Mahlioz was not having a very good day. Alright, sure, it was a Saturday, so she had no classes. But that didn't mean she had no work to do. She'd spent the entire morning trying to get one of the spells she'd learned in Defense Against the Dark Arts right, but she just couldn't wrap her mind around it. It just made no sense! Magic was cool and all, but Mahlioz was extremely exasperated that wizards didn't know much about logic. Everyone else seemed to be doing fine with this spell, but she just didn't understand how it worked, so she couldn't do it.

It was, to say the least, quite irritating. And it wasn't even the worst thing weighing her thoughts down. Although she was trying hard not to think about it.
Mahlioz had had a book on her bedside table ever since September (which was a first for her - usually she finished books in a week or two at most). It was metaphorically burning a hole into both the table and her mind, gathering dust as she tried to gather the courage to open it. It was just a stupid book! She could open it! It wasn't as terrifying as she was making it out to be, she was exaggerating!

But no matter what she told herself, she didn't feel ready. She'd felt this way since last June, when she'd been to that pride event. She'd seen a flag and heard its name and she'd been hooked. She had needed to to more research. But now that the research was close enough, she was too scared to actually read it. Because she was scared.

What would it mean for her, if she actually figured out she wasn't cisgender? She was already so quiet about being pan and ace, because she didn't want anyone to tell her she was just "going along with the fad" or that she was too young to know. But a lot of the time, gender was even more controversial than sexuality. She had definitely witnessed Reltyl get insulted when they told people their pronouns. And sure, Mahlioz's parents had accepted them with a little time, so that, she hoped, would not be a problem. But Mahlioz didn't just live at home with her family. If she found out she wasn't cis, what would happen to her life? Everything would change.

These were the things that she thought about at night, watching the starry canopy of her bed in her dorm room. In the day, she tried not to pay attention to them. She had other things to think about. She had that spell to perfect. She people to meet. She had books to read - other ones. So all this stupid confusion was at the back of her mind.

Unfortunately, as she finished her lunch and started making her way back to the Slytherin common room, it started resurfacing. And that stress from not being able to get that DADA spell right. And the fact that December was in a month. There was so much buzzing through her mind that she did not realize as the stairs that were supposed to bring her to the basements somehow brought her up instead of down. It was only when she realized how much light was coming in through the windows that she thought to look out of them... and saw she was on the second floor.

Oh, come on, she thought, annoyed. This rarely happened anymore! She knew her way around the school by now, how was she getting lost? Unfortunately, the second year had no idea where she was. Sure, she could figure it out, but she really couldn't get herself to bother. Instead, she used the energy to turn to someone nearby. "Sorry... do you know where the nearest downward staircase is? I got lost because of the stupid stairs. I'm trying to get back to my common room."

I am so sorry for the million years it took me to get this starter done! I hope its length makes up for the time you had to wait! (Don't feel pressured to match it though, I certainly won't in the next few posts). I swear I'm not usually this slow!

Madi had been having a very boring day. It was Saturday, which meant no classes, and since Madi had finished all of her homework, she found herself having nothing to do. Well, scratch that, there was plenty she could be doing. But she was so overwhelmed with all the things she could be doing that she ended up doing nothing at all.

So she found herself wandering around Hogwarts. It was such a beautiful castle, she never really got tired of looking at it or walking around it. So she often did that on weekends. Many times, she found it preferable to staying in her common room or library all day, like she would have normally done.

She'd gone to lunch and then headed up to the corridors, meaning to explore a bit more before ultimately heading to the library, where she knew she'd end up at the end of the day.

She stood off toward the wall, deciding where to go next. Up near her common room? Down near the kitchen? Outside to the lake? She was also trying to avoid the crowd of students that swarmed the hallways after lunch.

Someone else came up to her and asked her for directions to the nearest downward staircase. Madi looked at the student. They had curly dark brown hair and bright green eyes. They were about Madi's height. Madi wasn't sure what pronouns they went by. They were also certainly a Slytherin, if they were trying to get downstairs to their common room.

"Oh, sorry, I don't." Madi said apologetically. She turned to someone else walking nearby. "Excuse me? Do you know where the nearest downward staircase is? They got lost trying to get to their common room." she asked.

Was he supposed to be roaming around here in the corridors, probably not. But getting a breath of fresh air without actually stepping outside in Scottish November weather was more important then some rules, in his humble opinion. But what he didn't take into account was his other classmates, here for other reasons rather then simply wandering and letting the castle take you wherever it wanted you to go. Being away from his fellow Gryffindors was a godsend, really. The firsties were too energetic, the seniors were depressed, everyone was too stressed. Hey, that rhymed. Maybe he should make a song with that.

Bap, G. Or should it be in the minor key? His train of thought was stopped in the tracks when the girl called out to him about the other persons dilemma, and he stopped his feet in time that looked natural enough, sporting a sheepish grin and a chuckle. He was right about to walk past without a word, so that was certainly embarrassing. "They.. huh? Downstairs staircase?" Divus was quiet for a moment, thinking. How he had no idea, he didn't know. He walked these halls all the time to get to his classes. But he supposed that was different somehow.

"Go back the other way, maybe? Sorry I can't be of more help, snakie. Magic stairwells ain't my specialty." Divus gave a halfhearted shrug, a warm grin on his face. Just because he was pissed at the world and the lack of sleep was getting to him, don't mean he had the right to make anyone else mad or sad. So he was respectful, as he usually was. He just wanted to go back to his bed and sleep for the whole day, but he knew that was a terrible idea in the long run.

Ah, great. Mahlioz had asked someone who was just as lost as her in terms of where her common room was. She was going to thank the girl and decide to just search on her own, but the other's next words stopped her in her tracks. Okay, first of all, the girl - a Ravenclaw, based on her robes - was being kind and trying to help her by asking someone else. But that wasn't what had surprised Mahlioz. It was the fact that she'd called her a they.

Honestly, she wasn't sure why it surprised her. She had short hair and not a very feminine look - it was rather easy to be confused. What should have been surprising was that no one had done so yet (or at least, that she knew of). Mahlioz had never been spoken about using they/them pronouns; that was Reltyl's thing. And now she had. And she had no idea how to feel about it. But it was very different - it left her feeling something for sure.

Right. The conversation wasn't over. She thankfully hadn't zoned out for more than a second or two, but she still felt weird all over. How could one word change her like this? "Oh, no, don't worry about it, that's okay," she said, blinking. The guy the Ravenclaw had stopped seemed very lost in thought, though kind. "I can... look for it. On my own." Her sentences were getting choppy. She really needed to stop thinking about that they.

He'd suggested going back the other way, which could be helpful. Maybe. If the stairs were really willing to let her go back to the Great Hall, where she'd come from. She doubted that quite a bit, considering how much more was on her mind suddenly. Since when had pronouns been important to her? Since now, apparently.

I'm thinking this could be a good place to end it? I know it's super short but it's lasted quite a while ooc, and I'm good with ending it here if you are. If not you are totally free to write another post (if you want to follow Mahl/talk to her/whatever), let me know what you think!
