Jesse: So, it's been exactly...a month and two days since it happened , and yes I'm counting. I'm recording this on the tape recorder my dad gave me on my birthday, which was two days after the incident. No, one day. I have to keep the dates in order or it'll mess up everything. So it all started on May 6th, 2017, and I really want to know what's going on.

It made it way worse when no one else knew either, but April—my sister, in case the government hears this, she didn't do anything—she said that maybe I'm a X-men, like I have telekinesis or some cool power. I don't feel like a mutant, even though my brother's cooking would probably turn someone into one. His rotisserie chicken tastes like a dead squirrel ten thousand years old—oop, I shouldn't have said that, he's in the next room.

SOOOO—[heavy breathing and sound of crinkling paper] I'm eating popcorn, I'm hungry [loud crunches] So. I should mention what happened, it was mostly just weird. On the day before my birthday, I didn't tell anyone this but I was just...[sighs] I was really sad. I felt bad for my parents, they're not doing well and my mum's always sick, everytime we go to visit she's in bed, she can barely move her bloody neck to look at me! And–and my dad, he doesn't even know how to handle it, all he does is drink, work at the flimsy factory, and take her to the hospital, he won't let me or my brother help! He's so mean—

[door opens]

Voice: What are you doing?

Jesse: [is quiet for a moment] I'm just doing school work. Last day stuff.

Voice: Uh, okay. But it's the last week of school—

Jesse: It's my honor class essay, they want us to write about what we plan to do ...for the summer educationally. To be productive.

Voice: Jay... just...be careful, and you know what I mean, or you're really going to Burgess. [door shuts]

Jesse: ...that was my brother, William. Um. He's talking about this dumb school for girls called Burgess Hill, and I will not be going there, I swear. Even though it doesn't sound that bad...I don't want my parents to think I'm a big problem for my brother, or anyone...people just don't know how to think on the positive side of things sometimes.

[audible crunches] My brother takes care of my sisters and I, April and Margo. They're fifteen and seventeen, years older, and I'm the youngest kid—so far—so I get away with more, even though I don't think of it that way. Margo definitely does though, sometimes I think she hates me, she gets mad at everything I do and says I just want attention. After what recently has been happening though she just looks kind of scared or worried, maybe both, and she doesn't get mad at me so much. I think she's scared of me....

[barely audible sniffles] So...on the night before my birthday—[crinkling paper] we tried to—[static]—Nobody saw the person—[static]—street lamp—[static]—I couldn't find my phone, or my glasses, and—[static]—this popcorn taste disgusting now, it's burnt—[static]—be right—[door opens and closes]

Voice: [door opens] Is she downstairs?

Willam: Thanks to your terrible popcorn making.

Voice: Wow, you can not talk. Anyway, what are we supposed to look for—

William: I don't know, just please hurry up. You know how she takes ten steps at a time.

Voice: [snorts] ...her room is always clean like a hospital.

William: She said she was doing work for school when I came before. [Rustling paper] Look. [Scoffs] She really just wrote a two page story about onion powder and guacamole. Pretty interesting too—

Voice: Anyway, I'm looking in her—[curses] she's coming, come on—

William: I thought you hid the butter?

Voice: April probably put it—come on—oh, hey.

Jesse: What are you doing?

William: Margo lost her lighter, just checking—

Jesse: You know April touches everything in the House, you should've asked her...duh. Oh, you read my essay—I mean, my story, the one not for school. Yes...the essay is on my desk—

Margo: Okay, we get that you lied,

William: What are you actually doing?

Jesse: Why didn't you just ask? I was drawing a picture for Margo's birthday, next month...[rustling paper]

Margo: Um...

William: Jay—

Jesse: I know it's not the best but I didn't want anyone to see it—[static]—mum and dad—[static]

William: Okay, okay...just... remember what I said.

Margo: [whispers] Liar.

William: Margo, come on.

Jesse: [long silence] I kicked it under my bed, I'll leave it there for now, I only have a few batteries left for it and it's really old. So...this is all just sad. I hope I'm not some adopted alien, even though I look a lot like Margo and my mom. That person I saw with a pointy hat that night creeped me so bad, I hope it was just a nightmare. [Rustling] Okay, some I gonna hide this in a place not even April knows about, and she's the queen of finding things. [More rustling] Okay...I'll tell about everything else later, luckily I was drawing for my sister. They can't know about the recorder...God, I feel like they're not going to like me anymore...[indistinct crying] I'm scared...[Rustling] They—

Jesse: [Loud breathing] Hey... yes...wow, it's from my dad, don't judge, ha. Oh, it's on, okay come here. [clears throat] This is my friend Elaina, and guess what? She went to Burgess! She got kicked out though because...

Elaina: Your brain has a loose screw or something, you always forget. Some weird girl—

Jesse: I didn't forget, I paused to let you get a chance to explain.

Elaina: Ohh, right. But there was this girl who was always shy and didn't like being around people. And one day the girls who had super rich parents and thought they were princesses went too far and bullied her right before the pagent, which she didn't like, and it was the last straw, so she went all out, dressed really well and beat the rich girls. They wanted revenge but it would've been too obvious that it was their fault, because they always won, so they told me to do it, to do the Big Thing.

Jesse: This is the funniest part—

Elaina: So since I'm her roommate—yeah, what a coincidence, right—they told me to prank her so bad that she'd leave the school forever. But what they didn't know was that both of us were actual witches—spell-casting, broom-flying, potion-brewing witches!

Jesse: Like me!

Elaina: Yes, except that you're a Muggle-Born. But—

Jesse: ...what does that mean?

Elaina: You're not—[static]—parents are Purebloods. That means that I descend from a line of wizards who never meddled with muggles. Muggles are humans with no magic, they're like lions without teeth, cobras without venom, or...anything without power.

Jesse: So... that's what you call my family...

Elaina: Well everyone except you, you're a witch!

Jesse: That seems even more insulting, how you say it—

Elaina: Well, that's what my mother tells me to say, the truth, I mean. If you're a witch, your gift, it's the only one you got—

Jesse: Actually, when I was a muggle, I was still gifted, maybe not in the Dark Arts or potion making, like you, but I was good at something.

Elaina: [sighs] Good at muggle things—

Jesse: You should continue with your story, you might have to go soon.

Elaina: ...fine. So where was I—the shy girl, Madelyn, I told her about what the girls were planning—and this was only last year—[static and paper rustling]

Jesse: You're ruining the audio!

Elaina: I'm trying to find a photo to show your little device.

Jesse: It can't record images, it's a speech recorder, only. We're not making a video.

Elaina: Wow, your thing is pretty ancient then, right?

Jesse: [growls] Just—

Elaina: Okay, sorry. It is getting late, too. [Crunching noises] So...since we were both witches and since I told her what they wanted me to do—it would've been funnier if she were a muggle—we decided to prank the girls, and boy was it a prank! Of course it involved magic—my sister taught me some stuff, we proud Purebloods—but Madelyn said we shouldn't do too much because the Ministry and whatnot. I agreed, we were supposed to just use an illusion where they look in a mirror and have a terrible reflection but to everyone else they look normal. But they go around feeling insecure and ugly and hate themselves, the dumb muggles.

So of course I told her I would follow the plan, she would find the spell and we would cast it on each girl. But I chose Jane, and she's the most horrid muggle in existence. I decided to make her actually look horrendous, she and her best friend, Olivia. They actually looked terrible, like the evil hags in the stupid etories, because they act just like them. And oh, it was hilarious! But then the Ministry found out and I got kicked out, well, not the girl. They had to change to get a bunch of Obliviators, and made it seem like I painted over their faces with sharpies, my face was all over the Daily Prophet, and—and, it was just so funny. [Sounds of laughter]

Jesse: Yeah, kind of. It was more mean.

Elaina: Don't ruin the vibe, Jay—

Jesse: It's Jesse.

Elaina: Well that's all I heard your cute brother say...

Jesse: You're my age!

Elaina: So? How old is he? He doesn't even have a beard.

Jesse: He's twenty-three, almost twenty-four, and we're ten!

Elaina: Only thirteen years.

Jesse: Um...so, what are you going to do now? That you're kicked out?

Elaina: Well, I have about a year until I can go to Hogwarts, my birthday is in March, luckily, so I'll turn eleven before the school year starts.

Jesse: Hogwarts?

Elaina: ...really? You're basically a muggle in a witch's clothing, for all we know. Hogwarts is the best school in the wizarding world, that's what my mother says. It's one of the schools wizards go to learn witchcraft and wizardry, and I can't wait to go. There are four Houses, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw—oh, is that my mother? [Loud commotion downstairs]

She must've used the floo powder, even with muggles around! I want to be as daring as her!

Jesse: You mean as careless...

[long silence]

Jesse: She's gone, I think. But what was she going on about, Houses and schools for witches...well, it actually sounds a bit amazing. Maybe I can see more witches, hopefully they're not as conceited as her...I can't believe you can travel through a fireplace, and I don't know if that's advanced or primitive, either. I want to learn about these...things. I haven't been able to do anything strange again, I think it's because I'm so calm now, it's like a lot of energy built up was released, almost...

But the fireplace! We're at my Aunt's home and she thankfully isn't home to see the terrible mess everywhere! Elaina's mother forgot that my family is almost all muggles and Margo almost had a heart attack! Imagine green fire burning suddenly from the fireplace, harmless, she said, but still scary, and you were just doing off nearby. Luckily April was there either, she went to a cosplau convention...when the Ministry came to obliviate my family, April volunteered, she said she knew she wouldn't be able to keep it a secret and I cried for hours and hours, she's my best friend and now I have to keep the biggest secret of my life from her.

Now only my brother and Margo knows, because we definitely can't hide anything from her, but she's great at keeping secrets. So...I need to find out more about the wizarding world, the world I'm supposedly apart of. I'm have online school for now, until William figures things out. Maybe I can go to Hogwarts, it's probably better than any school I know if it has witches and wizards. [Scuffling noise] I have to go, I might record again around Halloween.

Jesse: Okay, so this will be a short recording. I'm getting ready for Halloween—[scruffling noises, hard breathing]—and I can't find my—[static]—[loud noises]—my sister, Margo—well, you probably know her name by now. She gave me this ginormous makeup kit and I'm definitely going to use it. It's almost like small luggage, the thing! And all of the colors, brushes, and everything—[large bang]

Voice: [door creeks open] Um—

Jesse: I'm trying to find it—

Voice: Sis, who are you taking to?

Jesse: Oh, hey—hey, April! Um, what—

April: Do you have a guy in here or something? Hiding? Kissing, maybe?

Jesse: NO, what in God's name—April!

April: It would explain a lot, actually. I sense a lot of secrecy around here and it seems to revolve around you.

Jesse: I'm actually busy doing something important!

April: Halloween is as important as a forgotten piece of lint.

Jesse: It's just like your cosplay, you dress up—

April: Um, cosplay is an art, sweetie, Halloween is a fashion show hosted by babies.

Jesse: You're only fourteen...

April: Fourteen is old enough not to be ten.

Jesse: ...you can go now.

April: After you share at least half a secret.

Jesse: No.

April: A quarter?

Jesse: No.

April: A penny?

Jesse: What's a penny?

April: It's American money, a quarter is too.

Jesse: Well, get out!

April: That's why your kit is in my room. Ha! [Door slams]

Jesse: APRIL!! [Door opens] Oh, almost forgot—

Jesse: Okay—[rustling]—I... I'm...no, I'm going down Shelbourne, Road. Shelbourne Road, yes, other kids will be there—what? It's something for my costume, I'll show you later—God, you act like you're my dad sometimes instead of just my brother. I know—[rustling]—'kay, bye!

Finally. I brought my recorder with me, just in case something happens to me and they need evidence of the truth. If my brother even knew a sliver about what was happening, he'd ban me from Halloween until I move out, so I have to stay safe. For some reason I feel like it's more dangerous being a wizard than not being one, especially on spooky days like this.

[Distant voices] There's a group of girls coming from April's school...the recorder is hidden inside my shirt, I added a microphone a few weeks ago...hold on—want to catch what they are saying—

Dianna: I saw Brian, oh my gosh, he dressed up as the school mascot, so lame.

Lesley: Did you see his sister? She was so ugly in that thing—[fake puking and laughter heard] Who dresses up as Star Wars characters, especially the ugly ones?

Madelyn: I don't know, I think Jabba the Hut suits her just fine. [group laughter]

Lesley: Ha, ha! I'm so glad you came to our school, Maddie, you're hilarious—

Jesse: Okay, I think they were getting suspicious, I had to move. But Maddie...she seems familiar, I wonder if she's the same girl Elaina was talking about. [Rustling] Hello? April? No, this isn't—very funny. Okay, I saw these girls, from your school, and I was wondering if you remember a girl named Madelyn? Yes, with a 'y'... Really? Why? Oh, I just—my friend knows her, but from her old school, was just wondering—oh, okay—bye—wow, she hung up on me.

I feel like...we're getting farther apart, because of the secret, but it can't be helped! People say I have to keep it a secret, but...I love my sister so much...I—Trick or Treat! Thank you—yeah, I'm supposed to be a refrigerator, with cereal, my brother was going to be a washing machine but he had to work—okay, thank you, goodbye—

God. Yes, I'm a refrigerator. I was going to be...no, I'm okay, my brothers coming right now—I was going to be, um, Princess Belle, in her yellow dress, but maybe that would've been to babyish...any—WHOA?! Did you see that? I mean—nobody—what the heck? Something just flew across the sky, but...it looked like a person riding—oh my God, oh my God—[muffled sounds and running]

William, where are you? WILLIAM!

William: [distant] Jesse?

Jesse: Oh my God...[sobbing]

William: Get in the car...if you can fit. Why are you crying, what the hell happened?

Jesse: I—I saw this—[static]—mind, I —[static]—go home.

William: Stop playing around, we're already—

Jesse: I'm not playing around, I saw someone in the freaking sky, why don't you—[silent]—...I barely got any candy...

April: Well, I did.

Jesse: Why do you always have to be mean?

April: The truth hurts, sis.

Jesse: [muffled] Yeah, especially after I punch you in the face...

Margo: Excuse you?

Jesse: I wasn't—

William: Just be quiet, Jay. You've caused enough trouble already.

Jesse: What?! I—argh!

[Recorder is paused until an hour later.]

Jesse: No one cares about me anymore... I'm glad I'm a witch, at least I'm not like them, they're just mean mugg—[silence]...I sound like Elaina, my God. But why do they have to treat me like an alien, when I'm still just Jesse? Well, I'm... witchy Jesse...but I haven't done anything for months, more than half a year! God...I'm turning this stupid thing off...flying...

[End of recording]
