EmmaLee perused the isles of the Library, running a pale finger along the spines idly as she walked. She wasn't looking for anything in particular, just something to distract her from his whirling thoughts about summer. The students had arrived to school yesterday, a Friday, which meant she had a whole weekend to spend before classes would start. Normally, this would be great and she would be enjoying it just as well as any of the other students around her, but right now, this meant she had a whole weekend to spend thinking, rather than distracting herself with coursework. She twirled a snow white pigtail around her other hand as she rounded the shelf, no longer reading any of the titles, just letting her thoughts drift off on the quiet hum of the library noise: quiet feet shuffling through the isles of books, the sounds of flipping pages at different reading speeds, murmured conversations that were definitely not about studying.
It wasn't that she had had a bad summer, on the contrary, it had be absolutely wonderful in so many ways, but the events of the summer had given her far to much to think about... to... feel about. So many feelings that she had never felt before as therefore did not understand in the slightest.
Feelings about Kiernan, for one.
Had he always been this immature? This childish? This rude? It seemed that in the year or so since she had last physically seen him, he had gone from her adventurous, lion-hearted, childhood best friend to a whiney little brother. He had somehow grown into a hairy, green-eyed monster in almost every aspect and had spent the vast majority of their time together complaining. He was upset that he hadn't made any of the Ilvermorny sports teams, upset the EmmaLee had made new friends (she kind of had to given the fact that she had moved entire schools), upset that she had specifically made Ilvermorny friends while she was at Hogwarts. It seemed that any random thing would set him off his a grumpy, stompy fit. The only time he had been remotely pleasant to be around was when they were hanging out in New York with Alura and Grace, just like old times. It was like he was furious that anything had to change and EmmaLee didn't know what to do with all of it. When had he become so angry all the time?
Then there were the feelings about Stephen.
At this point in time, he was Kiernan's complete opposite, but she had really thought that they would have been friends, or at least friendly. She had thought they were so alike, but Kiernan wouldn't have it. They both were kind, intelligent, funny, adventurous, when Kiernan wasn't acting like a jealous, spoiled child. They both liked sports and were athletic enough to actually participate in them, especially broom racing. Last summer, Kiernan wouldn't stop talking about how excited he was to try and join the broom racing team, now he was angry that anyone but him was on it. Both of them were fun to hang out with and talk to, but while she had had many other male friends besides Kiernan and Stephen, Stephen was somehow... more... in her mind. He seemed... bigger... somehow. She didn't want to say more important, but... yeah? Maybe? She felt bad for thinking that Stephen could be more important than any of her friends.
It just didn't feel like the right word, but he was...clearly... more... something than her other friends. She was more excited to see him, more eager to talk to him - know about him, more excited at the thought of seeing his face, hearing him talk - his laugh - his jokes. His voice and the color of his eyes sent butterflies to her stomach every time she thought about him. She cared more about what he thought of her. What he thought of her hair and her face and her clothes and her own interests. She cared more about whether he liked the same things as her or not. She just overall felt more about him than she ever had about anyone before and the confusion of it all was frankly driving her mad.
As she let her mind be completely overrun with these puzzles, the library became static and she began to not only not pay attention to the books she was supposed to be looking at and choosing one, but she also paid less and less attention to where she was going as she idly wandered the isles of books.

Ebony put on the hood of her cloak. It was slightly obscuring her vision, but she didn't mind. She just let herself get lost in her thoughts and her imaginary world. A world where she could let out her emotions freely, cry all she wanted, yell all she wanted, smile all she wanted. Of course, the ideal world just doesn't exist.
Strolling through the aisles, she kept her vision at her feet -- not that she could look anywhere else, with the hood on. She was bound to bump into somebody soon, but she didn't care. She could probably face their wrath and whatever they threw at her.
Her worries were not whether she would bump into someone, or whether she had finished her homework or not. Her thoughts were, in fact, not even in the present. They had moved back in time, back into the past. Ebony found it extremely hard not to dwell on the past -- her past actions, people from the past, her past emotions, past troubles... everything. Just everything. She was quite the over-thinker, too.
She found her thoughts wandering to her parents and how she hadn't seen them for a long time, and then to her neighbours, who had mocked her and bullied her. She was glad that she was at Hogwarts now, and that she was no longer lonely and alone in her troubles. She actually had friends to go to for comfort, and most of all, fun, which she didn't have much of as a child.
Almost forgetting that she was in the Library, Ebony snapped back into the present and came to an abrupt stop, questioning why she was walking in circles around the place. What was her reason for coming here in the first place? The library was a comfort place, but she didn't come here just to ponder on her life decisions. Oh, right. She wanted to read a Charms book for the homework. She grabbed one off the shelf and proceeded to head towards a table.

The Hufflepuff had no idea how long she had been wandering the isles, ruminating on her dilemma and getting no closer to sorting out her feelings. It might have been thirty minutes, it might have been hours. She wished that she had someone to talk to about them. She knew a couple of people here at Hogwarts she probably could ask about it, but she didn't want to bother any of them, especially the older students. They were probably far too busy to deal with her petty second year social problems. It would be nice if her Maman was here right now. She seemed to always have the right answer, or at least the write words to make anyone feel better about their situation.
EmmaLee frowned and sighed deeply as she turned around the edge of the Charms section and promptly crashed into another person. The pale girl squeaked in surprise and fell backward, landing on her rear with an unladylike "oof" at the same time the person she ran into toppled as well. The girl's book hopped out of her grasp and skidded to a stop into EmmaLee's foot.
"Ah! D-Désole! ... I-I mean, I'm very sorry." She said, scooping up the book, scrambling to her feet, and offering her hand to help the other girl up. "Are you 'armed?" She asked fretfully. "I wasn't watching where I was going and didn't see you."

Just as she turned towards a table with the book in her hand, something crashed into her side with such a force that her book slid out of her grasp. Ebony toppled over and fell onto the hard floor with a thump at the same time as a girl with pale hair landed on her bottom beside her. Her dark hair spread out from behind her like snakes as a pain shot across her back.
She pushed herself up with difficulty, her body conveniently being void of energy at the moment. It's been a long day, and she had to admit she was tired. She didn't notice the fact that the girl who had knocked her down had offered to help her up.
"What are you doing?" she snapped moodily, still engulfed in tiredness after having pushed herself up. She bent down to pick up her Charms book from beside the girl's foot. The girl said something in another language that Ebony didn't understand, and then apologised. She spoke in a light accent that sounded secretly pleasant to her ears -- but Ebony was not about to let the girl know that. She just pushed her over, for god's sake! She was going to be angry. Mean. She's not going to get pushed over and then just act like nothing happened. No, that was not Ebony. She is not nice to people who hurt her. A small voice at the back of her head told her it was an accident, but she pushed it away. Still, she told herself, she pushed you over! Somehow, sometime, the "knocked over" had automatically been converted to "pushed over". "Pushed over" sounded a lot worse. It sounded deliberate.
"How did you not notice I was here?" she exclaimed, starting off with a bit of a manic voice, but then remembering she was in the library and then lowering her volume.

EmmaLee jumped in surprise and brought her offered hand back to her chest protectively as the girl snapped at her and stood up on her own.
"I... ah... I'm sorry. I was thinking too 'ard and not watching where I was going." She stammered sheepishly. She was a little disoriented at being struck out of her deep thought process and abruptly thrust into this conflict. Why was her life so filled with conflict lately? First Kiernan, now this girl right as school started. "I... I really didn't mean to 'urt you. Are you 'urt?" EmmaLee fretted, moving around the girl to inspect her thoroughly, still clasping her pale hands protectively against her chest as she circled the girl like a mother hen. The girl was very pretty, with dark hair and skin, and older than EmmaLee. Taller as well. Granted, most people were taller than her except some of the new first years.
The girl looked relatively unharmed, but that didn't mean she was so. She was definitely angry enough to be harmed. "We could go to the 'ospital wing if you need to. I'm very sorry." EmmaLee continued to fret over the girl. She really didn't want to be having a fight with this girl, not in the library, not today when her emotions and thoughts were all swirly and confusing.

Ebony flinched away as the girl circled her. As her gaze trailed to follow the tiny girl, she realised that they were polar opposites. She had light hair and pale skin, while Ebony had a darker, tanned complexion and even darker hair. She was short, Ebony was tall. The Hufflepuff girl looked like she was the type of person to smile in every instance, no matter what was happening -- the light smattering of freckles on her cheeks added to the impression. The girl's hands were held tightly against her chest delicately. Ebony could never.
The girl proceeded to apologise -- again. Was once not enough? Ebony suddenly felt a pang of jealously course through her. How could she still be so nice, so apologetic, so calm? How was she not already moody and annoyed? She looked into the girl's cute face, looking all too worried.
Ebony sighed and rubbed her slightly aching sides. Her personality was the opposite. The slightest spark lit her fire, and she was prone to mood swings. It was as if someone else was taking over the wheel whenever she got the slightest bit annoyed. She didn't know how to control herself. She had dreamed of having a personality like this girl. She had dreamed of not being trampled over by her rollercoaster of unpredictable emotions -- and she ached for it. But of course, she wasn't like this. She was the uncontrollable, moody teenager that she always was -- and she proceeded to make things worse for herself.
Ebony shook her head and scoffed, "Why would I need to go to the hospital wing? I'm not tiny and fragile like you." Her eyes widened when she realised she was making fun of the girl's size. I'm really turning into the bad guy here, she thought to her head inwardly, I should just stop and apologise and be on my way. But the brief decent thought was overridden by a wave of annoyance, jealousy, frustration, a wave of all those horrible feelings jumbled up together -- and she was directing it toward the poor girl.

As EmmaLee finished her investigative circle, she stood in front of the girl again, lengthening her arms in front of her, hands still clasped, and smiled just a little, glad that the other girl was at the very least unhurt. She startled a little as the girl continued in her bad mood and annoyance flashed across her freckled face for a split second before she was able to even it out once more. What was this girl's problem?
EmmaLee sighed internally, but managed to keep it inside. If this girl wanted to make a whole cheese out of it, so be it but at this point, it wasn't EmmaLee problem any more. She'd apologized, the girl was unhurt, if not uncomfortable, and this girl was still angry, even almost insulting. EmmaLee took a breath and tried to cool the temper she knew would be rising soon.
"Ah, well, I suppose since you are uninjured," She said delicately, as if trying to placate a tiger ready to pounce on her, "and you seem to be wholly uninterested in any company, I'll just get out of your way then." She finished, tucking one foot behind the other and dipping into a curtsy and turning to, finally, walk away from this entire... weirdly confrontational... situation.
