Jam skipped along the snow-covered sidewalk to her favourite coffee spot. The Leaky Cauldron served surprisingly delicious coffee, whether it was black or creamed. The girl stepped into the inn, unwrapping the red and white striped scarf around her neck while making her way towards the counter.

“One hot creamed coffee please!” The girl ordered with a happy grin. Jam took the time to take in the cozy environment of the inn. It was usually described as shabby and dull according to her schoolmates, but Jam thought otherwise. There were people catching up at every seat of the room and delicious aromas filled the air. There were scents of coffee, pastries, and warmth mixing around in the air, making the place a wonderful spot to relax and unwind after a long day of studying.

Jam finally collected her order and slid into a comfy chair in the Great Hall, where many of the occupants took the time to meet up with friends both old and new. The brunette didn’t invite any of her friends to meet her there that day, but she felt at peace.

The girl pulled down her red beanie and took a whiff of the steam of her drink. There was something special about the coffee at the Leaky Cauldron, but Jam knew better than to discover what it was. The Ravenclaw girl lifted the drink to her lips, blowing on it before taking a sip.

The young girl pursed her lips as she looked at a group of friends in front of her and thought, “Maybe it would be nicer if I had a friend here with me too…” Jam sighed as she continued staring at the group, jealous of their close-knit friendship.

Regulus was tired and bored in the weekend after a long week of classes so they decided to visit the leaky cauldron. Regulus heard students saying they served delicious coffee there and thought of giving it a go since they were craving it for a while.

“One iced latte for me please!” Regulus ordered at the counter after what felt like a millennia, the queue was extremely long so Regulus was having extremely high expectations of the coffee. They noticed they got some weird looks and people quietly whispering why a person would buy a drink with ice in a snowy day. Regulus shrugged and continued waiting for the order, ignoring the laugher that definitely not directed at them. The order finally came after a while and Regulus hurried out the shop, wanting to leave this place.

Before leaving, Regulus spotted a familiar brown haired girl sitting alone in the Great Hall. It was Jam! Regulus felt happy to see a familiar face after so long. Maybe I should stay for a while...? Regulus thought as they went over and greet their friend.

"Hey Jam, nice seeing you here," Regulus started the conversation, stumbling a bit with their words. Why am I so awkward all the time??? Regulus internally screamed. They took a deep breath and gave her a friendly smile, hoping it would not be too obvious that he was that awkward. A breath of visible gas appeared in the air, and it vanished after mere seconds, making Regulus felt slightly sad seeing something so mesmerising disappear. They took a sip of their ice latte nervously and turned to see what Jam was up to.

Jam’s gaze shifted to Regulus and her eyes lit up immediately. She had just been wishing that she had a friend with her and it came true. It was just like magic (not that she didn’t know magic; this just seemed like a different kind).

The girl first spotted her friend’s drink. She pressed her lips into a line, still slightly smiling, and cocked her head to the side. Why’re they drinking an iced latte??? Jam thought to ask about it, but figured it was just a preference and decided to skip mentioning it.

“Reggie! Nice seeing you here too! Here for a coffee?” Jam exclaimed with a wide smile. She gestured for them to take a seat across from her with her hand. She was quite excited to see her friend, since they barely saw each other anymore. It was a good time to catch up, since they were about to be sent home soon.

There was still an awkward tension that hung in the air and Jam glanced around furtively. It’s kinda awkward… Jam thought as she bit her lip. She decided to ask a simple question just to get the conversation going. “Well, um, how’s everything?” She started, she barely avoided tripping over her words and covered it up with a quick clearance of her throat.

“Reggie! Nice seeing you here too! Here for a coffee?” Jam exclaimed with a wide smile. Regulus smiled at the nickname and took a seat after noticing that she was offering one. "Yeah, I heard this place's coffee is really nice. Thought I would give it a try before going to Diagon Ally." They replied. Regulus had not seen Jam since their last trip to Diagon Ally so they were delighted to see her again.

Regulus hesitated if they should continue the conversation as they didn't really like talking about themselves so much. They thought they could ask Jam how she was doing, given it had been a few weeks since they had met. Regulus was even surprised that she remembered them.

"Well, um, how's everything?" Jam asked, clearing her throat. Being quite the overthinker, Regulus would not like to spill a whole chunk of nonsense to overwhelm their new friend so they came up with a quick summary to - well, to sum up everything. "I've been doing good, thanks for asking..." they paused for a second , trying to think of a new topic that could lead to a longer conversation, "I've been enjoying Charms and Astronomy the most so far... How about you?"

Regulus felt a bit more relieved when the awkwardness had slowly faded as Jam was talking. They were glad to reunite with a friend after a long and tiring week of school. As Regulus was listening attentively, they occasionally take a few sips of the ice latte as well and pulling their hair away from their eyes, giving up after their hair fell back in the original place again and again. This is gonna be a fun day, Regulus sighed happily.

“Ah! I’m glad you asked. I literally cannot ever shut up about potions and herbology it’s just SO interesting!” Jam brightened up as she went rambling on and on about her most recent classes. She felt quite comfortable talking a lot around her friends. To others, it may seem that she didn’t really enjoy talking, but the moment she was with her friends, her true self comes out.

The girl noticed Regulus sipping on their latte as they listened quietly. By the time she was finished, half of the cup was already gone, and she had barely touched hers. Giving a small yet playful smile, Jam took a few big sips out of her cup, trying to level it closer to her friend’s. She pouted a tiny bit, realising the beverage wasn’t hot the way she liked it anymore. Instead, it had cooled to room temperature, which would have been slightly yucky to her if it wasn’t for this particular coffee’s excellent brewage.

Jam’s first instinct after she realised the beverage’s loss of heat was to ask Regulus if their coffee was colder too, and that was what she did. “Is your coffee colder too?” She asked, then mentally slapping her forehead when she realised his latte was iced. “I mean warmer! I meant warmer, haha…” She laughed nervously. “You know, ‘cause your drink is…iced.”

Jam tried to avoid the subject altogether, even though she could tell her friend wouldn’t resist the urge to tease her a little. “Anyways…” She started, but for some reason she couldn’t find a new topic to talk about despite her racking her brain for something new. The girl gave up and chuckled at her earlier mistake, looking up from her cup and meeting her friend’s eyes with hints of embarrassment and silliness in her own.

“Is your coffee colder too?” Jam asked. Regulus blinked, finding the situation from slightly confusing to amusing. “I mean warmer! I meant warmer, haha…” She laughed nervously. “You know, ‘cause your drink is…iced.” Regulus bit their lower lip, trying to hold their laughter in, failing after Jam finished her sentence and let out a little chuckle.

"I guess in a way... but I don't really taste the difference," Regulus shrugged, still thinking about what Jam said earlier and trying to contain their laughter. They could tell that she didn't really enjoy her coffee after it went cold, if only they knew a heating charm... Regulus tried to recall all the lessons they had been in so far, but apparently none of them taught them a heating charm. As Regulus was trying to rack their brain for tiny bits of information, Jam spoke up.

“Anyways…” she started, then paused. Regulus understood that feeling of not knowing what to say next so they decided to help carrying on the conversation. "Have you finished reading that book from before - The Enchanted Quill Chronicles: A Journey Through Magical Ink?" Regulus asked, curious. They were thinking back to their first encounter in Flourish and Blotts where the brunette bought that book before.

A sigh of relief gusted out from the girl’s lips as Regulus changed the topic for her. “Oh, you remembered!” Jam smiled, remembering that one afternoon they had spent together with their sister at Diagon Alley. “Yeah I’m done with it!”

The girl tried explaining the plot of the book without spoiling it for them, since they might want to borrow it. “I think it is truly fascinating! I couldn’t put the book down for days until I could tear myself away from it.”

“You know, the whole concept about the magical ink is so cool! Imagine if among all our regular ink, there’s a magical one able to open a portal to, well, anywhere! Just like in the book!” Jam said with a wistful tone. Of course she enjoyed the magic already within the walls of her school, but this, this was an entirely different thing.

The girl played with the scarf in her hand as she looked out the window, pausing for a moment before continuing. She didn’t want the whole conversation to be about her ranting despite how comfortable she felt.

She let out a quiet hum and took a sip of her coffee, finishing the beverage, then turning back to Regulus, asking them, “Y’know if you want, I don’t mind lending it to you for a couple days. It truly is quite a wonderful book, and I think you’d like it!”
