Sorting Ceremony 2023-2024

Minnie had never had more fear in her entire life. She had just gotten off the train and was shivering from her sisters remark of, "I can't be there as I will be in detention for unruliness on the train. But I will know if you're not Slytherin. I don't want a stain on our legacy." And now she was shivering in the cold outside, not wanting to go to school. She eventually moved and soon was in school.

"I need to be Slytherin. My family has always loved me, but I will be treated terribly if I'm not a Slytherin. Imagine if I was in Hufflepuff." She muttered to herself to clear her nerves.

"Freaky pure-blood." A kid next to her muttered. She turned bright red and moved away from the kid.

Why do I have to be sorted? I hope it goes well. Oh no. They're going to call my name soon. "Ginger newts this is bad." But she didn't have time to panic anymore. Her name was about to be called.

"Duke, Minnie." She was called up to the hat. Minnie nervously walked up. I hope this goes well. I really can't have this go badly.

"Hello Minnie. I see I have another Duke to sort." The sorting hat said in her head. "I see that there are a lot of emotions about today. Mostly fear and excitement. A few other strange ones. You have a lot of qualities that count for Ravenclaw." Minnie tensed. Please not Ravenclaw! I cannot be in Ravenclaw! She thought fiercely to the hat.

"I don't have Ravenclaw traits. Please sorting hat." I muttered desperately.

"I wasn't finished." The hat tutted inside my head. "You like telling people facts, but you have a touch of bravery for all the things you want to do here. That would be Gryffindor. Now, you have secrets that you hide inside your head, that would make you Slytherin. You don't really find rules as necessary as most, only rules about safety are fine to you. And you are incredibly loyal. That is Hufflepuff. This is quite the situation. But I think I know the answer." I clenched the hat, scared at what the answer was. "You will be HUFFLEPUFF!" The hat shouted out the last word.

No. I can't be. Minnie thought as she numbly stepped off the podium. Her entire family was Slytherin. She had to be Slytherin. If not Slytherin, be brave and be Gryffindor. But not the shameful Hufflepuff. This can't be happening. I belong in noble Slytherin, not cowardly Hufflepuff. She almost cried, but managed to hold it in. This was a terrible house table. And she was heading right towards it.

I don't break the rules, I expand them for my need.

Sorting Ceremony 2023-2024
Theodore was often told by his parents that he had an overactive imagination. Getting lost in his own thoughts and ideas and forgetting his surroundings was more than easy for him. After all, he spent most of his time reading or thinking about how he was going to get his hands on a real dragon one day. At times, his fantasies were so realistic that he had the feeling that he was actually in the middle of them. For example, he once imagined that he had discovered a cave with a sleeping dragon. The idea was so real that he could almost feel the dampness of the cave on his own skin, hear the calm breathing of the monster, and see the dragon as he had seen it in the photograph.

That's why so many scenarios had come to Theo's mind when his older cousin Henry had told him that the Sorting Ceremony would be so much fun. Theo pestered his cousin, prying and asking relentlessly what the Sorting Ceremony was going to be like. Henry, with a deadly serious expression on his face, explained: "As soon as the first years enter the Great Hall, the teachers will divide them into groups, and they will fight with the giant squid one by one. Depending on how they defeat this octopus, they will be assigned to their faculty." So when Theo sets foot in the Great Hall for the first time, he expects to find a giant octopus swarming somewhere near the teachers' desks, with a hostile expression on its face, flinging tentacles around, ready to fill its ever-hungry stomach.

Instead, a huge room full of chattering students sitting at four desks and an enchanted ceiling with floating candles opens up before him. Not a single giant octopus in sight. Relieved, Theo steps inside with a lighter heart, but his mind still races: 'Henry, if I see you, I'll send the octopus at you!' So Theo follows the crowd until he stands in the middle of the hall. As he looks at the faces of his future classmates, he sees the corresponding expressions on their faces. Uncertainty, fear, and anticipation. And then he is told the true sorting procedure - an old hat will be placed on his head, and he will be sorted into the right house. Theo furrows his brows a little. Is a tattered old hat really going to tell him his future? How is it supposed to know what makes Theo stand out from the crowd and where he doesn't fit in at all on the other side? No one else seems able to question the Sorting Hat's competence, so he doesn't say a word.

The First-years are called by their name, and after a moment, Theo hears, "Abernathy, Theodore!" This snaps him out of his deep thoughts, and he begins to push his way through the others. It wasn't until he was sitting in a chair in front of everyone that he realized his knees were shaking. He remembered that the whole school was watching. He straightens up, stretches, and looks ostentatiously calm, but inside he can still feel the stress. Then The Sorting Hat lands on his head, and it begins to speak. Theodore jerks a little like a frightened bird. He mentally curses Henry once again for not telling him about this, followed immediately by his parents, who thought it would be a great idea to just let their son wallow in it.

"Are you disappointed that I'm not a giant squid?" echoes through Theodore's head.

"I'm not. It's easier this way. I can't practically use the spells yet, even though I know the theory behind them," Theo replies.

"Hm, I can see that you can easily find the simplest path."

"Why should I make it more difficult for myself?" Theo objects.

"Hm, for someone who is loved so much by his parents, you still feel very lonely. You grew up in a big mansion with a four-legged friend and ghosts for peers. You're desperate to make new friends, to start somewhere where you really belong. That's why you'd fit right in with Hufflepuff. You'd never be alone, and the house would become your second family. But on the other hand..." The Sorting Hat pauses, probably lost in its thoughts, "I can see that you're not one of those people who could back down, and you'd rather stubbornly insist on your own way. You could have an argument, even a scuffle, with your friend. It's not very Hufflepuff of you."

"But only if I have proof that I am right!" Theodore protests.

The Sorting Hat continues its monologue, "Apart from wanting to belong, I also feel a thirst to learn, discover, and try things out on your own skin. I wonder if you'll ever get to pet a dragon, Theodore! Your dreams could be called daring, but again, not enough to get you into Gryffindor. You'd be in threat of falling from a great height almost every day there."

Theodore slumps in the chair, his hands gripping the edge as if he really is in danger of falling to his death.

"You have a keen mind, a taste for exploration. That's why I'm sending you to a House where others also thirst for knowledge. Perhaps there you will learn to spread your wings and make your dreams come true. RAVENCLAW!" The Sorting Hat shouts.

Theodore jumps up from his chair, blinking, and turns his head towards the table where the blue-robed students are sitting. An instant smile appears on his face. He's made it to the faculty, which brings up what he was relentlessly chastised for at home. Surely, if he moves to the library for an indefinite period, none of his new classmates will object. Maybe after a long time, he won't feel lonely anymore. Satisfied, he moves to meet his new family.

Inara waited patiently in line with the other first years. As she waited, she studied the 4 house tables. Which one will I be? She wondered. Inara was a Half-Blood, so her Dad was a muggle and her mom.. never told her what house she was in so she didn't know what to expect. The Gryffindors were supposed to be brave, she recalled. She didn't think she would be a Gryffindor, she was the quietest person she knew. Slytherins are cunning, she thought. She didn't think she was cunning. That leaves Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw... Which one will I be? I know I'm Loyal, which would make me a Hufflepuff, but I really like reading and studying too.... She pondered this for a while until she heard the sorting hat burst into song. She listend intently, and she realized she was right on remembering the traits. She watched the other students get sorted first, her last name is Yang so she would probably be close to the end. When it was her turn, she walked up to the stool, and she put the sorting hat over her head..

She heard a small voice in her head... the sorting hat!

Ah... Miss Yang, I see... You are very Loyal and Hardworking .... But very intelligent and ambitious too! so where shall I put you? The hat thought about this for a few seconds then shouted, RAVENCLAW!!!!!

Inara smiled, she was happy about this. Blue was her favorite color after all, and Ravenclaw seemed really cool.

She walked over to the Ravenclaw table and sat down, she hoped she would make a lot of new friends!

The long line of first years scared Quinn. Her mum had told her little about the way the sorting happened. Please be in Ravenclaw. Quinn thought. If not Ravenclaw then Slytherin. Quinn hoped. Quinn knew that her mum had been in Ravenclaw and that her mum's brother had been in Slytherin. There parents had been in Ravenclaw and there parents in Slytherin. Quinn really hoped that they wouldn't break the tradition.

A weird hat was introduced by the head master. It started to sing a ver odd song in Quinn's opinion. Quinn wondered how the hat had gotten "brains put into me" When the song was over the hall erupted into cheering Quinn clapped to but she wondered why. The hat was put down and a teacher started calling names of students. Last name of A first. That can't be a coincedince. Quinn worried as the "A" names began to turn to be until,
"Brook, Quinn" Quinn forced her legs to move towards the front of the hall. The last thing she saw before the hat dropped over her eyes was the entire hall staring at her.

"Dear me, this mind sure has a lot going on in it. Well were to put you." Quinn relized that the hat was in her head. Please not huffelpuff. Quinn thought or really asked, she didn't quite understand how the hat thing worked.
"Not huffelpuff. Certainly not, your traits are not ones that would suit that house well. Hmm this is a tough one. There is a certain knack of bravery that would make gryffendors proud but there is cunning, oh yes there's cunning and a love of making friends." Quinn smiled. Slytherin would be fine. The hat continued.
"Oh my, what's this. I don't usually see this in Brook's. A love for homework? Really? Wow a great joy for learning and books. Also a great deal of smarts. Well this changes things doesn't it. Instead of Slytherin better be-RAVENCLAW"

Quinn squeeled with delight.
"oh mo dhia, sea!" (Oh my gosh, yes! in Irish) Quinn lept up from the seat and hurried over to the Ravenclaw table. What a great start to the day. Quinn thought.

Ash could bet anyone could tell she was nervous with a small glance. A part of her brain was begging for her name not to be called while the other was overexcited for her name to be called. Anyway, she was there, at the Hogwarts Sorting Ceremony, it felt surreal, but surely it wasn't.

There was a weird, dusty hat placed on a stool ahead. It oddly looked cool to Ash, and what was more interesting was that it sang a song before the sorting began! How? Was it- the hat alive?
Students standing in the queue were being called up one by one by their names to sit on the stool while placing the hat on their heads.
As the Headmaster said, it'd look into your heart and brain and tell your house based on your true characteristics.

As the Sorting Hat completed its song, telling a little about the houses, Ash got a feeling that she'd get Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, or maybe not, it was confusing.

"Brown, Ash," her name was called all of a sudden. Ash gulped and walked forward, feeling her goosebumps rising to its fullest. She sat on the stool and the hat was placed on her head which covered more than half of her face like the other first years.

"Hmm..."she heard a voice which didn't come from outside but from inside the hat. "Pretty tricky, and confusing. You're cunning, super cunning like a Slytherin. But you're quick-witted just like a Ravenclaw."Ash didn't have a biased choice regarding which house she wanted, but still what she wished was to be a good student and a great witch.
"You can sometimes be so daring, even arrogant, like a Gryffindor. But, but, but, loyality. Loyality is what you got the most! I bet you'll never ever betray someone- so, Hufflepuff? Well, you can make a great Gryffindor. What do you think?"
"I dunno," Ash thought. "You don't know? Let me decide then. If not Gryffindor, better be HULLFEPUFF!"

The Sorting Hat shouted its last word out, and Ash headed towards the Hufflepuff table, grinning, excited for everything that was going to happen for the rest of the year- or for the rest of the other six years.

It was finally the time for the train to arrive at Hogwarts. Mal feel like it was all just a dream seeing Hogwarts this close. She then get out of her train compartments and bring her luggage out. She is ordered to leave her luggage at the stair, but she's afraid that some of her things may be stollen so she place a locking charms on her luggage. She then got navigated to the Great Hall where the new student will be sorted into their new house. All of the upper-year are staring at the new student so intensely which makes some of them more nervous, especially Mallory, she seems to be attracting attention by covering her head with a hood, but she doesn't care about them. She knows that house is a really important thing in Hogwarts, but she didn't feel nervous about it because she doesn't care about what house she got, as long as she can study well then its all great. They then listened to the Headmasters speech, and the sorting ceremony finally began, unexpectedly she was called first! Well that really surprised her, but she doesn't like wasting time and finally go up and sit there being the center of attention. But before the hat got placed in her head the professors suddenly stop and asked "why are you wearing a hood, may i ask?". Mal said "well its for protection, sir". The Professor reply "well you certaintly doesn't need a protection in Hogwarts Mal, don't worry. And in fact the sorting hat will work to the fullest if placed right on your head". Hearing that Mallory can't make up an excuse anymore and finally decided to show them what her hair look like "well okay sir.... but don't be too surprised". She then slowly lower her hood and how surprised everyone is by her hair colour, at first everyone is shocked, then confused, then they find it funny, and eventually they laugh together. Hearing that Mal thought in her mind "I shouldn't have done this, and i can't even fix it! The potion I made is too strong!". The professors said "QUITE! PLEASE!". Everyone suddenly stop laughing. "Now please, let us continue". She then put the sorting hat on my head. The sorting hat then said something "Hmm lets see...Hoho....quite an intresting one right at the start, you're quite smart and talented for your peers although quite clumsy as well I see, judging by your hair". "Oh Please...stop with the hair I know already". "Yes, Yes. Your loyal too...but only to does who you deemed as worthy for that". "Haaa....quite a brave act you got there, running away from home, what a reckless decision, but brilliant!". "I see you have a weakness...but your sure to overcome it in the near future, what an ambitious girl you are. Lastly which house do you have in mind?". "Well to be completely honest, I don't care just give me a house where I will be the best". "Is that so? Then.....Slytherin!". Then the crowd starts clapping. I got up and let the other new student come forward. Slytherin huh? Well I don't hate it. Lets just see what the future hold for me.

The minute Lottie stepped into the Great Hall, she felt a new feeling enter into her system and scramble around in her gut. Anticipation. Not an entirely new sensation, but she had never felt it to this extent. It gnawed at her insides and made her squirm as she took in the high ceiling and large crowds of people.

She knew the system of Hogwarts like the back of her hand. She had studied it, of course, to keep her mind from whirring on about leaving the bitter safety of her home and entering the freedom of the ginormous castle. The four houses, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Gryffindor separated the students really only by dormitory based on their most prominent traits. She couldn't say she was partial to any of them. She somewhat hated viewing herself from a third person point of view.

She wasn't exactly overwhelmed by the people, but mostly by the situation. For a little less than a year, she would be staying at this castle, meaning she had to make acquaintances with at least some of the students she was surrounded by. But she was a fairly poor judge of character, meaning she was quite susceptible to making friends with the wrong people. Or possibly enemies.

Surrounded by strangers, she took a seat by strangers, and watched as other strangers walked up to the front of the room and had a magic hat placed on their head to tell them what house they would be sorted into. It was a bit more absurd when not being read off the pages of a history book. Some people cried, others cheered, some looked positively horrified. Lottie was barely paying attention until her name was called.

Carefully, she slipped off the bench and made her way to the front of the room. Many eyes were on her, because of course they were. They had been on every student that had come before her, but they wouldn't stick. She put on her best confident face and took a seat on the stool at the head of the room. She tried her best not to flinch back when the hat was placed on her head, but she stayed cool as it spoke softly into her mind.

Peculiar... it mused, Intelligent, like a Ravenclaw, and witty too... lacking in the way of bravery, certainly not a Gryffindor. Lottie wasn't too offended by the statement. You have dreams... big dreams. You want to fulfill- no, you need to fulfill them. You will do whatever it takes to be free. I say... There was a pause, that sickly feeling seeping back into her gut- Slytherin!

Cheers erupted from the table with the snake symbol, students in green robes clapping wildly for their newest member. Lottie gave a polite nod to the headmaster, before hurrying towards her respective table. She carefully dodged a pat on the back from another student, and placed herself next to a less rowdy bunch. Despite her uptight, careless demeanor, she felt a tingling warmth in her chest, that almost brought a smile to her lips. Almost.

The journey to Hogwarts stretched longer than Ozias had anticipated. Although the train offered a cozy and calming atmosphere, his thoughts invariably drifted towards the mysterious adventures awaiting him at the journey's end and to how each of them would be sorted into their houses.

A few hours of talking and too soon, the moment came. The first years were guided toward the lake that led to the school and eventually entered the doors to the Great Hall.

As the doors opened, the first aspect he layed his eyes on was the Hall's undeniable significance. He could've ranked it among the largest rooms that he had ever set foot in. The high ceiling and the vastness of the space instilled a sense of awe within Ozias and his peers alike, a sentiment reinforced by the collective oohs and aahs that resonated throughout his surroundings. However, as soon as he observed the Great Hall, his darkly colored eye turned to a shade of Agrellan Orange that reflected his feelings of speechlessness and amazment.

Soon enough, the group of first years were at the front of the Great Hall, still seemingly mesmerized with the room's grandeur. After everyone had settled down, the name of each first year had been called up. Ozias was still looking around when a voice called his name out.

After a few seconds of forcing Ozias to sit in awkward slience, the hat finally spoke.

"Ahh, A metamorph with a streak of individuality and a knack for writing. Ravenclaw-like traits. Though you are ambitious and have an yearning for adventure. You could be a Slytherin."

After an eternity of thinking to itself, the hat shouted "You shall be in...Ravenclaw!!!"

Almost instantly, cheers and smiles erupted from his new housemates as he made his way to join them.

Han and Alice Lam had prepared their daughter for Hogwarts the best they could. Being squibs, neither of them had attended the school, but they'd heard many stories. These stories had been remembered and, eventually, passed down to their eldest daughter. But nothing could have prepared her for the reality of Hogwarts. Nellie's arm was red and sore from the amount of times she'd pinched herself to ensure she was actually awake. So far, she'd managed to feel it every single time. Besides, she wasn't entirely sure that her imagination alone could come up with all of this. The floating candles bathed the large room in a soft glow and were somehow the most mundane thing that she'd witnessed so far. It was the portraits lining the walls that caught the girl's attention and held it the longest. In all of the descriptions of the wizarding world, somehow, this information had been missed. The pictures here moved.

Her attention fixed, next, on the headmaster as he spoke. She observed him, her brows knitting together as she considered the man's age. He had to be ancient. Fifty? Maybe even older. Her parents had told her of the sorting ceremony and of the hat that oversaw the sorting. Still, she was not prepared for the hat to begin talking. Once more, she pinched her arm and jumped at the pain.

As each name was called and each first year sorted, Nellie sat with rapt attention. She'd been to ceremonies before with seemingly never ending names to be read and rewarded. But this was different. This was magical. This was incredible. Eventually, the moment came when Nellie's name was called. Her stomach tight with nerves, she made her way up to the stool that awaited her. Her parents had even filled her in on the houses. Before the hat was ever placed on her head, she knew where she belonged. Nellie Lam was not particularly clever, ambitious, or brave. The girl was much more comfortable supporting her friends and baking cookies to make sure everyone felt welcome and comfortable. So it came as no surprise when the sorting hat called out, "Hufflepuff!" She smiled in response, pushed her glasses back up onto her nose and rose. Her "Thank you," was so soft and gentle, that it would have been a miracle if it had been heard above the applause. The girl moved to take her place at the table with the other badgers, giving them happy but meek waves as she sat.

Sorting Ceremony, September 1st

It was finally time, after all this waiting, after all this anxiety. The hours on the train, pondering that fatidical moment. And then, the boat crossing. Even though it was a magnificent sight to see the beautiful castle, getting bigger and bigger, closer and closer, Augustus was aware that which each magical paddle stroke, his fate was getting closer to be sealed. In which house was he going to be sorted ? What would his parents say ? And anyways, could the Sorting Hat really read your soul as everyone was used to say ? After all, what could a tattered old hat know about him ? As he was thinking about the multitudes of scenarios possible, he took his first step into the Great Hall.

It was magnificent and grandiose. The ceiling was disguised as the sky, giving the actual impression that there was no ceiling in fact, but just a starry clear sky. In front of him, were laid four enormous long tables, one for each house. Hundreds of students were already seated, talking between themselves, catching up with each other over what they did during the summer. But throughout this cacophony of younglings jabbering at each other, Augustus perceived something almost in common to all. No matter how invested in their conversation they were, it seemed like everyone kept an eye on him. Well, not specifically him, but them, the few dozens of first years, not yet sorted. It was as if the whole school was scanning and analyzing the young witches and wizards, already passing judgement on them. As soon as Augustus noticed that phenomenon, he felt his heart sinking. It was true that he was worried enough about his parent’s reaction to which house he was going to join, but he hadn’t thought about the students of said house. Were they going to accept him ? Would he actually have his place in this so-called family he was going to be attributed. For the next seven years ?! That would be an awfully long time to spend amongst people that didn’t like you.

- You’re giving yourself ideas. Trust the process. Remember what mother said, he muttered discreetly under his breath to himself.

It’s true that his mother already told him about the ceremony and to not worry about his sorting. Apparently, she was fully confident that the Sorting Hat never made a mistake. She had shared with her son, a couple weeks ago when he received his letter that when she was his age, she also doubted the Sorting Hat, even after he sorted her. She never thought she would find her place in Hufflepuff, but she ended up meeting so many great friends along the way. Augustus took a deep breath as the ceremony began.

First, the Headmaster introduced himself and gave a warm welcome to all the students. Strange but imposing fellow that one. He was wearing armor ! Augustus couldn’t believe his eyes. He was expecting an old man wearing sumptuous silky robes but there he was, facing a solidly built, tall middle aged man wearing a full breast plate. Instantly, Augustus was bought. He was so intrigued by this character he began to drink his words. Useless to say he liked the aesthetic of the Headmaster more than he would have anticipated. He even caught himself smiling and wondering what kind of stories this man had to tell. So many adventurous ones he could guess ! If he ever had the chance to, he would definitely dig deeper.

Then the armored Headmaster presented the Sorting Hat. It was as Augustus had imagined it. An old slightly tattered brown big hat with the semblance of a face in some of its folds. Placed on a stool, the old thing started the ceremonial song and soon enough, the first years were getting called one by one. At this moment, the previously roaring hall became silent. All were curious as to know where the new students were going to be sorted. Before long, Augustus was called upon. He took a deep breath and proceeded to reach the small stool. When he sat, he could feel every single pair of eyes in the hall towards him. Their weight was crushing but he refused to close his eyes. He would not show them fear. As a matter of fact, as he was bravely starring off the audience, he noticed that he didn’t really feel fear anymore. There was nothing to be done at this point, he could only face his destiny with courage.

- Hmmm, interesting, ruminated the Sorting Hat. I see a lot of passion, a lot of ambition too. You want to achieve great things. These qualities fit well in Slytherin. He paused for a moment. Augustus’s heart was racing. But then again, I see a big deal of loyalty, not just to your close ones, but to your ideals and that would fit well in Hufflepuff. At this mention, Augustus felt a bit of the pressure fading away. After all, it was his mother’s house and it would make sense. Hmmm, no not exactly, had pursued the hat. I see a great deal of bravery too. You have fears, many of them I would say. But you face them. That in itself is the definition of bravery, for without fear, there would be no courage … it shall then be ... Gryffindor !

At that moment, Gryffindor’s table erupted in applause. Augustus couldn’t believe it ! He was Gryffindor ! His parents, especially his father, would definitely be proud. With a huge smile on his face, and feeling as light as a feather, the young wizard stood from the stool and started to walk towards his house’s table. From now on, it would be seven years of that. He couldn’t explain it, but he felt so relieved.
