Thomas stood huddled in a group of other first year students eagerly awaiting to lay eyes on the quidditch pitch. It was one of the few things to excite him since he arrived at Hogwarts seven days ago. There was a larger distance between Thomas and the other students. He desired desperately to take off on a broom and circle around the field until sunset, even if he didn’t remotely understand how to even mount a broom. “This way first years!” The prefect shouted, briskly walking back towards the castle. Thomas glanced over to the pitch once more. He wandered away from the group towards the field, looking up at towers that displayed Slytherin’s notorious symbol. His insides turned with his tense stare. “Come on Thomas!” Thomas quickly turned around to see the group impatiently waiting on him. His blue eyes appeared hollow, his face turning red. It was no secret Thomas wanted to create permanent separation, laying in the field all day to stare at the sky.
It was only an hour past noon and the anticipation of the school tour failed to entice Thomas like the other students. They were nearing the main courtyard when the prefect leading the tour stopped. “This concludes the tour, first years. Feel free to explore around here, but don’t find yourself going too far.” The prefect stared down Thomas at the end of his sentence. He then turned away and walked toward the large doors that led into the castle. Thomas clutched his pockets in anger, he was already off to a bad start as far as impressions go. When clutching his robe pocket, he felt a parchment crumpling. He pulled out the owl he received six days ago from his mother. It wasn’t like Thomas to ignore his mother. His anxiety around her reaction to being selected to the same house as his father led to dread. Thomas narrowed his piercing blue eyes while he did a 360, insuring no one was watching. He carefully walked to an isolated corner in the courtyard, sitting in one of the large arched windows to open the owl.
“Please don’t be discouraged, Tom. You have his blood running through your veins, but you’re not him. Your uncle tells me it’d have been a shame if you weren’t selected into Slytherin! You have many choices ahead of you, I know you’ll make the right ones. Just promise me you’ll put yourself out there… Don’t close yourself off! I just kn—” Thomas crumpled the owl from his mother, making a fist. His mother’s words often had the reverse effect since Thomas learned of his father’s true purpose. Once a strong-minded wizard with a just moral code. Many poor decisions led him into the pursuit of darkness, losing his life prematurely. Thomas often wonders if his father were still alive, would he have Thomas dedicated to the same dark nature. It’s a question that’s haunted him, leading to the inevitable thought that he is bound to make the same mistakes.
“I’m bound for it, just like him.” Thomas spoke aloud, throwing the crumpled owl on the ground to signify his defeated feelings. While a part of him was relieved to know his mother is not critical of his house, he still questioned her true feelings. Thomas vaulted himself off the stone arch. He turned to his left to pick up the parchment but froze in the process. Another student sat only a few arches down. Thomas froze in fear she had been sitting there the whole time. “I—uh, those damn collectors.” He muttered awkwardly, trying to give somewhat of an explanation to his minor temper tantrum. Thomas shoved the parchment back into his pocket, some of the words from his mother’s owl echoing in his head. Put yourself out there… Thomas relaxed his stance, leaning against the stone arch he had just vacated. “Been there the whole time, have you?” His lips curved up into a shy smile, trying to play off the embarrassing moment.

Though Talia definitely wasn't very good at the sport, she often found herself admiring the quidditch pitch. It was so surreal and magical to the girl that, up until a few months ago, hadn't seen anything outside of her small hometown. The whole new world that had opened up for her had definitely both scared and excited the small, young brunette. But then again, lots of things scared and excited her!
So the girl, the girl in the fuzzy socks and knit scarf, lopsided beanie, and sweater that was many sizes too big for her petite size, sat on an arch in the pitch, swinging her legs and absentmindedly moving her head from side to side, humming a melody quietly, off in some strangely enticing daydream with flying kittens and cotton candy for clouds, something like that.
But when she heard a voice, Tal snapped back into reality, with a startled jump. She froze, her already big eyes growing and growing until she was sure they were close to covering her whole face, her once swinging legs at a complete standstill. Had she been there the whole time? She probably had, honestly, she had lost track of time while in thought, and she hadn't seen him there before!
"Uh, yeah, I s'pose," came her quiet and soft voice, offering a shy but friendly smile.
"Bad owl?" Talia asked, hopefully and empathetically, her caramel eyes breaking their gaze from the boy's face to look at the crumpled up paper in his hand. She pushed off of her hands, hopping off of the ledge she was sitting on and walking closer. She kept her small hands in her pockets, not sure if he was wanting to talk to her, or if she should just let him be.

It was a delightful presence for the young Slytherin, a girl with empathetic eyes facing him. Her expression of concern despite understanding of what fueled his discontent was unmistakably kind. Often through his early tenure at Hogwarts, the boy had been challenged to face others in his house that questioned him. Whether it was half-blood status, or the opaque generalizations of his father’s legacy, he has yet to encounter precipitous kindness. He wouldn’t care to admit it was a presence he needed.
"Uh, yeah, I s'pose. Bad owl?”
Thomas looked to the crumpled owl before storing it in the pouch along the side of his house robes, trademarked by the notorious Slytherin symbol. His face reddened slightly, embarrassed he would have to explain his angry behavior. Normally, he would simply tell the other student to get lost or leave me be. This girl, however, did not present any ill-will. At least not on her exterior.
Thomas shook his head subtly, blue eyes traveling up to view the various towers containing logos from the four different houses on the quidditch pitch. “Not necessarily,” He released a gentle sigh, looking back to the girl. “Do you ever feel…” He paused for a moment, unscrambling what he means to say in his head. “like you don’t have control of who you will become.” He scanned her apparel looking for a symbol or sign that would reveal her house. He could not find one. “What house are you in?” He spoke directly. If left to his own assumptions, he would say she is not a Slytherin. After previous encounters with other Slytherin students, he desperately hoped she was not.

Did Talia feel like she wasn't in control of who she'd become? Ooh, now that was an interesting question! What did Talia think about fate and the future? Looking up to the fluffy white clouds drifting peacefully across the blue sky, the girl took a moment to come up with a good answer.
When she finally had found the proper words, Tal spoke, her voice only a little above a whisper and equally as whimsical and thoughtful.
"Sometimes I feel like that. Like I don't have control over my future. But then I try to remember that sometimes you just have to roll with it, and just do what you can when you can," came her simple response. She smiled at the boy, hoping that her answer was good enough for him.
Of course, some things were out of Talia's power. But that's okay, Tal was doing her best. And that was the best anybody could offer.
And then Talia was asked what house she was in! This question was one that had a definitive answer, all philosophy aside, and it felt natural when the girl responded with a cheerful, "I'm a Hufflepuff! Oh, and my name is Talia, nice to meet you!"
