Blood Status
On Hogwarts.io, we have four blood status options on user profiles, and the option of halfbreed for those who are part-human. Please bear in mind that these blood statuses are very much societal constructs. No one is truly muggleborn or pureblood if you go back far enough. Everyone has magical and muggle heritage somewhere, but some families have been diluted enough to claim a certain heritage. It is common in society to define one's family by the latest known generations of your family, which is how muggleborns come to be (their magical heritage is so far back it is forgotten) and purebloods (where their muggle heritage is so far back it is forgotten or buried). We are choosing not to define an exact number of generations needed to qualify for each as it would require family trees to be created for each character and we do not want to have to track this for every character, but we are expecting you to know your blood status and recent family history. So the following blood statuses are based off recent known history of families.
Muggle + Muggle = Muggleborn
Magic + Muggle = Halfblood
Magic + Magic = Halfblood/Wizardborn/Pureblood*

*the differences between these three are explained below
  • Muggleborn
    • This means your character was born to two Muggles.
  • Half-blood
    • This means your character was born to at least one Magical parent. The other parent may be a muggle or a wizard with a Muggle parent (eg Muggleborn), meaning you have clear Muggle heritage. Those who identify as halfblood (as opposed to Wizardborn below) have been raised with knowledge of or experience with the muggle world.
  • Wizardborn
    • This option is unique to H.io and does not have an official canon definition. The definition on H.io means that your character is born to two magical parents, but the family has traceable Muggle heritage (somewhere in the last couple of generations). This means a wizardborn is a halfblood, but the unique aspect here is that by choosing wizardborn, you are saying your character was raised in a completely magical household with little to no contact with the Muggle world. This is why Wizardborn characters cannot take the Muggle Condition ability.
  • Pureblood
    • This means your character has no traceable Muggle heritage for several generations. On H.io we do have a suspension of realism in regards to the number of pureblood families there are. We do not allow relation to the Sacred 28 families from canon, but we do allow the creation of other pureblood bloodlines so users can write pureblood characters.
  • Half-breed
    • This option means your character has part-human heritage and part-being heritage. This is for part-giants, part-veela, part-goblins and dhampirs (including those who were turned). After approval as one of these, your blood status will be manually changed to half-breed. You may need to owl an admin if you are approved and your blood status was not updated.
What about Squib parents?
A squib is the result of at least one magical parent, meaning they are halfblood/wizardborn/pureblood when using societal blood status terms. They would qualify as "Magic" in the chart at the top of this post since they cannot produce a muggleborn wizard. They can produce Halfbloods, Wizardborns or Purebloods depending on their heritage and the family they come from. If they have a nonmagical child with a Muggle, that child could be a Squib or a Muggle depending on how closely associated with magical society/if they are even aware of their magical heritage (eg a Squib who is living in the Muggle world has a child with a Muggle and passes away before telling them about their heritage. That child would likely be documented as a Muggle because they have no magic and no known ties to a magical family. But if their parent was a Pureblood Squib and the child is aware of the magical world, they might be considered a second-generation Squib still connected to their magical heritage. Considering we don't have Squib characters on H.io this information is only provided for heritage purposes).

What if my character's parents died and they were adopted by parents of a different blood status?
On H.io, we are looking for the blood status on your profile to be accurate. If your character is a Muggleborn, they would have been placed into the foster system of the Muggle world and thus raised by Muggles (obviously there is exception to if your character is adopted by a distantly magical relative etc, but they would still have a Muggleborn blood status). If your character had a known magical parent at the time of being orphaned, they would be placed in the Ministry of Magic's version of a foster system and thus placed with a magical family for the sake of the Statute of Secrecy being maintained. Either way, your blood status is that of your character's birth. Muggleborns remain Muggleborns, a Half-blood adopted by a Pureblood family is still a Half-blood, but they would likely identify as Wizardborn if they were born to two magical parents and because they grew up completely in the wizarding world.

What if I want to keep my character's heritage a secret? What if they were an affair baby?
This sort of plotline must be indexed during your initial character creation so that they will have the correct bloodstatus, even if your character doesn't know it. If your character is born into a Pureblood family but the mother had an affair with a Muggle, they would need to have the Halfblood blood status. However, you can RP them telling people they are pureblood for years and have them IC realize their blood status later. We won't approve different parent plotlines after initial indexing if it would change your character's blood status. An affair baby is not a way to get the Muggle Condition ability because of a loophole.

Can I change my blood status?
No. The only exception is if you were validated (sorted) with the wrong understanding of blood status, then during your indexing, you realize your character is the wrong blood status. We would allow a one-time blood status change at this time.
