Twinkling stars covered the night sky as wispy clouds danced across the moon. It was a calm night, the cool air seeming to carry a sense of excitement, of anticipation. This was to be expected, the new school year was beginning in a matter of hours. Finley Greer, standing alone, watched as the Hogwarts Express drew closer and closer. Billows of steam trailed behind the engine, students already craning their necks out the window hoping to get a glimpse of what awaited them.
They wouldn’t see the castle, not yet. They had to get through a bit of their boat ride before they would be able to lay their eyes on their new home.
The train came to a screeching halt, and students seemed to explode out of the doors of the train, itching to get off. Most students peeled off and started towards the path to Hogwarts Castle, but a group of the youngest students looked quite lost and confused, and some even looked afraid. Perhaps they should be, as things were awaiting them that even Finley was unaware of.
The caretaker cupped her hands around her mouth, shouting as best she could. “First years, over here! Leave everything behind! Miss Hawkins, you are not a first-year! You take the carriages.” She waited a few moments as the incoming year of students began to congregate around her. She waited a minute or two before repeating herself, wanting to make sure that no one was left feeling confused or left behind.
“Right then, is this everyone? Miss Hawkins, I know that’s just you with a moustache. Go.” She sighed, some of these upperclassmen were beginning to test her patience. “Alright, I’m Miss Finley Greer, the caretaker of Hogwarts Castle. Don’t break everything you touch and it’ll be easy to stay on my good side.” She winked, mostly joking. Mostly. She clapped her hands together, drawing people’s attention once more. “Tonight, you’re getting a special view of where you’ll be spending your next seven years, as we’ll be traveling to the castle by boat. After that, you’ll all be taken to the Great Hall for your sorting ceremony, where you’ll be sorted into one of four houses. I’m sure you all chatted about that on the way here. These two things only happen once during your time at Hogwarts, there are no do-overs. No pressure.”
Finley stepped aside, revealing the wooden boats that would whisk the students to their new home. “Go ahead and pick a boat, sit with whoever you’d like. Just no more than FOUR to a boat. Got that? Four. Alright, off you go!” Fin stepped aside, giving space for the youngsters to mingle and find their boats. She’d offer help to anyone who needed a hand getting into their boat before doing a final head count.

To select a boat, write a note at the top or bottom of your first post indicating which boat you'd like to join.
Boat 7: OPEN (4)
Boat 8: Alon Naama (NPC), Alexander Mason, Nellie Lam OPEN (1)
Boat 9: OPEN (4)
Boat 10: Dennis Tumberton, Uri Davies OPEN (2)
Wondering where boats 1-6 are? Or curious why this is "Group 2"? This post, as well as the first mod post in this thread, will explain all...OOC note to all incoming first years:
Welcome to your first-year entrance! I hope you're ready for an adventure!
- This is an "open thread", so feel free to join whenever, even if the boats are already on the move (in which case, act like you've been there the whole time). I'll keep the list of boats above up to date so that you know which boats are open for you to join. Please note in your post what boat you are joining! If not, a warning owl will be sent, and your post may be deleted.
- I will be posting in this thread every 2-3 weeks to do a "mod post", helping facilitate your character's journey, and making things... interesting. Please do not write beyond what I have described in the mod posts (seeing the castle, the boats moving, etc.)
- A helpful tip for a big group thread like this is to tag the people you're interacting with (the people in your boat) so that you don't have to read everyone's posts, only the people you're talking to. To tag someone, put their name between two mention brackets, like so:- All RPG rules apply. You do NOT need to be “indexed” to participate in this thread, all are welcome! Word count minimum per post is 200 words of your own work, not including quotes, ooc chat or other people's words. Any "flood" messages (posts under 200 words) will be deleted after a warning owl is sent.Code: Select all
Full Name
- If you are having a hard time meeting the 200 word count expectation try to be descriptive: How was the trip here? How are you feeling? What boat are you joining and why? If you have any questions about this thread, please don't hesitate to send me an owl!

Today Alon learned how easy it was to fall asleep on trains. The rhythmic chug chug chug of the Hogwarts Express was practically a lullaby, only to be abruptly awoken by some upper-year shaking him awake saying they'd arrived. He was blearily rubbing his eyes as he heard some sort of instruction being barked at him from a tall lady. They weren't at the castle, so they clearly hadn't 'arrived' yet, Mr. Rude Upper Year. "First year, guess that's me." He stifled a yawn as he shuffled with the other unsorted 11 year olds towards a massive lake that sprawled before his eyes.
Alon understood that the tall lady (she said her name was Ripley Beer or something like that) was speaking to the group of them, but he was too busy recovering from his nap to fully comprehend the words that came out of her mouth. Pick a boat, don't fall in, that seemed to be the gist of it. Why they couldn't just be dropped off in front of the castle itself was a mystery to him, and the whole thing just seemed kind of silly.
Finally starting to regain alertness, he plopped down into the boat closest to him, the wooden structure rocking slightly as he did so. All there was left to do was wait.

Alex was more then happy when he heard a voice calling to him, well not him in particular. But to the first years. Gosh. He was so nervous. He had never been this far away from his parents before. His heart was pounding. He did not feel amazing about leaving all of his things behind, he had really important stuff in there, stuff that he cared about deeply. If anything bad happened to them he did not know what he would do. Cry would be the most likely thing.
He looked over the water, confused on what would be going on. Why the other years would not be going the same way as them, and why they were not going with the other years. The girl that had called all the first years had said it would be a so called 'special view'. Rules had been said, and of course Alex had listened most intently. He would have taken notes if he a pen and paper. After all, they would be going over magical waters. With who knows what danger underneath.
And unlike some of the other students Alex had no clue on any magic, growing up without it. As a muggle(?) He thought it was called. Non magic folks. He took a deep breath as they were told to pick a boat. No more then four to a boat. That seamed easy enough. Looking around he saw them filling at a reasonable speed. Not that he could see much, with it being night. And he did not have any night vision. He could see enough. And that was good for him.
Alex walked to a boat, just looking for one that was not full. Or one that had three people, as he did not want to accidently take some one's spot. So he took a seat in a boat that only had one boy in it. One was fine, he would be most sure that they would not be waiting for anyone, as they would have joined with him right? "Hi, sorry hope you dont mind my joining." He said as he took a seat, one close to the end of the boat, or front depending on how you looked at it. The one that was closest to the land. The boat made a bit of sway as he sat. As expected.
Even with the slight chill of the night, Alex was swatting, from the nerves. He wiped his hands on his new, and rather uncomfortable robes. He was under the understanding that this is what most wizards wore, it also happened to be the uniform. So he hoped that he would get used to it sooner. He took another deep breath. Since it was all magic and what not here, noting to bad would happen, thats what he kept telling himself.

This was it. Hogwarts. They’d arrived.
Nellie had tried to sleep on the train. She really had. But a mesh of anxiety and excitement kept her awake and very much alert. The girl wasn’t scared, per say. Her parents had told her all about the Battle of Hogwarts and some of the darker things that happened there once upon a time, but this was a new era. Surely things were better now. At the very least, the had to be safer, right?
As the train slowed, she'd joined the throng of students gathering at the doors, preparing to get off. "Pardon me. Excuse me." The timid first year was jostled to and fro by some of the older students, as well as those unable to contain their excitement.
As the finally disembarked, she took in the scene before her. The students that seemed to know what they were doing went one direction. Ever the follower, Nellie moved to join them. But then someone called out to the first years, someone that seemed to be in charge at the moment. So the girl changed course and moved closer, along with the other first years.
As she listened to the woman, she scanned the area, studying the students that would be her classmates for the next seven years. Pushing her glasses back up onto her face, she refocused her attention onto Miss Greer. Her hand moved from glasses to smooth down her braid. The instructions were simple. Find a boat. But for a socially anxious pre-teen, the practice was not.
Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she moved to the boats and picked one at random. There were already two boys in the boat. This was good. School meant making friends, right? "Hi. Um... I'm Nellie. I'm just gonna..." She gestured to an empty seat, letting her words trail off as she climbed into the boat. The young woman did not hide her nerves well at all.

Dennis woke up as the Hogwarts Express was slowing down. Dreary eyed at first, he looked around to see the other students racing around the corridors waiting to get out as quick as possible, even before the train came to a complete stop. He was finally snapped awake when he heard cries of “We’re here, we’re here! I can’t believe it!” Could it be true? Dennis assumed the ride would be much longer!
Losing track of all his things, he raced with the other students to push out of the train car as fast as possible! He couldn’t believe it! However, there were so many students and the door was only so big, it felt like forever before he finally shouldered his way out at last.
Once out of the train compartment, Dennis found himself just kind of wandering about. A group of students much older than he were filing into a separate line of what looked like horseless carriages. That didn’t seem like the line of him. It took awhile but someone came to get all the first year ducklings all in a row and Dennis found himself just following along.
Everything was so new, so strange. It was his first time without his family and he felt a small pang of fight as he caught himself looking around several times for his parents or his siblings. Everything was going to be alright, he told himself. His parents and their parents all went to Hogwarts just fine and they all survived…except for great-uncle Larry.
The students were all piling into the boats ahead of him and when it was his turn the redhead picked a lonely boat to sit in. In his mind it was always best to be first, that way he never had to introduce himself first.

Uri had never ridden on an old-timey steam train he'd gotten onto the Hogwarts Express, The Underground was one thing but this was completely different. That being said, it was a really neat experience: the sites, the sounds, the overall experience, overall it was a great time. He'd spent a pretty large amount of time just sat to himself daydreaming in one of the emptier cars. He was just wondering: wondering what Hogwarts would be like, wondering what house he would get it, and wondering if he'd even be any good at magic. All he knew was that he was going to do his best and see what happened.
In the end, he got up and stripped out of his Seamus Coleman Everton kit and replaced it with his new Hogwarts robes. He had no idea what house he was going to be in but couldn't wait to find out. Once he was out of the train he started looking for where to go. He had no idea until he heard a voice calling for first years to gather round. It sounded a good idea as any so Uri headed over. They walked for a bit before he saw the wooden boats. He hopped in one with a tall redheaded boy and got ready for the journey, by way of an introduction he gave a lazy wave and a, "sup".

Having changed into her, for now, colorless school uniform shortly before arriving and already ready to disembark Eleanor waited near the train doors until said vehicle comes to a stop. Exited to start her first year at Hogwarts the brown-haired girl quickly gets of the train and looks around. So this is Hogsmeade Station? She wonders aloud. Eleanor has heard much about Hogwarts and its surrounding lands from her brother Niel. Oh how long she has waited to get here.
Most students, older years she concludes from the colored robes, are already on the move to the horseless carriages by the time she finished gazing at the Station. Looking around for other first year students she quickly find a few of them and hears a voice calling them over.
After a short walk she finds the source of the voice and listens to the short welcoming speech.
At first the wooden boats appear a bit intimidating for Eleanor as they are gently rocking on the waves.
After the first few students have already boarded the boats she looks around for where to go. One is already occupied by two boys. The other boat is rather full already and the last two are still empty. Since she wouldn’t want to take the chance to ride alone the boat with the two boys it is.
“I hope you wont mind if I sit with you two? I’m Eleanor Price, nice to meet you” she greets them with a smile.

Clare felt sick to her stomach. Her nerves from leaving her parents were setting in, and the new-ish reality of the Wizarding World was setting in. She spent the entirety of the Hogwarts Express journey shutting her eyes forcefully, hoping she'd drift into a dream where she was with her grandparents in Surrey or her mother and father in Kensington again.
Of course Clare was excited, but the nerves were getting in the way. She was thrilled to have powers and even more excited to go to the school her father once went to. She was not, however, thrilled to be wearing a plain black robe. The Sorting Ceremony couldn't come fast enough for Clare. Her father had been a Ravenclaw, but she had hoped she would get to make her own path.
After arriving at the boats, Clare decided to power past her nerves. She caught a glimpse of a boat with only one seat left. Inside, two boys and a girl. Clare smiled at the three nervously.
"Hello, I'm Clare Lowen," she managed to spit out before sitting on the wooden seat. "What are your names? And are you as nervous as me?"she laughed, pushing her hair behind her ear.

Lost in her own mind again after sitting down, gazing out onto the water and wondering about the coming sorting, Eleanor almost misses the new person entering the boat. It’s a petit girl with yellow-blonde hair that joins them. Oh she has nice hair, I wish mine where that blond and not boring brown. With that thought the brown-haired girl moves over a bit to make space for the newcomer.
With a smile Eleanor greets the girl, Clare Lowen she introduced herself as. “Hello, I’m Eleanor Price. It’s nice to meet you!” After a quick glance around the now full boat she continuous to answer the second question that was ask. “Yes I’m nervous as well. I have absolutely no idea in which hose I could belong” she stops for a short moment to think and then adds: “Well my brother was a Ravenclaw and he is cool so I would love to be one as well. He says I would fit in there because I like to read a lot. Or maybe I’m a Hufflepuff like my father. Oh I could ramble about that for hours, I’m sorry.” With that her flood of words stop and she looks a bit sheepish towards Clare, hopping that she hasn’t overwhelmed her right from the start.

Kaitlyn was scared and nervous as she disembarked from the train. Apparently, their belongings were going to be sent to their dorm rooms. Who was going to carry them? She didn’t notice anyone running onto the train for them. There had to be a lot of students, so it made absolutely no sense to her. And yet, she still had to listen. Everyone else was.
Katie heard the woman calling all of the first years. As such, the shy, awkward, timid, and quiet girl joined the other first-years near this woman and a bunch of boats. Her blue eyes grew to big saucers, as she saw the boats they were going to ride. Thoughts swirled in her mind. ‘I hope I don’t fall in … I hope I don’t fall in … I hope I don’t fall in.’ While she knew how to swim, she doubted it would be a pleasant experience.
As she heard their instructions, she looked over the other first-years. Katie hoped she wasn’t the only nervous one. And hopefully, she could eventually make friends. But, for right now, she was incredibly apprehensive. From their instructions, they were supposed to join other students in a boat. She frowned, as a lot of them raced to join the boats. She nervously approached a boat that was so far taken by two boys and one girl.
“I … um … H-Hi,” Katie stammered, her social anxiety on full display. “So-sorry … um … I-I ho-hop-hope yo-you do-don’t mi-mind if I-I jo-join” She asked, as she climbed into the remaining seat. She was visibly shaking now from her nervous.
