Defense Against the Dark Arts
When Caitlin came stumbling in, soaked with water, everyone turned their heads and the teacher looked as if he was about to ask her what had happened. But instead he sighed as if it wasn't the first time he had encountered something like this. He then continued.
"The jinx is the first and lowest level of Dark spell. Jinxes usually will not cause much harm and are considered to be more of a minor irritation than a serious problem. All of these spells, and any spell that falls under the classification of jinx will not cause any lasting damage," he told them, "Some people will even frequently use jinxes to assist with practical jokes, a habit I suggest none of you participate in." Their teacher lingered on that last sentence long enough to make a point as he looked about the classroom, seemingly making eye-contact with every single one of them.
Joanne continued scribbling along, trying to keep up. She was almost copying him word-by-word, not wanting to miss a thing. Suddenly Caitlin had gotten up, which distracted her. The teacher didn't seem to notice it. "What happened?" Joanne whispered, not wanting to anger her teacher.
"The hex is the second classification of Dark spell. These spells are a bit darker than the jinx and will often do more lasting damage," he told them and named some hexes by name. "Last, but certainly not least, we have the final classification of the Dark Arts.; the curse. The curse is the darkest and most dangerous classification of the Dark Arts. These spells are usually cast with the intent to severely harm or potentially even kill the target. The use of these spells is often discouraged unless absolutely necessary."
"As First Years, I would not expect you to be able to cast any of the curses I have mentioned, but I may provide a lesser curse in a lesson to give you an example."

Marcus nodded with a smile when he sees Caitlin wave to him, waving back for a few seconds then looked over to the Professor "Sir, if we do perform spells like say the stunning spell or the blasting spell, do we receive house points?" He asked curiously, as he wouldn't mind earning his house some free house points, glancing around at everyone from his corner of the room, he grinned at them all "Or..for that matter a Fire Whip spell, and maybe a Lightning Whip spell that my father worked on" He added, allowing his quill to write by itself as he waited for the professor to say something 'I wonder where the other Slytherins are..all I see in Slytherin are myself and the one kid over by the Puffs' he thought to himself in amusement seeing a Snake hanging out with Badgers 'We are missing Erin, Ada, Ava and Alex from the Slytherins I have met, shame..shame...shame' he thought as he snickered lightly to himself.
He resumes looking around the room 'I see quite a few Gryffs here, not surprising honestly..Puffs are far to many for the party house, Claws are surprisingly low in number like my own' he shrugged his shoulders lightly as he continues to think while waiting for the professor.

Caitlin came back after a third of the class was over. The teacher paid her no mind as she retook her seat in the back. Well, that just shows how much the teachers really care about us. What happened to being 'the future of us all!' and that good crap. Well, we will see who is the future when you are on your deathbed. Caitlin was shocked by her thoughts. What was that and where the heck did it come from? That was so unlike her and it scared her. Quickly she pushed it away and looked out the window. A clear sky met her gaze as she tuned out the lesson so she would not push herself into another panic attack.

Marcus looks over to the door and notices Caitlin return from wherever she went, raising an eyebrow he begins to write something on his parchment "Hey, everything okay? - Marcus" He nodded at the simple question then used a switching spell to switch his paper with his question with Caitlin's paper, looking back over to the Professor to make sure he wasn't being watched, he waits for her to reply somehow or to look over to him as he has her in the corner of his eye 'Not even sure why I am worrying over a Gryff, but Mom and Dad did say to make friends with all the houses, so why not?' he thought , listening to the teacher as they introduce the incideo spell to everyone, raising an eyebrow at the spell then shakes his head 'Thank Merlin for my tutors right now, which also means Thank Merlin for being a Pureblood' he smiled to himself as he thought that 'Damn I couldn't imagine being someone who hasn't received tutoring' he shakes his head of those disturbing thoughts and refocuses learning about the fire-making spell once again 'I should attempt a modifier, it would piss off the professor but it would be damn worth it'

Caitlin visibly jumped when the paper under her hand that she was just about to write on disappeared only to have a different paper appear. She rolled her eyes slightly and gave him a look before writing back, "Yeah, just some bad memories coming back to kick my butt. ~Caitlin" She thought for a moment before her mother's teachings came back to her and she said the simple spell for the paper to Marcus. She sighed and put her quill back in her inkwell as she awaited his response. She watched the teacher and made sure he was not looking when she charmed the book she had checked out from the library to look exactly like her DADA book and switching them out. Caitlin pulled the bookmark out from the pages and picked up where she last had left off. The prince was just about to kiss the princess. Why was she such a sucker for romance? She literally fit into the 'all girls love romance' clique and basically ruled the club with an iron fist. She trailed off on reading as she started to fantasize about how her first kiss would go before shaking it off as the paper came back to her.

Time and space would seem to bend around some. Perhaps she was a contrarian in that time moved differently for her. Slower. There was something to be said for patience, a skill not yet honed by the zealous but unrefined youth yet she had more than they did. She found being a student dull, arduous and depressing. It appeared that some, despite the fact that it was the first week or so, had already been gifted with knowledge beyond their setting and station. Why didn't she receive a preemptive education? Her parents of course had their reasons, or rather their concerns. A desire to mute her progress until she was in a controlled setting with true masters of the craft. Perhaps they did the right thing. Perhaps they did not.
She felt it was an insurmountable challenge to catch up. To feel as if she was running a race where she could only see everyone's back. Yet it conflicted with her sentiment that much of the dribble that escaped her teacher's maw was useless, a time-waster, the product of tradition and superstition.
Marcus would make her point as he offered to demonstrate a spell that the class had not even been taught yet to recognition. For some arbitrary points to be assigned to their house. She should be rooting for her fellow Slytherin but there was a seething annoyance. Why did he know these things? Why did he even bother coming to this school if he already knew enough coming in? She was jealous, no not of his rising popularity. Yes, she saw how some of the girls looked at him. *Bleep*, she was pretty sure a boy or two might have also looked his way. They could have that part of him, she was more interested, concerned and incited over the fact that he was a know-it-all that knew more than her. No, that was not much of an accomplishment, but it was enough to *bleep* her off.
She would watch as some of the students entered late, taking little effort to enter unnoticed. Some barge from the room and return seconds later, she had barely the chance to blink or react. She would listen to the teacher drone on about the caution they needed to employ, the inherent dangers and of course the fact that with power comes risk and loss. She had to wonder losses for who? She saw a number of 'good' spells with few, rare positive, non-damaging practical uses. Wern't spells that created a blaze 'evil' despite being called 'charms' as a jinx or a curse. Just one is considered 'acceptable,' necessary and even defensible. A part of her wanted to say this but today, thus far, at the very least she had not earned a seat in detention. She was getting tired of rotting away in boredom in that dusty, small room.
She took a deep breath through flared nares and rested her back into the chair. Class was almost over wasn't it? Just needed to stay quiet for a little while longer.

Marcus glanced down to his parchment when he felt the switching spell, frowning a bit then proceeding to respond "Well if you want to talk, let me know - Marcus" he wrote, then sent the parchment to Caitlin via a switching spell, noticing Erin he grins a bit as he writes down on a parchment "Why hello Miss Erin, someone is looking a bit stressed out - Marcus" He sent to note to her via a switching spell, then checked if the professor was looking, seeing they are not he wrote into a parchment "Still up for that study session by the way? - Marcus" Using another switching spell to Erin, he yawned a bit as he looked around for an open seat near him so he could put his feet up and relax, seeing one to his left he grins putting his feet on the chair "Ah so comfy" he muttered with a soft chuckle, looking around for anyone else he knows.
After a few minutes of searching he stretches waiting for someone to send him a note 'I think this class may become the history magic class of the past, cause damn this is boring' he thought snickering softly to himself.

"You should not worry. I will get over it, I always do. I am just being a baby." Caitlin sent back to him as she glanced back at Marcus only to see him with his feet in a chair. She wrote on another piece of paper, "My mother would knock you upside the head if she saw you like that. Trust me, I would know." Caitlin sent it with a smile on her face as she watched him from the corner of her eye.
"Miss Jones! If you would stop staring at Mr Wynter long enough to pay attention then you could tell me the three unforgivable curses!" Caitlin tried to hold back her temper, she really did. But this teacher was doing her head in. "Well maybe if you would stop jumping around in your teaching like you are playing hopscotch then maybe I could pay attention! I swear by the way you teach I'm surprised if any of your students survived a basic duel with anyone, let alone someone who was actually trying to kill them! Oh, and they are Avada Kedavra, Crucio, and Imperio." She sat down with a loud huff and ran her fingers through her hair.

(Oh god Caitlin, best post today lol)
Marcus covered his mouth to keep from laughing but you could still hear a slight snickering coming from him 'Oh damn hahaha she ripped him a new one and still answered the questions correctly' he thought almost falling out of his chair trying to hold his laughter in, finally calming down after a few, he wrote down a note to Caitlin "You go girl! haha! - Marcus" then switched it over to her with a grin and a chuckle as he waited for the professor to respond to Caitlin's outburst 'I wonder if they will be taking house points and giving them as well soon' he thought with a shrug 'Least they didn't take points from Erin yet' he added to his thoughts then glanced over to Erin to see her response to Caitlin's outburst 'Those two could probably be the best of friends' he snickered at his added thought 'Oh Merlin..A Gryff and A Snake becoming Best Friends, people would probably say Erin was giving her loyalty potions or some absurd shit' he rolled his eyes then glanced ahead once more "Professor..she did get the question correctly" he informed the professor with an innocent smile on his face.

Rian was interested in this lecture. It was all new to him, his father was always too busy and his mother refused to teach much. Overall, Rian pondered most about the first classifications of dark magic. Mostly because he liked playing jokes on others.
After a while, he heard an outburst from his classmate. Caitlin seems to be making a fuss. Rian decided he should speak, after she finished speaking. "Professor, while some of us may not be interested, a couple of us are taking notes and are quite interested." He continued," I think, however, the constant history lesson is overwhelming." he then paused to collect his thoughts.
"Earlier Marcus wanted to demonstrate some spells, I would also like to see them." Rian said, looking over at Marcus. "Or maybe a lesson on something a bit more practical, it might be a nice break for us all."
To Rian, at least, he wasn't being rude. He thought this was fair and really did want to see some spells being used. As the history lesson was getting boring. Rian just wanted the lesson to go on without more people causing troubles. Since others were so bothered by it, why not also put what he thought into the mix?
