The Sorting ceremony 2017-2018
Elizabeth couldn't quite believe her eyes. Ideally, she would have liked to buy all her books early, do some research on the school, but her parents hadn't wanted to take her to London before they were completely sure that the whole thing wasn't some kind of joke. "Normal people don't just give birth to someone with magic! Magic isn't even real," her parents had protested. They were clearly very, very wrong.
In the end, the most she'd been able to do was a quick google search. It was hardly surprising that it didn't bring anything up considering the secrecy of the wizarding world. On the train here a couple of the older students, who had noticed her and how nervous she was, obligingly explained a few basic things. The four houses, the first year classes, some of teachers. Still, nothing could have prepared her for this.
The whole hall was lit by floating candles, the ceiling somehow made to look like the night sky. There were hundreds of students all sat at long tables, talking and laughing with each other. The whole place was, well, magical. Elizabeth found herself shuffling along with the other first years towards the front of the hall. After the headteacher had spoken, names started being called. This was something else that the other students had told her on the train, the hat spoke. If she hadn't been warned she likely would have been terrified at first.
After a while of watching and waiting, finally her name was called out. Weaving her way through the crowd of people she sat on the stool and had the hat placed on her head. It was really only here she started to wonder which house she would be in, something she quickly stopped herself from thinking about. This is a magical hat she scolded herself it knows far better than you where you belong in this new world.
After a few moments of deliberating, the hat loudly announced;
RAVENCLAW
A smile found its way onto Elizabeth's face as she walked down to the table of applauding students dressed in blue. Part of the hat's initial song rang in her head:
Or yet wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.
She smiled again. Ravenclaw. She could work with that.

When Maya's parents found out she was going to a magic school, they well, sent her away to live with her aunt. Maya's aunt, Elizabeth Kingston, was a witch. Maya was around 9 or so at that time. When she first got to Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat didn't surprise her like other students. Since her aunt told her all about it. Maya was super nervous though, her family had a reputation of Slytherin. She wanted to be in Slytherin so bad.
"Maya Kingston!" When Maya heard her name, she walked up to the hat, and placed it on her head.
"Why, another Kingston," the hat roared. "Bravery, ah, smart, hmmmm."
Please Slytherin, Please Slytherin, Please Slytherin, Please Slytherin! Maya thought.
"Slytherin, hmmm, NO! She belongs in RAVENCLAW!" it yelled.
Maya suddely felt queasy. She did not want to be in Ravenclaw. She went to sit down next to the other Ravenclaws.
The next day, Maya wrote to her aunt.
Dear Aunt Elizabeth,
Guess what. I'm in RAVENCLAW. Ravenclaw. I HATE it here! Please save me! I'll have you teach me! Please! I beg you.
Sincerly,
Maya Kingston
This year was going to be swell. Just swell. Maya hopfully would find some way to sneak into Slytherin.

The Great Hall definitely hadn't missed Sabrina's expectations. The candles that were magically floating in the air, the ceiling that appeared to be the night sky, the moving pictures that lined the walls. The amount of people in the room had almost been overwhelming to the red-headed girl, but in the more exciting way rather than giving her nerves. She was excited that she was able to start the year - make friends, and learn how to use magic. She was still amazed at the fact that she actually had a wand in her pocket right now. She kept her hand in the pocket of her plain black work robe most times, as in means to find a way to reassure herself this wasn't another dream.
Sabrina wasn't the first of her family to attend Hogwarts. Her mother and father happened to attend the school prior to her as well, and her father even works at the school still, as Keeper of the Grounds, or something like that. She had left her mother at home in Cotswolds, England. The journey to Scotland was a long one, as the journey back to England would probably be as well. She snapped out of her thoughts as she heard her name being called.
"Sabrina Hurst!" The professor called out, and Sabrina hesitantly departed from the crowd. This was where her nerves were setting in slightly - she knew more eyes would be on her up here than there were while she was in the crowd. She made her way to the stool where she would have to sit to have the Sorting Hat placed upon her head, and closed her eyes once she did, waiting for the Hat to be placed on her. When it was, there felt like there was a much larger weight on her than just the hat. That would most likely just be the weight of her own thoughts, though.
"Hmm, another Hurst? I've had a few of you.." The Sorting Hat trailed off, causing Sabrina to perk an eyebrow up. Did it think that she was not aware of the past generations of her family's attendance to the same school as her? "But you are also a Rey - making it a good consideration to put you in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.." It mumbled, going into a silent state for a few moments. She wasn't exactly worried - she hadn't heard of anyone not getting sorted before. It wasn't a doubt that she would be. Patience was key here - she was sure of it.
"GRYFFINDOR!" The Sorting Hat bellowed, the announcement filling up the room. There were cheers and claps from her table, mostly, and a small grin spread across her face. Maybe it was worth the slight embarrassment of having to sit on a stool in the front of the Great Hall? Well, it wasn't like her sorting was anything close to memorable anyways. Thankfully enough. The red-haired girl slid off of the stool, and started to make her way to her table.

Serena looked up at the sorting hat, listening to his speech, when he mentioned that you might belong in Gryffindor her eyes seemed to shimmer for a moment. Her older sister is in Ravenclaw but she is pretty sure that she wont be a Ravenclaw. The Ravenclaws might be smart and creative and she is talented at drawing pictures but she would feel uncomfortable in that house because she would be putting to much pressure on herself if she fails at something and isnt as smart as the other Ravenclaws. Hufflepuff? She is kind and loyal but she doesnt likes to talk with to many people. Slytherin might work...but the girl wanted to be in Gryffindor. Not only because red is her favorit color, but to proove that she is brave and that she can get stronger and more confident in herself. She woke up from her daydream noticing that most of the new students have already joined their house. She started to feel nervous What if I do end up in Ravenclaw and dont even manage to solve the riddle to enter the common room?. "Serena Song" The young witch twitched when she heard the teacher saying her name but after taking a deep breath she walked up to the chair and sat down, a heavy feeling on her head telling her that the sorting hat was on her head. OOOH the younger sister of the Ravenclaw girl? Lets see ...you have potential to join that house.... the sorting head whisperd in to the girls ear. Hufflepuff, Slytherin or Gryffindor but please not Ravenclaw... Im not smart enough for them I want to get stronger and get more confident "Courage means, to be scared but to do it anyway!" Im ready ...tell me your decision the girl thought to herself, knowing that the sorting hat can hear it. "Courage means to be scared but to do it anyways ?" ....alright the sorting hat whisperd to her Then you shall be a ..."GRYFFINDOR!!!" the sorting hat shouted the last word in to the hall and the Gryffindors cheered. A big smile appeard on Serenas face when she stood up and walked to her classmates.....

Sefton Jaswinder Ailbrooke had never been in a place so large in size and full of life. He had never had the experience of witnessing such beauty and magic, ever!
Now that he was here, it was hard to take in. His fellow first years on the train had discussed what Hogwarts; School of Witchcraft and Wizardry would look like. They rambled on about the classes, what they’d seen in books, and what their parents had told them. Sefton had already been amazed at how wonderful it sounded, but seeing it before his own eyes? Well...
It was magical.

Well...
It was magical.
But that wonder and amazement had been washed away when he listened to what Professor Anderson had to say. Going in front of this much people-all of them seeming like they came from wizarding families-and having your personality, secrets, and practically your entire life viewed by a talking hat? The only thing that stopped Sefton from walking out right there was the fact that he was squished in between several other first years. This only served to make him even more anxious due to his Claustrophobia.
Sefton desperately wanted this over with. But at the same time, he didn’t want it to happen at all. As each new student was called to the front, he got even more nervous and anxious. It took all he had in him to keep himself still and not fidget to release some stress. For him, the longer it took, the more his fear took over his mind.
Then, it happened.
“Ailbrooke, Sefton!” Sefton flinched as his name was called.
The ash-haired boy walked up to the front, hiding his shaking hands in his pockets. He sat down on the stool, and felt the hat gently touch his head.
“Ah, a Muggleborn!” The hat proclaimed. “Those are always fun. Bet it was a shocker for you when your figured out you were a wizard! Let’s see...a daring and adventurous spirit. You find fun in dangerous activities-for entertainment, but also for experience and knowledge! A very bright mind you have, rather quick-witted. You yearn for knowledge. Yet you are also brave, very brave. You stand up for the mistreated ones, and your beliefs and decisions are never wavered by the insults of enemies.”
Sefton was feeling uncomfortable and scared. He knew the color in his fair skin had drained to a pale white just by feeling the emptiness in himself. This thing knew everything about him!
“I believe I have come to my conclusion. We’ll put you in....RAVENCLAW!”
Sefton let out a hard huff of relief, and then meekly smiled as roars of approval and acceptance rang through the hall from the Ravenclaw table. He hopped off of the stool and joined his new house.
Maybe this place wouldn’t be too bad after all.

Having been home-schooled by his mother, this was the first time that Lucas was in an actual school. It was certainly a new and scary experience for him, but that was all pushed to the back of his mind as he took in how beautiful the Great Hall was. It made him forget that around him were hundreds of people, students and faculty alike, each of them sorted into a House that suits them best, and in a few minutes Lucas will follow in their footsteps.
Lost in his thoughts, he almost bumped into another first year when the group stopped right in front of a Professor, who then started to speak about the four Houses. It was like he was listening to his father, he had heard him tell the same speech over and over again, especially after he had gotten his Hogwarts acceptance letter. What he wasn't told and what caught him off guard was when the Hat started to sing a song. He waited patiently until it was finished and the calling of names began, only interested in that of his own.
"Baker, Lucas!"
Taking in a deep breath, Lucas slowly made his way to the stool and once he sat down on it the hat was placed over his head. This is it, Lucas thought to himself as he let the sensation wash over him. Now it's my turn to be placed where I best belong. I hope the Sorting Hat knows what it's doing. A loud voice inside of his mind made the boy jump. Ah... yes, another Baker. I can see that you and your father have a lot in common. You're ambitious, determined and can be cunning when you need to be. Being a Slytherin like him would definitely suit you. Lucas stared at the faces that were looking back at him and held his breath as he lat the Hat continue. Ravenclaw and Gryffindor are not the Houses where you belong and even though you would do well in Slytherin like your father, you are a kind and tolerant soul and you value loyalty, hard work and dedication more than anything. Yes, I know exactly where to put you... You belong in...

Caleb watched the number of waiting eleven year olds dwindle as each were called by the Hat and sorted. Restless, he drummed his fingers and tapped his feet as he waited impatiently, listening to cries of "GRYFFINDOR", "SLYTHERIN", "HUFFLEPUFF" and "RAVENCLAW" come from the Sorting Hat. He was so excited, this was everything he had ever wanted. No longer would he have to make do with half remembered lessons from his dad, he would be learn magic from the best teachers in the country, at the best school in the country. He... actually felt a little bit dizzy.
He gave his head a quick shake, returning his focus to the Sorting Ceremony. The four houses... where would the Hat place him? His dad would be happy if he was a Hufflepuff like him, and while they seemed like nice people from what he'd been told, he knew he didn't belong. Ravenclaw... he knew that's where the Sorting Hat would place him. His dad had told it's was a house full of the intelligent and studious, there Caleb would be able to learn every piece of magic he could.
"CALEB KENDRICK"
Caleb had been ready, the moment the Hat called his name he was striding down the hall towards it. He sat down on the stool and the Sorting Hat was placed on his head...
"Ah, another Kendrick. Still, I see that you're different, Hufflepuff would not suit you like it did your father. No, you've a drive he never possessed, and you hold magic in a far higher regard. In you is a desire to learn all you can, to uncover all of magic's mysteries. You could do well in Ravenclaw, very well in fact. But I also see in you ambition, you do not wish to learn for learning's sake. You've a great will, determination and cunning, I see you belong in... SLYTHERIN!"
Caleb frowned slightly, but quickly pushed it away. It may not have been what he expected, but the Sorting Hat was always right. And now...
"I'm a Hogwarts student," he whispered to himself.
With a smile on his face, he hurried off to the Slytherin table.

Layla had just rowed some ancient looking boat and was not in the mood for celebrating. She lazily sat down, not even noticing the candles floating above her head. But she did notice the sky, having dreamt about the galaxies that spun around Hogwarts.
Layla Arellano just sat and waited impatiently, the voices of others fading into the background. “Arellano, Layla” said a person. She was suddenly jolted back to reality (and not her usual thoughts-normally Stars or galaxies) and walked up to the hat.
Suddenly, she felt nervous but knew that probably everyone that was callled up was. Sitting on a brown wooden stool, she felt the famous hat be placed on her head. She didn’t really listen to it but caught glimpses such as
‘Hufflepuff would be better suited to you’
and
‘You are hardworking in your stufies’
‘RAVENCLAW!’ The hat bellowed.
Layla stood up, excited, yet questioning. Was this really the best house for her? She sure hoped so. Everyone was muttering about how great the hat’s song was, as Layla wondered if the hat just thought about next year’s song while she was out playing with her ‘friends’ (not that she had any yet). But that would be later, she hoped.

Victoria sat in her seat watching as many a student were sorted into their houses, never before had the letter 'S' seemed so late in the alphabet. Honestly, she was nervous. She began playing with the edge of the tablecloth just to keep her hands busy while her mind ran rampant and her eyes remained glued to the shriveled-looking old hat. I know mum was Hufflepuff and dad was a Slytherin, I don't know where else I'd fit in. She shook her head slightly trying to organize her thoughts and took a deep breath to calm herself down.
There's no reason to be so out of sorts, whatever the old hat declares is simply what will be. She smiled inwardly at her that thought, gaining some comfort before her mind ran through her potential future homes once again: Gryffindor for the brave and daring, she nearly snorted, I highly doubt I would end up there. Slytherin for the cunning and ambitious... that certainly sounds like a place to succeed and that is exactly what dad did while he was a Slytherin. But I've heard they can be so cruel, I truly hope that's not true. She frowned a little before her thoughts carried on, mum always seemed so happy with Hufflepuff, a place for the just and loyal, it does sound like a pleasant community to be a part of... Though I would look absolutely horrid in yellow, she chuckled a bit to herself drawing the attention of the boy siting next to her. She just smiled at him before returning her gaze to the sorting hat. Ravenclaw, for the learners, seems a bit dry. What do they plan to do with all that learning? Though I bet that house turns out many students at the top of their class...
"...Sutton," Victoria's attention was caught when she heard her last name, apparently she hadn't been paying enough attention to catch them call a forename. She rose from her seat and quickly made her way to the wooden chair where she would be sorted, every moment praying that there were no other students that shared her surname. She sat in the chair and had the hat placed on her head with practiced ease.
"A Sutton, huh?" the hat began, "I remember sorting your father, he was quite different from the rest of his family, and quite the challenge. I nearly put him in Ravenclaw, oh what a mistake that would have been! Just as it would be for you, despite your desire to learn." She closed her eyes, listening carefully to the hat's every remark, "I can see your mother's kindness in your heart, yet the decision is clear as day." She opened her eyes just in time to hear the hat shout, "SLYTHERIN!"
Victoria smiled, she hadn't even realized that was the answer she was hoping for. She mumbled a quick thank you to the old hat as it was removed from her head and rose to join her new housemates, optimistic that the rumors of evil and cruelty were just that, rumors.
I'm going to look so good in green.

The Sorting ceremony 2017-2018
"Well this is fun." The slouching wizard muttered sarcastically as he cast mismatched eyes around the hall before rising up to rest on the sorting hat currently on the head of a fellow first year.
As interesting as the hat was, Griffin found his attention slipping from the entire ceremony. Honestly speaking he was nervous, not that he'd admit it though. His entire family, going back quite a number of generations had been sorted to either Slytherin or Ravenclaw, and he felt as though he had to keep this going or he'd be disowned. Not that that would happen...right?
His thoughts return to the Great Hall, but not back to the sorting, rather to the denizens that occupied it. Did they really care about who was sorted into which house? Save for the occasional sibling that is.
His mind would continue to wander while the group of first years grew smaller around him, making his hands twitch ever so slightly. He usually would crack his knuckles at this point, but he felt that wouldn't be appropriate right now.
Anyways, it wouldn't be long until he caught his name being called out. Slipping from the ever reducing cover of the first years, Griffin made his way to sit on the stool that would present him to the rest of Hogwarts. A sharp breath would slip from Griffin as he felt the hat descend onto his head. Much like he always did when felt exposed, Griffin would tune out what the hat was saying, hearing only mumblings and feeling the occasional movements of the enchanted object.
A few moments pass before he was bellowed into Ravenclaw, where a small smile can't help but tug at the corner of his mouth as he briskly walked to the table currently cheering. Careful not to sit too closely to anyone else, he takes one last look around the hall before focusing on the sorting hat once more.

Will we die just a little?
