Out by the Great Lake was a small girl wielding a large wooden stick, if you might guess she was playing pretend. You would likely be wrong, as opposed of the wild movements of a magician that Elena would emulate if daydreaming was the exercise of the day, the only loud or dramatic thing to happen was the loud singing floating over the lakeshore.

"Do I look lonely?" Elena smiled, "I see the shadows on my face. People have told me, I don't look the same..."

An interesting premise from an interesting book, a staff with your life story carved out on it. Not that she'd had a lot of life but the piece of wood she'd found for it was about a foot and a half taller than she was. More life meant more story, so for now she carved what she knew. A sketchbook lay open nearby with random ideas and parts of her journal. An inability to draw people led to her friends instead being represented with creatures.

Elena was the hummingbird, Alan a mouse, Rorie was a lion, Min-seo was a bunny, the people that somehow haunted her still were represented by a rat, or a long shadow. As for Griffith she was still figuring it out. Maybe a griffin would do the trick...

Alex walked along the path by the Great Lake, his pale cheeks dusted with a light pink across his freckles. He was quite the small boy, only coming up to about 4’6, not really the ideal height for someone his age (he thought that at least.) His white beanie was positioned towards the back of his head over a mop of ink black hair. He started to hum a soft song, making him more relaxed. At this time of year, the snow wasn’t as heavy as in the beginning and the middle of winter, and you could see little plants coming out of the snow, the green contrasting with the white. He smiled softly to himself. Oh sure, he loved winter a lot, but it would be nice to bring back a little green into his life, it reminded him of home in a way, back in China. He always remembered going on holidays with his family to the most beautiful places in the spring and summer time. Boy did he miss it. He hadn’t been there in years. His ears perked up as he heard someone singing...what was it...hold on....Panic! At the Disco. He smiled and walked over. He softly sang the next line with a smile. ”Maybe I’ve lost weight, I’m playing hookey...with the best of the best, pull my heart out of my chest, so that you can see it too...”

The only thing about singing while you work is it attracts random people, this time it netted someone with enough guts to bother to sing along. It wasn't too bad either, good enough for Elena certainly. There was a hint of an accent in his voice, interesting, but not something she was going to ask about. Most everyone announced whatever made them unique if she was within earshot, it's not like Elena went around telling everyone why her hair was blue. There was a reason, a special reason, but nobody but her knew.

A griffin wouldn't work, she was nowhere near as skilled as she'd need to be to carve that. Had to be something with wings, the idea of a dove crossed her mind. No wait, doves were symbols of peace, that wouldn't work at all. The bird would have to be snarky, maybe a crow would do. Yes, or a raven. The two weren't that differentiable either way.

Elena looked up to the kid that'd come up, about the same height as her, probably, and wearing a fancy looking white beanie. Seemed nice enough, no need to scare this one away by waving the carving tools at him. Some of them were very, um, scary looking.

"I'm walking the long road, watching the sky fall." Elena gestured for him to sit down nearby, "The lace in your dress, tangles my neck, how can I live?"
