Let Us Go to the High Place

The headaches, cramps and pains of the Moon had passed; waning even as the Moon himself was diminishing in the sky overhead. Colin reckoned it was time. Colin had written a letter to his best friend and had sent it to his dear Hufflepuff. But something needed doing first, on this day. The great magical holiday of Hallowe'en was now past. Colin had managed to amass a respectable amount of sweets over the course of the week, but they assaulted his nose with sickly sugar smell. He kept the good chocolate, of course, for that was practically medicine and potion all rolled into one! And indeed he was munching on some chocolate even now. But the sweets, those went to the first and second years of his acquaintance.
If truth be told, the lion share of those sweets actually ended up in the pockets of Jannette Applebottom! But Colin didn't mind. She was a sweetheart and would most assuredly ply him with bacon and sausages for a week!
After classes finished, Colin went down to the appointed place. The fountain in the courtyard. He saw them there. Liam and Ciarán. Liam was smiling. Their little sister looked confused. Colin returned Liam's smile and nodded. "Come, Ci!" was all he said, as, arms over the girl's shoulders, they led her through the grounds and up, far away from the castle. They didn't run and they didn't horse around this time. Surely anyone familiar with Colin and his twin would think they were sick!
The way was long, Colin noted. But he reckoned it was only long because he hardly ever walked up here. He'd always run! And his long legs could carry him far in a short time. Eventually the place came into sight. The stone outcropping in the high meadows above Hogwarts. Ciarán looked from Colin to Liam and back again. Maybe she knew what they were going to do? It had been a long while since Da and their Seanmamó to them up into the high country beyond McCoire House, way above the old stone cottage, and even above the tumbled tower.
Colin and Liam helped their little sister up onto the outcropping and turned her to face each direction in turn. East, then South, then West and then North. She gasped when she saw Hogwarts in the distance, and the Forest and the quidditch pitch beyond the castle. Up here there were no sounds of raucous children or games being played or laughter or tears. No talk of professors. No late explosions from the potions classroom or any sound other than the wind in the heather and the dying leaves rustling on the sleepy trees a way behind.
Colin and Liam took Ciarán into a close embrace and they began to sing. First Colin, then Liam almost immediately after. After a few words, Ciarán understood and joined in.

As the voices stopped singing, for just a moment, perhaps, their echo could be heard among the sleeping trees and the high mountains beyond. The three spoke no other words. And in silence they broke their embrace and Liam went back down to the castle with Ciarán. But Colin remained. Watching them for a long while as he crouched on the stone outcropping. His heart was high and his eyes half closed and his thoughts passed from his siblings to those who had disappeared and to those who had died. Some he knew, or knew of, or knew from history. He wondered how many kids had died in this school. Life, of course, was perilous enough; and magic made it no easier in many respects. Say the wrong thing and you could end up dead. And magic was no proof against fallen human nature: if Muggles had armies and mechanical gonnes, then Wizards had inferi and wands. War was the same for humans of all kinds.
Eventually his thoughts turned towards his friends. To Clair, of course, and Luci, to Rebecca and Jannette, to Qrow and Keith, and of course to his new sister Lily. But it was one friend in particular he felt the need to be with today.

Be thou my vision O Lord of my heart
None other is aught but the King of the seven heavens.
Be thou my meditation by day and by night.
May it be thou that I behold ever in my sleep.
Be thou my speech, be thou my understanding.
Be thou with me, be I with thee
Be thou my father, be I thy son.
May thou be mine, may I be thine.
Be thou my battle-shield, be thou my sword.
Be thou my dignity, be thou my delight.
Be thou my shelter, be thou my stronghold.
Mayst thou raise me up to the company of the angels.
Be thou every good to my body and soul.
Be thou my kingdom in heaven and on earth.
Be thou solely chief love of my heart.
Let there be none other, O high King of Heaven.
Till I am able to pass into thy hands,
My treasure, my beloved through the greatness of thy love
Be thou alone my noble and wondrous estate.
I seek not men nor lifeless wealth.
Be thou the constant guardian of every possession and every life.
For our corrupt desires are dead at the mere sight of thee.
Thy love in my soul and in my heart --
Grant this to me, O King of the seven heavens.
O King of the seven heavens grant me this --
Thy love to be in my heart and in my soul.
With the King of all, with him after victory won by piety,
May I be in the kingdom of heaven, O brightness of the sun.
Beloved Father, hear, hear my lamentations.
Timely is the cry of woe of this miserable wretch.
O heart of my heart, whatever befall me,
O ruler of all, be thou my vision.
Keep your mind in hell; and don't despair.

Let Us Go to the High Place

[quote][quote]
Deepening disconnectedness. It was like a second skin, except instead of being renewed from the inside and sluffing off the old and the dead on the outside, showing a bright, new, radiant layer, this second skin seem to be burrowing inwardly. Slow, but patiently pernicious. Little she did... correction... nothing she did... seemed to halt its steadfast march towards her ultimate what? Catatonia? Madness? Complete and utter despair?
Every instinct she had made her want to do nothing but hole up and not "be" with people. If she were at home, peaceful solitude would surround her. She could snatch as much or as little of it as she chose, when she chose, and recharge. That is what Hogwarts did not allow her to do - recharge. And of course, if at home, she would be near the place and people who, like her, would understand most what they had all lost. There would be mutual healing in that. But that, of course, was not possible.
As she sat completely hidden in the heather with her knees up to her chest, her body convulsed as she cried. She crossed her arms across her kneecaps and just buried her face as the tears flowed. She had become an expert, as of late, at crying in relative silence. It would only disturb her fellow badgers in the bungalow, and maybe even scare them. It would also draw unwanted attention... the very last thing she wanted or needed. As she sat there, gasping for breath and hiccuping a bit in the aftermath of her long cry, she wanted to pray.
But she couldn't.
This, though she might not have fully recognized it at the time, was the root of her disconnectedness. She was a child of great faith and a great believer in the power of prayer. Long before hearing of Grandma Ruth's illness, and each day during, prayer had been her go to place of serenity and solitude. It was baffling to her that it was a struggle to go there now... especially now. Prayer had seen her through everything... her broken-heartedness in the early days of believing that Simon would never be hers, but most especially in the early days after Grandma's Ruth's passing. So why not now?
She allowed herself to fall back into the heather and look up into the sky. It was a typically gray, overcast day, but no threat of storming loomed, and the temperature was mild for November. She dabbed the tears away from her face with the cuff of her sweater jacket and was stopped mid-dab when she heard the distant refrains of what sounded like a choir of voices from upon high. She sat up quickly and looked around her. No one was near. She stilled herself and lay back down. The voices could so clearly be heard and AngelFyre smiled as she looked up into the sky. She knew the song well and began to sing softly, lying there in the heather.
God would not mind her voice. It would honor Him and draw her closer. Something she herself had been unable... or was it actually unwilling?... to do.
The song was her prayer in those moments.
When it ended, it was quiet but she did not feel as desperately disconnected any longer. She continued to gaze into the peachy gray sky and then she heard him. Colin. He had spoken her name. She knew he was not near, but like the song earlier, she heard him clearly. And then a happy smile raced to replace her saddened expression as she hurried to stand and bolted to where she knew he would be.
The High Place.
The Sacred Place.
The soles of her shoes caused scritching sounds as they pressed and kicked loose pebbles against the ancient stone as she crested it. AngelFyre was not at all surprised to see him standing there. She doubted he was surprised to see her. He had probably heard her long before she got there, but for all she knew, he could have caught her scent as well. He told her once what she smelled like to him and she wondered if sadness changed that all.
She stopped short as soon as she saw her Woofy. She thought to run right to him, but she had tapped her energy getting there, so she slowly just walked to him. Her joy at seeing him was no less, but her smile was subsumed into everything she had been feeling all at once... and feeling for too long.
AngelFyre did not raise her arms to enfold him. She just walked over and placed her head on his shoulder. "I -... I had no idea how much you truly hurt last year. I had no idea how inadequate I was to help. I -... I am just so sorry. So, so sorry." And before she could say anything more, she just quietly stood there, head on his shoulder, unable to think or breathe, let alone speak any further.

Let Us Go to the High Place

Colin breathed in the air of the Highlands, watching his brother and sister chase each other through the meadows above Hogwarts. In spite of a certain distancing from some old friends, Colin had never felt happier, never more full of joy than at this moment! Clair filled his heart, as she always did, and enticed his mind towards new pursuits. Liam was with him again and their hearts has fused together where once they were torn asunder. Ciarán filled him with delight as she began her journey into magic; and now Lily, the girl he once knew as troublesome imp, was now his troublesome imp --- his sister in fact.
Colin felt a sense of completeness of perfect connexion. The deep sorrow of the last year, unspeakable and unfathomable, and only partially shared with other, was gone. Healed. In the twinkling of an eye, his life was as one redeemed, bought back from the power who sought only to torment him with grief. Colin felt somehow that other grief would lie ahead. Maybe of someone dear, like Clair or AngelFyre, or perhaps some other grief of his own. But it was as his Seanmamó had said: you have harrowed hell in your grief, both of you. Take on your armour, for you are now prepared to tame that power.
She had smiled when they asked her about that later. One day, soon perhaps, she would die. Ma and Da would too. And Aunt Indigo. Perhaps even one of the twins would face the death of the other. But they had now faced it before. They had tasted its foulth and drunk its bitterness. Colin had certainly felt drained and empty from that feast, but Mamó had said simply: "And yet you have both grown strong from the sapping feast!"
It had taken Colin a long while to sort out what that meant.
Colin smiled.
The breeze brought him news! An air of herbs and verdant growth, of sun on hair and inner strength. His ears caught the shuffling of pebbles on stone. Someone was approaching. Someone he longed to talk with. They hadn't seen each other really since parting ways at Kings Cross back in July. Colin's best friend approached. He knew it would be her. He turned, his bright, pond scum green eyes seeking out her brilliant blues. He found them as she approached. Slowly, almost sickly. Colin's heart dipped. What had happened to his Fyre Angel?
She only placed her head on his shoulder and spoke a few words. She spoke a few words only. Words of apology. It took Colin a moment to sort out what she meant. His heart had been so overflowing the last four months, that he sometimes had to struggle to remember the previous year! But what did she mean inadequate to help!? Colin wanted to draw apart and scold her, for a brief moment. How could she be so silly? She helped him find his would-be murderer! She helped his kin find Liam! If it weren't for her and Clair, Colin had no idea what state he would be in now!
She seemed like someone who had been knocked with a really hard flipendo. Stunned as it were. Just standing with her head on his shoulder. He could smell the salt tears and the heather in her hair. Colin began to wonder. At last, he decided. There was more to this meeting than just two old friends catching up. Colin took AngelFyre's hand. It didn't feel like holding Clair's hand. Well, a little. She was a girl after all! It was a different kind of love, Colin reckoned. Every bit as intense as he felt for Clair; but shaped more like that he felt for Lily or Ci.
He held her hand tightly as the world closed in around them.
He drew her down to sit on the stone seat. The same place he had revealed to her the hit letter. That piece of parchment that cemented not only his family's fate, but also his friendships with this girl and with Clair. Colin's eyes bored into AngelFyre's. He was looking for something. Usually when he did this, it was to determine if a person could be trusted. But Colin trusted AngelFyre with his life already, and had always. If this were Clair, he would be looking to see her love for him returned.
Colin blushed slightly. If this were Clair, he would surely kiss her right about now!
But no. His eyes searched and found only sorrow. The kind that had haunted his own reflexion in the mirror for the last year. Colin was no Seer, but he was a poet, and poets, his Seanmamó was fond of saying, often times saw further than any Seer, and sometimes far deeper. And he had harrowed hell. His heart told him that AngelFyre was suffering so very deeply.
At last he spoke. His voice was soft, gentle.
"AngelFyre," he began. His lips trembled. His eyes defocussed from this world. "I---"
She walks in shadows and darkness.
The hard stone rises to meet her feet.
Sun pales and Moon quails. And cold saps her blood.
The White Lady spreads her feast.
She eats and becomes empty.
She drinks the proffered cup and yet thirsts. And bitterness fills her.
He finds the path and the way and comes.
His feet know the stones for has trod here before.
Sun and Moon fade. And the stars above are cruel.
He sits at table and stays her hand.
He has eaten his emptiness.
He has drunk the cup that is always full and never fills. He knows her heart bleeds.
She walks in shadows and darkness.
He takes her hand and lifts her from that place.
Let us walk in shadow together, through the valley where is death. Fear not the White Lady.
He leads her away, their feet treading together.
He brings her away from fear. Far from the darkness.
Her heart he lightens. He has known her heart from before. And grieves.
Colin fell silent. His eyes slowly regained focus. Tears filled them. He wasn't sure if it was magic he was doing or not, but it felt much deeper. He held AngelFyre's hands as if he wouldn't let them go. He would wait, letting AngelFyre pour out her heart here in the high place. The sacred place.

Let Us Go to the High Place

[quote][quote]
As Colin took her hand and drew her down to sit next to him on the stone seat, AngelFyre complied with no resistance. She rather imagined she was more rag doll in that moment than anything else, easily made to bend and do another's bidding as opposed to her own. It was not so much that she did not care about the events going on around her or the people within her orbit these days. That was not the case at all. Her ability to care was still present. She knew that. What was missing, however, was the energy to deal with any of it. She just felt shut down. Darkened. Disappeared a bit from herself and most definitely from the world.
She knew Colin was confused, and a whole lot concerned. She knew because he was still and quiet. He was searching her eyes. She smiled a small smile as she thought searching his eyes would be exactly the thing she would do with him if their positions were reversed. Then she momentarily thought back to finding him out here last year and learning of Liam's death. Had she searched his eyes then for answers?
She could not remember, and moreover, the effort to do so quickly overwhelmed her. Details she did not remember right this moment from that time. But the feelings? Oh! Those she definitely remembered. His grief. His shock. His anguish. His guilt. Even his rage. And then something soul-deep quickened within her as she felt, more than she remembered, the "after" of their time together that day.
"AngelFyre, I---" she heard him almost whisper and then she fixed her full and quiet attention to her poet brother as he transcended their here and their now to go to his own soul-deep place. She had been privileged to bear witness to these moments of his a few times, and they never failed to mesmerize her. She was never certain where his thoughts "went" in these moments, exactly, and did not know if Colin himself even knew, but there was an ethereal quality to it that never failed to quicken AngelFyre's own soul when he did. She was not even completely certain it was just his thoughts that left in those instances as magic was a powerful, and still a mostly elusive thing to her.
The Poet and the Seer. Not the same, but not so awfully different either. A golden thread connecting them is always what her mind's eye envisioned in these moments with him and the gentle vibrations that moved along it is what she felt. She listened and watched as Colin recited and like his, her eyes filled with tears as well at the conclusion. She felt his grip tighten and she sat motionless, silent for a time, as she thought on what he had just said.
"For the first time in my life, Colin, I think I am having a crisis of faith, and it is leaving me feeling lost, ungrateful and a traitor to who I thought I was and all I thought I believed. Am I just a fraud?" Her whole body shuddered and her eyes closed tightly as she expressed her fear and sorrow out loud. "My Grandma Ruth died in August. She died. I knew she was going to. We all will. But... but... the pain of it is near unbearable." She was interrupted at this point by a bout of silent tears and when the flow had been staunched, she continued, her voice a little raspier and shakier than before.
She turned her body to him and spilled the sorrow loop she felt she had been caught up in the last couple of months. "I believe in our Lord. You know I do. I know there are hurts that come to us in this fallen world, but I was not brought up to know or to believe in magic. I am confused as to what part that plays for me. How do I reconcile it? Is my magic good or evil? What is its source? Is it the Lord? Is it not of the Lord? You were brought up with magic and you are a believer. You also told me once that you knew about the source of magic. What is it? Who is it? Does it come from God? And if so, why am I not allowed to use the good it can do to help those I love, even if they are Muggles?"
She stopped long enough to take a deep breath. She was unaware that the more she had spoken the faster she had spoken, but AngelFyre was definitely aware that her questions were heavy and plentiful. She also did not honestly expect Colin to have the answers. It was just a relief to be able to unload them.
"I have so often thought of you and your pain at Liam's loss last year and knew you would understand, probably better than anyone I know, what this agony feels like. How, Colin? How can I get past it and get back on my faith journey? I know God is big enough to bear my anger and confusion, but what scares me is not knowing whether I am big enough to bear it."
She turned to look out over the Highlands and a brisk, autumnal breeze chilled the tracks of her tears on her face. "How do I get back to me?" she asked plaintively.
Yet one question had not been spoken aloud. The absolute Goliath of her fears loomed large and remained just that... unspoken.
How would I ever survive the pain if something were to happen to Simon?
