A rolling reversal would work well in that situation. (Charlie Blackwood in Top Gun)

One lazy Saturday morning. It was honestly perhaps one of the best times ever, when no one expected him to do something and thus he could do whatever he cared: no class, no homework, no test, no social event, and no obligated training. Basically, nothing at all. Pity there was no TV or internet at Hogwarts, otherwise Maverick would be tuning in for the latest motorcycle racing news. Perhaps he should be flying around on his Firebolt instead...

His mind ran free as his body soared above the Quidditch training pitch. As a first year, Maverick was not sure if he was going to like Quidditch better than broom racing or vice versa, so he tried both. At the end, though, he decided on broom racing, and would be joining his house team starting that term. Truth be told, he may not be entirely sure he had made the 'right' decision, but broom racing sounded more similar to Muggles' motor racing than Quidditch would ever be, so he guessed it could not be such a 'wrong decision'.

The part-Veela ran one hand across his forehead. How hot it was to be under the sun today! He had not expected this earlier, but maybe it was time to search for some shade before taking off one more time. He dived down, forest green eyes scanning the condition around.

It was going to be a pretty boring weekend for Charlie. She had one quidditch practice the next day but there was nothing going on today. Charlie had planned to sleep in but her cat Zara had other plans. Her cat usually slept with her or around her dorm, but at about six in the morning Zara had decided that Charlie really needed to wake up. Charlie didn’t know why her cat had done this to her, but since there was no use in going back to bed, she got up. The sun was rising by the time she made it out of her dorm. She began the descend down the millions of Hogwarts stairs, slightly wising her house’s dormitories were closer to the ground. She took her time eating breakfast with the rest of her school, packaging up two fluffy biscuits in some parchment and sticking them in her pocket. She sighed and decided to go outside since it wasn’t storming.

It was actually kind of warm when she made it outside, so she took off the large hoddie she had been wearing and tied it in a knot around her waist. She decided that she would get her broom out from the broom stead and get in some practice with her brand new broom. Well it wasn’t brand new, but it was new to her so it was still a new broom in really good condition. Her father had gotten her a Silver Arrow.

Charlie had audibly gasped when she saw the broom. And that gasp immediately turned into a frown when she had seen who it was from. It was just her father trying to win her back after leaving when she was five. Something she could never forgive.

Charlie grabbed her Silver Arrow and marched over to the training pitch. It was so hot so she plopped down in the shade of a larger tree on off to the side of the pitch. She untied the sweatshirt from her waist and dropped it on the ground. She then plopped down on the sweatshirt and rested the broom on her lap. Charlie hadn’t even practiced, but she was already tired.

Apparently, there was another person underneath that seemingly-comfortable tree. Maverick was very sure there had been no one earlier when he came, so this student must have slipped in when he was flying above.

As with almost anyone he noticed, the Gryffindor then conducted a quick observation (a subjective one, though, instead of objective) on the subject. Pale skin, light brown hair with no fringe; pity, he thought her face would look better with it. She looked somewhat familiar, but he could not put his finger on where he had seen her. Then it was probably in a class, so she must have been a fellow second year; however, he could not help but think that she looked older than he was.

The closer he was to the person, the more noticeable her expression was. According to his opinion, she did not look too happy, but why he could not tell. (Of course. If he had been able to, then he had been a Legilimens all along.)

And because he was in a good mood, he called at her cheerily, "Hullo there! Nice day, isn't it? Care to join me for a race? I see you've got a nice Silver Arrow there."

Charlie stopped when she saw the boy. She froze. He was… handsome. She had never thought that about a person before. He had short brown hair that was much light her than hers, and was also straighter than hers. He was kind of small, but not too small that he looked like a six year old. He was wearing jeans and a white shirt with an olive-ish jacket. He had muggle sunglasses, that were the ones that they wore in the American plane films. Charlie would later find out that he was her type.

Charlie opened her mouth to say something, but before anything could even come out, he spoke. He offered up a race, and Charlie knew she had to say something. "Uhh yeah. I'm not a broom racer, but a quidditch player and I'm a Keeper. This is also a new broom and I am still working out how to use it, so... yeah." She said, awkwardly, cringing at herself. She wished she was more like her friend, who always knew what to say and when to say it.

Charlie got up and asked him a question. "Is there anything I should... errr know about broom racing before this?" She asked him, stuttering only when the two made eye contact. Charlie didn't know anything else about broom racing besides that you flew your broom along a course and tried to beat some other racers and people on your team. In the moment, she wished that she knew more about broom racing, but knew nothing could be done except ask.

Maverick stopped his broom, landing right in front of the other pupil, two feet on the ground and the Firebolt now securely held in his right hand. "Oh, don't worry about that broom racing," he laughed, not at the student but as a sign of friendliness thanks to his good mood. "I meant we could just speed on our brooms, see who's faster. Or even without competition, isn't it always fun to speed on a broom?"

His forest green eyes then rested at the Silver Arrow. For the part-Veela, it was nothing compared to his Firebolt. The colour was pretty, though, metallic silver definitely went with motorcycles and it looked good on brooms as well, the same with the Bluebottle type of broom. It also looked shiny, perhaps in some ways because it was new, though he was very sure his was just as good as he polished it regularly. But for the second year, the Silver Arrow did not have the sleekness of his Firebolt. Unlike the latter, which was marketed for its speed and manoeuvrability, the former was advertised as a handmade broom, making it a work of art and not to serve a practical purpose (for Maverick).

He looked back at its owner. "What do you say? For getting used to the broom, we can do a sighting lap and then a warm up. Or even going round and round like a practice session," he chirped merrily, forgetting to explain the terms in case the other student had no idea what he meant.

Charlie didn’t really know if she wanted to actually broom race, but didn’t show it. She purposely gave off her usual I don’t care vibe. Maverick seemed like a cool dude, so she sorta wanted to give it a chance.“Okay.” she said, and almost instantly added “I guess so.”

Her eyes landed on the beautiful firebolt he was holding. Between the firebolt and silver arrow they were holding hundreds of galleons, in just two flying brooms. The firebolt was definitely a more popular choice, but the silver arrow was more popular in Quidditch amongst second and third years. Charlie hadn’t even picked out the broom as it randomly showed up on her bed on day. She would later find out that it was her sneaky father’s doing, who after saw her work hard on new skills over the summer on her mostly junky Nimbus 1500, that she desperately needed a new broom. He had made that happen with no help whatsoever, which had surprised her, because since her father left when she was five, Charlie assumed he had absolutely no heart. The silver arrow was not the fancier broom but it got the job done for Charlie, so she didn’t seem to mind it.

What Maverick said next was extremely confusing to the young dhapmir, and she hesitated before she spoke. “Um, we could just fly around?” She said, but half questioned. Charlie didn’t really know what any if that meant, so she went with she safest option, none.

"Ah, like a practice session, then," he decided, nodding his head. "I assume you don't really want to do it fast?" He was not really expecting an answer, but he kept on looking into her eyes, as if inviting her to catch up with him as soon as possible.

And then, if she had not done so in one full minute, he would soar back to the sky - slowly at first as he warmed up the broom, faster on his second lap, and eventually each lap time was almost always faster than the previous one.

But even this was not totally satisfying for him, and so Maverick tried to pull up various tricks. First, he braked fully all such a sudden in the middle of speeding, attempting to create the equivalent of a racing motorbike's wheelie. After that, he broom drifted, just like what he had successfully done before a Flying class last academic year (Professor Lin might not have liked it, but he was not around at the very moment, so Maverick could not care less).

This broom drift became almost like a carbon copy of what his first year self had performed, so the Gryffindor was not really pleased. "I may be able to fly inverted," he thought, imagining himself hanging upside-down on a speeding broom.

If the girl he had invited to join earlier did not say anything, Maverick would almost certainly forget about her presence.

Charlie didn't really know what she wanted. But what she did know is that she definitally wanted to fly, so to Maverick she said, "I mean, fast is fine. Let's just do it." She followed his lead as she watched him take off. She mounted her broom and followed, being careful to stay at least five feet away from him at all times. Flying in laps, she broke off and did a circle around the hoops of one end of the practice pitch.

The practice Quidditch pitch was obviously not as nice as the one they played all of their games at, but it worked well for practices and training. Charlie didn't have a quaffle, or anyone to throw it at her for that matter, so she flew up higher and began following what Maverick did, except slower of course. Charlie let him stay ahead as she flew faster and faster. She noticed that he really liked to fly fast, so she understood why he was a broom racer and not a Quidditch player. In Quidditch, you couldn't really fly to the broom's full speed, unless you wanted to fly right off of the pitch.

When Maverick began to do tricks Charlie stopped flying in laps and stopped her broom roughly above the center of the pitch watching him. Is he trying to impress me? She wondered to herself. When he did some sort of smooth turn action, she knew he was good. "Woah." She said, realizing it was quite loud. If the boy heard her she would most likely blush with embarassment.

"Woah."

Maverick grinned as his ears caught the girl's admiring expression, at the very moment remembering that he was not along in the pitch. Whereas he had not meant to impress her, he always enjoyed knowing that people looked up to him. It boosted his confidence, and he liked having a lot of admirers to give him the feeling that he was the best in something.

The second year turned his face at the fellow student. Grinning happily, he shouted as they were rather far from each other, "You like it? Wanna try it for yourself?"

If the girl declined to do it herself for whatever reason, or hesitated, the part-Veela would move his broom closer to her and stop at a spot where the two could converse comfortably. "I'll be glad to guide. Or maybe it'll be easier, and more fun, if you feel it first," he offered. Motioning at the tail of his trusted Firebolt, Maverick spoke confidently again, "This beauty can carry up to two people, well three maybe if at least one is a toddler. Hop in, and I'll guide her so you can feel how a wheelie feels. Or a stoppie, in case the tail instead of the head gets lifted."

The boy, Maverick, had a massive smile. When he caught her staring glancing over at him, he had smiled at her. She felt her face explode in the brightest red blush. Her pale skin, not only from being a dhapmir, but also being a large chunk Irish, turned red extremely easily. She looked down at her hands which were holding on to her broom and attempted to hide a smile, and her tomato red face.

Maverick continued to smile, and when Charlie finally snuck a glance at him, he spoke. Charlie wasn't sure. She was a keeper and had really no need to be flashy at all while flying. But it couldn't hurt, could it? "I mean, sure? Why not?" She said, kind of curious how he learned how to do all of those stunts. Had someone taught him or had he just fooled around a bunch on his broom? Would he teach her every step of the way or just show? Charlie never liked when people just showed how to do something, so she really hoped Maverick would slow down some of the steps and help her.

Apparently, she had hesitated, or failed to hide that she was unsure about trying out more things than just basic flying, so he moved closer to her and spoke in a warm, calming voice. He had talked to her about hopping on his broom and really feeling how he'd did the tricks, but Charlie was slightly overwhelmed with all of the words he had spoken so she just opted for a simple "thanks," before stopping to think again. "Yeah, I think feeling out the tricks would help," she said and waited for him to make the next move.
