The First Start Line of Many
The first race of the year was set for the 29th of the month. Why was this relevant, you may ask? Was Alyssea not a duellist anymore? No, she still was. She was waiting for her first match, anyway. So why was the date for the first race hanging over her like a dead weight?october 16th 2023; open to the hufflepuff broom racers (please say hi, i beg)
Alyssea had somehow become the newest racing co-captain for Hufflepuff.
While she wouldn't be racing with the other badgers until further notice, she would be there for all their training sessions and races. She knew the team were a force to be reckoned with, except against Gryffindor. The Gryffindor broom racers were a different kind of scary.
Alyssea had a broom she bought just before the year started again. Nothing flashy but it got the job done. Even though she wouldn't be racing with them, she considered herself a hands-down person, someone who had to be in it to know it. If she wanted to get right to the nitty-gritty of strategies, she would willingly fly (and hopefully not fall to her doom) and learn with the team. Flying wasn't her favourite class, though, so getting over the fear of being on a broom might take a bit.
For now, she sat at the edge of the field, broom sitting across her lap, and a list in hand from the previous captain. It felt like the first Flying lesson of the year with everything that was on it. Essentially, it was a list of broom maintenance tasks to be done before her first practice with the team. The only difference was that this list seemed more comprehensive and specific...
Her own broom was a Nimbus 1001. Again, nothing flashy but still a good racing broom. But these racers had some expensive brooms she was quite scared to touch. Like, c'mon, a Silver Arrow? A Starsweeper? It might be easier said and done to brush out the brooms, varnish the shafts, and chop away any splinters. Alyssea stood there and stared back and forth between the list and the brooms. With a deep sigh, she began with what she thought would be the easiest task: cleaning the brushes.

can i just say that i was scared to ping all of you
if you would like context as to where this came from, originally it was an idea from dori where dori and alyssea join the team at the same time and george gave me the motivator for alyssea to pour over an intense list he made. essentially, i would like for alyssea to ic meet you all

George had finally hung up his metaphorical badge and passed the torch on to another proud badger to lead the broom racing team to victory in the coming school year. That didn't mean he was letting go of the reins all the way, though. This new captain was a duelist - meaning he would need to stay on, at least for now, to provide his expertise and ability in the broom race. His pride would not allow him to abandon the badgers so easily.
The new girl was an impressive specimen. Duelists were tactically minded people, even if they could not understand the true stresses of flying and casting simultaneously until going through a race. She would at least grasp the theory. He had already taken care of all his broom maintenance tasks - his broom was the most expensive thing he owned (besides some items of clothing provided by his ex-boyfriend) and he treated it with the care it deserved. A Nimbus 2001... with a compass on it. And a few stickers, as a Muggle touch.
"Hello, Alyssea," George said as he walked up. He was projecting pure professional. Neatly groomed, trimmed bristles on his broom, brushed out and varnished and polished and calibrated and curse-checked, etc. He gave a smile to the new captain... she was a bit young. Maybe she's a prodigy.
He glanced between her and her broom, which looked dreadfully unmaintained. Such a lack of care did not bode well. He cast his judgemental gaze onto her. "Are you just getting started? I can help."

Dori was headed down to the field with their broom strapped across their back with a holder that Dori had sewn when they were home. It made transporting it much easier since it was an awkward thing to have to carry across school grounds. The Silver Arrow had gotten Dori through many years of their schooling, and was something that they kept quite good care of despite using it less and less over the years. Brooms like this were expensive and getting a replacement was not exactly in the cards.⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛
By invitation of the captain that had replaced George they were supposedly all meeting up to do broom maintenance together. Dori had purposefully put theirs off so they could actively participate in the team bonding. After all, Alyssea and them were the newest members of the team. From a distance they were able to spot George already talking to who they assumed to be Alyssea, and they couldn't help but sigh in relief not to be the first one there.
As they approached, they attempted to on purpose bump into George. George it's up to you whether or not you would like to accept the merciless attack."Hey! I'm Dorion, but you can call me Dori. I use they/them pronouns. It's nice to like- actually meet you." Of course most of the Hufflepuffs knew each other in passing, but most of the people that Dori was friends with were in their year. "I made sure not to maintenance my broom so I could actually participate." They took a spot in front of Alyssea, taking the broom off their back and setting it in front of them.

And here he was. Alyssea never formally met or talked to the previous captain before today, so she was nervous, to say the least.october 16th 2023; interacting with @George Henry and @Dorion Anderson
Alyssea offered George a smile and bowed her head slightly. "Hello. Nice to meet you. And yes, I was just getting started." She looked down at the broom that hadn't been brushed thoroughly due to his impeccable timing.
Alyssea glanced at George's broom. It was practically glistening with the amount of care put on it. But what caught her eye the most was not its potentially expensive value, but the colourful decorations on it. Stickers! How did they manage to stay on? Was it an Epoximise spell? Adhesive never lasted too long unless you put it on paper.
Before she could accept his help (and also ask him about his stickers), George got bumped by a newcomer. She smiled at them. "Nice to meet you, Dori. I'm Alyssea." She paused a bit before adding, "I use she/her pronouns."
She chuckled a bit with Dorion's comment about not maintaining their broom. "You guys might have to teach me a little; I don't do any broom sports and Flying's not my best class." She showed them her newly purchased Nimbus 1001. It only ever saw the light of day on Flying days and stayed in the broom closets collecting dust.

Hanging out with his fellow 'puffs.
Simon came in right at the end of Alyssea's statement about not doing broom sports and that flying wasn't her best class. "Good thing you've got us around, then," he flashed her a smile. "No, only kidding, we're happy to have you on board. Welcome," and he did a sort of wave like motion with one hand, his broom in the other. "Simon Kincaid."
He joined his fellow broom racers and lowered his broom, beginning his 'pre-flight check' if it were. That's what he liked to think of it as anyway and in many cases it was. When pertaining to the muggle aspect of aviation, a preflight checklist was a list of tasks that a pilot performed prior to takeoff for the purpose of improving flight safety and minimizing, if not eliminating, major contributing factors to an aircraft's potential accident. It was unfortunately often overlooked in broom racing but was truly one of the most important tasks. It ensured not only sometimes success, but safety as well. He was glad that this new broom racing captain was holding it at importance.
"It's going to be another great year. Win or lose," Simon smiled to his team mates. Oh, the boy was very much a Hufflepuff.
It was true though, as broom racing was his favorite things about Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Whether they had an amazing record like the year before or lost every race, he was pretty sure that it would be a memorable time!
Be kind to one another. (*iNPC is Miles Thatcher)
