High above the school's ground floors, contesting the altitude of the Ravenclaw Common rooms, and preceded by a spiral staircase which led up to the West Tower, is a perfectly circular room filled with feathers, regurgitated skeletons of previous mouse and vole meals, and poop-spattered stones and straw. This is the residence of all Hogwarts' students, professors, and school owls. Certainly not the most luxurious location in Hogwarts, but a quaint and quiet one, ideal for meditating and being the first to smell the scents of a sunrise or the changes of a season. Drafty and often cold because of the lack of glass, though there were fanciful outlines of a window's old sills and gothic metal décor, the lack of windows reflects the necessity for easy owl access and exit. When climbing the spiral stairs up to the perch during winter, one must keep an eye out for ice, and during the summer, one must be sure to avoid fresh owl droppings mixed in with soft carcasses of rodents.

The wizarding version of a Muggle post office, owls, are the most respected and the fastest messengers of the magical folk, easily five times more efficient than a normal human postman. Students and professors alike may frequent this lofty and natural area to send and receive letters from family, work, and other important members in their lives while being surrounded by downy feathers. Keeping to the tradition of magic-users as far back as the castle's founding, and neatly avoiding the lack of technology in the school, using an owl as a messenger keeps old traditions alive, while also permitting students to interact with creatures even before their Care of Magical Creatures classes.
There are three main levels to the Owlery. The first level is the landing in which a student would first come in. The door over their head depicts an image of a small screech owl locking talons with an eagle owl with the inscription 'Non magnitudem creaturae, at magnitudem cordis pollet', which means 'Not the size of the creature, but the size of the heart'. Within, there is a large birdbath which takes up most of the center of the room. Its water is generally cleaner than what you would think, even with owls taking baths, pooping in it, and drinking from it. It is, in fact, the birdbath on the fourth level, which is the dirtiest and the most frequented. Its water is usually replaced every week.
The middle two platforms make up of owl nests, occasionally eggs if any owl finds a mate, and old remains of prey, but on the fourth floor on the final platform, after taking a final spiral staircase, there is an overlooking terrace with a pair of barn owl statues on each corner of the balustrade that permits a person standing upon it to look out at the sunrise.

What is this forum used for?
