The holiday season had always been special to Oakleigh. It was the time of her birthday, her brother's, her best friend, and many many more in her family. It seemed like there had always been a birthday everyday in december. Oakleigh was sitting at the Ravenclaw table, reading a book on divination, her favorite topic. She admired the tree, as it was extremely tall. Her tree at home was always plastic and resideded in a cardboard box all year on top of the fridge. Seeing a fresh one made her nose tingle with the smell. She didn't mind it. She was glad that classes were over for the day so she could be out of uniform. She wore her plaid messenger cap with a white and dull green striped wool jacket.

She watched as other students interacted with each 0ther, and it was a heartwarming sight. She remember her father had told her that students of different houses barely interacted, but it was a new time. A new era. Oakleigh smiled to herself as she shook her head, turning back to her book that rested in her lap. Even though it was a while into the school year, she still hadn't made some friends yet. She didn't mind too much, as it was something that she had been used to when she went to Muggle school before her Hogwarts letter arrived. Her foot tapped against the ground to the tune of the song in her head.

Jam was an avid fan of the holidays. Despite the fall being her favourite season, winter was a close second. There was so much beauty in this season of snow and comfort that the Ravenclaw girl couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

The brunette skipped along the Great Hall, her shoes leaving little taps in their wake as she headed towards the Ravenclaw table. The hall today was especially pretty, as there were red and green lights illuminating the chatter-filled room.

Student of all years and houses were sharing laughter at every table, but the girl noticed a lonesome student sitting at her house’s table. The fellow housemate didn’t seem at all lonely, despite being alone. In fact, she seemed quite satisfied with her nose in a book. Jam understood that feeling, mainly because she was a bookworm as well.

Upon closer inspection, the eleven year-old realised the book of interest was a book on divination. That was a topic the girl had read few books about. As her knowledge on the topic was quite lacklustre, Jam being the knowledge-hungry girl that she is, she slid onto the seat across of the other Ravenclaw girl.

“Hi! I’m Jam and I’m in Ravenclaw too!” The girl spoke when she realised the girl sitting opposite of her didn’t seem to notice her, “Is that book any good?” Jam slightly nodded her head to the book, raising her eyebrows expectantly as she waited for a response.

She looked up, just realizing the girl was there. She felt embarrased now that she didn't realize how long the girl was standing there. "Oh, Sorry." She said with a shake of her head. "It is pretty fasinating. It has quite a bit of information."

Oakleigh had a scottish accent mixed in with her british accent, but it was lovely to hear. She grabbed her bookmark from her pocket and placed it in the book, keeping her page secure. Placing her book on the table, she looked at the girl across from her. "The author is quite bias though, putting their own personal views on everything." She said with a chuckle.

"I love your glasses. I have some, but I rarely wear them. I mostly wear contacts, or nothing at all most of the time." She said with a smile. "You seem like a kind person. My brother has always told me that I've had a knack for telling if people were kind or not. He's never said if it was a good thing or a bad thing however." She giggled, looking at the tree in the hall before looking back at Jam. "Also, Jam? Is that your name? I'm not saying anything bad. I've just never heard it before. It's very cute. You could be Jammy!" She grinned widely, showing her teeth.

Jam smiled when she heard the other Ravenclaw girl’s accent, it was very pleasant to the ears despite being unique. She had never thought that the blend of a scottish accent and a british accent would be so adorable.

The brunette did not have the other girl pegged as the talkative type, but she was surprised when she started rambling on. Jam found it difficult to recall what exactly was said so that she could reply.

Jam looked up as she formed words in her head, letting a soft hum escape her lips. She decided to start with the book on divination, since that was the thing that drawn her in the first place. “I’ve seen that book around,” Jam nodded as she said thoughtfully, “but I’m quite shocked that you said the author was biased! I didn’t know that informative books could have blatant bias in them!”

The girl then moved on to the next topic. “My glasses?” Jam asked as she removed them from her face. “They aren’t anything special, but thank you so much! I did consider getting contacts, but I’ve grown so used to seeing myself with glasses that my eyes just look kind of weird without them.” The Ravenclaw girl shrugged and gave a crooked smile as she put her glasses back on. She blinked a couple times to refocus her vision, thinking of a reply for the next subject.

“Jammy is a really cute nickname! My older cousin used to call me that and I love it. My name is kind of hard to make a nickname out of it since it’s short, so I appreciate any unique thing my friends call me.” The girl scratched her nape sheepishly. “Well, I do hear that I’m kind often, but I try not to be too much of a pushover y’know? Sometimes it’s hard to just say no to other people, knowing that they specifically asked me for help.”

The girl mentally rewinded the conversation, and despite her coming to the end of topics the other girl had discussed she still doesn’t know her name. “Anyway, you seem like a really nice person too! You’re definitely interesting, but I’d love to make a nickname for you too; granted, you tell me what your name is.” Jam giggled lightly but stopped when she realised how weird it was to be laughing at her own joke. “Yeah um- So what’s your name?”

"Oh- I got off topic. It's Oakleigh. I've often never gotten a nickname with it due to now long and straight forward it is." She chuckled sheepishly. Oakleigh knew she rambled way too much. She was just a very talkitive person, she couldn't help it. It was just something she had gotten used to.

"Also, don't worry about being a pushover. I was one when I was younger. Over the years I've learned to become the person who can say no, but I still help if someone asks me to! Like with homework or anything. But if they're a jerk about it, I won't. I don't tolerate bullies. Not in the slightest." She said with a groan.

Grabbing the book off the table, she pulled her bag up off the ground and placed it on the chair next to her, placing the library book into the bag. The bag was adorned with pins.

Back to the topic at hand. Oakleigh thought that Jam was so cute! Friend way of course. Her flushed face, which it seemed naturally was so cute. Oakleigh had pink cheeks, but it was because of her allergies, so it wasn't cute. Jam's flat nose was also something that she thought complimented her face extremly!

“Oakleigh, huh?” Jam muttered as she tried to pull together the perfect nickname for the girl. She wanted this to be particularly special since this would probably be the first nickname the girl ever had. Oakie? Leigh-Leigh? Just plain Oak? Jam’s head spinned with the possibilities, but none of them sounded quite right. An idea sprung into her head just then, and she smiled wide at her friend, pushing her rosy cheeks upwards. “How about Leigh-Lo? It sounds so cute!! Leigh-Lo!” Jam sounded out excitedly.

The brunette started to flow together with the rhythm of the conversation, and when her excitement dimmed, she found a new topic to talk about. “You know, I’m so excited to go home! Not that I don’t like it here at Hogwarts - I’m absolutely in love with it! I just miss my hometown, and it usually looks its best at this time of year! It’s a true winter wonderland!” Jam halted her own descriptions to ask the girl sitting opposite of her a question, “How about you? What are your plans for this winter?” Jam shifted a little in her seat and crossed her arms in the table, expectant of the other Ravenclaw girl’s response.

"I love Leigh-Lo!" She exclaimed happily. She liked the nickname, it was cute!

"I'm excited to go home. I just have birthdays, more birthdays, christmas and such, and more birthdays." She said with a sigh. Everyday seemed like a birthday for her, whether hers or someone elses. "It never snows where I'm from. It's like spring most the time. When I was eight, I got a bike for christmas. I could ride it because it was like, eighty degrees outside." She said, making her eyes wide to make it more dramitic, her speaking.

"I'm just excited to see my little brother, even though he is annoying." She looked around, making sure no one was listening before leaning closer and whispering. "I'm seeing if I can get my brother a remembrall or something." She kept her head high as she smiled, excited that she had made a friend, in her house as well! "What's your favourite class? Mine is history of magic, divination, and astrology. They're all tied in my favourites." She said with a wide grin. She shook her head, flying her hair out of her face. The cold weather was making it get all frizzy and uncontrolable, which quite annoyed Oakleigh.

Seeing Leigh-Lo smile at the newly appointed nickname, Jam’s lips stretched to form one of her own. “Oh dear, I could never imagine a Christmas without cold weather! It’s all about the vibeee~” Jam said as she looked out a tall window to the snowy landscape outside.

The girl pulled her long hair into a quick low bun, leaving it slightly messy, since she had been accustomed to keeping it that way. “I have a younger sibling too, except I have a sister. I seriously understand how annoying they can be, but honestly I love Marmalade, that’s her name, with my whole heart!” Jam chuckled a little, reminiscing about her perky little sister.

The brunette moved on to the next subject yet again. She quite liked Oakleigh’s tendency to jump from one subject to another so seamlessly. Granted, she would never be able to do that. It was a bother for her, since she liked conversations. She just couldn’t really think of questions to ask other people.

“My favourite classes are totally Potions and Charms! You know, I was just talking about it with my friend a couple days ago!” The Ravenclaw girl went on the same rant about the things she had learnt, except this time she tried to shorten it as to not bore her new friend.

“And the professors literally teach you everything you need to know! I personally love the way they teach here in Hogwarts. I’m not sure whether it’s because I’m learning magic, or the professors really are different from those back home, but either way here is just better!”

Jam wrapped up her rant, leaving it on a positive note. “Well, it was really nice to meet you Leigh-Lo! I probably need to rush off soon, but I hope we get to talk more! It shouldn’t be a problem, right? Since we’re in the same house?”
