Winter stroll
On a snowy morning during the holidays ...
Even though he missed his family dearly, Augustus was happy not to go home during the holidays. From what his mother had told him and from what some older students confirmed, Hogwarts was particularly delightful during Christmas season. It was also going to be the perfect opportunity for the young Gryffindor to spend some leisure time, explore the castle, stuff himself with the delicious food at the feasts, hang out with friends and mostly just relax.
As a matter of fact, the trimester had been quite something. Not that he was complaining though. He actually had the best time of his life, in spite of his busy schedule. The first few weeks at the renowned school were full of wonder and discovery. His first classes were very interesting (at least in his humble opinion) and the company hadn’t been half as bad as he first feared. However, things quickly got intense, as fall slowly faded faded away, giving place to winter and the midterms that came with it. So during the last few weeks, most of Augustus’s time was divided between attending class and studying either in the study room, the library or his dormitory for the coming exams. All the adventures and exploration he had first planned had been on hold since then. Until now. Now that every essay had been deposited and every test completed, he was finally free to pursue his avid desire of exciting adventures.
It was a cold but sunny morning at Hogwarts. Augustus was sitting at the Gryffindor table, having breakfast by himself. The castle was vibrating with the holiday spirit. Decorations were all over the place and sometimes, even the statues would break down in merry Christmas carol. On the other hand, as the days passed, the school was emptier and emptier, as students went back home to celebrate with their families. If some would find it deplorable, Augustus on the other hand found it peaceful. It was a different atmosphere than the usually crowded establishment and combined with the stillness of life that came with winter, the young boy came to appreciate the calming aura of this particular period. As he washed down the last of his fried eggs with some hot chocolate, he got up and put on the coat he had beside him. Then, he made his way outside and to the owlery, where he sent a letter to his parents, to wish them a merry Christmas and keep them updated on his progress. After that, he had planned on heading straight to the common room for some socialisation time beside the fireplace but as he was making his way down from the owlery, his found himself mesmerized by the scenery. Usually, Augustus hated the cold. He appreciated the snow, for a while, but after a week or two, he was ready for summer again. After all, he was born in Algeria and in his country, the winters were way more merciful. However, looking at the white snowy drape covering the whole castle grounds, he couldn’t help himself but to find it beautiful for once. So instead of going back inside right away, he decided to walk across the grounds. He followed a dozen paths, turning left and right as his heart desired, crossing path with a few students, but never stopping more than a minute or two to salute a friend. Finally, he arrived in front of tall mighty oak tree, frozen stalactites drizzling down from its thick branches. Augustus decided to stop there for a rest, and sat down at the base of the tree, gazing upon the horizon.

Tracey had decided to stay at Hogwarts during the winter break for a few reasons, she didn't want to leave the castle like her mother had said to her before Tracey had stepped foot onto the Hogwarts Express, Tracey hadn't explored the castle yet, and she knew that it'd be quite and she might be able to make some more friends.
Tracey is a quite girl, so with the castle now peaceful, she felt much more safer than she did before. Tracey also took this opportunity to meet some other students that aren't in the Ravenclaw house, since she's mostly interacted with Ravenclaws which she didn't hate, but she wanted to learn about the other houses and what there like.
Currently, Tracey was taking a walk around the grounds. Tracey hadn't really visited the grounds much during the trimester, so she took this time to do so. Tracey loved nature and she especially loved how the castle looked during winter time. The snow was very pretty and she was glad that she stayed at the castle. Tracey saw an oak tree and walked over to it. She saw a Gryffindor boy that was around her age and she decided to talk to him, since he might become her very first Gryffindor friend.
"Uh, he-hello. Mind if I-I join you? Um, I-I'm Tracey Bailey, by the way," Tracey said amazed that she didn't stutter that much but then realized that she had met a lot of people already and was feeling much more confident in talking to people.

As he was leaning of the massive oak tree, Augustus almost fell asleep. Admiring the snow covered grounds, the big castle and its great towers reaching for the stars had a very calming effect on the young wizard. Even though he felt the slight sting of the cold breeze, he somewhat felt comfortable. At this moment, he truly felt the magic of Hogwarts. For a Mediterranean young man as him, to actually feel cold and enjoy it, was something he would have never thought of. At this point, his mind drifted back to Algeria. The great white building of Algiers, his neighborhood friends, the sea, the warm breeze swiping through the beaches. He was missing it. As the nostalgia swarmed over him, he wondered what his parents were doing at this moment. He imagined his mother, cooking some delicious north African delicacy, his father stuffing his nose in his old books and then he also missed home. But he did not regret his choice. Staying at Hogwarts during the holidays was a good decision. After all, he would have all summer to spend time with his family and next year, nothing would stop him from going back home for Christmas.
As he was lost in his thoughts, he was surprised by someone interrupting his meditative state. It was a young girl with pretty curly short brown hair. She wore it in bangs, which Augustus thought it fitted her well. By the blue crest on her robe, he knew she was a Ravenclaw. That ought to be interesting ! Even though he spoke with everyone and was generally very friendly, he hadn’t yet spent much time with students from other houses, as he was mostly hanging out around his common room. As the young lady introduced herself and, Augustus jumped to his feet and patted down his snow covered pants as he approached her. With a benevolent smile, his presented her his hand.
- Hello Tracey ! No, I don’t mind at all. My name is Augustus Faris, Gryffindor, first year, he blurted out. How are you enjoying the holidays at Hogwarts ?, he asked.

While waiting for the boy to reply, Tracey saw the Gryffindor boy jump to his feet to approach her. She also saw him holding out his hand. Tracey took it and wasn't sure if he wanted a hand shake or not, so she didn't do anything. No one had held out their hand to Tracey before so this was a very new thing to her.
"He-hello Augustus. I-I'm al-also a first year, but in Ravenclaw, a-as you probably saw by my robes. So far everything's good. I just fin-finished the last of my homework that I had forgotten all about. A-and now I decided to explore the castle before everyone comes back, since I haven't done so. What about you? D'you have a-any plans while staying here?" Tracey says in reply to what Augustus said.
Tracey was feeling very proud of herself for not stuttering as much as she did when the term first started. Tracey was a stuttering mess, but now, not so much. Tracey knew that soon she wouldn't even be stuttering when she met someone which was a very big improvement for the young Ravenclaw.
Tracey hopes that Augustus will be fine by her questioning about the Gryffindor house. Tracey was very curious about the other houses and wanted to know what they were like since Tracey was always around Ravenclaw's she never got to ask this question. Tracey wouldn't mind if anyone asked her how Ravenclaw was like, she'd gladly tell them.

The young lady introduced herself. As he had guessed, she was, as a matter of fact, a member of Ravenclaw. As she took his hand, she simply grabbed it and stood still. Augustus waited for a few seconds to see if she would shake it but nothing. He found the matter funny and proceeded to lead by example and initiate the shaking motion himself. A big grin appeared on his face. He didn’t know what it was, but the Ravenclaw had something special that really piqued his curiosity.
- Oh congratulations for your homework, he supportively said. He had finished his too and he understood what a relief it could be. And it seems like we have the same plans apparently !, he pursued, as the young girl told him about her plans to explore the castle while it was emptier. With all the stress of the few first months, I didn’t have the time to explore the castle as I would have liked. So I stayed to get this opportunity too !
He stopped for a few moments and looked at the oak tree he was previously leaning on. As the conversation was going, he also noticed that his interlocutor stuttered less and less. The idea of being comfortable enough to be around warmed him a little bit, in contrast of the cold temperature. If he had anything to do with her being less anxious, it made him happy.
- Well, since we are there already, how about some exploring ?, he asked. We should start with the grounds, what do you think ?, he continued while opening his arms in a motion to point at the beautiful surroundings.

Tracey felt her hand being shook and realized that was what she should've done, but then again, she had never shook hands with anyone before and this was all new to her, since she mostly spent her time alone. Tracey made a mental note in her head that if someone holds out their hand upon meeting them, it'd most likely be for a hand shake.
"Uh, sorry about that. Th-this was the first time I've ever shook hands with someone before, so this is new to me. Uh, thanks, did you also get all your homework done? Oh, really? The first few months w-were indeed stressful, and I've mostly talked to people in my own house. But, I did find a hidden room while going back to the common room," Tracey says when she heard Augustus' reply.
Tracey wasn't sure if Augustus had visited the hidden room on the fifth floor, but Tracey didn't know what the room was called, and she had met two other first year Ravenclaw's and one older Gryffindor boy who didn't stay in the room for that long like the other two did.
"Sure, we should start off with the grounds. Oh, I tripped over air one time and fell into the Great Lake. It was really embarrassing and a fellow house mate saw too! I was so embarrassed that I my hair turned red! Oh, I-I wasn't supposed to say that," Tracey said while looking at the lake.
When Tracey had mentioned her hair turning red, her face turned red from embarrassment, she didn't want Augustus to find out about her being a metamorph, but again her hair started turning red. Tracey sighed and thought,
"Uh oh, not again! This happened not so long ago with Renelle!"

Augustus couldn’t help himself but look surprised when he heard the Ravenclaw girl saying that it was her first time shaking hands with someone. It was true enough that it wasn’t a very common practice for youth of their age, but still, he expected everyone to know about that courtesy. In any case, he found it funny and was glad that now Tracey knew about it. After all, it was definitely going to be useful later in her adult life. He nodded with approval as she said that the first months were stressful, but looked at her in awe when she mentioned the finding of a hidden room on her way to her to Ravenclaw’s common room. Instantly, she had his full attention.
Then Tracey pursued, agreeing about the plans of exploration and suggested that they start with the grounds, which seemed very appropriate to Augustus. He laughed kindly when she told him about her fall in the Great Lake, but his laughter was quickly put to an end when she mentioned her hair color changing. Before Augustus could ask anything about it, it happened right in front of him. Tracey’s hair, which was black as night at first, became of a vibrant red color. The young Gryffindor tried to hide his surprise, not to make her feel embarrassed, but it was already too late, as he could say by her extreme blushing.
- Oh wow !, he exclaimed. I-…-I’m sorry, I wasn’t expecting that ! It’s really cool if you ask me !, he continued, trying to reassure her. He wasn’t lying either, he really thought that phenomenon to be amazing. May I ask how you do that ? It’s magic right ? Do you control it ? Can you choose the color ? He then took a little break and followed with a nervous laugh. At this point he felt bad for bombing her with questions. I’m sorry, I don’t want to be indiscreet. But don’t worry, I truly do think it’s amazing !

Tracey looked down at the ground not wanting to hear what Augustus was going to say. While she was looking at the ground, her face went less red, and soon was back to its original color. Tracey was surprised by Augustus' reply. When she heard what he said, her head shot up and she didn't hide her surprised expression at all. Tracey wasn't expecting Augustus to say something so positive to her, and it made her feel very happy. She smiled at him before saying,
"Yes, indeed it's magic, tho it's a very rare ability. I'm a Metamorphmagi, and the ability I have is called Metamorphmagus. I have the ability to change my appearance at will, but it mostly changes whenever I'm feeling a strong emotion. I'm trying to hide the fact that I have the ability since I'm not sure how people will react,"
After she said that, Tracey allowed her hair to grow longer, become slightly wavy, and be a light brown color. Tracey looked at the lake to see her reflection and was happy with her new look. Maybe she'll change it again once winter break is over, or she'll just keep the brown color for a while. Tracey looked back at Augustus but didn't say anything. At this point Tracey had just given him two examples of what a Metamorphmagi can do.

As Augustus stared in awe at Tracey’s hair going back to it’s original color, his air of surprise quickly turned into an air of wonder, as she explained to him about her particular ability. He had in fact heard about some wizards and witches with an inclination towards transfiguration, called Metamorphmagi, but he had never met one or seen one in action. As far as he knew, that young Ravenclaw student was probably greatly proficient with magic. After all, one had to be, to be able to change it’s appearance with such ease. When Tracey told him that she tried to hide her amazing powers because of she feared how people would react, Augustus tried to wear his most benevolent smile and shake off the surprise in his eyes.
- I heard about Metamorphmagi but I never had to honor to meet one ! he said, trying to make her feel more comfortable. As he was speaking, Tracey’s hair became longer and wavier and changed color to go from black to a light brown. See !, he pointed out. That’s amazing, I wish I could do that too. You must definitely be a powerful witch. If I was you, I would never hide it ! Anyone judging for that must be either jealous, or a hateful idiot that doesn’t deserve your attention, he pursued in an assured tone.
That was definitely the Gryffindor in him speaking. Augustus was a proud young wizard and he respected talent and magical proficiency. Hopefully, he didn’t seem too rude. After all, he only wanted to reassure his new acquaintance.
- How about we start with the Great Lake and its vicinity ?, he asked as he started walking towards the great body of water. I promise not to let you trip over air this time, he added while kindly laughing. On the way there, you could tell me more about your powers !, he stated, but refracted himself quickly as he remembered she was shy about it. I mean, if you want to obviously ! He paused for a moment to see if the girl would follow. How does one get those ? Did you train ? Or were you born with it ? He felt slightly bad for asking questions like that, but he thought he couldn’t miss the opportunity to learn more about such a fascinating piece of magic.

Tracey was surprised by Augustus' reply. She then just realized that this is the Wizarding World and that Purebloods and Wizard Borns as well as Half-Bloods live in the Wizarding World, but Half-Bloods could also live in the Muggle World like the Muggle borns do. Tracey mentally face palmed due to her being surprised, but made sure to not let her emotion slip, since she didn't want her hair to change color again.
"You've heard of a Metamorphmagi before? My mother is one too, tho none of her siblings are, and none of my cousins are, so it's just me and my mom who are a Metamorph. I-I'm not a powerful witch. If you ask me, this is a gift that I have gotten. Uh, I guess your right, I don't know why I was so scared to show my ability, but I'll show my ability more," Tracey says to Augustus.
Tracey gave him a smile. She was glad that she had showed her ability to Augustus since he had given her a good response to her ability and made her realize that she could show her ability to other people and they'd most likely have the same response as Augustus did, hopefully.
"Yeah, that sounds good. But I don't think I'll fall into the lake this time. Sure, I don't mind talking about my ability. Like I said before, I was born with it. It's pretty random when you get it tho. It's a very rare ability and not everyone gets it. Mostly purebloods have the ability, but seeing as I'm a half-blood I got the ability from my mothers side, since she's a pureblood. Once I had got the ability, my hair would always change all sorts of colors and my eyes too! Then my mother taught me how to control it and I now change my hair color when I feel like it, but it still changes color whenever I feel a strong emotion, like it did when I told you about falling into the lake,"
Tracey said this all while walking to the lake with Augustus. She was happy to be able to talk about her ability more and if he asked her any more questions about it, she'd gladly answer them.
