A Dangerous Pairing
Her eyes were dangerously close to drooping shut as she struggled to keep her head off the desk in front of her. Eleanor was exhausted, having spent the last couple of nights sneaking around the castle, trying to keep her mind off her impending doom. The dreaded letter was surely on its way by now and its arrival spelled disaster. She could only imagine how her grandparents had reacted to the news of her Sorting. The thought of it haunted her every waking minute. And all the non waking minutes too for that matter.
In the meantime, it was all she could do to maintain her carefully crafted facade of togetherness. She wouldn't allow herself to be seen as weak. A weak Burkhart was unacceptable. Being a weak Slytherin was asking for trouble. Whatever she did, no matter how much of a disappointment she became, the last thing she would allow herself to be perceived as was that.
Using that thought to energize her, Eleanor snapped back to attention. Her and her partner, whose name she wasn't entirely sure of, were waiting on their potion to finish stewing before they could move on to the next step of the assignment. She tapped her fingers on the desk as she watched the potion in front of her swirl around in circles.

A Dangerous Pairing
Ruby was deep in thought, solving puzzles in her head, keeping her mind busy. Even if she wasn't doing much with her body right now, her mind was buzzing with activity. Her thoughts darted from one topic to the next, making calculations and analyses and bringing in helpful bits of knowledge. However, some of what she thought about also got deeper, into things she didn't have answers for. Those were particularly irritating at times, but nevertheless things she could ponder over. She would have to talk to a professor or another adult at some point to ask some of the questions that plagued her mind…
Her gaze drifted up to look at the partner she had been working with. She hadn't talked to this girl before, although she had definitely seen her around, since they were housemates in the same year. Making a couple of mental observations, Ruby analyzed some parts of the girl. She noticed the way her fellow student had seemed limp and tired. Was this girl another of the insomniacs of Slytherin? Ruby didn't have a problem with sleeping most nights, although she did occasionally sneak off and wander the halls or get up to mischief. Nevertheless, she always made sure that she could get enough sleep, especially right before and after she spent a night mostly awake. She knew what could happen if she didn't, and she didn't want to risk being eternally tired.
Suddenly, Ruby's partner seemed to gain more life. That intrigued her… what had made this happen? What thoughts had run through the other girl's head to motivate her to keep her head up? Ruby considered talking to the girl about her apparent exhaustion. There were potions for this kind of thing, and no need to just suffer. Honestly, that was a little ridiculous when the world of magic was right at their fingertips – when they had professors and nurses to help them. The girl was concentrating on watching the potion swirl, even though they just had to wait at the moment. Ruby watched her partner's fingers tap on the desk. A method of keeping awake? Some kind of reaction to being bored or impatient? Ruby wasn't sure.
She was thankful that her partner had at least been competent. Many people she was paired with didn't have any clue how to do this and wouldn't listen – some wouldn't even co-operate, and some of the time she had no choice but to do almost all of the work by herself. This time was one of the ones that had been different, however, which made Ruby quite a bit happier. She glanced at the potion again – it still wasn't ready for the next step yet.
With that, she risked making a comment to her partner. “Hey, are you okay? You've seemed rather tired all class…”
