It was bright and early in the Great Hall. Juniper had gotten up a bit earlier than usual to get caught up on some personal reading. Due to schoolwork, she had had far less time to read her novels, so she had to carve time out of the day to do so. Before going off and finding a spot to read, breakfast was in order. Sitting down at the Slytherin table she gave her surrounding housemates a small smile and then inhaled deeply, taking in all the wonderful scents coming from the table. It wasn’t very busy yet as it was earlier in the morning when most students were still in bed but there were a few students scattered around, no one she really knew though. The table was full of food, there was bacon, fried sausages, fried tomatoes, kippers, toast, all types of rolls, pumpkin juice, tea, and coffee, all emitting delicious scents. Immediately Juniper helped herself to some tea, she preferred builders tea herself with lots of sugar and milk. Sipping on her tea she decided on having toast with orange marmalade, bacon, and fried tomatoes for breakfast. Filling her plate, she licked her lips and then dug in. The first year Slytherin was slender but tall and was always ravenously hungry, so much so that her parents started bringing snacks with them whenever they went on outings and whenever they were out for meals she was constantly being told to slow down and to stop behaving so rudely. At Hogwarts though, no one was here to scold her on her eating manners, so she continued to fill her face full of food and tea until her plate was empty. Deciding she wasn’t quite full, yet she grabbed herself a cinnamon roll, poured herself another cuppa and thought to herself ‘I may as well start reading now’, she pulled out her book Biography of Uric the Oddball and began to read while sipping on her tea and nibbling on her roll.

This morning, Luke had decided to get up even earlier than usual and be at the Great Hall right when breakfast began, seven in the morning. He often got bored easily in the dormitory, so he wanted to add some interest to his morning. To try to himself making new friends, which had somehow proved difficult for him even though he was incredibly extroverted, he had decided to spin around when he entered the Great Hall and whenever he randomly stopped spinning, the table he was faced towards would be the one he sat down at.

Taking a deep breath, Luke began to spin wildly, the world becoming a blur as he ignored some of the odd stares coming from the tables. Just before he stopped spinning, Luke felt his one of his huge feet trip over the other, sending him face-first into the cold stone floor of the Great Hall. The young Hufflepuff let out a little scream as he crashed down, barely sending his hands out in time to stop his nose from breaking.

Luke groaned in embarrassment, stumbling to his feet and realizing he was facing directly towards the Slytherin table. Well, I guess I'm going there... let's hope none of them saw me, he thought, shaking his head in shame then almost skipping towards the green-cladden table.

Taking a seat near the end, he ended up next to a kind-looking girl with pale skin, light blue eyes, and flowy red hair that went just past her shoulders. She was reading a book, so Luke didn't want to be rude and decided to get up and go somehwhere else.

As he did though, his foot caught the edge of the seat and he went tumbling down again, his body hitting the floor with a loud thud. Luke was going to throw something if his clumsiness didn't stop acting up. He got to his feet once more, though instantly let out a grunt of pain as his left knee buckled under him. Seems as if he had hit that spot a little too hard, and he hoped the girl hadn't noticed his fall- though, she had looked up from her book right at him, so that seemed like too much to ask for.

Juniper had been so engrossed in her book she hadn’t notice Luke spinning around nor had she noticed him approach the Slytherin table or sit down near her. But she certainly did notice the thud from the boy falling on to the floor, looking up from her book just in time to see him get up from the floor and let out a painful grunt, with his left knee bucking, her blue eyes widened in surprise, and she exclaimed with an Irish accent “Galloping gargoyles! Are you alright? Do you need to sit down?” The young Slytherin closed her book, put it down on the table and gestured to the seat across from her, “you should sit, that tumble sounded like it hurt.” She took a good look at the boy looking for any injuries, he had messy brown hair and kind green eyes. She ignored the stares and the snickering coming from her housemates nearby. Slytherins had a nasty habit of picking on the other houses and especially younger students. The Hufflepuff boy was either very brave or very silly for approaching their table, she hadn’t decided yet. Juniper wasn’t like most in her house though, she had already made one Hufflepuff friend, she didn’t really understand why it mattered if a Slytherin was friends with other houses but alas that was how her house was most of the time, judgemental and exclusive. Sometimes she thought that the Sorting Hat had made a mistake putting her in Slytherin, but her family had wanted her in Slytherin so badly and so in turn she herself had wanted it too and now here she was like a mouse surrounded by Kneazles or more aptly... snakes.

“Galloping gargoyles! Are you alright? Do you need to sit down?”

'Yeah,' Luke thought, 'she definitely saw me'.

"Oh, thanks- sorry, even though I played football for six years before Hogwarts, ever since I've gotten here I've been strangely clumsy," he explained, returning to his seat at the Slytherin table, a bit ashamed of himself.

"And it didn't hurt too much, thanks- just my left knee a bit wonky, I suppose," Luke chuckled, pouring tea into his goblet and smiling warmly at the girl. He had no idea what had been going on with him ever since he had arrived at this school. This was truly what he had been dreaming of since he was 5 years old, yet since he was here he been much more socially awkward than usual. He had been doing pretty well on his assignments, though, his worst grade being in Potions where he just managed to get an E. Luke's favorite classes were definitely Charms, Astronomy, and Defence Against The Dark Arts... though he didn't really dislike anything except for History Of Magic. What was the point?

"Anyway, er, what's your name?" he asked politely, taking a sip of tea and nodding contently. If there was one thing you could count on Luke never passing up to oppouruntiy to have, it was tea. It didn't matter what kind- he adored the drink. "And, what are you reading? It looks nice," he added.

Juniper gave the boy a small smile as he explained himself, she had no idea what football was really although she had heard the word before, “perhaps you’re nervous to be starting a new school” she offered as an explanation for his new clumsiness. The young Slytherin watched the boy take a sip of his tea clearly enjoying it. She raised her eyebrows at his question about her name, she had completely forgotten to introduce herself, she could have face palmed herself for being so awkward, although to be fair the boy had been rather abrupt with his entrance. “My name is Juniper, Juniper Kyteler.” Her eyes brightened at his interest in her book, reading was her passion. “It’s a biography about Uric the Oddball. It’s quite fascinating actually. Normally I read fantasy adventure, but I felt like something a little bit different today and Uric is an interesting chap. Do you like to read?” Realizing that she had forgotten to ask for the boys name she quickly added “Oh, what’s your name?” while she poured herself some more tea and added some milk and sugar. Bringing the mug up to her lips she blew over the hot tea as she waited for a reply.

"Yeah, I guess it's been pretty nervewracking," Luke agreed, taking yet another sip of his tea. Man, I really hope this goes well! New friend potential right here!

The girl then said her name was Juniper. "Oh, what a nice name- like the flower, right? Was that what you were named after?"

Juniper proceeded to explain her book, Luke nodding along. "Oh, that's cool! History always bored me, I guess, but it's good that people like you know that kind of stuff, as where would we be without you guys! Oh, and erm- I don't read a lot- I don't hate it but I have pretty extreme ADHD, so it's hard for me to read for more than twenty minutes or so. I do like fantasy, however- there are some pretty interesting plots!" the young Hufflepuff added.

"My name's Luke- well, my full name is Lucas, and that's what my mom calls me, but I prefer Luke, as it's shorter and cooler. At least in my opinion. So, Juniper, do you like Quidditch? My mum's from down south, in Wimbourne- do you know it? Anyway, she forced us all to root for the Wasps my whole childhood, but I've become more of a Magpies fan," Luke explained.

“Thank you, yes like the flower. My mom had a thing with plants and trees, my siblings names are Aster and Willow”, the young redhead replied to the boys questions about her name with a little shrug.

She gave the boy a kind smile as he continued to talk while nodding here and there, “history can be dreadfully boring sometimes, but I’ve always thought the more you know the better, it’s a bit of a shocker actually that I wasn’t placed in Ravenclaw.” Her sorting had been a surprise given that she put so much importance in knowledge. As the boy mentioned his ADHD, her eyebrow rose slightly, she had heard of ADHD and knew a little bit about it but her experience with it had been limited having been very sheltered by her strict pureblood father.

When the boy got to introducing himself and brought up Quidditch, Juniper lit up. She found the Huffleboy kind and easy to talk to her. He was making it easy for an introvert like Juniper to open up a bit more than usual. “Nice to meet you Luke. I love Quidditch. I’m from Northern Ireland though and I would be kicked out of the place if I wasn’t a Ballycastle Bats fan. I do admire the Wasps and Magpies though. Do you play Quidditch? It’s really too bad they don’t let first years bring their own brooms” Juniper couldn’t help but frown a bit at the thought of her broom back home.
