Getting Off Easy
The time flew by for Amanda, her mind occupied by her work. When she finished all of her homework, she pulled out The Hobbit and opened it to the first page, excitement bubbling up inside of her. Her eyes drifted to an introductory paragraph titled “And what is a Hobbit?” According to the text, hobbits were small people who liked to eat. Sounds like me, Amanda thought to herself while turning through the pages, pausing to briefly glance at some maps, one of which was written mostly in runic. When she reached the first page of the actual story, Amanda nestled down in the chair and began to read.
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”
As she read further into the book, Amanda was whisked away to Middle Earth, her mind filled with thoughts of hobbit, dwarves, elves, and wizards; all of which were equally fascinating to her. She paused at a chapter called “Over Hill and Under Hill” to check the time on her enchanted sundial. She looked up at the girls. “You can be done now. Just put whatever books you didn’t get to back on the carts and wheel them over there,” she instructed, pointing to an area by the librarian’s desk. And with that, she packed up her stuff, checked out The Hobbit, and left the library.
“Oh, I may be on the side of the angels, but don't think for one second that I am one of them.”
