It was Friday afternoon, and Colin could barely pay attention in History of Magic! He was much more interested in the history of Clair! Immediately after classes, Colin shoved everything into his satchel and bolted from the room as fast as his bare feet could carry him! There was so much to prepare for!! So rather than go for a run out in the meadows, Colin dashed as fast as he could from the first floor and all the way down all six million three hundred twenty-three thousand eight hundred two score and two steps that led down to the dungeons he called home!
"Wotcha kiddos! Got a date tonight!" he called out as he scooted between a pair of lost firsties in the corridor. "Sorry miss!" he shouted over his shoulder. An older girl gave him a withering glare as her books spilled to the floor! "Oh crud! Not Izzy --- again!" Colin just hoped that Clair's older sister wouldn't remember him from last time she ended up on the floor because of him.
As soon as he got down to the dorms, he checked on Greebo. His black cat was sprawled out on his his bed taking a surely well deserved afternoon nap. Colin slipped his wand from its sheath on his right arm and said: "Alohamora.. The lock snapped open. Carefully he lifted the lit a wee bit. The bit of string that he had epoximised to the inside of his trunk was intact. Good. No marauding invaders had been rummaging around inside!
Colin's trunk contained an interesting assortment of objects. Mostly school related, but also lots of personal stuff. First and foremost was the dress he'd be wearing to the Ball! Nothing fancy, really, just a brown plaid dress to go with Clair's own! Plus a somewhat pouffy orangey-brown button down shirt. Colin tossed them onto his bed. Greebo gave him an annoyed yowl for disturbing his nap! He rubbed the cat between his ears, and Greebo hopped down into the trunk to explore. He made a mental note to make absolutely certain he did all his buttons up properly!
Last to come out was the tatty copy of Witch Weekly that had pictures of the cool hairstyle he wanted to try out and also a bottle of cologne. He'd never tried cologne before. Colin thought about it for a moment. Come to think on it, he'd never even heard of cologne before! But apparently this stuff, Wolves of the Wildlands, was supposed to "drive witches, wizards, wixen, and all other magical people absolutely WILD for the WOLF in their lives!!!"
Hey! It had three exclamation marks! It must be good! Colin opened the opened the bottle carefully and sniffed at it delicately. Mostly it smelled of mint and grass and herbs and alcohol. There were some other familiar smells in there too. Doggy smells? Something! Greebo rested his paws on the edge of the trunk and sniffed too. He began purring. He rubbed his face against the neck of the bottle. Whatever was in this stuff, Greebo approved, and was good enough for Colin!
"Alright lad!" he said to the cat, picking him up and putting him back onto the bed. Colin set the string and lowered the lid carefully. "Epoximise." The latches closed with satisfying snaps. "Colloportus" The lock snapped to with a very satisfying CLACK! Colin smiled. He loved magic! "Well, lad! We're off to the Abandoned Toilets! Where many an adventure gets its start!"
And with that, Colin shoved everything into his satchel, tucked his wand back into its sheath and let Greebo hop onto his shoulder. And then they were off!
To be continued...

A HAIRY SITUATION!

Colin dashed up to the abandoned toilets with Greebo chasing along behind! His bare feet knew almost ever square inch of the main parts of the castle by now and even blindfolded, Colin could find his way to the abandoned toilets! It was a wonder, he thought, how so many adventures did indeed start or happen in this broken down old space. The door was open a crack and he could hear no sounds from within. He slid his wand out just in case, as he shoved the door open. "Have at you foul fiends sent by the Liche King!" he cried. He flourished his wand deftly. "HAHAH! Ye think ye can stand against me? Sir Colin and the brave midnight black Greebeaux le!?"
No other students were in the place, unless his mere presence had terrified them into petrified silence! "Right! Run away dark liches and evil werewolfians! Ye shall never breach the walls of this bathroom and live to tell the tale!" Colin gave the door a shove with his left hip and closed with a sharp bang and click. Colin nodded in satisfaction. He did not notice that the door was now shoved totally closed!
He plunked his satchel down on one of the sinks and undressed. Greebo explored the disused cubicles. Cobwebs hung in several, and bits of glitter decorated one, down at the end. Colin smiled at the memory of finding Kim and Monica in here, mid prank preparation! Colin checked himself in the mirror and slipped his wand out of its sheath again. This time, he would try some real magic! He'd be trying crinus muto today --- a transfiguration that would alter his hair style, and possibly colour a bit!
He'd asked Liam to come and help him, but Colin was eager to get started, so he got his old transfiguation book out of his satchel and opened it's well worn pages up to the right spot. Colin read through the steps again and got his wand ready. He looked at himself in the mirror. His naturally long hair fell to his waist, and his thin braid was now to his chest. He could see all of his scars. Wolf fangs, claws, hag dolls, menacing trees, magical burns, marks from fights and duels going all the way back to when he was ten!
Colin smiled wistfully.
"Right laddie, let's do this!" Colin smiled at himself. It was so much like smiling at Liam! His reflection even looked right in the mirror --- his own birthmark was to the left of his breastbone, whilst Liam's was to the right. His wand motions were dead on, Colin was sure, as he intoned "Crinus muto!"
Colin's eyes widened. Colin gasped!!
"OH CRAP CRAP CRAP!!!" Colin had forgotten to touch his wand to his own hair! He'd pointed it at Mirror Colin in stead! "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Colin's hair did begin to change! But --- it's colors changed into all sorts of reds and greens and blues and began to lengthen! Quickly!!
"YEEEEEEP!!" Colin squeaked as his hair got out of control!

A HAIRY SITUATION!

BANG! BANG! BANG!
Heavy knocks rattled the door!
Colin stepped back in surprise!
"YEEEEEK!" Colin tripped in his own hair! It must have been twenty feet long! He flopped over, trying to stand up again! Muffled sounds came from out in the corridor! Colin finally managed to stand up only to hear the voices outside again. "WHAT!?" He put his ear up against the key hole. "I can't hear ---! Stand? Where ---?"
BAMMM!!
The door flew open, shoving Colin and about forty feet of luxurious blond hair back towards the cubicles! "Oof! What---!?" There was so much hair in the small space that there wasn't enough room in the cubicle for both Colin and Colin's hair! It buffeted him like a a huge overstuffed throw pillow and cast him back towards the door! "Liam!?" Well, that solved the mystery of one voice!
The other boy caught Colin and got him upright again. CLICK! The door shut again.
"Liam! Help me! I---!"
"Caillean!? Wh--- Why are ye naked lad? I thought ye had a dress and all?"
"Liam!! Thank God ye're here! My hair! I ---!"
Colin heard another voice, by the door. "Cail! And he's not alone! What's all this hair anyway?" Ciarán. Second mystery solved! His little sister stepped into view. "Why are ye nak---" The girl didn't even finish her question. She shook her head. "I'm not even going to ask..." She rolled her eyes at Colin.
"Ci! LIAM! My ---!"
"Calm down lad!"
"Calm ---!? But my hair! I ---!" Colin looked down. "It's growing from MY CHEST!!"
Liam shook his head. "That's no the only place it's growing from lad!"
Colin danced about anxiously. "What will Clair think! She's not going to want to go with me like this!"
"I don't know Cail! You look a proper wolf boy now!" Ciarán said. She'd managed to find Colin's dress.
Liam laughed! "I'll fetch a leash, Cail! Clair can take ye for walkies!"
"LIAM!!! THAT'S NOT HELPING!"
"Where's yer wand Cail? Just stop the spell!" Ciarán exclaimed.
"I --- I can't find it! I must have dropped it!"
"Och. A wizard wi no wand is no wizard!"
"LIAAMMM!!!"
Liam kept laughing as Colin turned into tall skinny and pale pygmy puff. All that could be seen were two scared bright green eyes peeking through ever expanding bangs! "Ye should have waited for us Cail! Ye know that magic like this can backfire --- with hair raising consequences!" Ciarán giggled. Colin groaned.
Colin's hair must have been five hundred feet long by now! There was no sign of the door or the windows or the cubicles! Just a mound of Colin's hair! Ciarán reached into the mound and tried to push the hair out of Colin's face. The mirth left her face when she saw how scared Colin looked. She turned to Liam, so he could see too. "We can't let him suffer like this, right?"

A HAIRY SITUATION!

Liam shook his head slowly, his finger on his lip as if considering a weighty matter for judgement. "No, lass, twouldn't be right to let the poor wolfy suffer this way. I say we put him out of his misery!" He winked at Ciarán.
"WHAT!?"
"Oo! Aye, that sounds like a brilliant plan!" Ci said with considerable enthusiasm. "What shall we do then?"
"Wait!"
Liam got out his wand. Colin's eyes widened. Ciarán smirked. Colin's hair continued to grow. "Hm. This requires a very strong spell, Ci. What do you think?"
"Reparifarge!" cried Colin from somewhere deep in the billowy cloud of expanding hair.
"Um... I think it's to do with transfiguration, right?" said Ciarán with a return wink to her older brother.
"Aye! A transfiguration! But I wonder what we can use to sort of..." began Liam, thoroughly enjoying this moment of fraternal torture.
"Reparifarge! Liam!" squeaked Colin. "Me hair! It's pushing me down!"
"A sort of anti-transfiguration, right Liam?" Ciarán smiled broadly.
"Ah! I believe you're right Ci! Can you think of ..."
"REPARIFARGE! REPARIFARGE!" came the muffled, high pitched shouting from some distant corner of the room.
"Oh! I know it! Reparifarge! It's the untransfiguration spell!" said Ciarán, very proud to be of help, but also enjoying how Liam was stretching out the agony for Colin. "Don't worry Caileann! We'll get ye out of this!"
"Right. On three..."
"Hurry up! Cast the spell! It's pushing me into the toilet! I'm sure Myrtle won't like that!" cried Colin. He moaned. "She'll turn me into a ghost for sure!"
Together they cast the spell and the magic took hold of the transfigured hairy menace and ate away at it with surprising rapidity! It looked as if sparks or lightning flew along the strands of magically enhanced hair in both directions! With little more than a soft crinkly sound, all the extra long pale hair was gone. Liam found Colin's wand shoved into the furthest corner of the space. "It looks like your hair had something against ye Cail! Ye had no chance of finding yer wand lad! Look! It's in a the crack between the floor and the wall!"
Ciarán walked over to check out the toilet cubicles. She found Colin in the very last one. Of course, he was naked and stuffed right into the bowl. "I found him Liam! He was right! It pushed him right into the toilet!" Liam came over to inspect the damage and began laughing at the position his twin's hair had put him in. Ciarán tisked just like their mother. "All this nonsense over a girl! Och. Boys are so strange!"
Colin managed at last to pull himself upright and out of the toilet itself. He snagged his wand from Liam's grasp and said: "Scourgify!" Narrowing his eyes slightly at the pair of troublesome siblings, Colin got his clothes from Ciarán and shoved between them. He turned back and said: "This is not just any lass, Ci! This is all for Clair Fernandez!!" As if the name itself were magical Colin's formerly unsettled mood instantly changed. He smiled and tossed the bundle in the air! He caught it deftly and said her name again as if they were the two most important words in the English or Scottish languages: "CLAIR FERNANDEZ! AAWWOOOO!"
Ciarán snorted. Liam shook his head gently. Colin turned and with his head bopping, he pranced over towards the sinks. There he got dressed. "There's not much to this outfit, really. The kilt's a little long, mind."
"That's because it's a dress, silly boy!" said Ciarán, fixing up his shirt neatly. "It's supposed to be long."
"Alright, then Cail. Let's see yer hair done properly this time," said Liam with smirk and a mock concerned raising of his eyebrow.
Colin let out a breath. "Whoa. Right. Hair." He cleared his throat and thought about the transfiguration again. He made sure to touch the tip of his wand to his own hair this time, rather than point it at Mirror Colin's hair! "Crinus muto!" he said. This time the magic did what Colin had envisioned: a short style in iridescent green and black, with a short braid.
"What do you think!?" Colin said as he turned to show Liam and Ciarán. He hoped Clair would love it!
