Morning Musings
Mara picked at her poached eggs, the yoke trickling down her fork as she absentmindedly flipped through the pages of her Magical Theory textbook. She had already read the first couple of chapters the night before, desperate to distract herself from the rising tide of homesickness. Taking a careful bite of her drippy eggs (Mara sincerely hoped no one was watching her butcher her breakfast in such an ungainly manner), she used one finger to fold down the corner of a page that held a passage that sparked her interest:
Tamper with the deepest mysteries - the source of life, the essence of self - only if prepared for consequences of the most extreme and dangerous kind.
Mara scoffed. The deepest mysteries, eh? She rolled her eyes up at the thundering sky that billowed across the ceiling of the Great Hall. It’s called science, dopes! She resolved to send a letter – well, another letter – to her fathers to discuss how narrow minded these wizards and witches were. Aidan, a wizard himself, would almost certainly agree with her, while Ben, a Muggle scientist, would encourage her to seek out some answers for herself. Unbidden, tears sprang to her eyes. It had been almost a week since she waved goodbye to them at King’s Cross Station, and a week was the longest she had ever spent away from home…
She knew what her dads would say: Go outside! Make some friends! And while Mara desperately wanted to try out Quidditch, she knew that friends would only serve as a distraction. Sure, she enjoyed companionship here and there, but she was mostly just impatient to start her studies. That’s all she was really here for, anyway.
Mara’s stomach grumbled as she scraped her plate clean. Casting about for something else to eat, she skipped over the tray of fish (despite growing up by the sea, Mara abhorred the scaly creatures) and settled her gaze on the steaming pile of breakfast rolls located in front of a blue-eyed girl with wavy brown hair.
She grimaced. There was absolutely no way to reach for a roll without rudely throwing herself across the table. Conversation it is, then.
“Excuse me?” Mara said. Her voice was rather hoarse from disuse. “Do you mind if I...Could you pass me one of those rolls, please?”
Embarrassingly, her stomach growled once again.

Morning Musings
Ruby had finished analyzing the people who were already at the table, and had already observed what they were doing. She had even moved onto a few people from other houses, but they were harder to see from here. She contented herself with just paying attention to the Slytherins – well, for the most part, anyway. Analyzing people was fun. It could tell you a lot about them and was really quite easy to do after having enough practice and knowing what to look for. The information gathered from that could then come in handy later, or when trying to talk to them (for example, if someone seemed a little off or different to normal, then she should be careful around them). Besides, Ruby cherished new information and any form of knowledge.
As she did all this, she ate, still being mindful of her surroundings as she did so. Conversations were in progress all around her, but she wasn't particularly in the mood to eavesdrop right now. Rather than the talkative people, she was currently interested in one of the quiet ones – a girl reading a book. A fellow bookworm? Possibly. Ruby couldn't see what this book was from here, so she didn't know what kind it was or whether she had read it before. As much as Ruby was tempted to start a conversation, she knew not to blatantly interrupt someone who was reading. She went back to eating, observing the way the colors of her food looked together and noticing the smells and texture of it. At the moment, she was simply existing at peace, aware of what was around her and convinced that she had analyzed most of what she could.
That was why she had brought a book – in case she finished getting most of the information from this room. There was not much else she could do, so she flipped the book open on her lap and continued eating. She had just turned the final page to get to where she had left off when she heard a voice that hadn't previously been involved in a conversation. Her gaze shifted upwards until she located the source of it – the girl who had been reading before. The girl's voice was a bit hoarse, which Ruby understood from too many instances of being silent for a long time while reading (or whatever thing she had been doing) and then trying to use her voice again immediately after.
The girl's question was simple. She just wanted a roll. “Of course,” Ruby replied with a kind smile. She had had a couple of them already, and she knew that they were rather good, in her opinion, so she carefully pushed the whole thing nearer to the girl. From here, her fellow Slytherin would be able to easily reach them.

Hey! I'm super sorry that this was so late. I've been caught up with things in real life and hope you can understand. I'll try and be better about replying in the future.

Morning Musings
Mara found herself smiling back at the girl who passed her the bread basket. She had a kind smile, unlike so many other of her peers. At lunch yesterday, Mara had counted a whole clique of girls who always seemed to be jeering at someone’s face or behind their back, and Mara honestly had no idea which one was worse. But this girl seemed… approachable.
Even so, Mara still didn’t feel totally comfortable spontaneously starting a conversation with someone. Back home, she never really made much time for socializing; the precious few friends she called her own she made through after school clubs or her local football league. Those friendships were so effortless because they had common interests and goals. But at Hogwarts, Mara didn’t even know where to start. Most students seemed to accept their new reality without any qualms whatsoever, but Mara was still trying to wrap her head around the existence of Diagon Alley, let alone goblins, dragons, hyper-intelligent owls, and flying broomsticks!
Mara looked at the roll in her hand and sighed. This, at least, was something she understood. (Unless she found out tomorrow that there were little fairies downstairs cooking all their meals or something…) She bit into the warm, soft bread and nearly moaned aloud with delight. Some things can’t be ruined by magic!
“Mmm! Thank…” Mara began to express her gratitude towards the other Slytherin girl, but her head was angled downwards towards something in her lap. Another smile tugged at Mara’s lips. This girl must have brought some reading material to breakfast as well. A student after my own heart!
Suddenly curious, Mara leaned over towards the other girl. “What are you reading?” she asked, trying to get an eyeful of the book in the girl’s lap. “Not something rubbish like this nonsense, I hope!” Mara lifted her Magical Theory textbook and rolled her eyes.
