A Quest for Knowledge
The elves continued to carry on about the dust-covered books. Ash had never seen such care for something. That’s not exactly true. Ash had seen many merchants back in Hogsmeade who cared for their goods with devotion as great.
Ash wondered why Henry hadn’t followed suit with the note.
“Hen, are we sure we’re okay with the elves seeing these notes?”
Given the agony the elves were in, Ash wondered if knowing that someone had left notes in the books would send the elves over the edge.
The message on the notes had not escaped Ash’s mind, “What you are to be, you are now becoming.” Simple, yet complex. Plain, yet profound.
On their own, without the context in which the boys had obtained the notes, such an inspirational message may have left the boys contemplative about their upcoming time at Hogwarts. If the words had been spoken by the Headmaster in the Great Hall or one of his teachers or the Head of the Ravenclaw House, the boys would have embraced the words wholeheartedly. But, to have fallen from two books that from what they could make from the elves’ lament were mistreated, the boys had reason to suspect something more than a random occurance.
Were Hen and I at the wrong place at the wrong time? Were Hen and I the intended recipients of these notes?
Ash turned his back in an effort to make it difficult for the elves to hear him speak to Hen:
“What do you think? Plan A: We quietly make our way out of here and carry on back in the Common Room. Plan B: We see if we can get the attention of these elves and ask them. Or, Plan C: We try to track down the Librarian. Do we even know who the Librarian is?”
Ash wondered why Henry hadn’t followed suit with the note.

A Quest for Knowledge
Henry had been pulled from his thoughts with the house elves' lamenting. He could understand their feelings. Books deserved to be treated with respect so that future people could enjoy the experience of reading it, of feeling the pages between their fingers and the sound of crinkling paper, the smell of the musty, loved pages, being transported into a world so different from one's own. If it wasn't evident, Henry never got over the burning of the Library of Alexandria and the massive loss of stories and information kept there.
"Huh?"
Henry's attention was drawn back to Ash. What he had been implying had finally clicked in his head. He folded the paper neatly, making sure each corner and edge lined up, before tucking it in his pocket carefully.
"I still think they could've helped us, but I guess they're too distracted with the books. The librarian might be able to help, but I think they're busy. Which means we're on our own for this. Let's head back to the common room and see if we can do a bit of digging on these notes."
Henry copied down a list of every book he had grabbed off the shelf, underlining the two the notes had come from, and placed them, one by one, back on their respective shelves. He then grabbed a couple anthologies of charms and spells they could use to analyze the notes and gestured for Ash to follow suit.
