A hanging chill settled over the Great Lake, the tranquil site where students of every age come to take in the magnificent view of the never-ending landscape far beyond. It was a beautiful evening. The sun was slowly making its descent and cast glowing hues of orange onto the lake that was evidently iced over.

Wrapped up in layers of thick fabric, Jam scuttled over to the edge of the lake, bending over just to slightly knock on the frozen water. The girl pouted as she observed the ice thoughtfully. It seemed sturdy enough, but how was she supposed to tell? She had no prior experience ice skating in her hometown, not to mention in the magical realm. Who knows how different lakes could be when magic is involved? Probably not that different, but there was no harm in being careful.

The girl had given herself a pep talk on the walk to her destination, telling herself that she should try new things. The weather was absolutely perfect for gliding around on the ice, given that, well, she learnt how to do it. It would be terrible for her to miss such a wonderful opportunity to learn a new skill, and she knew she would regret it if she didn’t even do so much as try.

So there she stood, looking like a human snowball from the thick jackets she was sporting, and peering onto her reflection on the ice. It was quite clear from her face how deep she was in thought as she contemplated her situation. To skate or not to skate? The ultimate question that clouded her mind.

“How hard could it be, really?” Jam started to stand up, blowing a stray strand of her brown locks out of her face, “I’ve done rollerblading back home, it can’t be too different, can it?” The girl was talking to herself at this point, trying to regain her confidence now that she was face to face with the icy challenge lying in front of her. It would definitely seem silly to anyone else, but she moved her feet an inch closer to the ice. Progress!

Despite staring at the reflective surface for several long minutes, the girl was nowhere near starting. “Argh!” Jam plopped onto the snow into a sitting position in frustration. What she needed was a mentor, someone who had experience and could guide her through the basics, at the very least. The Ravenclaw girl looked around, hoping to spot at least one friendly face that seemed to know what they were doing.

Clementine pushed through the heavy wooden doors leading to the Great Lake, huffing from the exertion. A blast of frosty wind briefly stopped her in her tracks before she trudged on at a brisk pace. The sound of steady crunching of snow under her boots tickled her brain just right, each footstep leaving a foot-shaped indent trailing behind her. They were the beginnings of an adventure.

The Slytherin happily made her way towards the body of water- now turned a body of ice with the dropping temperatures of winter. They must have shed their coats by now... she mused, thinking of the long-earred mammals often seen hopping about in the summer. A striped green scarf enveloped her upper torso, school robes and a woolen sweater inside keeping her body warm. With her face exposed, however, the chilly wind brought out a rosy tint to her cheeks and nose.

"Too tiny... nope, too heavy..." the girl whispered, back hunched over before her fingers brushed against a stone the size of her palm, "Ah, le perfecto!

From the moment Professor Fresnel had dismissed the Charms class, an idea had formed in her mind, one that the first-year just had to test. Within the shining waters of the lake lay a multitude of aquatic creatures, now trapped under the shimmering frozen surface. Did they hibernate? Could they break through the ice? Are the grindylows pestering the merfolk out of boredom?

Taking a tentative step onto the glassy floor, she stuck out one boot in front of the other. She had managed to scoot a few meters towards the center of the lake. Her breath caught in her throat when her foot shot out from beneath her, but she quickly regained her balance. Alrighty, this seems far enough!

In one smooth motion, Clementine tossed the stone into the air, watching it clatter towards the middle. Just then, the Slytherin saw a ball of warm coats plopped not too far away in the snow.

"Hey, wait!!" she hollered, "I'm checking to see if the ice is thinning!" Her voice sounded faint in the wind, so she began unwrapping her scarf. After quite the struggle, she waved it in the air, letting it flap around in hopes of getting the figure's attention.

Ears perking up at the holler of another student, Jam whipped her head around. She caught sight of a frantic figure waving her scarf above her head. The Ravenclaw girl wasn’t exactly able to make out what the other person said, but it seemed important enough for her to get up and head towards the stranger’s direction.

Waddling towards the owner of the voice, Jam created little footprints on the snow, leaving a trail of dents behind her. The girl stuck her hands into her pockets to warm them, sniffling through her already red nose. As she closed the gap between her and the other girl, Jam widened her eyes in curiosity.

It was a miracle for her to find someone so quickly after hoping for a mentor, it was only a matter of time before she found out if the blonde girl actually knew how to ice skate. Jam had to pull herself back from getting overly excited about a potential teacher, but it was evident on her face that she was expecting more.

“Um, I couldn’t really hear what you were yelling earlier, but it sounded important so, here I am!” Jam shrugged her shoulders with an awkward smile. “I’m Jam, and I’m from Ravenclaw. It’s nice to meet you!” The brunette pulled one hand out of her pocket, extending it towards the other girl.

“I know we just met and everything, but I was wondering if you, um, knew how to ice skate?” Jam asked, completely ignoring every voice in her to not rush into it. “The reason I was hanging around the edge of the lake was ‘cause I reallyreally wanted to learn! It’s just I don’t know how to start and if you could teach me that would be great.” The girl explained, but got worried that she was asking too much of someone she had just met.

“But you don’t need to if you don’t want to! That would be fine too.” She added quickly, shaking her head with lifted eyebrows. Still, there was a hopeful expression plastered on her face, one that she couldn’t conceal even if she wanted to.
