2023/24, Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor: Match 5

Jake held up his arm away from himself and cast Lumos Maxima - a spell that was bound to make the Gryffindors squint. He had practiced this one, trying to get the light as bright as possible.

On the one hand, it meant that some of his opponents would have an even harder time finding him and his team-mates through the fog and might make their spells miss.

On the other hand, it meant he had no chance of accidentally throwing another spell at his team-mates. That was good too.

It worked well enough, but Jake felt bad as the youngest member of the duel, Aries, got bombarded with spells from his team. It had to be hard facing older opponents who had been doing this for longer, and learning spells for years. He just hoped the hospital wing would be on it quickly. It was what came from duelling, and Jake had tried to get used to it, but he never quite did.

Whatever excitement there was from the previous exchange of spells was amped up to the extreme this round. Never before had Cassius witnessed so many perfectly cast spells in a single place. The conjunctivitis curse cast by Lucia? Perfect. The blasting curse cast by Lea? Perfect. The split wind jinx from Jake? Perfect. The spreading knockback jinx from Elsa? Perfect.

As a spectator it was a joy to behold, the exchange playing out like a duelling match one might see amongst professional adults.

That said, it was likely less a joy to behold for the Gryffindors as Kim was on the receiving end of not only an opponent's perfectly cast blasting curse, but also a perfect knockback jinx from his teammate. What was that about? Between the blinding light and the fog he supposed it was possible to accidentally target his teammate, but he was not quite sure. Regardless, the knockback jinx knocked him to the ground and he did not get back up.

“Pause,” the Ravenclaw said with an even tone and raised hand. A brief moment was allowed for Kim to be retrieved from the duelling stage and brought to the healers. “Resume.”

Elsa was now the lone Gryffindor facing down a pack of badgers. A difficult spot but not an impossible one. The match goes on.

2023/24, Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor: Match 5
The couple of seconds that followed were perhaps the most exciting of any duel Lucia had ever participated in.

Lucia tried out a spell she'd only learnt recently, and when it launched from her wand absolutely perfect, joy illuminated her features just as clearly as the blinding light Jake had previously produced. Her face only fell when her opponent dodged so completely it was as if she'd known it was coming.

Meanwhile, Jake's cast of the wind jinx was so excellent that the spell split itself into two jets, a phenomenon that was rare, though not unheard of. It was a shame that both missed their mark - clearly, the Gryffindors' evasion skills were well-matched with the incredible spellwork of the Hufflepuffs.

The only spell from a Hufflepuff that hit was from Lea: an impeccable blasting curse that must have hurt Kim dreadfully. The Gryffindor himself aimed a knockback jinx at his attacker, but Lucia was pleased to see Lea easily avoid the spell.

The lions clearly favoured Flipendo, as the older girl also sent two instances of the jinx hurtling towards Jake and... Kim? Lucia watched with wide eyes as possibly the most perfect cast of this spell she'd ever seen hit the boy squarely in the chest, sending him hurtling backwards. When Kim hit the ground with a thud, Lucia was suddenly certain that he would not get back up, and was proved correct when the referee paused the match to get him to the hospital wing.

What could have made the lone Gryffindor standing across from Lucia and her co-captains aim at her own teammate? It might have been an accident - it had happened to everyone, a spell going awry and hitting the wrong target - and the girl surely hadn't meant to do it, but it didn't seem to have been entirely accidental. There must have been some aiming involved for the spell to hit as well as it had done. And was it Lucia's imagination, or had the brunnette's wand been centred on her for just a moment before she'd redirected her attack? This wasn't the only time something like this had happened, either. Lucia wondered if this was in some way related to her Veela ancestry - it probably was; everything weird about Lucia was related to her Veela ancestry - but when the game was resumed Lucia forced herself to return her full attention to it. She couldn't be thinking about other things when she had a duel to win.

It was Round 6.

Lucia decided to cast Oculitumescere at his teammate but Elsa managed to dodge it perfectly on her part.

On the other hand, Kim focused his favorite spell on Lea. But although the blue bolt shot out of his wand, Lea managed to avoid being hit by it due to Kim's inability to 100% focus. At the same time, Jake tried casting Ventus but failed to hit them both. It seemed as if Jake was having just as much trouble on his own as the Lions. But Lea was doing well this time. The girl cast Confringo again but this time directed at him. Kim saw it come towards him a few seconds before it reached him and was unable to react in time to avoid it.

The floor exploded at his feet and he went flying backward, only managing to catch his balance at the last second. As he tried to steady himself, a rather unexpected blow caught him right in the solar plex. Elsa's Knockback Jinx, which had veered off course and headed straight towards him. It knocked the breath out of him and for a moment he couldn't breathe. Until he blissfully crumpled and the world became black before his eyes. Ah, hopefully he would never wake up again... Maybe now he'd be able to see Puffie one more time.

He almost wanted to ask the healers not to heal him.

But he knew there would have been no point to doing so, even if he could make them understand.

They were healers. Their whole purpose was to heal and make people feel better. Kim's thoughts spiraled and finally he sank into a deep, troubled sleep, the painful expression on his face slowly easing into smoothness. Would he dream of beautiful things? Or would he dream of nightmares? Or would he actually be transported to the realm of the spirits? Most likely, he would be just fine as soon as the healers took care of him. But for now, Kim was content to not think about anything or anyone. He had finally managed to rest.

His tired body thanked him.

Nicky watched Kim drop down and sighed. Two down, one against three. The odds didn't look very promising. But she was a Gryffindor and had to keep fighting for her house. She could still do this. She was a badass. She didn't need her team to win. Haha. She was going to rock and RAWR.

On to the next shadowy figure she could see. It seemed as though she had chosen a spell to keep with after properly figuring it out since the previous rounds. This time would be no different, hoping to inflict as much damage as quickly as possible to keep their advantage. Nebulus certainly wasn't helping, but she'd keep her wand on where the target presumably was, holding onto the spell a little longer before letting go and throwing it across the block. Lea wasn't sure if the pause was because of her spell or another, but the fog would dissipate as the pause ended. Finally- one opponent and her eyesight back.

Jake breathed a sigh of relief as his wind jinx not only went towards their OPPONENTS this time, but even split towards them both! Jake still couldn't control WHEN that happened, it was always just sort of a nice surprise. Sure, through the fog he was pretty sure both the spells missed, but missing his opponents was technically much closer than missing his partners.

Still, Jake felt a pang of guilt when he realized that yet another of their opponents had been bombarded (though it was the strangest thing: Had one of those spells come from the GRYFFINDOR side? It was hard to see through the fog). Why did winning sometimes feel even worse than losing? It was now three on one. Insurmountable odds for their opponent...It always made Jake feel a bit of a bully, even though he'd been the one in that situation before, as the only person on his team facing down the other, and it certainly hadn't felt good either. But Nicky was a Gryffindor, so he had a feeling she wouldn't give up. If she wasn't going to, she wouldn't want Jake to stop either, right? He tried to convince himself of that at least....but he knew he shouldn't underestimate her either. It was never too late for a comeback. He silently wished her luck.

Though reduced to one, it was evident that the lions were not without claws. Of course, Cassius did not expect the lone Gryffindor to lay down their wand and surrender, but the tactic she had used surprised him and brought the slightest hint of a smile to his lips. If you could not knock them all down, at least make them uncomfortable and the curse of the bogies would do just that.

Even from his position at the side of the stage, Cassius could see the mucus begin to leak from Lucia's nose. Surely there would be nausea and sneezing soon to come as well. A look of disgust on his face, the Ravenclaw moderator took a few steps back to remain out of projectile range. The same could not be said for her teammates.

That said, all was not well for the lone Gryffindor as she managed to dodge out of the way of one knockback jinx, but was soon after struck by another and a nasty blasting curse. She was definitely not out but damn did it look like it hurt. Cassius winced in commiseration.

2023/24, Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor: Match 5
They were doing well. Removing the cloudiness had certainly helped both Jake and herself as their spells connected with the last standing Gryffindor. Confringo had been working rather well, an explosive amount of damage that had helped fall the other two as well. It was a bit strange to cast still, a reminder that it was a higher level spell that even her teammates had yet to comfortably grasp it seemed, but it gave her a sense of satisfaction too that it had been working so well so far.

After already splitting her spell the round before, Lea hadn't expected Elsa to go at it again- and it seemed like Lucia hadn't either. It was more of a stumble or backpedal out of the way rather than a flowing dodge, but it put enough space between the Hufflepuff and the spell so as to not get hit. Lucia wasn't so lucky, clearly starting to feel the effects of the spell. Lea winced, a bit out of pity, a bit out of disgust, before turning her attention back to the duel.

Jake cringed, as spell after spell bombarded their opponent. Now that all of them could see, there was nothing in their way from the three-on-one battle that they had found themselves in. Jake still tried his absolute best, he owed that to the Gryffindor girl on the other team. And she fought hard - casting at both of his team-mates at the same time, one of those spells connecting with Lucia. But the momentum was swinging in the Hufflepuff team's favor.

Where did the Gryffindors get the courage to fight against unsurmountable odds? Nicky barely even looked nervous. The lions were strong, but was there time for her to come back ?
