AngelFyre McCubbin as Stephen Schwartz

This evening, EmmaLee LeDames sat on the steps leading up to the bell tower, nervously kicking small rocks around with the toe of her black boot as she stared out over the darkening grounds. Once she had finished her dinner, EmmaLee had passed her friend, Stephen Schwartz, a note asking him to meet her outside on the steps on the Bell Tower because she wanted to show him a few things that she had found at Hogwarts.

For the night's adventure EmmaLee had chosen to wear a black dress with long, lacy black sleeves, sheer black tights, and the aforementioned black boots. She had also braided her long white hair into a crown around her head and covered it with a glittery black scarf. She tried not to look with anticipation every single time a student exited the castle on their way out towards the campgrounds or wherever else they wanted to go. Instead, she tried to keep her eyes on the rising moon and the stars winking into focus as the sun set to her left.

The Hufflepuff had been thinking about this particular adventure ever since Stephen mentioned his love of the stars and his want to be an astronaut, but she had found something amazing in the past few weeks as well that she was particularly excited to show him. She probably should have asked the astronomy professor for permission to take Stephen up to the Astronomy Tower and stay after curfew, but her excitement at the idea at finally being able to implement her idea and her even further excitement about the artifact she found, her general forgetfulness in remembering to ask anyone anything before now, and her general lack of patience would allow her to wait no longer nor allow her the patience to track down the astronomy professor. Hopefully, the young pair could get a good view of the stars before time for curfew and make it downstairs in time oooooor they could do a good job of sneaking to bed when they were done looking.

Otherwise she would be solely responsible for getting them both in terrible trouble.

The pale girl shoved that thought in her boot as she stood up and moved to the side as a particularly large gaggle of foreign students came out of the doors and down the stairs. EmmaLee tossed from foot to foot as she waited, clasping her hands behind her back as she leaned against the large, stone railing, now actively staring at the door.

Maybe this was a silly idea. Maybe Stephen had better things to do than follow a silly little girl around the castle on near-curfew wild goose chases. On the other hand, why was she still questioning his friendship. He'd never not jumped at the chance to hang out with her, no matter how nauseating the décor of said activity.

Her brain whirled as she second- and third- and fourth-guessed herself and just as she was ready to bolt and forget the whole thing, said friend pushed his way out of the castle and appeared before her.

"Ah. Stephen! There you are!" EmmaLee said, hopping to her feet and clapping her hands together once as she took a few steps to meet him. "Please, come with me. I'm really excited to show you something." She said, grinning widely as she gently grabbed his wrist and led him back inside the way he had come. Once inside the foyer of the bell tower, she led her friend to the left and down a small alcove to a small display cabinet.

"I found this a couple of weeks ago and couldn't wait until you got here so I could show you," EmmaLee said excitedly, as the contents of the cabinet became clearer in the fading sunlight that was streaming through the castle windows.

Inside the cabinet was a decorative glass container that was wider at the bottom than it was at the top and capped with an intricately decorated silver top. Inside it was filled with what looked like, and was in fact, the shattered remains of a broom. The broom was so destroyed that it looked more like a mere pile of toothpicks and bits of straw. One could barely tell it had once been a broom. The container sat on a circular, silver stand that was just as intricately decorated as the cap. The information plaque below it read:

"This broken broom belonged to Selene Wartnaby and is rumored to be all that remains after she insisted on demonstrating her experimental 'Lunar Apparition Charm' to fellow third-years. No one knows if she succeeded."

After giving him a moment to look and read the plaque, EmmaLee turned to Stephen once again, smiling broadly.

"It seems that you are not the only one who thinks that the moon is not out of reach for wizard-kind." She said brightly.

She watched for a moment as he examined the broken broom, trying not to become entranced by the particular way his blue eyes sparkled with excitement. She blushed slightly as she waved the thought away from the front of her nose and then gingerly tugged his sleeve onwards down another hall.

"If we hurry, I was thinking that we could just make it to the top of the Astronomy Tower before curfew." EmmaLee said, leading him up the steps and through the castle towards said tower. She stopped abruptly, just now realizing that in her excitement she hadn't considered that he might have other plans and his arrival did not necessarily mean that he was agreeing to hers.

"Um, what I mean is," She started, releasing his sleeve and turning around to talk to him face to face. She twisted her hands nervously before feeling her face grow inexplicably warmer and moving them to cover the blush, looking up at him between pale fingers as she continued to speak. "if you would like to come with me,... if you don't have other plans,... the Ilvermorny astronomy tower is probably great, but the sky here is different from the sky there and I thought you might... um... want to see it? From the astronomy tower here." She finished lamely.

Ugh. This was a silly, dumb idea. Steven was probably going to think she was childish for wasting his time and rude for just assuming that he would go with her on a whim.

And why was she so nervous, anyway? Again, it wasn't like Stephen had turned down any of her silly ideas to hang out yet. Maybe he was just placating her. Like an annoying but endearing little sister you couldn't help but indulge. Wait.... why did the idea of him thinking of her as a sister bother her even more. Her brain was spiraling a little too fast. She took a deep breath and moved her hands to clasp in front of her as she waited for his answer.

Lately, it felt like the more she spent time with Steven, the more time she wanted to spend with him, the more she got to know him, the more she wanted to know about him, and the more time she spent with him and the more she got to know him, the more nervous she was about his opinion of her. The more she cared about what he thought of her clothes, her looks, her personality, her interests. It was such an odd, unfamiliar, but not unwelcome feeling. It brought an inexplicable, bubbly joy in her stomach whenever he waved at her or smiled at her or focused his attention, and those stary, blue eyes, solely on her.

EmmaLee shifted nervously from one foot to the other as she waited for Stephen's response. The flipping nervousness turned once more into bubbling excitement as he grinned widely and expressed that she should lead the way. Pale hands flew to her mouth to suppress an inexplicable giggle of joy that bubbled up in her from her stomach and through her chest. "Yes! Allons-y!" Let's go! She replied, pointing the way forward excitedly and rushing ahead of him down the stony hallway.

The pair took off quickly through the school. Ducking and dodging around ghosts, other students, and prefects making their way through the hallways as well. They laughed as they almost ran through a few ghosts who popped up a little faster than anticipated and as prefects shouted after them not to run in the hallways. They may have slowed down, but only a little.

Eventually they reached the Astronomy Tower, stifling giggles as yet another student caught them off guard by turning a corner much slower than they were. EmmaLee gingerly opened the door to the Astronomy Tower, closed it behind them, and led Stephen up the winding staircase to the top.

As they reached the landing where the telescopes awaited their rapt attention to the stars, a cool October breeze blew through the archways, making the area, brightly lit by the moon, the perfect blend of still warm fall air and the cool wind of the fading season.

"Ta-da!" EmmaLee called happily in a lilting voice that carried through the empty room like a gentle wave as she flung her arms out, spinning in a few circles towards the central orrery, presenting the ornately decorated area. It was a perfect, clear night for stargazing and EmmaLee, at least, was more excited than she had ever been in her life.

He had been beckoned with a note and his smile only grew wider as he made his way out of the castle and to where she waited. When he thrust the heavy door open, his eyes alighted upon her immediately. Before he could utter a word, EmmaLee excitedly greeted him. She took his wrist and off the two went, he listening quietly as she was nearly to bursting to lead him off to a little alcove. He blasted past a moment of panic thinking it would be a secret trysting spot she had discovered, but before he could even break a sweat over the underthunked thought, she stopped in front of a display case, her smile growing even brighter, if that was possible. Stephen moved behind her as the area was somewhat cramped and he wanted a good view of what she wanted him to see. Since he was taller, he could easily lean over her to see everything.

The first real surprise of the evening came from the discovery of what was behind the glass. He could easily feel that EmmaLee was silently vibrating, much like his cell phone did when he used to carry one all the time. His wonderment was why? Excitement over her discovery or something else altogether? Like him? She brought him to the tiny alcove to show him the remnants of some girl's broom; Selene Wartnaby's broken broom to be precise. Really? His first thought was, Ooooookaaaay -- does she think I'm interested in all brooms simply because I'm a broom racer? and then shame had to have colored his face as he read the plaque.

"Woah!" he whistled excitedly, but quietly. He stepped a little awkwardly to her side and simultaneously turned her shoulders to face him, completely awestruck. "EmmaLee, this is fantastic!" he whispered exuberantly. He was about to share his theory that it had to have failed or people would've definitely known of her success. He seriously doubted a third year witch had enough Transfiguration knowledge or the necessary grasp on the Muggle world's knowledge of the moon to have successfully pulled it off, but he brushed those thoughts aside for the moment. That wasn't the point of her little expedition, and she verified that when she told him, "It seems that you are not the only one who thinks that the moon is not out of reach for wizard-kind."

"Emm... -," and his mind-mouth connection felt broken for a few seconds as he felt lost for words. "EmmaLee, wow. Just wow! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. You have no idea what it means to me. Honest." He could tell she was pleased he was pleased, and he relaxed only a little as he felt a jumble of nerves begin to surge, and he was uncertain why.

EmmaLee then suggested a clandestine trek to the Astronomy Tower and he was all in for an adventure. Off they started once again, but it didn't stop Stephen from giving a last, longing look over his shoulder at the plaque. There were other witches and wizards with similar designs on the moon. He felt a new resurgence of purpose and he had EmmaLee to thank for it. They weren't even at the tower steps yet and now he thought he was the one going to burst. He had questions and a million thoughts and he was tacking 'To Do"s onto an ever-growing mental list of new avenues to research when he got back home.

He was so focused on his future research that he was losing sight of the adventure he was now embarking upon, so he snapped out of it easily enough. It was an adventure itself just getting there and the corridors were echoing with the syncopation of their footfalls and stifled peals of laughter. They had the pleasure of dodging ghosts and sneaking past any number of portrait people who were wide awake and possibly a threat to their mission.

At one point they heard a male and female voice coming their direction, and from the context of their conversation, something about the Prefect's bathroom, they were both prefects. Looking around for a hiding place, Stephen and EmmaLee chose a HUGE tapestry that was luckily hiding a verrrry shallow alcove. The curfew breakers were side by side with the back of a heavy, dust laden tapesty millimeters from their faces, bearing audial witness to the tender affections between the two prefects. He was glad EmmaLee could not see his face as he was certain he had to be red as a beet. Still, the absurdity of their dilemma threatened many times to dissolve him into fits of laughter. He was certain they had been discovered when he did sneeze as quietly as he could and the Prefects themselves got quiet, but they moved on and he and EmmaLee undraped themselves and ventured onward.

Success, finally, was to be theirs.

EmmaLee led the way as they ascended the spiral staircase and found themselves just outside of the Astronomy classroom. Something tickled the back of Stephen's lizard brain and yelled for him, well, for the both of them, to take flight. All of it had been just too easy. He was about to remark on that fact when EmmaLee happily and proudly lilted out a quietly sweet, "Ta Da!". He watched her, quite bemused by the Julie Andrews-like twirling and spinning as she gravitated ever closer to the central orrery. All that was missing was her singing to him that the hills were alive with the sound of music.

He continued watching her and momentarily held his breath that in such a grand, sweeping display, the orrery, and everything else, remained safely unscathed. He needn't have worried. She was far too graceful to have clumsily knocked anything over. Stephen took an eager look around and had to admit that the room was gorgeous.

His gaze landed on the bank of telescopes as the autumn breeze brushed through his hair, cooling his neck. Motioning for her to join him, he made his way over to the telescopes. It was a beautiful, cloudless night. Perfect for stargazing. "You know, the stars seem to carpet the Scottish Highlands' sky in numbers twofold what I am used to seeing back home," he said in a tone just above a whisper. They were the only two there, as far as he knew, but it felt appropriate to whisper for some reason, not out out of fear of discovery but out of reverence.

He'd been looking through the scope, training it on the moon while speaking. "Home being California and not Ilvermorny, of course," he continued, still looking and focusing his concentration on dialing everything in just so. "Ilvermorny also offers a magnificent view of the heavens, but - ..." and in that moment he looked up, completely forgetting what he was about to say as he caught the vision of loveliness that was EmmaLee standing next to him, moonbeams cascading all around her. A chorus of laughter and loud clapping could be heard drifting up to them from below in that moment. He knew he blinked a couple of times and finished his sentence quite differently than he initially intended, his voice even more hushed with her nearness, "but... but nothing nearly as beautiful as you."

As soon as he said it, the breeze that had cooled his neck was having to now contend with a face flushed with embarrassment. Stephen didn't know what to do or how EmmaLee would feel about him saying it. He might have ruined everything before they even had a chance to enjoy themselves, but a part of him was not regretting the moment at all. He stopped himself from staring at her and continued, hoping the awkwardness would pass.

"Uhhhm, if you are interested, the Sea of Tranquility is just a glance away. Look hard enough and maybe you will see Selene Wartnaby talking with the Man in the Moon," and he chuckled as he stepped aside to allow her to see what, or who, she could see.

A mixture of excitement, joy, nervousness, and embarrassment bubbled up in EmmaLee from the pit of her stomach and up through her chest and limbs as they entered the top of the Astronomy Tower. One reason for the twirling display: to let off some of the excess energy that was coursing through her at having done something that clearly made Stephen happy. She had this inexplicable desire to continue to see him smiling and to let him know that, as far as she was concerned, there was nothing out of his reach. Not being an astronaut, not being a wizard-astronaut, not the moon, not the universe.

Selene Wartnaby's broom had had the exact effect that Emmalee had hoped it would and it had been hard for herself to keep quiet about the relic on the way up to the Astronomy Tower as she clearly saw the gears turning in Stephen's own head. She had a few, honestly kind of sad, ideas about Selene's success or failure, but they could discuss that eventually.

As she finished her twirl around the glittering room, she saw Stephen move over to the telescopes and beckon her over to see as he adjusted them towards the moon. She rushed over, but made sure to continue to step lightly and not to have her booted footsteps echo throughout the tower. Admittedly, she wasn't as concerned about making a lot of noise now that they were up here, they would get caught or they wouldn't at this point, but they at least had made it to the top and got to share at least a moment of triumph at getting here. Despite the danger of getting caught in here when they were not allowed, the room, the night, the stars, that moment all felt very sacred for some reason, like the beginning of a bigger adventure, like that last moment before you jump into the pool from the highest diving board. It called for quiet and closeness, whispers even though no one else was around.

"Especially with the castle so dark, there's almost no light pollution out here." EmmaLee responded quietly as she stepped up the stairs next to Stephen and watched with interest as he knew exactly how to operate the telescope. As he turned towards her, at first talking about Ilvermorny's view and then... not talking about the beauty of the stars at all, her own face flushed red.

It seemed that she had spent so much more of this night red in the face and floundering through such a wide array of emotions than she had ever before. Stephen had complemented her looks before: at the Spring Ball, at the Gnome races. She had taken it then as him just being his polite, gentile self, but in this context it seemed like he really, truly meant it. It made the joy and nervousness and embarrassment rise up in her stomach again. "I... ah... Merci Thank you.." She managed to squeak out as she reached for the telescope, having to draw ever nearer to him to see through the eye and look at the moon.

She looked for a moment without really looking, trying to collect herself and resist the urge to take off across the room to run off the nervous energy again. She held onto the telescope just as much trying to ground herself as trying to hide her red face by turning away from him, though he surely must have seen. After a long moment of looking without really looking, she turned back to him and said, "I think that if she made it, she probably didn't know that she would need protective clothing, like... a combination space... ah! I mean, a space suit." Her hands flew to her face as for the fortieth time that night as her pale face flushed. This was a nightmare and a dream all wrapped in one.

She looked up at him through her fingers and shyly said, "Have you see the film A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès?"

A fond smile graced his face as EmmaLee mentioned A Trip to the Moon. He was well aware of it actually. "For my 10th birthday, my father gave me an HBO boxed series of something called From the Earth to the Moon. I bet I have watched that series a hundred times if I've watched it once. The last episode is somewhat whimsical and stars Tom Hanks, who was the series producer, as an assistant to Georges Méliès as he makes his famous film. The rocket landing in the moon's eye is just so iconic. It made me quite sad, actually, when I was really young and saw it the first time. That pre-dated my moon fixation, believe it or not."

He smiled as he continued to give his encyclopedic answer to her simple question, but as he spoke, he reached down and softly grasped the hand she was using to shyly peek through at him and lowered it so he could see her face.

"But I was re-introduced to the filmmaker Georges Méliès from the movie Hugo. My best muggle friend, Michael, and I went to see the movie because of the steampunk kind of theme, but it turned out to be much more memorable for the backstory. For me anyway." He stopped talking, realizing he had been talking for an awful long time. He now wanted to hear her talk.

One thing he had noticed was that EmmaLee seemed very shy, so he decided to turn his attention back to the telescope while asking her what most interested her. "So, EmmaLee. You know much more about me than I do you, and that is a shame on me kind of realization," and he did look up from the scope to shrug his shoulders and smile at her. "So tell me, I have space. You know it," and he then turned his eyes to the scope hoping she might really open up if he wasn't making such direct eye contact. "What is your equivalent passion? What occupies that soft part of your soul?" And he waited for her reply as he scanned the heavens, hoping to catch sight of a comet's tail or a meteorite shower or anything beautifully unexpected to be able to show her after she responded.

Sparks shot through her hand at Stephen's touch as he moved her hands down from her face. Again, this was both a dream and a nightmare. Why was she making such a big deal out of every little movement? Why was she so twitchy now when before she had been so comfortable in Stephen's presence?

"That's fascinating! If it's what I'm thinking of, about 'Ugo Cabaret, I've read the book, but I didn't know they made a movie out of it. It was my father's and one of the few things of his that Maman was able to find in the wreckage. A Trip to the Moon was apparently one of my father's favorite films. Maman says that he liked the practical effects the most." She said as Stephen moved to adjust the telescope again. She mentioned her father with little hint of emotion. Just stating facts. She knew by now that Stephen had a complicated relationship with his own father, and she still didn't quite know how to feel about hers. What she remembered of him was a kind man, who obviously loved her, but almost everything else she knew about him was very detailed but second-hand. Missing him wasn't quite the right word. He was like a beloved book character. A disconnected kind of fondness.

Shaken from her reverie by Stephen's next question about her passion, EmmaLee chuckled a little. "Well, my parents would say that it is my little sister, Chlo, but long before she was born, it has always been the cello. I've been playing since I was five years old. I like to sing and play piano, as well. I really like music in general. All kinds. So, I guess music. " She said, clasping her hands behind her back and rocking back and forth on her feet as she watched him search the sky as she spoke, giggling a little at her own floundering. "One of my favorite bands is a Finnish group that plays metal music with cellos. They're called Apocalyptica. My cello teacher, my Tante Alura, showed them to me."

"Maman says that my father also liked metal music." She continued, almost absent-mindedly as she looked out the arched windows of the observatory at the quite scene below. As she stared out, she spoke once more, "Victor 'Ugo once said, 'Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent." Everyone had surely gone to bed at this point and from this height, she could see the moon and stars reflected off the quite Great Lake. The only sounds from this height was the quite rustling of the window through the archways and the roof and the toned down sounds of their speech. Up here, they didn't need to talk loudly as all to be heard.

"Does your father like space?" She asked abruptly, as if coming out of another reverie and turning back to Stephen with a little more intent in her question, focused on him once again, rather than herself.

"Does my father like space?" he repeated thoughtfully to himself. He briefly looked up from the scope and and then out the magnificent windows before them. "Well, I don't think he dislikes it. I'm honestly not certain he's ever given it much thought."

This was, truthfully, a very sore subject for Stephen. Most of his life he had been nearly obsessed with the idea of space and space travel. He had had big dreams and had had big plans, all of which had been fostered and tended to with care by his best friend's father and not his own. That in and of itself was not the hurtful part, or the most hurtful part, anyway. The most hurtful part had been placing him in a school of magic, against his own wishes, thereby obliterating all hope of attending the Air Force Academy. Last time he checked, he was pretty damned certain Ilvermorny's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was not on the approved list of accredited educational institutions for admission, a salient fact his father didn't give one flying fig about.

Standing there in such a state, his laser focused gaze could have almost burned holes in the magnificent windows. He was so caught up in his disappointment, for about the 100 millionth time, that he completely forgot EmmaLee was even there beside him. The predictability of the emotions he always felt on this subject had already begun to come to life and their intensity was ratcheting up quickly. Already he could feel the rage licking at his psyche and it was just an ugly, internal spiral from there.

Without even realizing it, he let out a deep sigh and leaned lightly against the telescope, raising his arm at the same time to drape it casually along the length of the optical tube. That was a mistake. The whole apparatus, given its size, was much lighter than Stephen would have imagined it should be. Before he knew it, both he and the scope started their inevitable descent to the floor thanks to a little thing known as gravity. He was surprised, to be sure, but he did not panic. He managed to right himself easily enough, and hours upon hours of broom practice and wand practice had him grabbing for his wand as a due matter of course. Without really having to think about it, he cast "Arresto Momentum" on the telescope.

Fully expecting to hear the shattering of the glass lenses and the clanging of the metal tubing, moments - maybe two to three - passed with only silence to be heard. Well, that and his racing heartbeats pounding in his ears. A mere two seconds later, maybe less, and that telescope would have been a goner. He knew he had cast successfully, he just hadn't been sure he had been timely enough.

"Holy crap on a cracker," he croaked and then finally remembered EmmaLee was not only there, but had just borne witness to his utter clumsiness. "That was a close call. Too close. And ermmmm, my sincerest apologies for the uhhhmmm, for the uhhh, for the cracker remark." He turned away from her so that he could retrieve the telescope and put it back where it had originally been. Or at least a close proximity to where it had been. He probably would have been blushing under normal circumstances, but he was honestly just so relieved not to have broken it that little else was registering with him in those moments.

When he finally had it righted and situated, he wasn't feeling any more calm. His brain had been racing and he had assumed it was because of the near catastrophe, but then it dawned him. He was being pushed to think back to just before EmmaLee had asked about his father. He had asked her to tell him more of about her passion, and he had been listening while not spooking her with too much direct eye contact. As she had been telling him about her love of playing the cello, and metal music, he had found the something beautiful in the sky he had hoped to be able to show her.

"I swear I'm not generally clumsy. I got lost in thinking about my father, and the scope was so much lighter than I thought it would be, and well, you know the rest." An awkwardly charming grin made its appearance, crinkling the corners of his eyes before he continued. "I'm sorry if I scared you. If it had broken, you likely would have had detention until graduation and I likely would have been banned from Hogwarts forever," and he shook his head sadly back and forth at such a prospect. "Lucky for us, that was not the case. Here, come take a look at this, and he quickly looked back into the scope and found the prize. He had not expected to be able to see the Andromeda galaxy from Scotland, fearing it would be too cloudy, but there it was.

"I don't know what you know about what you are currently looking at, but that is the Andromeda galaxy. Like the Milky Way, it is also a spiral galaxy, and is actually the closest large galaxy to our own. If memory serves, Andromeda and the Milky Way are destined to collide in about 4.5 to 5 billion years from now creating an even larger spiral galaxy," and he whistled at the thought. "Man would I love to see that. Imagine looking up into the night sky and seeing nothing but those gorgeous spiral arms," he said wistfully. He silenced himself and gave her a bit of time to look at it and then moved closer to her once again.

"If you'll permit me, I think I may be able to magnify it so that you can see some incredible details," and he stepped forward as she moved back a bit. He made a few quick adjustments and lifted his head to blink a couple of times before putting it back down. "Whoa. This is spectacular!" and he moved back to watch her as she once again positioned herself over the eyepiece. "The spirals are not as prominent due to the positioning right now, but trust me, they are there."

He was happy to finally get some time to observe her more closely and marveled at her beautiful white hair in the moonlight. It was nice to have a little time to look at her and not be shy or coy about doing so. "I'm not musical at all, but one interesting thing I read, well, interesting to me anyway, was that some composers, when dealing with the subject of astronomical bodies, would score their pieces to look something like a spiral galaxy. I'm not quite certain what that means, exactly, but it sounded intriguing. I realize I'm probably telling the cellist amongst us nothing new here, but it's about the only contribution I have to offer up, at this moment in time, with regard to your passion."

Oy. Just shut up, Schwartz.

Oh... Apparently that had been the wrong question. EmmaLee frowned slightly at Stephen's comment and how his demeanor changed from calm excitement to angry and irritated. She didn't know a whole lot about Stephen's relationship with his father except that his father was very busy and Stephen didn't talk about him much. She guessed that that should have been telling all on it's own that it was a delicate topic.

Mr. Schwartz had seemed rather nice and caring when she had met him in August and her own stepfather her enjoyed meeting the man as well. She felt bad and oblivious for not noticing a strain in their relationship and asking a question that would upset Stephen. She definitely understood weird family relationships.

"Ah..." She said quietly, wringing the front hem of her dress in her pale hands nervously. "that's a shame." She watched his internal struggle for a moment before his face seemed to fall even further and she started to reach out a, hopefully, comforting hand. As she did though, he let out a deep sigh (prompting her to snatch her hand back nervously) and leaned against the telescope woefully.

EmmaLee's hands flew to her mouth, gasping in shock as boy and appliance started to go down, then out towards the telescope in an effort to save it from the floor. Thankfully, Stephen was as quick with his wand as he was on a broom. EmmaLee breathed a sigh of relief as the telescope stopped in mid air and was righted by her ever capable friend. She giggled at his "crap on a cracker" turn of phrase, and a little at his fumbling, and nodded.

"Much too close." She agreed. For a moment, she wrestled with whether or not she should try and help him with the apparatus or just stay out of his way. With the latter winning out, she clasped her hands patiently behind her back and waited until he found his object again. Rather fortunately, the near catastrophe had seemed to mostly wave the tense moment from the air and Stephen was smiling again.

EmmaLee could hear him talking as he fixed the telescope back in place, but she found herself a bit distracted by how amusing and... cute she found it to watch him be embarrassed. She was pondering on a sparky, warm feeling that drew up the corners of her own mouth when he grinned at her, when she finally tuned in as he was talking about punishment for breaking the scope and something he wanted her to see.

"It is a good thing to 'ave magic sometimes." She said, walking over an peering through the lens with extra care. "I'm rather prone to forget how easily magic solves many problems. I think we will get in much more trouble for being up 'ere after 'ours than breaking the telescope." She continued with a small giggle as her eyes focused on the galaxy. "That is beautiful." EmmaLee breathed, wonder-filled as she gazed at it. She straightened up to look at him, grinning.

"I know a bit that we've learned in Astronomy class, and my Maman taught me 'ow to spot many constellations and read the stars for directions and sailing, but I know nothing about this galaxy." She explained. She found herself adoring the way Stephen talked about space. It filled her with a strange want to know everything he knows, but also to find something he doesn't know, just so she can see the excitement on his face. EmmaLee blushed at the thought and was thankful for an excuse to use the telescope to hide her burning face.

She gazed for a moment, marveling at the beauty of the universe. She had already loved the night sky, but this was more even more splendid and she could easily picture that galaxies merging the way he described and how even much more beautiful that would be. "The universe really is beautiful." She said as she righted herself once more to look at him as he spoke.

"Music and science go back a long way." She said with a small chuckle and a wide smile. "Music is a lot about feeling. It is the way humans express themselves when words are not enough. A lot of composers express their wonder at the universe through their music." She said, smiling wistfully and swaying a little as if dancing to a song only she could hear. "There is one composer who makes his sheet music look like animals. It is very cute." She finished, giggling a little.

EmmaLee clasped her hands behind her back and searched the observatory for something else to bring up. She was a little apprehensive to ask him another question about himself, lest it be another awkward one. It was also getting very late. EmmaLee felt as if they had only been here for a few minutes, but the moon's high position overhead said otherwise. Finally she settled on, "What kind of music do you like? Or is it not much of your thing?" She asked with a smile and wrinkling her freckled nose in a kind of playful, mock disgust and placing her hand delicately on the railing next to the telescope. They probably should start heading out soon or they would surely come to some kind of trouble, but EmmaLee found herself loath to leave Stephen's company. She found herself wishing she could pause time as easily as one could stop a falling telescope.

"Yes, beautiful," he parroted in a whisper while watching her look through the telescope. He didn't realize it, but he was staring at her as it was completely safe to do so in those moments. Everything about her was soft and sweet and radiating a moonlit glow that he would have sworn was emanating from within her and was not simply an artifact of the evening's light surrounding her. He was pulled from the too-short moments by the sound of her voice and forced himself to pay attention when she began to speak.

"Do you sail, EmmaLee?" he asked with an ignited enthusiasm. "I have only been in canoes in Golden Gate Park, which, of course, require no navigation by the stars," and he chuckled, "but I once got to go with my best friend to the San Juan Islands, off of the Washington state mainland, for a couple of whale watching excursions. It was fantastic. Well, mostly it was, right up to the point that those with no sea legs started losing their breakfasts over the side of the boat," and he laughed outright, "my best friend included. I never knew a human being could look so pale green and still be alive," and he laughed even more at the memory. Then catching himself, way too late, he cleared his throat a couple of times and nodded at her before moving on. "Apologies."

"It really was an incredible experience though. It definitely sparked an interest in learning to sail, I will say that. Can you imagine, when people thought the word was actually flat, the amount of courage it took to head off to the horizon, into literally uncharted waters, with nothing but those,"
and he pointed up to the stars carpeting the sky with more than a modicum of wonder and yearning in his voice, "to guide you?" Stephen took in a deep breath and let out an equally long sigh. A few moments after that, he looked back down, meeting her curious eyes once again.

"The moon is high which means it is late. And we both have classes tomorrow before the start of the Ball." EmmaLee cocked her head just slightly to the side as she often did when something he said confused her or intrigued her. His bet was on confusion this go around. "No, we magical visitors are not excused from our studies just because we are here at Hogwarts. Our studies take place in our cabins while you Hogwartians are sitting in your classrooms. No rest for the exhausted," he snickered as he reached a hand out towards her.

He escorted her down the Astronomy tower steps, answering her question about what kind of music he liked. "Hmmmm. I'm afraid I don't have very refined tastes when it comes to music. When I'm home, I generally listen to STYX, Journey, Chicago, Kansas, maybe some KISS. It's not that I don't like other kinds of music, I just don't think about it too much. It's what my father listens to so I guess I'm just used to it maybe," and he shrugged. "Though I have recently become aware, just this very evening in fact, of a genre of music and a band that I shall be thinking about checking out as soon as I am able," and he looked over to her and winked.

As he safely deposited her outside of her Common Room on the first floor, he bent down and whispered slowly, mainly in an effort to extend his time with her, "I will meet you tomorrow outside of the Banquet area. Don't stand me up, now. I fear I may not ever recover if you should," and as he drew back, his smile was lighting up his eyes.

Thank you for a wonderful night, EmmaLee. I will see you tomorrow evening."

Stephen then turned and hurriedly headed off, only half thinking about the possibility of getting caught by a prefect. When he got to the corner, he turned back to see EmmaLee still standing outside of her Common Room, watching him. He smiled even wider, waved, and then was gone.

"Ah a little bit." EmmaLee said looking up at the stars for a moment. "We definitely sailed more when I was younger. We don't sail a lot at night any more, but my mother taught me how to get to the ocean from where we lived and sail all over the place." She explained, turning back to look at him. The number one thing her mother had taught her, the obvious thing that most people knew, was to find Polaris first, every time she looked at the night sky. It was a habit that she still carried, to look up and find it any time she might be able to see it. Navigating the stars wasn't just good for sailing, but also for finding your way on land as well. It had never occurred to her before that maybe that wasn't something everyone was taught.

EmmaLee giggled at Stephen's story and apology. "I can't say that I ever lost my own breakfast off of a boat and you don't need to apologize. I enjoy your stories about your friends." She commented with a serene smile as he swooped his hand across the sky. Her own eyes caught the moon again just before Stephen commented on its height. Dang. She sighed and nodded. They really shouldn't drag this out any longer, lest someone finally take their rounds up here and catch them. They were pushing their luck to the limit as is.

Stephen's mention of classes made her raise an eyebrow though and made her think: how did the international students do classes? Surely they didn't get four extra weeks to just play around at Hogwarts each year. Now that she thought about it, she kind of assumed they received a stack of homework to do while they were gone. As she pondered this for a moment, Stephen seemed to read a different question on her face, as his explanation came before she could verbally ask about it and EmmaLee puffed her cheeks out in a playful pout.

"I knew that." She said in a playfully grumpy tone, stuffing her hands shyly in the pockets of her dress. "I was just wondering 'ow." She chuckled a little, took his offered hand and hesitantly let him lead her down the steps, walking slowly on the assumed pretense that they needed to be quiet as they snuck back down to their respective beds, but really just wanting the whole event to last as long as possible. It really was a shame that they had classes tomorrow. It would be nice if this night could last forever, but it was not so. At least there was tomorrow, where they would enjoy another Hogwarts ball together, no matter what chaos was in store this time.

EmmaLee happily listened to Stephen chatter about what music he did listen to as they walked back down to the Entrance Hall and she gently steered him towards her common room, taking a lot less care to get caught than they probably should have, but walking slowly and quietly all the same. Honestly, if his gentlemanly ways would have allowed it, EmmaLee would have walked with Stephen to his cabin instead since it was farther, but she knew enough about him at this point to be sure that he would not let her go back across the grounds alone this late at night. So she could prolong their adventure by "letting" him walk her to her common room instead.

Once they arrived at the dreaded end, she turned to Stephen to say goodnight and a trill of excitement that she couldn't explain vibrated in her chest and stomach as he leaned down and whispered his own goodbye in her ear. Always the one with the right words to leave her tongue tied.

As he stood upright, she scooped her long hair over that ear and blushed, having to again reign in that strange urge to run away from him bubbling up from her toes. "Thank you for coming with me. I will be there tomorrow, wide awake and early." She said with a shy smile and a chuckle, peeking up at him through her snowy bangs.

She hung back at the common room door and watched as he quickly, but quietly made his way towards the castle exit. She couldn't help but beam as he turned around, matched her smile and waved, and disappeared out the door and into the night. She held up a pale hand at his retreating back, then turned around and knocked the password.

Once through the hole, she hopped out and did a couple of quick laps in a circle in front of it with a wild, but stifled giggle, finally able to release that weird burst of energy that kept bubbling up in Stephen's presence.
