The Hand That Pulled Her Up

On a sunny day in May, the Great Lake of Hogwarts exuded an enchanting charm. it was almost empty from any students or teachers. The crystal-clear waters glistened like a sea of diamonds under the gentle caress of the early sunlight. The surface of the lake reflected the azure sky, creating a mesmerizing mirror image that seemed to extend into infinity.
A gentle breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming flowers from the nearby shores, mingling with the fresh, earthy aroma of the water. The surrounding trees swayed gracefully, their vibrant green leaves rustling in harmony with the sounds of nature.
Delilah walked up to the shore of the Great Lake at Hogwarts this Saturday afternoon, seeking a breath of fresh air. As she approached, her huge, blonde, frizzy hair bounced with each step, adding a touch of eccentricity to her appearance.
Delilah's choice of clothing reflected her unique personality. She was wearing a black shirt adorned with the face of an adorable alien, showcasing her love for all things extraterrestrial. As she stood by the lakeshore, the warm sunlight caught the twinkle in her eyes, making them seem even more mischievous and spirited.
As Delilah stood by the shore, feeling the scorching heat of the sun on her skin, she couldn't help but entertain the tempting idea of plunging into the cool waters of the Great Lake. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead, and her frizzy hair seemed to grow more unruly with each passing moment. The thought of a refreshing swim danced in her mind, whispering promises of relief from the sweltering heat.
Her eyes darted around, gauging the situation. Delilah knew that swimming in the Great Lake was strictly against the rules, but the heat was unbearable, and her adventurous spirit couldn't resist the allure of the water. She imagined the blissful sensation of floating in the lake's embrace, the soothing water washing away the discomfort of the hot day.
Feeling daring and rebellious, Delilah made up her mind. She glanced around, making sure no one was watching, and then quickly dismissed her shoes and socks, leaving them on the shore. Her heart raced with excitement !
She took a deep breath and ran towards the water, feeling the soft sand beneath her feet. The moment she hit the water, a refreshing chill rushed through her body, washing away the discomfort of the hot day. The coolness embraced her like a comforting hug, and she couldn't help but let out a joyful laugh.
Delilah swam with a sense of liberation, splashing and playing in the water, feeling like she had conquered the rules that bound her. The thrill of the forbidden act made her adrenaline surge, and she relished the moment of rebellion.
As Delilah frolicked in the water, the initial joy of breaking the rules was quickly replaced by a sense of panic. Suddenly, her legs felt heavy and unresponsive, and she struggled to keep herself afloat. Fear gripped her heart as she realized she was in trouble – she was drowning.
Frantically, Delilah tried to call for help, but her voice was muffled by the water. Panic surged through her as she fought to stay above the surface, but her strength was waning. She desperately gasped for air as her head bobbed in and out of the water.

Kim had been rather concerned about Puffie lately, it didn't seem as if his beloved puff was doing too well. But the pink haired teen hoped his worries were just him being overprotective. Maybe he'd be fine after some time. He was probably just a bit sick, right??? If Puffie still wasn't feeling better next month he'd take him to the vet just to be sure. A sigh escaped his lips as he tried to think about something other than what was currently occupying his thoughts nearly every second of the day now. Kim had gone outside, as it was a sunny day today, to head down to the Great Lake. He'd taken his satchel with him, with all its usual items.... Those being a variety of packaged sweets, his sketchbook and art materials, various bottles of hair dye and hair accessories, and a few other things. Puffie was not with him at the moment because he was currently sleeping and Kim didn't want to wake him up right now. Let him get all the sleep he needed. When he woke, Kim would devote all his attention to him. And if he needed to go somewhere, he'd take him with him. For now, he'd get out and do a bit of drawing, maybe write a few song lyrics. It might settle his chaotic feelings.... He headed for one of his favorite spots. It should have been a popular place but a lot of students preferred the main areas more than this one. The one he preferred was off to the side a little. He'd seen others sit at the same place before but it wasn't nearly as popular as the main section was. Thankfully, at this time on this particular day, no one was there at the moment. Upon reaching said location, somewhere near the water's edge but not quite touching it, Kim placed his satchel down and was just about to take a seat when splashing could be heard not far away from him. He couldn't help but be reminded of a time back in the past. Where he'd heard splashing back then too. He'd ended up saving a drowning student, someone he'd actually known. At the time, Kim had been sporting purple hair and if he recalled correctly, Puffie had been back at the dorms sleeping then too. Wouldn't it be deja vu if the splashing he'd just heard was a drowning student like Quinn too? Kim looked out across the Great Lake before him, his blue eyes searching the surface of the water. For a time, he didn't see anything but then a head broke through the surface and started bobbing up and down. His eyes widened at the sight. Someone was drowning again. What possessed students to go swimming in the Great Lake by themselves without permission or friends? Sure, Kim understood the need to break or bend rules. There was nothing wrong with that kind of mindset. But it all depended upon the rule and what kind of risks were at stake! If it was something that could lead to possible death or severe harm, no one should do it. And if they really couldn't resist the temptation, at least bring along a friend. Just in case something went wrong. The friend could then call for help or help you themselves. But enough of these thoughts. This person couldn't wait for him. They were drowning out there. The pink haired teen dove into the water and swam out towards the last location he'd seen the head pop up. Upon reaching his destination, Kim dove under the water to search for the person. If his target was there, he would grab them around their waist and use his strength to bring them up to the surface again. Once at the surface, he would swim back to shore with them. If his target was not there, he would swim around and search for them until he'd found them and do the same thing. Hopefully they would be conscious on shore... |

Delilah lay on the lakeshore, sputtering water, her clothes clinging to her like wet parchment. The pink-haired student stood nearby, dripping but looking unfazed. Delilah blinked up at him, her dreamy eyes wide.
Merlin's Beard! I always knew the lake was hiding something, but I didn't expect it to be a pink-haired knight in soggy armor. You're not a mermaid, are you? Do mermaids even have pink hair? Never mind, thanks for the rescue, by the way."
Delilah sat up abruptly, seemingly undisturbed by the fact that she had just been rescued from a watery fate.
"Well, this is a fine mess, isn't it? I guess swimming with the giant squid was a tad ambitious. Should've stuck to daydreaming by the edge," she mused, her tone casual despite the absurdity of the situation.
Delilah blinked up at him, her messy hair sticking in all directions.
"What's your name, Pinky? Or should I call you the Grand Lake Guardian?" she said, grinning.
Delilah, undeterred, continued her rambling monologue.
And as if struck by a sudden revelation, gasped dramatically. "Oh, wait! What if you're a lake spirit? Are you here to grant me soggy wishes or curse me with eternal dampness? Either way, it's a wild Tuesday afternoon, I'll give you that."
Delilah grinned mischievously, as if the entire lake incident had been a grand joke played just for her amusement. Of course, it was a good scare and Delilah was really grateful for the boy, but she couldn't show him that she was weak and fearful, could she ? Growing up on a steady diet of fantastical tales and heroic exploits, she had absorbed the unspoken rule that protagonists didn't show fear, weakness, or vulnerability. No one admired the character who quivered at the first sign of danger or crumbled under pressure.
Deep within, Delilah grappled with the fear that she was not the hero she portrayed herself to be. The fear of being labeled weak or inadequate, of not living up to the expectations set by the stories she so dearly loved. Her seeming nonchalance wasn't a dismissal of the genuine gratitude she felt toward her pink-haired savior; it was a battle against the internal narrative that whispered she had failed some unspoken heroism criteria. The mask of nonchalance became her armor, a defense mechanism against the fear that threatened to consume her.
With a dramatic sweep of her hand, she stood up, water cascading off her clothes.

| ─── | Once again it was a girl out there.
Maybe it had to do with girls wanting to explore the waters. Kim didn't think he'd ever seen a boy out there. Girls did tend to be a little more daring in bodies of water. Guys seemed to be a little more daring with physical things. But that didn't mean the opposite didn't happen either. It was just more common this way, at least from Kim's experience. As the girl he'd saved lay on the shore, sputtering out water, Kim reached into his pocket and drew out his wand to point it at himself. "Aer Calidus!" He incanted and a gust of hot air came out from the tip of his wand and immediately dried off his clothes. Ah, the dryness felt a lot better. Kim glanced over in the direction of the girl he'd just saved, who was speaking to him. "I'm not a mermaid, they're only females. I don't actually know if they can have pink hair or not but I'd assume it could be possible." He told the girl before him and nodded when she thanked him for the assistance. "It's fine, I've done it before." Inwardly, Kim wondered if this kind of thing would keep happening to him. As she spoke, referring to the Giant Squid, a sigh escaped his lips. So that was the reason. What a reason. "So that's what you were doing out there? Trying to swim with the Giant Squid?" Kim asked. The pink haired teen raised a brow in her direction. "Trying to do such a thing is dangerous. There could be unforeseen consequences to doing so. There are other creatures and beings that live in the waters too. You could have disturbed their slumber." Kim added. "If you really want to swim or get your feet wet, you can always just wade or stick by the shallows. I do that sometimes. It's safer and less likely to get you into any trouble." He suggested and tilted his head. What had she just asked? Ah, she'd asked for his name. "Kim. People call me the Prince of Sweets." He told her and regarded her for a few seconds. Of course, since he'd offered his name, he expected her to offer hers too. As the girl wondered if he was a lake spirit, Kim's lips twitched a little, this was a very strange conversation but he also kind of liked it too. She was quite different from most people. As she stood up, water cascading down off her clothes, Kim was reminded of her status of being drenched with all that water. "Here. Let me take care of that for you." He said. It was the least he could do for her, it was probably uncomfortable standing there in dripping clothes. Pointing his wand at her clothes, Kim incanted, "Aer Calidus!" and within a matter of seconds the girl's clothes were dry again. "So, what do you have planned for the rest of the afternoon?" He asked. |

Delilah blinked in surprise as Kim effortlessly dried her clothes with a wave of his wand, her hair, now only slightly damp, framed her face in wild, tousled waves. The sudden warmth and dryness caught her off guard, and she couldn't help but break into a wide, grateful smile.
"Oh, Prince of Sweets, you truly have a flair for the dramatic, saving damsels in distress and drying clothes with a wave of your wand! Quite the magical entrance, if I say so myself." she exclaimed, her voice a mixture of amusement and appreciation. Delilah ran her fingers through her now-dry hair, still processing the magical feat she had just witnessed. " I owe you one—literally saved me from walking around like a waterlogged ghost."
As she took a moment to gather herself, Delilah's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Prince of Sweets, huh? That's a cool title. Do you have, like, a kingdom made of candy or something?" she asked, a playful glint in her eyes. Her mind was clearly still wandering between the realms of the fantastical and the mundane.
With her plans of daydreaming and cloud-staring disrupted by the unexpected lake incident, Delilah found herself open to the spontaneous adventure that seemed to be unfolding. She glanced up at the sky, clouds drifting lazily overhead. "I guess my original plan got a bit wet," she chuckled, shaking her head.
Kim's question about the rest of the afternoon brought a thoughtful expression to Delilah's face. "Honestly, I hadn't planned much beyond staring at the clouds, but maybe today is a day for unexpected adventures," she mused, a playful glint in her hazel eyes. "Any suggestions, oh Prince of Sweets?" Her laugh echoed with a carefree spirit, reflecting the chaotic and dreamy nature that defined her.
Delilah, caught up in the whimsy of the moment, suddenly realized she hadn't shared her own name with the enigmatic Prince of Sweets. Her hazel eyes widened in realization, and she brought a hand to her mouth in a playful expression of astonishment.
"Oh, how thoughtless of me!" she exclaimed with a theatrical gasp, her blonde curls bouncing with the motion. "My name is Delilah. I find my name quite boring sometimes." she announced with a flourish, as if unveiling a hidden treasure.
If I were to choose another, I'd fancy something a tad more extravagant. Dulcibella or Angelique, perhaps, , something that screams 'adventurer' rather than 'garden party' or 'Church Maniac." She pronounced the names with an attempt at sophistication that ended up sounding more comical than refined.

| ─── | The girl's reaction to his spell made him tilt his head to the side.
The words had been odd. "From your words, I guess you're a muggle-born?" Kim asked, curious. At least that was what it had seemed to him. Quite the magical entrance... why would a witch use the word 'magical' if magic had always been part of their lives? What other kind of entrance could there be to dry clothes in a fast and convenient manner? The muggle way - which he did employ sometimes - was too slow when it made the most sense to dry off quickly. Kim shook his head a little. "...I'm no hero, I was just in the right place at the right time. I don't like to see anyone get hurt when I can help them out." He told Delilah. As the girl spoke to him again, referring to his title, Kim couldn't help but almost smirk. It was almost a smirk but not quite there. It had been awhile since he'd smiled and he didn't tend to do it often. But Delilah was interesting to him, so she almost managed to make him do it. "I think it's because I like to bake sweets and then always end up giving everyone some. It's almost like they can smell it from a million miles away and come flocking to me for some." Kim said with a shake of his head. Delilah's idea of staring at the clouds made his lips twitch. "I have to admit, that does sound like a plan. Sometimes it's nice to just chill outside." Kim confessed, as he looked up at the sky and let his blue eyes flicker over the slow-moving clouds. "Did you already do all your homework?" He asked, curious. Kim tended to do all of his on Friday evenings and if there was any left-over he'd finish it up on Saturday mornings. But usually he could get it all done on Fridays. Of course, he knew that not everyone was like that and most students tended to procrastinate. But now and then he'd find someone like him too. Kim headed over to pick up his enchanted satchel nearby. And then returned to Delilah's side, setting the satchel down onto the ground, before taking a seat himself there. He looked up at her and patted the ground beside him. "Take a seat." Kim told her and reached into his satchel to rummage through it for a few seconds. After a few seconds, he found what he was looking for and drew something out, hiding it behind his back for now. As Delilah spoke about her name, Kim nodded. "Your name choices aren't bad at all but I think Delilah is a pretty nice name." He told Delilah. "I actually haven't met a Delilah before." "Anyone ever call you Del?" He asked with a smile. The pink haired teen might end up calling her that. If she didn't mind it. "Pick my left or right hand." Kim told her, his fingers curling around the two items he had behind his back now. One was a circular item. The other was a more square-diamond item. One was hidden in his left hand behind his back and the other was hidden in his right hand behind his back. Whatever hand she picked would be the item she would receive from him. Kim was curious as to which hand she'd pick. Both items were great, so she'd be happy with either and he could introduce her to a new world. |

"Muggle-born, you say?" she mused, twirling a strand of her blonde curls around her finger. "Well, guilty as charged. I may not be born in the wizarding ways, but I do appreciate a good bit of magic when it happens. I still can't believe I'm magical too!" She gave him a playful wink, a mix of insecurity and curiosity in her hazel eyes.
Her hazel eyes glistened with a mix of vulnerability and determination. "I may not have grown up with magic, but I've got a whole world of it waiting to be explored. Every spell, every enchanted creature is like a page in a storybook I've just opened. And I wouldn't trade that feeling for anything."
As Kim shared the tale of his title as the "Prince of Sweets" and his penchant for baking, a whimsical smile graced Delilah's lips. Her hazel eyes, usually bright with curiosity, transformed into soft crescents as they narrowed with the genuine joy that his words brought her. The corners of her eyes crinkled, forming delicate wrinkles that spoke of the sincerity of her delight.
"You know, I've always believed that sweets have a certain magical allure," she said with a smile. "And you, dear Prince, seem to wield that magic quite well. I insist, Kim, I must taste one of your enchanted sweets."
Delilah's eyes lit up at the suggestion of cloud-watching, a dreamy smile gracing her lips. "Sometimes, you just need to let your mind wander with the clouds and forget about all the mundane things. That's what I do, aside from drowning in Lakes of course. As for homework," she sighed, her expression turning more somber, "I'm the queen of procrastination. But hey, who needs homework when you have a sky full of wonders?"
As she took a seat beside Kim, she couldn't help but feel a sense of ease in his presence. The cool blades of grass tickled her fingertips, and she ran them through the verdant strands, feeling the earthy texture beneath her. A contented smile spread across her face, and her hazel eyes sparkled with a quiet happiness. His question about her name drew a thoughtful expression from her. "Yeah, some friends call me Del. It sounds cool, doesn't it? Del, the mighty," she said with a laugh.
"Call me Del, call me Delilah, just don't call me late for a baking session, Prince of Sweets! I've got a sweet tooth that's been waiting for some enchanting treats,"
When Kim presented the choice between his left and right hand, Delilah couldn't resist feeling a bit exited, she got exited for a lot of things, Quarelling with her sisters, eating her father's lasagna, cracking fire in the fireplace, running barefeet on the grass, climbing trees, sleeping on the couch, petting her cat... but she enjoyed most of all playing games with people she liked.
"Right hand, of course! Because, you see, the right side is the right side, and who wants to be left out of that?" Delilah's odd chuckle echoed through the lakeside air, and her gaze lingered on Kim's blue eyes,a habit she had developed over time—trying to decipher the unspoken stories etched in people's souls, minds, and thoughts through the windows of their eyes. However, with Kim, the task proved to be nearly insurmountable.

| ─── | Kim continued to listen to Delilah.
As she spoke, a faint smile played along the corners of his lips. He couldn't help but feel rather comfortable. Why did Delilah seem so familiar to him? As she spoke of magic and her fascination with the wizarding world, along with her interest in books, Kim found himself drawn in. "I must say, you have a way with words." He told her with a twitch of his lips. It was only when she expressed her great passion for sweets that it dawned on him why she felt so familiar to him. Sophia. Delilah was a lot like Sophia had been with him. Kim's shoulders slumped a bit and his thoughts drifted away from the present time for a few moments. As he recalled a certain redhead's face within his mind's eye, Kim heaved a sigh and blinked upon hearing himself do so. Right. He should focus on the present, not keep getting lost in the past. Delilah had been talking about sweets and Kim let his blue eyes return to her again. "I'll make sure I send you an owl when I bake again." He told her, trying to put a smile on his face for the girl before him. Smiles were necessary to make people feel at ease, right? "You don't have any food dislikes, do you?" Kim asked. Delilah was a procrastinator! Kim made a face. "You shouldn't procrastinate! You end up getting stressed if you do that." "If you do it all at once until it's done, you don't have to worry about it for the rest of your time off and can just relax and do whatever you want to do. Well, unless you have other responsibilities like me." Kim said as he let his eyes linger on Delilah for a few seconds. This was seriously one of the reasons why inherently Kim's true nature was more like a Ravenclaw than any of the other Houses. He'd always been interested in knowledge and learning above everything and anything else. Books were one of his great sources of pleasure. Gryffindors weren't known for their extreme love of books, learning and knowledge. But Kim could always be found writing, reading or doing something creative or artistic in his off time. Those kind of things were normally traits related to Ravenclaw. Gryffindors were usually bold, courageous, daring and chivalrous. Everything Kim was not. But his mother had embodied most of those traits. Since he was from her blood, maybe that was why the Hat had placed him in her House. Delilah was a good sport. She chose a hand quickly, despite Kim having asked her out of nowhere to choose one of his hands. The girl didn't bat an eye and didn't ask why she should do that, or what was going on. Seriously, Delilah reminded Kim a lot of Sophia, which was painful and bittersweet at the same time. When Delilah chose his right hand, the pink haired teen brought his right hand out from behind his back. He presented the prize within his hand to the girl before him. "Congratulations. You've won a chocolate frog!" Kim told her with a smile. The trapezoid box with wizard designs all over it became visible as he opened his fingers to her. |

There was a depth to Kim that intrigued Delilah, a kind of a mystery that hung in the air like the remnants of a magical spell. "What's your story, Kim?" She wanted to ask, but thought it could come off a bit weird. She will later on regret not asking the question, but right now, she allowed the enchantment of the day to prevail,
Delilah chuckled at Kim's question, her eyes dancing with amusement. "Food dislikes? Please, I'm like a human disposal unit. I eat everything! Vegetables, desserts, potions ingredients—well, maybe not potions ingredients, but you get the idea!" She grinned, giving a playful shrug. She was talking with hand gestures, flinging her arms and hands as though an actress in a play, she always did that. Some thought it was too dramatic, too "over the top", but Del didn't care what others thought, well most of the time she didn't.
As Kim presented the chocolate frog as her prize, Delilah's eyes widened in surprise. "No way! I've never won anything before!" Her hands carefully accepted the trapezoid box with wizard designs.
She had won things before, but they were minor, often laced with a tinge of sadness—the fleeting kiss on the cheek or the tight hug she'd receive before her father locked himself away in his study or her mother left for a week of work.
Her gaze momentarily drifted, as if lost in the memories of those warm nights when her father cooked a meal and her mother, if only briefly, would sit down to pet Mr. Whiskers. Those moments, rare as they were, painted a semblance of family that she longed for. She never told anyone about her lacking family and she will never. Whiny ِcharacters were always disliked in her books.
"Thank you, Kim! This is so cool," She lifted her gaze to meet Kim's eyes once again, and like an artist retouching a masterpiece, she repainted the smile on her face.
As she took a bite, a delighted expression crossed her face. "Mmm, sweet victory!" she exclaimed, savoring the rich taste. "But what's in the other hand though ?"She took another bite with a playful hum.

| ─── | Delilah was definitely energetic!
Kim listened as the girl spoke about how she wasn't picky at all and could eat pretty much anything. Well, that made it easier for him. Delilah's hand gestures that accompanied her words made his lips twitch a little. She would do well in his Drama Club and he wondered if the girl would join it later. She would flourish there. Or was she already part of the club? Kim usually had a good memory when it came to things like this but lately he'd been feeling rather lackluster. And it was getting hard for him to remember much of anything these days. There wasn't anything wrong with his brain, Kim just didn't seem to care as much anymore now. Of course, he knew it was something he should work on, but it was hard to focus. Especially with Puffie's current health. Kim needed to be present at all times to ensure Puffie got the best treatment. He closed his eyes briefly and reached up to rub some wetness from his eyes. It wasn't because he'd suddenly become sad, it was natural wetness that randomly came to eyes now and then. "So I take it you don't have any food allergies?" The pink haired teen asked and thought for a few seconds. "Do you have any favorites?" This would also help him think about what to make next time. Chocolate, peanut butter, oatmeal-raisin, vanilla, fruit etc... there were loads of things to choose from. There were also cookies, brownies, cakes, ice cream and other types of snacks and desserts out there. What were some of Delilah's favorites? "I do happen to run a bunch of clubs at Hogwarts and co-run a lot more. If you're really interested in cooking and baking, you can join the Tri-Cook Club (TCC). There's also a Drama Club I run too." He remarked, singling out those specific two since they were more likely to be of interest to Delilah. Based off what they'd spoken of so far together in the present. It was near the end of the year but there was no harm trying to get new members for his clubs now. After all, that meant he'd have some new members for the start of the next year. When Delilah expressed her surprise at having won something, Kim smirked. "Well, it's not much but at least it's something good you can eat. Rather than something you won't ever use." He told her with a shrug of his shoulders. The pink haired teen watched as she took the chocolate frog box from him and couldn't help but wonder a little. Would she have the same reaction as Sophia? Kim's unspoken question was answered soon after when Delilah unwrapped the box without any trouble. She managed to grab the frog before it jumped away and bit down on it with no trouble at all. Kim couldn't help but feel disappointed but at the same time it didn't really matter if she reacted the same way as Sophia, right? But that did make him wonder when she'd had her first chocolate frog if she was a muggle-born. "You're muggle-born, right? If that's the case, when did you have your first chocolate frog?" Kim asked, curious. It couldn't have been Del's first time because her reaction would have been different. All muggles tended to react with surprise upon opening their first chocolate frog, mostly because they didn't expect it to actually move. As Delilah asked what was in his other hand, Kim brought his other hand back around and showed her what was inside. A marshmallow biscuit could be seen within a thin layer of transparent wrapping and he thought for a moment and then tossed it over at her. "Catch! You can have this one too. I like the way you eat with such gusto!" Kim said with a twitch of his lips and nodded. He leaned back onto the grass behind him. Staring up at the sky above him, Kim raised his arms and crossed them behind his head, supporting it. "How much homework do you have left to do?" He asked suddenly. Maybe they could do homework together outside for awhile. It was nice to chill outside, while being somewhat productive at the same time. |
