As olivia and esme left the train and went into the great hall, Olivia couldn't help but stare with amusement and awe at the beauty of it all. The floating candles, the fake night sky ceiling, the warm welcoming aura. She looked at the tables filled with gorgeous golden dishware and full of beauty. "wow this place really takes your breath away! I knew hogwarts was amazing but never realized it was THIS amazing!" Olivia smiled with amazement as they approched the front of the room where stood a bar stool and an old hat. "oh god, this part is always nervewracking. What house do you think you'll be in? I always got told i had gryffindor vibes but you never know" Olivia had gone on a bit of a nervous rant. "sorry i'm rambling. I do that when i'm nervous" Olivia said and then glanced at esme. "i uh I don't think i ever asked you. Do you maybe possibly wanna be friends?" Olivia asked anxiously hoping this girl would say yes. I mean she seems so nice and cool and just genuinely a good person. Who wouldn't want to be friends with her?" Olivia thought to herself. "or maybe i'm overthinking things as usual" olivia thought in her head.

Esme stood close beside Olivia, her body much more curled into herself, she looked around a little more subtly, and soon she began to really take in the beautiful sights, the “Great Hall” was truly a great hall. She honestly couldn’t believe she was seeing such a vast building, it must have been really easy to get lost, that both relieved and scared her at the same time. “Yeah! It’s super impressive! I wonder what it’ll be like, y’know?”

“What house? I dunno, I think I’m alright with any house, but like…I just hope whatever house it is, I’m not going to be around bad people. They might make fun of me.” She dreaded that thought, her little body shuddering with dread. “I definitely think you’re a Gryffindor, after all, your brave and outgoing and overall you ooze that kind of vibe.” She nods slowly.

“Friends? Me and you?” The question seemed rude and she switched it up, clearly not wanting to be mean to the first girl she met and had fun with. “Of course, I thought we we’re already friends, you’re really cool.” She held her hand out for a shake, trying to seal it. “Friends forever?” She said with a timid grin.

Olivia gave a smile and shook Esme’s hand “friends till the end of the line!” She said as they approached the sorting hat. There were tons of other firsts years probably all as nervous as the other. Olivia was fidgeting with her jewelry and a bit nervous “you really think I’m a gryffindor? I uh take that as a compliment. You seem like a hufflepuff. Soft spoken, kind, gentle, but the type to never back down in a fight!” Olivia smiled as she looked over at Esme. “Though I’ve heard Slytherins are tough. Not a witch or wizard in slytherin who hasn’t gone bad! Though that could be rumor. Never judge a book by a cover you know?” Olivia said as she shrugged a bit.”sorry I’m really nervous and I tend to go on a tangent when I get nervous.” Olivia said as she noticed all those other kids watching. All those new 1st years as well as all the 2nd-5th years made her a bit more nervous. “I got this! I can do this! I can do hard things!” Olivia kind of mumbled to herself trying to hype herself up and relax a bit as she fidgeted with her rings on her fingers.

Esme nodded her head, “I look forward to experiencing this year and the ones beyond with you.” She smiled deeply. Shyly looking away from the many kids cheering for the first years, she winced as if the sun was in her eyes, but she really did appreciate the cheering even if she felt it wasn’t earned, at least by her. “A Hufflepuff? I would really like that.” Hearing Olivia’s comment on Slytherin, mixed with her knowledge of them based on older newspapers on Hogwarts, history books and studies she did before she came, she figured Slytherins were a bit sus, maybe not all of them but she wondered why there were so many bad ones? Why were majority of the bad witches and wizards she heard of from Slytherin? It was just so unfortunate really. She turned to Olivia and noticed how she seemed panicked. “Don’t worry? I know you can handle this, if you really are a Gryffindor then bravery is your thing, you can totally handle this, and even if you’re anything else, I don’t think it’ll make you any less Olivia than when you started, right?” She looked to Olivia with admiration. “What are those rings from?”

Olivia looked up when she heard Esme’s question. “Oh they’re fidget rings. It helps to reduce anxiety and worry. It’s just a little part of the ring spins.” Olivia said as she took a ring off her finger and handed it to Esme to see. “Your welcome to keep that one if you like. I have an extra.” Olivia said with a smile as she then heard Esme’s name called for the sorting hat. Olivia smiled kind of distracted and not listening to the sorting ceremony as they talked. “I have anxiety so I use a lot of little things to keep my hands busy. It helps distract my mind and is kind of fun at the same time.” Olivia paused “any uh fun facts about you? I want to get to know you a little better. Maybe we have something in common. I mean something tells me your a really cool person!” Olivia said with a small smile. She couldn’t help it if she was nice. It always made her feel good about herself and she knew it made others feel happy too. She was always taught by her parents to give unto others as others gave unto her.

Esme took the ring with a grin, she figured her mother and father would scold her and tell her to decline it at least twice. Yet the thing is... she isn't in China anymore, the customs aren't quite the same... maybe Esme was being a bit too rebellious, but as long as her mother wasn't breathing down her neck, she couldn't see why she couldn't take this one gift without refusal. "Thank you, this is deeply appreciated, Péngyǒu (friend). And I think I should reciprocate, I'll get you something back, no worry, okay?"

Once she heard her name she flinched, it's always a weird feeling for your name to leave someone's lips, especially when you don't know the voice personally, she looked around and then waved at Olivia "I'll be back..." She whispered almost silently, then she made her way to the hat, nearly falling over her foot as she tried to hurry to the wooden seat, without sprinting. Esme sat on the stool and shut her little eyes calmly, imaging all the things that she enjoyed, that calmed her and eased tension. Esme figured that if she was to be put into a house, her thoughts couldn't be completely empty, so when the old and wise Sorting Hat began to fall over her eyes she let it peer into her deepest thoughts, shielding nothing from it's scrutiny. "HUFFLEPUFF!" The hat's voice suddenly boomed, cutting into the quiet atmosphere like a spell in a crowd. The Hufflepuff table cheered and beamed her way, she couldn't help but be a little proud of her new place in the world.

As Esme made her way back to her buddy, going at the same pace as before, with maybe a little less nervousness on her face, she tried to rekindle their conversation, not even really mentioning her house. "Anxiety? You have a lot on your plate, I'm sorry." She thinks about herself, what was really interesting about her? Well, she was foreign, but that didn't really make her special since plenty of the students here were foreign or of descent of a foreigner. Other than that Esme was pretty average. "Well, I would probably have to dig deeper, I don't think I am too interesting, maybe I can think of something while we talk." Esme pauses and then says "I would hope we have something in common, I'd kill to be as interesting as you."
