of Slytherin set him on edge. The rumours were enough to turn him away from them.
"Mm. A little sense of pride there, hm? Do you fancy yourself a leader?" The Hat asked, coolly, the boy's hesitation answer enough. "Not quite, eh? There is a certain warmth in there, I'll say that. There's only one thing for it; better be..."
HUFFLEPUFF!
The room, at least the table adorned with yellow, erupted into thunderous cheers, welcoming their new classmate with open arms and beaming smiles.
