The Train Ride to a Magical World
Mia Shelby was frankly scared. More nervous then scared. She took a deep breath and climbed up into the train. But Mia couldn't stop looking at her family. She halted as her hair moving rapidly from the wind blinded her from looking at her father.
"It's all going to be okay!" She heard her father yell. Or maybe she just made that up. Not sure how to reply to that, she glanced outside at the platform for the last time, and then slowly ascended up again.
She found herself in a long corridor. She looked around, and found a lot of empty compartments. That was good for her, since it was going to get awkward if all compartments had a student, or, students in it and she had to talk with them. It was getting obvious that every talk she had with a peer gets weirder and weirder. She now missed her muggle friend Olivia, who was the only exception from that formula.
Pushing her thoughts away, she opened an empty compartment and sat into a seat. 'Now, what am I supposed to do? Noticing more kids coming into the train, she felt like she had to do something, not just staring at the window, which made her hum a melody from her favorite movie, Beauty and the Beast.

The Train Ride to a Magical World
Tremaine was completely ready to go to Hogwarts. He had been waiting for this time for his entire life. Here he would make friends, learn magic and, most important, find himself immersed in a completely new world. He lugged his trunk up onto the train, so excited that he nearly missed his mom and grandparents waving goodbye to him.
"Be sure to write us!" his mother called, beaming.
"Unless you're in Slytherin!" his grandmother corrected, her wrinkled face split in a wide grin.
Tremaine's smile flickered for a moment. Was she serious? But she just laughed, and Grandpa Charles stepped forward.
"Don't worry, kiddo. We'll all love you no matter which house you're in."
Tremaine leaned forward to hug his grandfather and pulled his trunk into the train. There were people everywhere, chatting and arguing and laughing loudly. Tremaine moved as fast as he could without full-out running, looking for an empty compartment. Ah, here was one with only one girl in it! She seemed to be humming, the tune vaguely familiar. It seemed to be, if he recalled correctly, from a muggle movie of some sort.
Tremaine unabashedly pulled the compartment door open. "Hey, do you mind if I sit with you?" he asked, setting down his trunk for a moment? How was it even this heavy? It hardly had anything in it. Tremaine massaged his shoulder, waiting for the girl to respond. She seemed a little nervous, as was to be expected on he first day of school, and Tremaine gave her an encouraging smile.

The Train Ride to a Magical World
Mia looked at the boy who had just opened the door of the lonely compartment. Curly brown hair, somehow reminding her of chocolate, and a smile. He looked okay. Okay enough to let him in the compartment. Well, she knew she couldn't keep the compartment by herself forever.
She gave a slight nod, allowing the boy to come in. She stopped humming and glanced at the boy again. His trunk looked heavy. "I wonder what's in it', she thought.
She eyes headed toward the window that still showed the platform. A woman and two people were waving in her compartment, her father nowhere to be seen. It seemed to be pretty sure that they were his family. Her eyes drifted but found nobody who seemed to be the father of this boy. She wondered about the possible stories that could happen, but then decided to just ask the boy after he was settled in the compartment.
The word "pure blood" popped up inside her head. He might be a pure blood wizard. She knew that pure blood families hate muggles, muggle born wizards, and, maybe, half-blooded witches like her. She didn't want to make a rivalry with a student this early. Hoping the boy wasn't a pure-blood, or even if he was, not a muggle hating pure blood, she waited for the boy to come inside.

Tremaine lugged his trunk into the compartment, grinning at the girl, and collapsed into the chair opposite her. After a moment, he leaned forward and closed the door, then pushed his trunk under his chair. "Hello," he greeted, wiping a mop of ginger hair out of his face.
Looking out the window, Tremaine noticed that his family was waving to him. He waved back, beaming out the window at them. His mother, her hair red and bushy, her her arm draped around Tremaine's pale grandmother, both laughing and waving. Grandfather Charles was a little bit away from them, simply smiling, no waving needed to give Tremaine a splendid send-off. The train whistle blew, and the train began to move, slowly at first, then gathering speed. Tremaine waved to his family until he couldn't see them any more, and then turned back to face Mia.
"Sorry, I didn't introduce myself. I'm Jarrow, Tremaine Jarrow." He always introduced himself this way, on the off chance that the other person had heard of his family. The Jarrows, though not very well-known nowadays, had been influential in the Ministry of Magic. A few pure-blood students still knew their name. It was hard to tell whether this girl was a wizard or muggle born, but Tremaine's immediately assumption was "wizard-born until proven muggle-born".

The Train Ride to a Magical World
"My name is Mia Shelby. A name too short it can't really have a nickname." Her nervous feelings changed into pleasure and delight as the train started moving, giving a little jerk. Tremaine's family was gone from the window, showing a blurr of green and blue sky.The perfect day to ride a train!
She wondered if it was a good idea to talk about their blood staus. Her brain quickly decided that she could just ask him if he hated muggle-born, or half-blood witches. If he did, she would simply leave the topic behind, and if he didn't care about that, thankfully, they could talk about their past lives.
But again, it felt weird to ask her peer about his opinion on muggles. It felt like asking a child about their political opinions. So the only option was to ask him if he was a pure blood. She took a eep breath. She did really want to know more about him.
"So, uh, are you a pure blood? The people waving were your family, right? Which means that you're from a wizard family...?"
She regretted saying everything a few seconds later. She could've just talked about his trunk or something! She ritted her teeth, but she couldn't do anything now.

Tremaine chuckled as Mia introduced herself and made a little comment on her name. He leaned back in his seat, watching the billowing clouds rolling past. Tugging his wand out of his pocket in a most haphazard manner, Tremaine starting twirling it round and round with his fingers, sending a few sparks flying.
Looking at Mia, Tremaine's mind immediately went to her house. Which one would she in? Or, for now, which one did she hope to be in? Tremaine himself planned on being in Gryffindor, and apparently his grandmother was counting on it. Not that he minded the pressure, but it would make being in another house - hypothetically, of course, because that wouldn't happen - an even more difficult experience.
He turned his gaze to Mia as she took a deep breath. His first, completely bizarre thought was that she might be asthmatic. But then he realized that she was about to speak. Wow, she needed to gear herself up just to speak? Poor girl.
"So, uh, are you a pure blood? The people waving were your family, right? Which means that you're from a wizard family...?" She seemed to be a little uncomfortable about this subject, which was understandable. Tremaine gave himself a moment to try and discern whether she was a pure blood or not. Well, best to play it safe.
"Yeah, I am," he said, then quickly regretted it. Okay, so he wasn't actually a pure-blood, per se. His great grandparents had both been muggles, and his grandfather was muggle-born. But he was definitely from a wizard family, so he could just pretend he had been saying yes to that. Anyways, this girl wasn't liable to go find his family tree and trace it just to find out - hopefully.
"How about you?" he asked, trying to divert her attention away from his statement. "I didn't see anyone out there for you." Oops. On second thought, that might be a tender subject. "So are you, uh, a pure blood?"

The Train Ride to a Magical World
Surprisingly, she had a grin on her face when the boy laughed. When Tre-mai-ne laughed. A hard and long name, which was begging for a nickname. Anyways, it was a likeable laugh, but still, it was surprising that she did. Mia simply shook her head at the boy's question. So he was a pure blood. It wasn't something shocking, she was half expecting that answer. Still, she doubted if it was a good idea to talk about her family. Again, she wasn't a girl who was familiar with talking, especially to boys. Maybe she should really keep Olivia's advice-just keep talking about everything inside her head.
"Half-blood." She simply stated. "My father is a wizard, my mother is a muggle. So is my sister. My father was a Ravenclaw." She stopped for a moment, then talked again. "Frankly, I don't fit into Ravenclaw. I think. I'm not a person like my father. Not a strict person who keeps on reading books about economy. Plus, the name Ravenclaw itself is...Weird. Well, if the house symbol is an eagle, they should have at least made the House name Eagleclaw? Ravens are pretty smart animals too, I don't really get why they did it as an eagle."Words rushed out of her mouth, an unexpected situation for her. Still, it actually felt good. She now understood why girls loved to chat and spread rumors. "I'm more interested in Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. And potions. My father said that I must be a Hufflepuff, even though I'm not sure." She glanced at his wand, noticing the wand wood. "It's Holly, isn't it? Your wand."

Tremaine noticed Mia's grin and felt proud of himself. He loved it when he made people smile, even if they were laughing at him rather than with him. But this sense of pride deflated slightly when she shook her head. Yikes, she didn't seem to be a fan of pure-bloods. Tremaine shifted uncomfortably, wondering if he should correct himself and mention that he was wizard-born, not pure blood. But he decided against it. Correcting himself now would just make him seem dishonest.
Mia started by telling Tremaine that she was a half-blood. Tremaine nodded, slightly intrigued. Wow, imagine having the best of both worlds. How had her parents met? Who had been the magical parent? How had it been revealed that they were a witch - or wizard?
His second question was immediately answered by Mia, who kept on talking. Rambling on and on about her father and Ravenclaw, she seemed to be getting less shy now. Tremaine listened intently, nodding at the appropriate places. He couldn't help laughing whenever she pondered the wisdom of Ravenclaw's symbol being an eagle. He himself had wondered about that, but decided it wasn't worth getting worked up about.
He had just been thinking over what she had said, trying to determine how to respond to everything, when Mia hit him with a totally random question. Rather confused and taken aback, he glanced down at his wand. "Um, yeah, holly wood. Snallygaster heartstring. Which is cooler than it sounds." His mouth quirked up at the corner. "How'd you know what it was? I guess it comes from being interested in Herbology."

The Train Ride to a Magical World
"Maybe. A rare wand wood, finding owners who are engaged in adventurous quests." Her eyes looked at Tre-maine once again. Was he a boy who was eager for new stories? New relationships and new adventures? Sure, he looked eager for Hogwarts when he came inside the compartment. Maybe he was Gryffindor. Probably.
It did seem like she had confused Maine about the random wand topic. "I tried a holly wood wand once. Can't remember the core. It hated me very much, burning papers with an invisible fire." The boy's wand was rather pretty. Actually, she called all wands pretty. The small symbols , plants and ivy that was carved in the magical piece of wood always made her delighted. Which was maybe why she was so interested in Herbology.
Thinking about her favorite subject, she wondered what Maine was interested in. She had babbled a lot about the Houses, especially Ravenclaw. It was decided that it was the boy's turn to talk.
"So, what are you interested in, Maine?" It took a few second for her to notice that his name was actually Tremaine, not Maine. Again, the boy seemed to have a confused look, making Mia fidget with her hands, awkwardly. "I, I meant Tremaine, sorry.."

The Train Ride to a Magical World
Tremaine couldn't but be a little proud of his wand wood. Of course, he had known that it was for those that seeked out adventures in life, but it sounded so much better when not uttered from the mouth of that rather creepy old wand maker. And his wand, he hoped, would be a perfect match. He hadn't tried anything with it yet, of course. He knew he wasn't allowed to. But he could imagine himself now, fighting his way past a mother dragon to fetch a little egg he could raise on his own. Well, perhaps way, way in the future.
Mia told him about her little holly wood wand incident and he laughed. Funny, nothing really terrible had happened with his. As he recalled, the holly wood he had now had been his third wand. The first two were rather mundane - one had turned its empty box into a rubber chicken, and the other had done nothing at all. He wasn't sure whether that was good or bad - perhaps it signified that he had good control over his powers, or maybe it meant that he wasn't really that powerful at all.
Turning the conversation to him, Mia asked him what he was interested in. Actually, she had specfically asked what he was interested in, Maine. Maine? Tremaine had a moment of perplexed silence, unsure how to respond to that. But Mia quickly corrected herself, looking embarrassed. Tremaine couldn't help laughing. "Erm, no, that's alright, Miss Shelby, you can call me Maine. Nobody's ever used that before, I was just a little confused."
He smiled and continued on in response to her question, "As for my interests... Well, I plan on collecting chocolate frog cards once I get to Hogwarts. I used to have a few, but I left them back at home. Not going to eat the chocolate frogs, though." He made a face. "And I love magical creatures. You know - dragons and hippogriffs and the like. Think I'd like to own one some day. Maybe a Antipodean Opaleye. They're real beauts, I've heard."
Tremaine glanced at Mia sideways. He had always thought it would be neat to own a dragon, but some people might think he was a little off his rocker. He wasn't sure about this girl, but she seemed generally more open than some of the kids he had met, so he was going to just risk it and tell her about his dragon dreams.
