Kevin was exhausted from his first class day, handling a wand for the very first time in his life was more tiring than he had expected. He was now wandering into a second floor corridor, perhaps a little bit lost. Kevin was still amazed by the castle’s beauty, the stained glasses had let light in that came in a pink light from the downing sun which made a wonderful light show in the corridor. After he had checked that he was alone, he took a break, detached his first shirt button and sat down on the closest stone bench. Putting his hand is his pocket he pulled out a folded piece of photograph. It was a family portrait with an old French Townhouse in the background. Nowadays everything was different, his parents were divorced, his mother and him moved to the United Kingdom to live with her sister. The eleven years old boy felt very sad looking at the picture, not about all the changes that had happened in his life, but for the lack of his family. It was a very understandable feeling for a boy of his age. Despite how proud he was from the idea of becoming a wizard, he wanted at this precise moment to run into his mother’s house and feel the comforting warmth of a mother. These thoughts gave him tears in his eyes. It was about time to join the other students for dinner but he couldn’t, he needed that moment. A sound of footsteps in the corridor forced him to recover himself and quickly chase his nascent tears and looked up to see who was coming, still holding his picture in his hand.

Phoebe walked down the corridor, mentally exhausted from her dreadfully lengthy History of Magic lesson. She despised classes that didn't have any hands-on learning. It was simply too boring for her to actually pay attention. She knew she couldn't blame the teacher, though, because it wasn't really a hands-on subject. She sighed heavily, quite frustrated.

Phoebe wondered if she should skip dinner and just go straight to her dorm. She was too exhausted to deal with the loud noises from her peers, and honestly, she just wasn't hungry. All day she had been thinking about her parents, counting every hour, every second until Christmas Eve. Just a few days were left, and Phoebe truly had no idea how she would deal with it when the day actually came. She visibly cringed just thinking about it.

Phoebe hadn't realized there was another person in the corridor until she barely missed tripping over their feet. She stopped herself a mere few inches in front of them, taking a small hop to help her regain her balance. She looked up at the person, quickly noticing their glossy eyes.

"Are you alright?" she asked, reaching into her pocket. She grabbed a white handkerchief with blue orchids decorating the sides and handed it to the boy. She didn't see any tears, but his face clearly expressed some form of sadness. That just wouldn't do. Phoebe sat down next to him, hoping she could help in some way.

The footsteps were a first year ones. After she had arrived close to him and asked if he was fine, she offered to him her white handkerchief.
Kevin was disoriented, the flow of his thoughts had been brutally interrupted by this apparition. He looked up at the napkin and figured out, not without shame, that the girl had saw his nascent tears. Ghosted by his dad’s words about a man who cries, he refused dryly :

« No I don’t need it, I just need a moment alone …»

The aggressiveness was actually not the best answer when someone tries to help you. The boy realized his mistake too late …
His face became red and he tried to said some words to repair his clumsiness, but  nothing understandable came out from his mouth. Then he took a deep breath and looked down at his piece of photography, finally saying, without looking at her.

« You’ll think I’m stupid … but I miss my family… Hogwarts is a very big place and I don’t feel at home here, too many people, too much space… It’s stupid, isn’t it ? »

He dreamed for some many years to be enrolled in BeauxBâtons, the French witch and wizard school, Hogwarts was like a punishment, a consequence of the recent burst of his family life.
But he probably just needed a welcoming hand to help him.

After a brief moment of silence, Phoebe sat next to the boy on the bench. She held the kerchief in her hand that rested on her lap, ready to hand it to him just in case a few tears managed to slip. She smiled gently as a sign of comfort.

"No, I don't think it's stupid at all. I don't even live as far away from this school as many other students, and I still often feel out of place. Your accent tells me you're French, and assuming your family is still in France, you must feel even more lonely than I." Phoebe crossed her ankles, trying to put herself in a more comfortable sitting position. "It takes guts to be where you are, and I'm sorry for your discomfort. Once you find some friends who are kind and accepting, the weight of everything will seem almost nonexistent."

Phoebe looked around the corridor, making sure it was still empty. She knew how embarrassing it was to be caught in the act of being emotional. She took a deep breath and leaned her back against the wall.

"If it makes you feel any better, most people are uncomfortable within the first couple of years at Hogwarts. I'm certain you'll get comfortable later on," she said, anxiously fiddling with the handkerchief. She always became nervous when attempting to give advice, because there have been a few times where the receiver of her advice got mad at her either because she said something slightly offensive to them or because she ended up being wrong later on. She bit her lip, wondering if anything she told him made any sense.

Kevin felt that she was trying to be as comforting as possible, and he was thankful for this. He looked at her nice grey eyes and smiled. He then he handed his family photo to her.

"This photo had been taken few months before I left Paris with my mother. My dad is still there" he said while she was looking down at the piece of photography. "I'll not see him till Christmas... I miss him sometimes."

Then the boy started to daydream about his father and all the good moments they had shared together. Kevin's dad was a tall man with a very handsome face. He broke up with his wife after she had figured out that he had a mistress at the French ministry of magic where he works.
Kevin drove out his thoughts and continued to talk to the friendly girl :
"After a family issue, I came to England with my mother. So here I am "

He felt better after saying what he had on his mind. He began to want to know more about this girl who was so kind.
"I'm Kevin by the way, are you a new student like me ? " he asked while he held out his hand.

Phoebe blinked, preparing herself for the answer she would provide for him. She turned her head towards Kevin and offered him a smile.

"Yes, actually. I am a first year. It's kind of strange, because I'm much shorter than many other first years. I feel like I should still be in diapers compared to them." Phoebe laughed, placing the handkerchief back in her pocket. She wouldn't be needing it anytime soon.

Phoebe attempted to get comfortable again, scooting backwards where she sat. Her feet dangled from the bench, but she didn't mind much. After all, she was used to it.

The girl then pulled out a goodie bag of peppernuts from her other pocket. She opened it and pulled out one of the dime-sized biscuits, taking small nibbles of it. She glanced over at Kevin and back at the bag, contemplating whether or not she should share them.

After a few seconds of contemplating, she held the bag of peppernuts out to Kevin, attempting to be generous. "Would you like some? The house-elves let me make them. They may seem quite standoffish, but they were really nice to let me make these. I even gave them some, the nice fellows." Phoebe held the bag out to him, smiling warmly.
