Officially Unofficial: Ying vs. Maverick
Afternoon, before dinner Saturday, November 4th, 2023The Duelling Club was an electrifying venue, its atmosphere charged with flying spells, shouting opponents, and bickering crowds full of friends and fans come to rally their champions. It wasn't unusual for a team to take over the place, covetously practicing out their routine away from prying eyes. When one team tired itself out, another might muscle in, flooding the room with aficionados. Fortunately for Ying and Maverick, the duellists weren't permitted to overtake the place all day. It was "open swim" hour: a cluster of Ravenclaw duellists was departing for dinner, freeing the floor for non-members to take a turn.
Pericles was among the last to leave, trailing the group with faraway eyes and a satisfied smile. The fifth-year was easily approached, and when Ying flagged him down, he drifted off course with a receptive tilt of his head. The bird wasn't just unbothered: when she asked if he was willing to moderate a second-year duel, his ghostly features lit up with a smile. "I'd be happy to," Peri assured with a trace of old-school pure-blood formality. "I haven't been a referee in ages, but I've been in my fair share of duels. Lead the way."
Handshakes and introductions were in order. He identified as Pericles Dralt, fifth-year Ravenclaw, explaining that he had been "duelling officially since they reopened the club in my second year... but unofficially, since my first year." His sleepy smile became a sly smirk as he winked, adding "That's not to say that I would ever condone unsanctioned matches outside of the Club. It's a good thing you two were responsible, asking for a moderator and all." Pericles glazed over the rules, reciting a few outlawed spells and reminding them that physical attacks were prohibited. "I have a handful of healing potions with me, though you'll likely need to check in with the nurse when all's said and done. Any questions? No? It's customary for opponents to bow, except some consider it old-fashioned. I'll settle for a handshake." He watched with a hint of that grin beneath his placid demeanor, relishing the familiar spark of pre-duel excitement.
"Wands at the ready... and... begin."

Officially Unofficial: Ying vs. Maverick

Duelling had never really been an interest of Maverick's; out of the three official sport clubs Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry offered, broom racing and Quidditch sounded more interesting for him. He ended up joining the Gryffindor Broom Racing team - but that's a story for another day, and the only relevance it had to do with his plan for today was that the first broom racing of 2023/2024 academic year was over, so he currently did not have very strict practice schedule to follow.
Fang Hui-Ying, a fellow broom racer and one of the most fun people at Hogwarts, had suggested the two tried their hands on duelling just for fun. It was very nice of her, especially that Maverick loved being invited for an activity that involved just one or few close friends; people may find him oddly not a big-group type of person. But for some reason, he was still uncomfortable with the idea of Fang addressing him as Maverick; currently, he was still Castle to her, just like how most people called him (per his request).
She found a senior to referee for them, and Maverick decided that he liked this teenager, at least as a schoolmate. He looked educated, friendly, and civilised; unlike some elder students who thought they were better than him just because they were older, or some pupils his age who longed for attention that they did stupid and annoying things just so people would notice that they were alive. Yeah, right! "The name's Castle," he introduced himself to the fifth year.
At Dralt's instruction, Maverick's first reaction was to refuse because they were just here for fun; but on second thought, it suddenly popped up in his mind that an athlete should separate the person from the rival, and so he decided to do so. "Right," he said seriously to his fellow second year. "For today, for a couple of minutes or hours, you will be my rival. Not my fellow broom racer, my fellow Gryffindor, or my friend. So I will not go easy on you, Fang." He nodded and took his position.

The pouring rain did not wanted to stop that day, it hit the window glass like stones, making a loud sound that embraced the room. Ying loved that sound, it always brought her some comfort, but the worse part was that it also made her feel sleepy, and she really needed to stay focused on the task at her hands. Usually it is not difficult to concentrate in her studies, but in that day...she needed something else to keep her awake during that class. So that's when she decided to send a note to her table partner. "Want to duel one of this days?" she wrote and quietly passed the note to his side of the table. "Under the condition that it'll take place after the broom racing so we won't get distracted in preparing for the official competition." Was Maverick's response, to which Ying rolled her eyes before replying, "Deal!"
So here they were, finally at the Duelling Club, searching for some fun, at least in her case! She had once participated in another unofficial duel, but since then, broom racing has been her focus and she had found herself loving that sport. But she missed this excitement of casting spells at each other. Besides, it was a good practice even for racing. She took it also as a training session, she felt rusty after summer break, even after their first competition, she still felt that she needed to practice more.
Entering the spacious room and almost entirely empty of students at that hour, Ying stretched her arms in front of her while walking through it in search of someone that could be their referee. That's when she spotted him, a pale boy with white hair and silver eyes. Apart from all his interesting appearance, she most importantly noticed that he was older then her and Castle and so, that was saying he was perfect for the job. "Hey there! I'm Ying!" She greeted him and introduced herself soon after, "Do you mind being a referee to our duel?" She asked, and was happy when he responded so positively to her sudden approach, shaking his hand back when he introduced himself as Pericles Dralt, a fifth year Ravenclaw duellist. "Nice to meet you Mr. Dralt!" She said cordially with a friendly smile.
After Pericles make all the preparations and give them words of advise, it was finally time for them to start. Taking her mayhaw wand out of its holster, Ying held it and felt it adjust to her hand.
"Right" She heard Maverick's serious tone of voice and immediately looked at him, "For today, for a couple of minutes or hours, you will be my rival. Not my fellow broom racer, my fellow Gryffindor, or my friend. So I will not go easy on you, Fang." He made her know. A smirk kept to her face while she got to her position and replied to him, "It shall be done Castle! Get ready, I can't promise I'm not going to make it hurt...but I will definitely enjoy this!"

────────────────────────As a duellist, Pericles enjoyed any opportunity to share the sport with others, though the pair's politeness made him all the more happy to help. He waved away Ying's formality with a sheepish smile, saying "Oh, 'Mister Dralt' is my father. You can call me 'Peri', if you like." Her soon-to-be opponent introduced himself, and the Ravenclaw met him with a warm handshake. Castle drew the line with his impassioned declaration: they were friends, but neither of the Gryffindor racers was about to let that cheapen their practice. Ying fired back with enthusiasm in equal measure. The Ravenclaw's sleepy smile became an encouraging grin. The duo showed a genuine respect for each other, knowing that they could trust their opponent to do their best, while not harboring any resentment against each other in the end. As their referee took his place along the piste, Peri's daydreaming persona was replaced by a sudden intensity. He rested his palm on the hilt of his wand, narrowed eyes alight in excitement.
"Wands at the ready... and... begin."
They were off with a bang as Ying opted for a classic Flipendo. She struck true, emulating the sensation of being socked straight on by someone much larger. A few paintings on the wall had taken notice of their match and chose to chime in. "Always 'Flipendo' all day with these duellists," a portrait of a witch was whining, "cast at least a hundred times in an hour!" Pericles held up a finger, hushing her before focusing on the duel again. Flipendo was a favorite among duellists for good reason: it was both simple to cast and extremely effective at dealing damage. A critical strike could even floor one's target. While her hit wasn't enough to knock Castle off of his feet, it would likely leave a bruise.
Castle flung a blazing Incendio bolt across the stage, which Ying nearly dodged, though it still managed to nick her. The flame didn't catch but was sure to sting. Another portrait joined the commentary, that of a mustached wizard with one side of his facial hair waxed into an impressive curl, the other half being singed off and still smoking. He folded his arms at the impaired hit, huffing "Hmph! Beginner's luck." While the portrait of a poor sport might not give credit where it was due, one thing was certain: she was lucky it didn't stick. Incendio was a strategic cast. If it caught its target aflame, they had to choose between physically snuffing it, hoping they succeeded in magically extinguishing it, or enduring the pain- all difficult choices. Peri rummaged through his things to make sure he had a jar of Burn Healing Paste ready.

There were sounds all around him. Perhaps it was Dralt talking. Perhaps it was Fang. Or maybe there were spectators in the room, spectators whom he had failed to notice. But it would not matter, since Maverick's concentration was focused on one thing and only one thing, and it was the duel he was in.
The second year was oddly calm in this situation. He did not have the upper hand in this very exact moment, but somehow he remained calm, there was not even the slightest trace of anger on his face or inside him. The part-Veela was certainly brave, and today he did not seem to care if he would win or not.
He had predicted that Fang would attack him with Flipendo, and he himself had been meaning to use exactly the same spell. But something had made him change his mind. It may or may not be a wrong decision, even though he realised that most would definitely say it had been a mistake, but once again he could not care less. It was so un-Maverick like. Even more strange, he kind of hoped he would get knocked off his feet.
What was wrong with him? Was he hit on the head without him realising it?

As soon as Ying heard the magical word, "Begin", her wand almost moved by its own accord from how many times she had already practiced that spell. A bright spark of orange light spurted from the tip of her mayhaw wand as soon as the word "Flipendo" left her lips. She was not a person to contain herself while in a competition. Sometimes she regrets later, even if she would never admit that, but while the match was on, she would never refrain or loose a chance to win.
Some voices coming from the wall called her attention. Was the first time she noticed that there were some portraits. "What's wrong with Fli..." She started to ask the lady's portrait feeling a little irritated with her observation. But the time it took Maverick to recover from her spell was much shorter than she expected and out of the corner of her eye she saw a tendril of flame fly towards her. Ying barely had time to evade the other lion's spell, feeling it caressing her skin, leaving a small sting in her left hand. "That was close!" She stated smiling brightly at Castle, "An awesome choice Castle, I almost couldn't escape your spell!" She happily said, she was feeling excited, not because her spell worked, but because she always loved duelling and she missed it, more than what she realized until that time, "Show me your best!" She challenged him with a smirk and a glint of mischief in her dark brown eyes.

────────────────────────The second set of spells was cast, and this time, both struck true. Ying elected to cast Bullarum Immortalem, producing a volley of glistening gold bubbles from the end of her wand. They piled around Maverick, solid and unpoppable, nearly up to his waist. Unless he tried to send them away with Flipendo, he was going to have a difficult time dodging. Forcing an opponent to wade through them was a tactical hindrance. Up on a wall, one of the portraits was watching through an ornate spyglass. His commentary was about as useless as that of his fellow's, but at least it was kind: "Oh! How pretty."
On the opposite side of the stage, Maverick had opted for Spongify. The spell's impact was entirely dependent on where one managed to hit: the arms would make it tricky to aim, the legs would have made dodging difficult, and the wand would have been floppy, rendering it awkward to cast with. Regardless of where it hit, it was not a pleasant spell. Maverick managed to strike Ying dead center. Magic rippled through her torso, temporarily making her midsection feel boneless, nigh gelatinous, bending her body for immensely uncomfortable damage. Pericles grimaced lightly, breathing a low "Ooh" with an empathetic palm to his chest. Spongify was a smart cast, it just felt gross to be on its receiving end. At least the effect was short-lived.

Right in the bull's eye! Maverick was rather giddy and seemed to be on high upon seeing how his spell hit Fang. The fellow Gryffindor, who had said something earlier (but he had not heard it, perhaps as a combination of his concentration and the rather noisy environment itself, he seemed to have heard so many voices that her voice was drowned in all those), was hit on the chest.
Her spell, though, also hit. Soon there were bubbles, magical bubbles the colour of gold (he wished they were transparent and reflected the colours of the rainbow like the usual soap bubbles instead), and they piled up around him. He was rather annoyed to be perfectly honest, and did try to give them
a kick, but they were obstinate.
Funnily, they also reminded him of a comedic comic book he had read when he was younger that he could not help but smile, perhaps losing his concentration on the duelling a little bit. In the story set in the 1970s or 1980s, the main character, a Muggle, was annoyed with a school bully who took a classmate's cassette. As a revenge, he sent the bully some magic bubbles that, when being popped out by the bully, let out annoying words about him. Sure enough he was angry and shouting, and the revenge was successful because the bully's mum got angry at him in return -
Wait, what? Magic bubbles? Could these ones around me be...?

That was the strangest feeling ever! As if she had lost the ability to support the weight of her head and arms, bowing in a strange way. She couldn't help but feel relief that the spell was short-lived, because besides being funny, it was also quite painful. Her chest felt sore after the impact of the spell and she knew it would still be like that for a while. But she was used to it, you can't always evade the flying spells. Unfortunately! Besides Maverick was really good with his spells and she could see he was becoming even better after their broom racing training. "That one was really good Castle!" She complimented him when recovered from those jelly effects.
Obviously she would have to reply to his spell accordingly right? So possibly the best way to keep him from casting such accurate spells was to somehow preventing him from moving. At least that was the plan! "Bullarum Immortalem" She uttered. This was a spell that took some of her time to master, those words could really roll on your tongue! But she happily saw that it had worked when she saw her teammate, now fierce adversity, to get caught in the middle of golden bright bubbles. "That looks nice on you!" She joked smiling at him and getting ready for his response.

────────────────────────Watching two students of the same year duel was rewarding. They appeared to be equally matched in skill, so getting creative with their tactics would be a necessity if one was to tip the scales. Ying's tactic seemed to play out in her favor so far: as she aimed another Flipendo at Maverick, he did his best to dodge, and very well would have if not for the massive golden bubbles blocking his way. As he tried to move out of the spell's path, he would find the orbs slowed him down and took up too much space. The hit wasn't dead on, but it still clipped enough to do some damage.
As he tried to fire a Flipendo of his own, Mav would miss Ying by a hair's breadth. The impact hurtled across the room to be harmlessly absorbed by the enchanted walls. "Aim for the legs, lad!" one of the duellist portraits hollered down. With their practice match being the only action now, it seemed the Gryffindors had garnered a small painted audience. "The legs!" Pericles glanced up with an arched brow, vaguely amused by their contributions, but correcting all the same: "Don't distract my duellists, please." The portrait- a former champion of some import- crossed his arms indignantly but said nothing more.
