Late Morning, Partly Cloudy
The trips Sage made to the Owlery were few and far between; usually on a weekend morning when she didn’t have to wake early for classes. The first week of school she might’ve written home at least once a week; now it’s once every two. Having settled into a routine certainly made life a bit more predictable and Sage found herself keeping a somewhat busy yet leisurely schedule.
On these mornings, Sage trudged up the Owlery before breakfast, when her mind was still clear and undulled by carbohydrates. Sage could be found at the top floor of the tower, perched on the stairs, parchment and quill on her lap - sometimes she wrote on the window ledges if they weren't particularly covered in bird poop. Usually, she used one of the school owls, but if all had been sent out, which was sometimes the case, Sage would have to beseech her brother’s pet crow to send the letter for her. It was customary to bring a token of sorts, which is why her pockets would seem heavier than usual. Her bribes included seeds or small berries, perhaps something shiny like a hairclip - just so she wouldn’t end up getting pecked at.

Dear Mum, Father and Turner,
How are things at home? I’m doing well. The classes are interesting; I seem to be doing better in Transfiguration than in Charms - swishing and flicking, all that delicate wandwork makes my head ache. I would ask Brother but he’s always with his friends, studying for his N.E.W.Ts or somesuch, so he’s no help at all.
Turner, I think you’ll love it here; especially the class on Magical Creatures - you love dragons, don’t you? Someone was asking about them the other day, but I don’t think we will be studying them anytime soon. Give Father some kisses for me.
I miss you all.
Love,
Sage
P.S. Please send me those lavender cookies from last time, Mum. I think they go very well with the peppermint tea they have here, I find it helps me focus on my homework. Thank you!

Saturday morning
Dear Mum, Father and Turner,
It's raining lightly as I write this, the ledges in the Owlery tower are wet and cold so I am huddled by the stairwell at the moment.
How's everyone doing? School's fine. You'll be pleased to know that I'm keeping up with Gus in terms of grade average. I'm expecting some treats for my hard work, alright? Just kidding. Oh, and I've made some friends - they're lovely if a bit odd, sometimes. I'm not as popular as Gus but I don't mind that at all.
I must have grown another inch last week. My sweaters are beginning to feel tight around the chest and shoulders. Gus calls me a glutton, but I've only been eating sandwiches lately. Maybe the house-elves have been washing my clothes wrong?
Anyway, I'll be home for Christmas.
Love,
Sage
P.S. I miss Father's lamb quiche so terribly. Hint hint.

Monday, just after midnight
My dear family,
Happy New Year.
I know haven't been sending owls as often as I should. I feel like I have disappointed all of you and I understand if you never speak to me again. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. For everything that's come to pass in the last year.
I'm still hurting. I suppose a part of me will remain as such, but it's in my best interest that I move past my grief, somehow.
Knowing Sophia has been the best and worst thing to have happened to me - as dramatic as that may sound. As you know, I was very fond of Soph - she was like a sister to me - but I suppose you never know the depths of a person unless they reveal it to you. I don't know if I'll open up to another the way I did with her. Her reasons for disappearing will continue to evade me but things happen the way they do, when they do, and it might be best to leave it at that.
I hope this wasn't too somber of a New Year's greetings. I suppose I wanted to let you know that I've decided to start over. I'm regretful that it had to come to this even. I'll try coming home for the summer but no promises.
Love always,
Sage
P.S. The fireworks here aren't quite as bright as when I light them up with you.
