The next set of attacks was a bit of a disappointment. Then again, not all racers were talented multi-taskers. Colin couldn't conjure a blindfold to take out Finnegan but at least it didn't blindfold him! Alyssea had her fair share of casting failures that quickly turned the tables against her. It would've been nice for that blindfold to hit its mark, though. The blindfolds were a crazy opening move that Alyssea was glad worked out in the end for her badgers.

As for Ulysses, the chance to finally gain vengeance on all the thrown rocks went... well, it didn't. Even with the speed everyone was going, Argahlon still managed to evade the rocks. Better luck next time.

Of course, good things must come to an end. Helena had been cruising through the track, but the rocks had to come get her eventually. Some people just weren't built for narrow passageways. Still, Alyssea screamed, "GO HELENA!" in loyal badger fashion. She bled yellow, after all.

Ulysses was still at the back, but that extra push he gave Raizel might've given her an edge against Finnegan. Let's see...

Alyssea winced as Raizel hit the thorns. Those wounds would sting against the cold air. Alyssea could only hope she had some potions on her to counter the bleeding or at least have a painkiller on her to distract from it. Finnegan, as always, continued cruising along. Honestly, it looked like it was too easy for him.

But then Finnegan slowed down and Raizel zoomed past, almost as if she didn't just catch the thorns. What was Finnegan doing now? Alyssea turned to the stands to make sure the bounty hadn't gone up since she last looked. It was still at 20 galleons, unsurprisingly. She turned back to the track and continued further down to watch Raizel. She'll figure it out later.

Of course, Raizel was a duellist and duellists tend to be noodly-armed. She fell right off her broom and hit the ground. Alyssea winced. She was bleeding and she hit the ground hard. It would no doubt be painful with the open cuts and bruised muscles.

Alyssea could not tell who was gonna make it to the finish line. Well, she hoped someone would without passing out mere millimetres before it.

Everything went by so fast and who would've thought that things could go wrong… well, Raizel did think of it. Since when did things go her way exactly? She wasn't just expecting to hit this hard.

She was zooming through the air, focusing more on her flying as she doesn't want to keep falling behind but that was probably a mistake for she's not even that experienced in flying. No, she's no racer, she's no Quidditch Player either, she's a duellist. Why on earth is a duellist racing here then? For fun, for the thrill, to do something new other than dueling. Then again, this might just make Raizel think that she should've just stayed within the walls of the dueling club and on that piste.

Thorns tore through her clothing, ruining the shirt that she's wearing and a bit of blood staining on where she was scratched. "Ack!" Stinging pain creeped up to her body as she continued to fly through the cold air, gritting her teeth and bearing the pain. Her body was already full of bruises from the crashing that had happened to her and now, adding more to that, are bleeding wounds.

Did the pain stop there? No, for 1 minute she was up in the air and the next she was already on the ground with worse aches than before. She could feel her body already screaming at her to stop this nonsense in every move she makes to try and stand back up or even just to sit down and gather the strength to get back in there and cross that finish line. It doesn't have to be her to be the winner, all she wants was to see if she could make it past that finish line. Her first race was a blur so she can't remember if she crossed that line so she must finish this one.

"Damn it!" She curses under her breath, scanning the area to where her broom is. "No… I can still keep going!" Right, giving up is not an option, not yet anyway but can her body even answer that determination of hers? She'll just see cause right now, the ground is looking kind of cozy for her body.

This was Arg’s first broom race and he was having a blast regardless of the minor injuries he would sustain. This was the very first time he was able to keep his mind off things that would normally throw him in a spiral. Maybe it was the cold air, or the pain from the obstacles within the race itself. Either way, Arg may have found one of the sports that he really enjoyed at Hogwarts. Quidditch was still his favorite, but it seemed that Broom Racing was a close second now that he was enjoying himself.

With the icy wind still pelting against Arg’s face, he pushed down slightly on the broom and cruised through the narrow passageway, and finally made it through the next unit without getting hurt this time. It was surprising to say the least because the young redhead was not the best at flying and this was only his second time actually feeling comfortable on a broom. Not only that, but it was his very first time using projectiles while on it, too. It was all for good fun, right? Who knows!

When Arg closed the distance on the waterfall, he managed to make it by with ease that added a bit of confidence to the young Gryffindor. It seemed that he was far behind most of the others and that was the case. This is why he was trying to burst through each obstacle at max speed. Big risk, yet an even bigger reward if successful. He grinned at the sight of yet another narrow passageway in the distance and Arg did not slow down one bit, which was a bit of a mistake on his end.

As the narrow passageway came up, Argahlon Vexius attempted to squeeze by without hitting any of the rocks. Unfortunately, he clipped one, which sent the Gryffindor into a spiral in mid-air. Within a few short seconds of regaining control, Arg pulled up and turned towards the left just enough to get back on track. He could see two others not far ahead, so he continued on and tried their best to catch up.

Agh! Broom racing was so exhilarating and so frustrating at the same time! Again Conner escaped Colin's wand work. Not because of any particular skill of his own, but because Colin managed to forget a key part in any spell casting --- the wand movement! Some spells are point and shoot, but others actually require more than just stabbing at the air with one's wand! Colin zoomed on as this realisation dawned.

Colin would have to pay closer attention to what he was doing!

He wondered. Clearly Conner was a good flier; and Colin always had doubts about his own abilities on the broom stick. More than once he had thought he was the reason for the Basilisks' crappy record for the last two years. Maybe werewolves just weren't meant to fly? Colin shook his head. This was no time to be thinking like this!

He scanned the course ahead.

He smirked as Rai plowed straight through the thorns, getting herself all cut up, while Conner minced along as dainty as a butterfly! Colin wondered at that. It seemed like the Gryffindork hadn't so much as brushed a single obstacle! Curious. He had also wondered for some time if the Basilisks weren't cursed in some way. Colin's self doubts aside, he knew the team had solid captains and good racers. Yet, the only race they'd ever won was a tie because everyone was eaten by a forest?

Sus. Susser. And Sussest! Maybe there was some Gryffindork that had put some kind of hex on the Slytherin brooms? Or some flying charm on the Gryffindor brooms? Colin's lips pursed. It would be like them. Yet Rai was a Gryff too! And --- oof! Colin's eyes widened as his team mate got blown off her broom way up ahead! Oh no!

This put Conner back in the lead! Colin could only shout: "Get back on yer broom lass! You can do it!" and hope that Rai wouldn't lose too much time!

Every single second that his cousin, Helena Rose, zipped past him (and from where he was and what he could see) it made the young Slytherin feel a mixture of absolute embarrassment and immense praise for his cousin who seemed a bit directionless when it came to what she wanted and what she could do. Perhaps, and just maybe, they would be Broom Racers during their time at Hogwarts.

He had a lot more growing to do, because this was a showing that no one could possibly be proud of. The race wasn't over yet though and he'd continue to zoom forward, full force leaning to force his room to quick speeds through these next portions of the race while in the distance he could see what looked like rushing water.

' Well great. ' The First Year mused to himself, shaking his head as he kept the thoughts of inadequacy out and simply visualized winning with the radical wolf and the lion who actually wasn't as bad as some of the others that he met through his short time at Hogwarts but this was his team and no matter what, this would absolutely be a core memory for the boy moving forward.

☙ A Cruising Start to November, 4th of November 2023 ❧

Somehow he managed to get through the thorns without a scratch on him. Maybe it was more luck than skill, but he couldn't help but feel proud, especially when he heard someone crashing into the ground not too far behind him. He didn't bother to look over his shoulder to check who it was, last time he'd done that, he'd grazed his way through one of the narrow passageways. Not that there was much to check. It had to be @Raizel Voltrouz, considering how close see had been to catching up with him. He had half a mind to help his fellow Gryffindor back up, but his desire to rub victory in Elsian's face won out against his chivalrous instincts.

The obstacles ahead were tough, though perhaps a little less challeging than the thorns. In theory, he should be able to keep his lead and get to the finish line first. Reality was always different in sports though, he'd played enough Quidditch and soccer to know that. He leaned forward on his broom again, picking up the pace while also making himself small and hopefully harder to hit. The other team had demonstrated their utter disregard for safety and the closer he got to the finish line, the more they'd probably try to fling at him. Well, if they actually managed to hit for once, that was...

Helena kept focusing ahead. The young Hufflepuff girl felt it would be best not focus highly on her competition but the obstacles in front of her.
Even though the young girl knew there was not much for her to accomplish besides helping her team to get victory that was all Helena could do and focus on was winning or at least managing to.
Helena also worried about her cousin he was behind her or at least she figured he was sense she was fairly ahead of the other members of his team.
Helena sighed softly before gripping her broom her eyes squinted as she felt a sense of courage and burning flame of determination swell inside her heart.

Feeling her golden blonde hair swish around her the loose strands that were not in her ponytail seemed to dance behind the golden haired girl. She kept a decent grip on her broom as she managed to keep flying at a slightly faster speed than she had been doing after all she felt a bit daring at this moment and wanted to help her team win if that was possible she wanted to try at least and that was the least she could do for her comrades.

Third time's the charm, people say, as Colin's second Obscuro finally hit Finnegan. Even though Finnegan was no longer in the lead, Alyssea knew that was gonna be a setback. Would Finnegan ever recover from that? Only time would be able to tell as the race went on.

As for Ulysses, the poor boy tried to throw a rock but his target was way out of range for it to even make a splash. That was the thing about racing; you needed to balance out your movement and your hostile actions or else you'll end up being too far behind. Still, he was catching up, one way or another.

The thorns came to claim even more victims. Now half of the racers were bleeding. Blood-replenishing potions sounded good right about now, but Alyssea was no potioneer nor an avid potions fan. Maybe someone else in the race had a knack for potions that would just throw one out.

As one lion recovered her broom and took to the skies again, two more (one lion and one badger) replaced the fallen. Alyssea winced. These guys were a bit more noodly-armed than she thought. Didn't Finnegan play Quidditch? The high winds should've been nothing for him. Regardless, the force of the fall would've been merciless, Alyssea imagined, and even worse for Helena as she was bleeding. She was pretty much in the same situation as Raizel earlier except now Raizel was back on her broom.

Alyssea took a second to turn to the stands again. The bounty only went up by a galleon, but she still chuckled. Oh, who was going to walk back to the castle 21 galleons richer today?

Bleeding, bruised, she could feel her strength slowly weakening as time passed by but would that stop her? No. She heard Colin called out, telling her to get back to her broom and yes, that she'll do. She can't let her team down no matter how cozy the ground was starting to look like. The show must go on after all… even if you get hurt doing so. She winced as she mounted her broom, feeling the aches from her body. Ah, the bandaging charm would be so nice right now but sadly, she didn't learn it… for now anyway. She didn't think that it would be useful till now. Perhaps it was time to do more… advance studies.

Raizel was back up in the air, regaining her balance on her broom and was just in time to see others plummeting towards the ground, making her flinch. Well, that sure will bring them enough time to catch up and it has stopped the other team from getting further ahead.

"Okay, steady…" Raizel uttered, taking a deep breath to calm herself and ignore the pain from all the wounds and bruises that she had received and getting her head back in the game. "You can do this." Things seem to be in their favor this time. While Ulysses was still nowhere to be seen near them, Colin was close and she briefly saw him fire a spell towards Finn but she didn't get to see what it was. She was too busy getting back in the race, ignoring her body screaming at her to stop and give up, go back indoors where it was safer and sleep back in the common rooms.

"It’s cold, why does it have to be so damned cold out! I hate this weather." Argahlon was muttering some hateful words, as he continued to cruise through the open sky. He knew better not to fly too high up, because the obstacles were mainly much lower to the ground, which would cause him to bring the broom up and down several times. That alone would cause him to slow down, which is why he remained right where he was. The cold air was a factor as well. The young Gryffindor had something against this type of weather ever since he could remember. Something about the cold just made him stiff and useless. But here he was, trying his best to stay in the race with everyone else.

As Argahlon made their way through the thorns that seemed to stretch out across the entire pathway, he was struck several times, causing their robe to rip along with some nice slices of flesh as well. The pain was bearable and Arg had no intentions of stopping anytime soon. There was one thing on his mind and that was making it to the end of the track. Even with the high winds coming up, he ducked down on the broom and attempted to speed right through them without any trouble at all. And that was exactly what the Gryffindor did. He felt like he was catching up, but had no idea who was in what position, so he remained speeding through the cold winds above, while trying to burst forward as fast as possible.
