I always thought in European cultures people only uses given names to someone close?
As a girl from France, E would assume to call a classmate their given name. So she does. Although, she would never assume to call an adult by their first name in any situation unless given permission to do so.

I don't personally know many Europeans so honestly I just call them whatever they introduce themselves as. If I'm not sure, I go by surnames until the person tells me they prefer given.
